Tests were performed to determine the accuracy of an Australian F89 light machine gun having barrels fitted with or without flash suppressors. The results of these experiments are presented in this report. It was observed that the addition of a flash suppressor from a MAG 58 machine gun can reduce the size of mean radius dispersion by as much as 41% over an original Minimi flash suppressor and 35% over none being fitted. It appears that when using standard taper-ended Minimi barrels 19% of this improvement can be attributed directly to the mass of the MAG 58 flash suppressor but that this mass has no apparent effect on accuracy when using heavier F89 barrels. It was concluded that gas- dynamic effects due to flash suppressor design may have a significant role in weapon accuracy and merit further study.

Scifi spoof of unknown origin, Captain Flash in the 25th Century follows the adventures of the heroic but somewhat pompous Captain Flash and his loyal sidekick Spark as they battle the evil Emperor Menk across seven thrilling episodes. The story begins when Captain Flash receives a distress signal that leads him and Spark to the sinister planet Menkcon, where they crash-land after Flash is weakened by his one vulnerability - a cheese and onion sandwich planted by the cunning Emperor. After surviving various perils including being eaten by a giant winged lizard beast, Flash discovers that Spark has been captured and his memory erased by the villain's mind control device, turning the sidekick against his former hero. The second of two reports is presented whose goal is to evolve methodology for use in evaluating the visual evoked response (VER). The first presented techniques for obtaining and evaluating the complete evoked response; in this study, the method purposely results in VER's which are incomplete, by presenting the visual stimuli at rates that are too rapid to be responded to singly. Rapid flash rates are shown to produce VER's which are reliable and easy to interpret and assess statistically. Furthermore, they appear to be composed of factors in addition to elements from the complete evoked response. Together the methods evolved in the two papers provide efficient techniques for using the VER as a tool in studying Naval problems.

The Deep Convective Clouds and Chemistry (DC3) field campaign in 2012 provided a plethora of aircraft and ground-based observations (e.g., trace gases, lightning and radar) to study deep convective storms, their convective transport of trace gases, and associated lightning occurrence and production of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Based on the measurements taken of the 29-30 May 2012 Oklahoma thunderstorm, an analysis against a Weather Research and Forecasting Chemistry (WRF-Chem) model simulation of the same event at 3-km horizontal resolution was performed. One of the main objectives was to include various flash rate parameterization schemes (FRPSs) in the model and identify which scheme(s) best captured the flash rates observed by the National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN) and Oklahoma Lightning Mapping Array (LMA). The comparison indicates how well the schemes predicted the timing, location, and number of lightning flashes. The FRPSs implemented in the model were based on the simulated thunderstorms physical features, such as maximum vertical velocity, cloud top height, and updraft volume. Adjustment factors were added to each FRPS to best capture the observed flash trend and a sensitivity study was performed to compare the range in model-simulated lightning-generated nitrogen oxides (LNOx) generated by each FRPS over the storms lifetime. Based on the best FRPS, model-simulated LNOx was compared against aircraft measured NOx. The trace gas analysis, along with the increased detail in the model specification of the vertical distribution of lightning flashes as suggested by the LMA data, provide guidance in determining the scenario of NO production per intracloud and cloud-to-ground flash that best matches the NOx mixing ratios observed by the aircraft.

We investigate the hydrodynamics of the core helium flash near its peak. Past research concerned with the dynamics of this event is inconclusive. However, the most recent multidimensional hydrodynamic studies suggest a quiescent behavior and seem to rule out an explosive scenario. Previous work indicated, that depending on initial conditions, employed turbulence models, grid resolution, and dimensionality of the simulation, the core helium flash leads either to the disruption of a low-mass star or to a quiescent quasi-hydrostatic evolution. We try to clarify this issue by simulating the evolution with advanced numerical methods and detailed microphysics. Assuming spherical or axial symmetry, we simulate the evolution of the helium core of a $1.25 M_{\odot}$ star with a metallicity Z=0.02 during the core helium flash at its peak with a grid-based hydrodynamics code. We find that the core helium flash neither rips the star apart, nor that it significantly alters its structure, as convection plays a crucial role in keeping the star in hydrostatic equilibrium. In addition, our simulations show the presence of overshooting, which implies new predictions concerning mixing of chemical species in red giants.

In recent research, liquid fuel droplets were found to hinder the detonation process in a pulse detonation engine (PDE). In the current work, multi-phase effects are eliminated with a flash vaporization system that vaporizes the liquid fuels prior to mixing with air. Hydrocarbon and air mixtures have been transitioned from deflagration to detonations previously, but exhibited long ignition and deflagration to detonation transition (DDT) times. Here, two liquid hydrocarbon fuels, with different octane numbers (ON), are detonated with air in a PDE to determine the effect of octane number on the ignition time and the DDT time. The premixed, combustible mixture fills the PDE tubes via an automotive valve and cam system described in detail elsewhere.3 N-heptane (ON-0) and isooctane (ON-100) are evaluated individually to determine the effects of automotive octane number on pulse detonation engine combustion performance. The ON has been considered previously4 as an acceptable criterion in determining the detonability for PDEs, and it is derived based on the tendency to knock or detonate relative to isooctane in an automotive engine application.

The relative importance of two primary processes in the photolyis of water: (1) H2O + h (nu) yields H + OH, and (2) H2O + h (nu) yields H2 + OD-1 were determined in a direct manner by time resolved detection (via resonance fluorescence) of H and O formed in processes 1 and 2 respectively. The initially formed OD-1 was deactivated to ground state OP-3 prior to detection via resonance fluorescence. The relative quantum yields for processes 1 and 2 are 0.89 and 0.11 for the wavelength interval 105 to 145nm and = to or greater than 0.99, and = to or less than 0.01 for the wavelength interval 145 to 185nm. Rate constants at 300 K for the reactions OD-1 + H2, + Ar, and + He are presented.

The Li-rich turn-off star in the globular cluster NGC 6397 could represent the smoking gun for some very rare episode of Li enrichment in globular clusters. We aim to understand the nature of the Li enrichment by performing a spectroscopic analysis of the star, in particular of its beryllium (Be) abundance, and by investigating its binary nature. We observe the near UV region where the Beii resonance doublet and the NH bands are located. We could not detect the Beii lines and derive an upper limit of log (Be/H) < -12.2, that is consistent with the Be observed in other stars of the cluster. We could detect a weak G-band, which implies a mild carbon enhancement [C/Fe]$+0.4\pm0.2$. We could not detect the UV NH band, and we derive an upper limit [N/Fe]$ < 0.0$. For oxygen we could notdetect any of the near UV OH lines, which implies that oxygen cannot be strongly enhanced in this star. This is consistent with the detection of the Oi triplet at 777nm, which is consistent with [O/Fe]~0.5. Combining the UVES and Mike data, we could not detect any variation in the radial velocity greater than 0.95 kms$^{-1}$ over 8 years. The chemical composition of the star strongly resembles that of `first generation' NGC6397 stars, with the huge Li as the only deviating abundance. Not detecting Be rules out two possible explanations of the Li overabundance: capture of a substellar body and spallation caused by a nearby type II SNe. Discrepancies are also found with respect to other accretion scenarios,except for contamination by the ejecta of a star that has undergone the RGB Li-flash.

In the neutron-rich internal shocks model for Gamma-ray Burts (GRBs), the Lorentz factors (LFs) of ions shells are variable, so are the LFs of accompanying neutron shells. For slow neutron shells with a typical LF tens, the typical beta-decay radius reads R_{\beta,s} several 10^{14} cm, which is much larger than the typical internal shocks radius 10^{13} cm, so their impact on the internal shocks may be unimportant. However, as GRBs last long enough (T_{90}>20(1+z) s), one earlier but slower ejected neutron shell will be swept successively by later ejected ion shells in the range 10^{13}-10^{15} cm, where slow neutrons have decayed significantly. We show in this work that ion shells interacting with the beta-decay products of slow neutron shells can power a ultraviolet (UV) flash bright to 12th magnitude during the prompt gamma-ray emission phase or slightly delayed, which can be detected by the upcoming Satellite SWIFT in the near future.
