Eugene O'Neill's drama Anna Christie was first produced on Broadway in 1921 and received the Pulitzer Prize in 1922. It focuses on three main characters: Chris Christopherson, a Swedish captain of a coal barge and longtime seaman, his daughter Anna, who has grown up separated from her father on a Minnesota farm, and Mat Burke, an Irish stoker who works on steamships. At the beginning of the play Chris and Anna are reunited after fifteen years apart. Anna comes to live on her father's coal barge, but hides the secret of her past from him. When she meets Mat after an accident in the fog, they almost immediately fall in love - but Anna finds that forging a new future will not be easy. Beyond the Horizon is a 1920 play written by American playwright Eugene O'Neill. It was O'Neill's first full-length work, and the winner of the 1920 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play focuses on the portrait of a family, and particularly two brothers Andrew and Robert. In the first act of the play, Robert is about to go off to sea with their uncle Dick, a sea captain while Andrew looks forward to marrying his sweetheart Ruth and working on the family farm as he starts a family. Dedicatory Letter. Dear Doris, I could not tell you all the things which have ever happened in the world, but I have tried to tell you shortly about all the most important things from the very beginning, even before people had come into the World at all, right down to our own wonderful times. I have chosen the greatest men and women to tell you about, and in reading their stories I hope you will understand better something of what the times were like in which they lived, and what the other people too were like who were not so great and the kind of lives they led. The pictures in the book are not like those in most of the books you see and read, because most of them are not pictures made by people who are alive now, but they are copies of pictures, and statues, and buildings made by the very people you are reading about in the book. When you are reading about the Egyptians you get a picture of a pyramid made by the Egyptians themselves 6000 years ago. When you read about the Greeks you find pictures of statues of great Greek statesmen made by great Greek artists long ago, and so on. In the Middle Ages you are given pictures from the beautiful stained glass windows and the wonderful manuscripts which the people of the Middle Ages knew so well how to make. Sometimes the drawing may seem a little curious to you, but it is much more interesting for you to have these pictures than imaginative pictures made by people who are living now. Just as all the pictures are true so all the stories are true too. Indeed, there were many tales I could have told you which are often told to children as history, but are not true at all. Winner of the 1928 Pulitzer Prize, Strange Interlude is a Freudian melodrama that seeks to explore the vast, unfathomable murk of the human unconscious. To accomplish this goal, playwright Eugene O’Neill employed an experimental use of soliloquies, where characters revealed their unvarnished inner thoughts directly to the audience, revealing the psychic turmoil lurking beneath the placid masks of polite society. Following its first exhibitions, Strange Interlude also became a lightning rod of controversy and censorship due to its frank portrayals of topics such as abortion, infidelity, sexual desire, and mental illness. Set in the aftermath of World War I, the play follows the lives of several characters over the span of two decades. Our central character, Nina Leeds, is haunted by the recent death of her fiancé during the war. Her despair and despondency gradually take an inward, self-destructive turn, as she indulges in a number of sordid affairs before tumbling into a loveless marriage. Thus begins a chain of events that will haunt the lives of all who fall within Nina’s orbit. - Summary by ChuckW
