There is momentum building as human discovery goes even further into interstellar space. Recently astronomers from the Kepler mission discovered Earth-size planets in the habitable zone. Meanwhile on and near Earth NASA pushes the boundaries of space exploration with the design of the Space Launch System (SLS), testing of the Orion capsule and fourteen years of continued human exploration and operation aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Exploration Class missions to Mars will require precautions against potential contamination by any native microorganisms that may be incidentally pathogenic to humans. While the results of NASA's Viking biology experiments of 1976 have been generally interpreted as inconclusive for surface organisms, the possibility of native surface life has never been ruled out and more recent studies suggest that the case for biological interpretation of the Viking Labeled Release data may now be stronger than it was when the experiments were originally conducted. It is possible that, prior to the first human landing on Mars, robotic craft and sample return missions will provide enough data to know with certainty whether or not future human landing sites harbor extant life forms. However, if native life is confirmed, it will be problematic to determine whether any of its species may present a medical risk to astronauts. Therefore, it will become necessary to assess empirically the risk that the planet contains pathogens based on terrestrial examples of pathogenicity and to take a reasonably cautious approach to bio-hazard protection. A survey of terrestrial pathogens was conducted with special emphasis on those pathogens whose evolution has not depended on the presence of animal hosts. The history of the development and implementation of Apollo anticontamination protocol and recent recommendations of the NRC Space Studies Board regarding Mars were reviewed. Organisms can emerge in nature in the absence of indigenous animal hosts and both infectious and non-infectious human pathogens are theoretically possible on Mars. The prospect of Martian surface life, together with the existence of a diversity of routes by which pathogenicity has emerged on Earth, suggests that the possibility of human pathogens on Mars, while low, is not zero. Since the discovery and study of Martian life can have long-term benefits for humanity, the risk that Martian life might include pathogens should not be an obstacle to human exploration. As a precaution, however, it is recommended that EVA suits be decontaminated when astronauts enter surface habitats when returning from field activity and that biosafety protocol approximating laboratory BSL 2 be developed for astronauts working in laboratories on the Martian surface. Quarantine of astronauts and Martian materials arriving on Earth should also be part of a human Mars mission and this and the surface biosafety program should be integral to human expeditions from the earliest stages of the mission planning.

Microgravity and radiation of space create harsh physiological strains on astronauts with significant damaging effects on cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems among others. It is necessary to utilize medical technologies that can effectively monitor chronic and acute alterations to astronauts’ health statuses on spacecrafts. Future missions to distant planetary bodies will result in longer exposure to damaging environmental factors and limit crew access to healthcare resources and maintenance devices; thus, even greater logistical and quality considerations must be made. Remarkable advancements in ultrasound technology have created new powerful portable imaging devices and a potential chip-based alternative to piezoelectric crystals that are used in nearly all ultrasound devices. This literature review will investigate new commercial and prototypal ultrasound medical devices on their potential effectiveness in austere environments such as space. The accuracy, versatility, and practicality of each device will be compared to each other as well as the current technological gold standards of health monitoring used in traditional healthcare settings. Assessment of new ultrasound technology in this literature review will provide guidance to future missions by space agencies regarding the most optimal medical devices to protect astronauts and, therefore, enable further exploration of distant planets and solar systems.

This report has discussed the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) and the U.S. Antarctic Program (USAP) in the context of assessing the potential rationale and strategy for conducting a cooperative NASA/NSF (National Science Foundation) effort. Specifically, such an effort would address shared research and data on living and conducting scientific research in isolated, confined, hostile, and remote environments. A review of the respective goals and requirements of NASA and the NSF indicates that numerous opportunities exist to mutually benefit from sharing relevant technologies, data, and systems. Two major conclusions can be drawn: (1) The technologies, experience, and capabilities existing and developing in the aerospace community would enhance scientific research capabilities and the efficiency and effectiveness of operations in Antarctica. The transfer and application of critical technologies (e.g., power, waste management, life support) and collaboration on crew research needs (e.g., human behavior and medical support needs) would streamline the USAP operations and provide the scientific community with advancements in facilities and tools for Antarctic research. (2) Antarctica is the most appropriate earth analog for the environments of the the Moon and Mars. Using Antarctica in this way would contribute substantially to near- and long-term needs and plans for the SEI. Antarctica is one of the few ground-based analogs that would permit comprehensive and integrated studies of three areas deemed critical to productive and safe operations on the Moon and Mars: human health and productivity; innovative scientific research techniques; and reliable, efficient technologies and facilities.

The plan for NASA's new exploration initiative has the following strategic themes: (1) incremental, logical evolutionary development; (2) economic viability; and (3) excellence in management. The cost estimation process is involved with all of these themes and they are completely dependent upon the engineering cost estimator for success. The purpose is to articulate the issues associated with beginning this major new government initiative, to show how NASA intends to resolve them, and finally to demonstrate the vital importance of a leadership role by the cost estimation community.

As humanity sets its sights on more ambitious space missions, the evolution of propulsion technologies emerges as a critical enabler. This paper examines the trajectory of propulsion systems from chemical rockets to groundbreaking electric, nuclear, and fusion-powered concepts, assessing their capacity to overcome the physical and economic constraints of traditional spaceflight. Emphasizing historical context, current capabilities, and emerging innovations, the study explores the influence of AI, miniaturization, international collaboration, and environmental considerations on propulsion development. Particular attention is paid to how future missions to Mars, Europa, Titan, and beyond necessitate more efficient, powerful, and sustainable propulsion systems. Additionally, the paper investigates how lunar technologies can be adapted for deep-space applications and identifies key challenges impeding progress, such as long development timelines, high costs, and integration complexity. Through analysis of current research, exploratory projects, and case studies, this paper provides insight into the technologies poised to revolutionize space travel and broaden the horizons of human and robotic exploration.

Presented are the acknowledgements and introduction sections of the book 'Space: Discovery and Exploration.' The goal of the book is to address some basic questions of American space history, including how this history compares with previous eras of exploration, why the space program was initiated when it was, and how the U.S. space program developed. In pursuing these questions, the intention is not to provide exhaustive answers, but to point the reader toward a more varied picture of how our venture in space has intersected with American government, politics, business, and science.

The International Space Exploration Coordination Group (ISECG) formed two Gap Assessment teams to evaluate topic discipline areas that had not been worked at an international level to date. Accordingly, the ISECG Technology Working Group (TWG) recommended two discipline areas based on Global Exploration Roadmap (GER) Critical Technology Needs reflected within the GER Technology Development Map (GTDM): Dust Mitigation and LOX/Methane Propulsion, with this paper addressing the former. The ISECG approved the recommended Gap Assessment teams, and tasked the TWG to formulate the new teams with subject matter experts (SMEs) from the participating agencies. The participating agencies for the Dust Mitigation Gap Assessment Team were ASI, CSA, ESA, JAXA, and NASA. The team was asked to identify and make a presentation on technology gaps related to the GER2 mission scenario (including cislunar and lunar mission themes and long-lead items for human exploration of Mars) at the international level. In addition the team was tasked to produce a gap assessment in the form of a summary report and presentation identifying those GER Critical Technology Needs, including opportunities for international coordination and cooperation in closing the identified gaps. Dust is still a principal limiting factor in returning to the lunar surface for missions of any extended duration. However, viable technology solutions have been identified, but need maturation to be available to support both lunar and Mars missions.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and its industry partners are making measurable progress toward delivering new human space transportation capabilities to serve as the catalyst for a new era of discovery, as directed by the U.S. Vision for Space Exploration. In the interest of ensuring prolonged support, the Agency encourages space advocates of all stripes to accurately portray both the tangible and intangible benefits of space exploration, especially its value for future generations. This may be done not only by emphasizing the nation's return on its aerospace investment, but also by highlighting enabling security features and by promoting the scientific and technological benefits that accrue from the human exploration of space. As America embarks on a new era of leadership and international partnership on the next frontier, we are poised to master space by living off-planet on the Moon to prepare astronauts for longer journeys to Mars. Introduction: In the vision of the future, the ever-increasing role of technology in everyday life and the growing ecological challenges, the analysis of social attitudes towards space exploration, artificial intelligence (AI) and ecological awareness is crucial to understanding contemporary and future social dynamics. Space exploration has fascinated humanity for years, arousing both enthusiasm and skepticism. Artificial intelligence, as a technology with potential, generates ambivalent attitudes - on the one hand, it is seen as a possibility of progress, on the other it raises fears. According to the research of Schepman and Rodway (2020), attitudes towards AI vary depending on the level of education and previous experience with technology. Environmental awareness plays an important role in shaping attitudes towards new technologies, as people with high ecological awareness often show greater criticism of their potential environmental threats (Dunlapi et al., 1978). In Poland, research on ecological awareness – in the adaptation of the New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) Scale – has shown growing concern for the environment, which may influence attitudes towards technology (Czujkowski, 2003). Understanding these attitudes in a comprehensive manner requires taking into account their mutual interactions, which may contribute to better informing the public, reducing barriers to accepting technology, and more effective design of educational and political activities. Research Question: How do public attitudes toward space exploration, artificial intelligence, and ecological awareness interact, and what factors influence these perceptions? Aim: This study aims to explore the relationships between attitudes toward space exploration, artificial intelligence, and ecological awareness. By identifying key psychological and sociological determinants of these attitudes, the research seeks to contribute to the discourse on public acceptance of new technologies and environmental responsibility. Hypothesis: H1: A negative attitude toward AI will correlate positively with a negative attitude toward exploration. Justification:The theory of resistance to change (Oreg, 2003) suggests that people who are resistant to one change may also be negative toward other innovations. Negative attitudes toward AI may coexist with negative attitudes toward space exploration, reflecting general skepticism toward the technology. H2: Higher environmental awareness will correlate negatively with a positive attitude toward space exploration. Justification: The theory of cognitive dissonance suggests that people strive for consistency between their beliefs and actions. People with high environmental awareness may experience dissonance if they support actions that potentially harm the environment. As a result, they will seek to reduce it. H3: Higher education will correlate positively with greater environmental awareness. Justification: People with higher education are more likely to demonstrate pro-ecological attitudes and are more aware of issues related to environmental protection. A study by the Ministry of Climate and Environment (2022) shows that people with higher education are more likely to engage in environmental protection activities. H4: Higher education will positively correlate with a positive attitude towards space exploration. Justification: Both in the article by Pyrkosz-Pacyna et al. (2022) and Marušić et al. (2018), the respondents indicate that education increases general knowledge about technologies related to space exploration, which positively affects the perception of its importance and value.

It is the best known novelisation of life as a convict in early Australian history. Described as a "ripping yarn", and at times relying on seemingly implausible coincidences, the story follows the fortunes of Rufus Dawes, a young man transported for a murder which he did not commit. The harsh and inhumane treatment meted out to the convicts, some of whom were transported for relatively minor crimes, is clearly conveyed. The conditions experienced by the convicts are graphically described. The novel was based on research by the author as well as a visit to the penal settlement of Port Arthur, Tasmania. Major Cowan introduces Lt. McGee as the British instructor for the crew. It turns out the Brit is actually an American, born in the U.S., even though his parents were British. McGee and Larkin are flying partners. Out on a mission, McGee spots a small enemy plane in a searchlight, probably intent on dropping flares to mark targets for bombers. He drives in for the attack successfully, as the enemy plane zooms earthward in flames. During another flight to Epernay, a fellow pilot, Siddons, fades back to a previous stop. McGee and Larkin suspect Siddons of aiding the enemy. Von Herzmann is preparing German pilots to fight Americans. Larkin and McGee defeat the enemy and force a retreat. In another battle, McGee must crash-land, where he passes out due to injuries. He spends weeks recovering in a hospital. When he is discharged, he cannot find his squadron. After diligent searching, he shows up at his old base. At the end, it is revealed that Siddons is not at all what he was suspected of being--in fact, the opposite. (Bill Boerst)

My aim in this book on Mythology for young readers has been to give them solid knowledge on the subject, as far as it is advisable to go with immature minds, based upon the most recent investigations of scholars, and to select the myths used in illustration of the plan, with a view to giving them interesting stories to read, which will, almost unconsciously to themselves, lay a firm foundation for the fascinating study of Comparative Mythology, should they wish to go more deeply into it in the future. <br><br> There is much talk nowadays as to the authenticity of the records of savage myths. Much of this talk seems to me futile, for a myth is not a fixed entity. Each successive narrator is almost sure to vary and embellish somewhat the material that comes to him, according to his own inventive fancy. If, therefore, a savage myth recorded by a white man retains the chief characteristics of the savage myth, in spite of some fanciful turns given it by him, to the degree, say, that a story of Ovid’s retains those of a Greek myth, it is to all intents and purposes a savage myth, and the embellishments may be disregarded, as Ovid’s are when we are considering Greek Mythology. I have, therefore, included in this volume those versions of the myths that seemed most readable and attractive, provided the primitive attitude of mind and customs were fully emphasized. - Summary by the author from the book

This 18th-century Latin textbook presents 202 Aesop's fables in Latin, "with an English translation more literal than any yet extant, designed for the readier instruction of beginners in the Latin tongue." There are fables here from the classical tradition, along with fables from the Renaissance author Abstemius and other neo-Latin sources. The book has the Latin and English texts in facing columns, with italic font being used to help students connect the Latin words in the left column with the English words in the right column.
