During the Second World War, there were many different people who were plunged into the heart of the deadliest conflict in History. On the Eastern Front and in the Soviet Union some of the bloodiest battles erupted and one man who was caught up in the fighting was 83 year old peasant farmer Matvey Kuzmin. Kuzmin was forced to house German soldiers on his land, and he was then forced to show the enemy where the nearest Red Army soldiers were. Kuzmin found out the route of the German advance, and his grandson then left to tell the Red Army where they were. This allowed the Red Army to prepare an ambush, and when the Germans moved forward guided by Kuzmin the Germans encountered heavy fire and dozens were killed. But one German Officer knew Kuzmin had turned on them, and with this he executed the 83 year old peasant on the battlefield there and then. He became one of the oldest victims of an execution during the Second World War on the Battlefield. Jeff Rutherford talks about his book, "Combat and Genocide on the Eastern Front: The German Infantry's War, 1941-1944", about combat and occupation policies of the German Army during World War II

The appearance of the T-34 in 1941 caused a crisis for German antitank forces. Existing antitank guns were nearly impotent against the new Russian tank, while antiaircraft and artillery pieces, though successful when pressed into action, were insufficiently mobile to accompany mechanized forces. The German Army Ordnance Office, the Heereswaffenamt, was responsible for development of new weapons and would be responsible for countering the threat of Russian armor. The Heereswaffenamt would need to not only counter the T-34, but also do so in an environment of shifting political relationships and with an increasingly stressed industrial system. Utilizing lessons from the bitterly contested battlefields of western Russia, the Heereswaffenamt developed a tankdestroyer, the Jagdpazer IV, using the existing chassis of the Panzer IV tank, and the guns of both the Panzer IV and Panther tanks. The Jagdpanzer IV, known by its crews as Guderian's Duck, proved to be a capable tank killer against both the T-34 threat of 1941 and 1942, as well as the improved versions of 1943 and 1944.

He acompanied the 6th Army trough its advance in Eastern Ukraine and Southern Russia in Summer and Autumn 1942, when the Army would advance towards Stalingrad. This is a collection of his footage. Since the camera had no microphone, there is no sound. I also did no editing at all. Studies of satellite imagery and space shuttle photographs of the western Mediterranean have indicated that the main path of inflowing Atlantic Water is around two large anticyclonic gyres in the Alboran Sea and along the Algerian Coast. These studies have also shown that a strong ocean front is present between Almeria, Spain, and Oran, Algeria, which is part of the easternmost segment of the Eastern Alboran Gyre. Based on these satellite studies, the first in situ investigation of the front, called here the Almeria-Oran Front, was conducted in March 1986 as part of the winter campaign of the Western Mediterranean Circulation Experiment (WMCE). Analyses of the resulting data show that the Almeria-Oran Front is a large-scale density front, formed by the convergence of two distinct water masses and controlled by geographic position and strength of the Eastern Alboran Gyre. Physical and biochemical data indicate that the front is limited to the upper 300 m, with a strong southward baroclinic jet. The secondary ageostrophic circulation is characterized by surface convergence, along isopycnal sinking, and upwelling on the western side of the front.

The last offensive on the Eastern Front of World War I occured from mid-February to early March 1918. The operation aimed to exploit the disarray in the Russian army following the Bolshevik Revolution and the later signing of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. The Central Powers, primarily Germany and Austria-Hungary, swiftly advanced into the demoralized and weakened Russian territories, capturing vast swaths of land. The Russians put up barely any resistance. The offensive's success forced the Bolshevik government to accept harsh terms in the peace negotiations, resulting in the loss of significant territories, including Ukraine, Belarus, and the Baltic states. The treaty ended the Eastern Front, allowing the Central Powers to redeploy forces to the Western Front in an attempt to secure a decisive victory there. Thus Winesburg tells the story of the townspeople's loneliness and alienation in parallel with the tale of George's own coming of age. Eamont was an opium clipper built in Cowes. It was the subject of an 1891 book, A cruise in an opium clipper, by Captain Lindsay Anderson. Eamont was involved in the opening of Japan to foreigners in 1858, serving as a dispatch boat between Nagasaki and Shanghai, and was one of the first vessels to open up a trade with Formosa…. The Eamont was sent on some very dangerous trips. She was one of the first vessels to open up a trade with Formosa, and made the first survey of the port of Taku, which she entered by bumping over the reef in spite of a tremendous surf beating upon it at the time, a most daring performance. And in her efforts to trade with the Formosans she had to withstand the attack of hundreds of armed natives right on top of a typhoon, which she succeeded in riding out on her moorings. But the captain of the Eamont was a famous fighting man, as the Chinese pirates knew to their cost…. The Eamont was also employed in the negotiations for the first commercial treaty with Japan. Anderson served as third officer aboard the Eamont. Eamont was an opium clipper built in Cowes. The Eamont was employed in the negotiations for the first commercial treaty with Japan. On this occasion she ran into Nagasaki and quietly dropped anchor, in spite of the fact that opposition to the proposed commercial treaty was very strong at the time. On the following morning 150 boat-loads of Japanese attempted to tow her to sea, being evidently ignorant of an anchor's raison d'etre. But though they attempted several similar methods to get rid of her they refrained from any armed attack, and, eventually, her mission was completely successful. This was in 1858, and the Eamont's crew saw many wonderful sights in that tierra incognita. The September Typhoon of 1858 destroyed several well-known opium clippers at Double Island, including the Anonyma, Gazelle, Pantaloon, and Mazeppa. Eamont was anchored off Double Island, with "150 fathoms of chain out and a second anchor backed on it at 60 fathoms." The waves in the anchorage were estimated to be as large as 40 feet, and the Eamont’s crew had to cut away her masts.
