A detailed knowledge of stellar activity is crucial for understanding stellar dynamos, as well as pushing exoplanet radial-velocity detection limits towards Earth analogue confirmation. We directly compare archival HARPS spectra taken at the minimum in $\alpha$ Cen B's activity cycle to a high-activity state when clear rotational modulation of $\log{R'_{HK}}$ is visible. Relative to the inactive spectra, we find a large number of narrow pseudo-emission features in the active spectra with strengths that are rotationally modulated. These features most likely originate from plage, spots, or a combination of both. They also display radial velocity variations of $\sim$300 m s$^{-1}$ - consistent with an active region rotating across the stellar surface. Furthermore, we see evidence that some of the lines originating from the `active immaculate' photosphere appear broader relative to the `inactive immaculate' case. This may be due to enhanced contributions of e.g. magnetic bright points to these lines, which then causes additional line broadening. More detailed analysis may enable measurements of plage and spot coverage using single spectra in the future.

We present two absolute magnitude calibrations for dwarfs based on colour-magnitude diagrams of Galactic clusters. The combination of the $M_g$ absolute magnitudes of the dwarf fiducial sequences of the clusters M92, M13, M5, NGC 2420, M67 and NGC 6791 with the corresponding metallicities provides absolute magnitude calibration for a given $(g-r)_0$ colour. The calibration is defined in the colour interval $0.25\leq (g-r)_0 \leq 1.25$ mag and it covers the metallicity interval $-2.15\leq \lbrack Fe/H\rbrack \leq +0.37$ dex. The absolute magnitude residuals obtained by the application of the procedure to another set of Galactic clusters lie in the interval $-0.15 \leq \Delta M_g \leq +0.12$ mag. The mean and standard deviation of the residuals are $ =-0.002$ and $\sigma=0.065$ mag, respectively. The calibration of the $M_J$ absolute magnitude in terms of metallicity is carried out by using the fiducial sequences of the clusters M92, M13, 47 Tuc, NGC 2158 and NGC 6791. It is defined in the colour interval $0.90 \leq (V-J)_0 \leq 1.75$ mag and it covers the same metallicity interval of the $M_g$ calibration. The absolute magnitude residuals obtained by the application of the procedure to the cluster M5 ($\lbrack Fe/H\rbrack=-1.40$ dex) and 46 solar metallicity, $-0.45 \leq \lbrack Fe/H\rbrack \leq +0.35$ dex, field stars lie in the interval -0.29 and +0.35 mag. However, the range of 87 per cent of them is rather shorter, $-0.2 \leq \Delta M_J \leq +0.2$ mag. The mean and standard deviation of all residuals are $ =0.05$ and $\sigma$=0.13 mag, respectively. The derived relations are applicable to stars older than 4 Gyr for the $M_g$ calibration, and older than 2 Gyr for the $M_J$ calibration. The cited limits are the ages of the youngest calibration clusters in the two systems.

Searches for magnetic fields in white dwarfs have clarified both the frequency of occurrence and the global structure of the fields found down to field strengths of the order of 500 kG. Below this level, the situation is still very unclear. We are studying the weakest fields found in white dwarfs to determine the frequency of such fields and their structure. We describe a very sensitive new method of measuring such fields in DA (H-rich) white dwarfs, and search for a field in the brightest such star, 40 Eri B. Our new method makes use of the strongly enhanced polarisation signal in the sharp core of Halpha. We find that with one-hour integrations with the high-resolution spectropolarimeter ESPaDOnS on the 3.6-m CFHT, we can reach a standard error fo the longitudinal field of about 85 G, the smallest error ever achieved for any white dwarf. Nevertheless, we do not detect a magnetic field in this star. Observations with ISIS at the WHT, and the Main Stellar Spectrograph at the SAO, support the absence of a field at somewhat lower precision. The new method is very efficient; it is shown that for suitable DA stars the integration time, with ESPaDOnS on a 3.6-m telescope, to reach a 500 G standard error on a white dwarf of V = 12.5, is about half an hour, about the same as the time required on an ESO 8-m telescope with FORS using conventional low-resolution spectropolarimetry.

Arguably, the best method for determining the effective temperature ($T_{\mathrm{eff}}$) and surface gravity (log $g$) of a DA white dwarf is by fitting the Hydrogen Lyman and Balmer absorption features. However, as has been shown for white dwarfs with $T_{\mathrm{eff}}$>50,000K, the calculated value from the Lyman and Balmer lines are discrepant, which worsens with increasing temperature. Many different solutions have been suggested, ranging from the input physics used to calculate the models, to interstellar reddening. We will focus on the former, and consider three variables. The first is the atomic data used, namely the number of transitions included in line blanketing treatments and the photoionization cross sections. The second is the stark broadening treatment used to synthesise the Lyman and Balmer line profiles, namely the calculations performed by Lemke (1997) and Tremblay & Bergeron (2009). Finally, the third is the atmospheric content. The model grids are calculated with a pure H composition, and a metal polluted composition using the abundances of Preval et al. (2013). We present the preliminary results of our analysis, whereby we have determined the $T_{\mathrm{eff}}$ for a small selection of white dwarfs. We plan to extend our analysis by allowing metallicity to vary in future model grids.

This paper explores how the stochastic accretion of planetesimals onto white dwarfs would be manifested in observations of their atmospheric pollution. Archival observations of pollution levels for unbiased samples of DA and non-DA white dwarfs are used to derive the distribution of accretion rates, confirming that rates become systematically lower as sinking time is decreased, with no discernable dependence on cooling age. The accretion rates expected from planetesimals that are all the same mass (ie, a mono-mass distribution) are explored both analytically and using a Monte Carlo model, quantifying how measured accretion rates inevitably depend on sinking time, since different sinking times probe different times since the last accretion event. However, that dependence is so dramatic that a mono-mass distribution can be excluded. Consideration of accretion from a broad distribution of planetesimal masses uncovers an important conceptual difference: accretion is continuous (rather than stochastic) for planetesimals below a certain mass, and the accretion of such planetesimals determines the rate typically inferred from observations; smaller planetesimals dominate the rates for shorter sinking times. A reasonable fit to the observationally inferred accretion rate distributions is found with model parameters consistent with a collisionally evolved mass distribution up to Pluto-mass, and an underlying accretion rate distribution consistent with that expected from descendants of debris discs of main sequence A stars. With these parameters, while both DA and non-DA white dwarfs accrete from the same broad planetesimal distribution, this model predicts that the pollution seen in DAs is dominated by the continuous accretion of 35km objects (though the dominant size varies between stars by around an order of magnitude from this value)...

It has been shown that the shape of the luminosity function of white dwarfs can be a powerful tool to check for the possible existence of DFSZ-axions. In particular, Isern et al. (2008) showed that, if the axion mass is of the order of a few meV, then the white dwarf luminosity function is sensitive enough to detect their existence. For axion masses of about $m_a > 5$ meV the axion emission can be a primary cooling mechanism for the white dwarf and the feedback of the axion emission into the thermal structure of the white dwarf needs to be considered. Here we present computations of white dwarf cooling sequences that take into account the effect of axion emission in a self consistent way by means of full stellar evolution computations. Then, we study and discuss the impact of the axion emission in the white dwarf luminosity function.

We study the effect of a white dwarf on the spin-down of a cataclysmic variable system using a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic numerical model. The model includes the stellar corona, the stellar wind, and the WD mass and magnetic field. The existence of the WD modifies the system spin-down by physically blocking the stellar wind, restructuring the wind, channeling the wind towards the WD surface, and by modifying the shape and size of the Alfv\'en surface. The combination of these processes differs among a set of simple test cases, and the resulting angular momentum loss rates vary by factors of 2-3, and by factors of two relative to a test model with a single M dwarf. While the model employs some simplifications, the results suggest angular momentum loss schemes currently employed in cataclysmic variable studies do not require drastic revision. Insights are also gained on wind accretion. We find that efficient accretion switches on quite rapidly with decreasing orbital separation. Accretion rates depend on magnetic field alignment and should be modulated by magnetic cycles on the M dwarf. For particular values of white dwarf magnetic field strength, an efficient syphoning of coronal plasma from the inward facing M dwarf hemisphere occurs. Wind accretion rates are expected to vary by factors of 10 or more between fairly similar close binaries, depending on magnetic field strengths and orbital separation.

We present a new distance determination to the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae by fitting the spectral energy distributions of its white dwarfs to pure hydrogen atmosphere white dwarf models. Our photometric dataset is obtained from a 121 orbit Hubble Space Telescope program using the Wide Field Camera 3 UVIS/IR channels, capturing F390W, F606W, F110W, and F160W images. These images cover more than 60 square arcmins and extend over a radial range of 5-13.7 arcmin (6.5-17.9 pc) within the globular cluster. Using a likelihood analysis, we obtain a best fitting unreddened distance modulus of (m - M)o=13.36+/-0.02+/-0.06 corresponding to a distance of 4.70+/-0.04+/-0.13 kpc, where the first error is random and the second is systematic. We also search the white dwarf photometry for infrared excess in the F160W filter, indicative of debris disks or low mass companions, and find no convincing cases within our sample.

Despite their unique astrophysical relevance, the outcome of white dwarf binary mergers has so far only been studied for a very restricted number of systems. Here we present the results of a survey with more than two hundred simulations systematically scanning the white dwarf binary parameter space. We consider white dwarf masses ranging from 0.2 to 1.2 $M_\odot$ and account for their different chemical compositions. We find excellent agreement with the orbital evolution predicted by mass transfer stability analysis. Much of our effort in this paper is dedicated to determining which binary systems are prone to a thermonuclear explosion just prior to merger or at surface contact. We find that a large fraction of He-accreting binary systems explode: all dynamically unstable systems with accretor masses below 1.1 $M_\odot$ and donor masses above $\sim$ 0.4 $M_\odot$ are found to trigger a helium detonation at surface contact. A substantial fraction of these systems could explode at earlier times via detonations induced by instabilities in the accretion stream, as we have demonstrated in our previous work. We do not find definitive evidence for an explosion prior to merger or at surface contact in any of the studied double carbon-oxygen systems. Although we cannot exclude their occurrence if some helium is present, the available parameter space for a successful detonation in a white dwarf binary of pure carbon-oxygen composition is small. We demonstrate that a wide variety of dynamically unstable systems are viable type Ia candidates. The next decade thus holds enormous promise for the study of these events, in particular with the advent of wide-field synoptic surveys allowing a detailed characterization of their explosive properties.

We present a detailed analysis of a large spectroscopic and photometric sample of DZ white dwarfs based on our latest model atmosphere calculations. We revise the atmospheric parameters of the trigonometric parallax sample of Bergeron, Leggett, & Ruiz (12 stars) and analyze 147 new DZ white dwarfs discovered in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The inclusion of metals and hydrogen in our model atmosphere calculations leads to different atmospheric parameters than those derived from pure helium models. Calcium abundances are found in the range from log (Ca/He) = -12 to -8. We also find that fits of the coolest objects show peculiarities, suggesting that our physical models may not correctly describe the conditions of high atmospheric pressure encountered in the coolest DZ stars. We find that the mean mass of the 11 DZ stars with trigonometric parallaxes, = 0.63 Mo, is significantly lower than that obtained from pure helium models, = 0.78 Mo, and in much better agreement with the mean mass of other types of white dwarfs. We determine hydrogen abundances for 27% of the DZ stars in our sample, while only upper limits are obtained for objects with low signal-to-noise ratio spectroscopic data. We confirm with a high level of confidence that the accretion rate of hydrogen is at least two orders of magnitude smaller than that of metals (and up to five in some cases) to be compatible with the observations. We find a correlation between the hydrogen abundance and the effective temperature, suggesting for the first time empirical evidence of a lower temperature boundary for the hydrogen screening mechanism. Finally, we speculate on the possibility that the DZA white dwarfs could be the result of the convective mixing of thin hydrogen-rich atmospheres with the underlying helium convection zone.

We have determined magnesium isotopic ratios (^{25,26}Mg/Mg) in metal-poor (-2.6 [Fe/H] -1.3) halo dwarfs employing high S/N (90-280) high spectral resolution (R = 10^5) Keck HIRES spectra. Unlike previous claims of an important contribution from intermediate-mass AGB stars at low metallicities, we find that the rise of the AGB contribution in the Galactic halo did not occur until intermediate metallicities ([Fe/H] ~> -1.5).

We discuss the possibility to detect O/Ne white dwarfs by evidence for Ne overabundances. The hottest known WD, H1504+65, could be the only single WD for which we might be able to proof its O/Ne nature directly. Apart from this, strong Ne abundances are known or suspected only from binary systems, namely from a few novae, and from a handful of LMXBs. We try to verify the hypothesis that the latter might host strongly ablated O/Ne WD donors, by abundance analyses of the accretion disks in these systems. In any case, to conclude on O/Ne WDs just by strong Ne overabundances is problematic, because Ne enrichment also occurs by settling of this species into the core of C/O WDs.

We present the results of a V-band photometric monitoring survey of 15 late-type dwarfs in the young open cluster IC 4665. Low-amplitude periodic light variations are found for 8 stars and ascribed to the modulation by starspots that cover typically a few percent of the stellar disk. Periods range from 0.6 to 3.7 d, translating to equatorial velocities between 13 and 93 km/s. That no period longer than 4 d was detected suggests a relative paucity of extremely slow rotators (V(sub eq) much less than 10 km/s) among late-type dwarfs in IC 4665. The fractional number of slow rotators in IC 4665 is similar to that of Alpha Per cluster, suggesting that IC 4665 is close in age to Alpha Per (approx. 50 Myr).

We have performed a census of disks around brown dwarfs in the Sigma Ori cluster using all available images from IRAC onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. To search for new low-mass cluster members with disks, we have measured photometry for all sources in the Spitzer images and have identified the ones that have red colors that are indicative of disks. We present 5 promising candidates, which may consist of 2 brown dwarfs, 2 stars with edge-on disks, and a low-mass protostar if they are bona fide members. Spectroscopy is needed to verify the nature of these sources. We have also used the Spitzer data to determine which of the previously known probable members of Sigma Ori are likely to have disks. By doing so, we measure disk fractions of ~40% and ~60% for low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, respectively. These results are similar to previous estimates of disk fractions in IC 348 and Cha I, which have roughly the same median ages as Sigma Ori (3 Myr). Finally, we note that our photometric measurements and the sources that we identify as having disks differ significantly from those of other recent studies that analyzed the same Spitzer images. For instance, previous work has suggested that the T dwarf S Ori 70 is redder than typical field dwarfs, which has been cited as possible evidence of youth and cluster membership. However, we find that this object is only slightly redder than the reddest field dwarfs in [3.6]-[4.5] (1.56+/-0.07 vs. 0.93-1.46). We measure a larger excess in [3.6]-[5.8] (1.75+/-0.21 vs. 0.87-1.19), but the flux at 5.8um may be overestimated because of the low signal-to-noise ratio of the detection. Thus, the Spitzer data do not offer strong evidence of youth and membership for this object, which is the faintest and coolest candidate member of Sigma Ori that has been identified to date.

We report the results of our HST snapshot survey with the ACS HRC PR200L prism, designed to measure the near-UV emission in a sample of nearby M dwarfs. 33 stars were observed, spanning the mass range from 0.1 - 0.6 solar masses (T_eff ~ 2200K - 4000K) where the UV energy distributions vary widely between active and inactive stars. These observations provide much-needed constraints on models of the habitability zone and the atmospheres of possible terrestrial planets orbiting M dwarf hosts, and will be useful in refining the target selection for future space missions such as TPF. We compare our data with a new generation of M dwarf atmospheric models and discuss their implication for the chromospheric energy budget. These NUV data will also be valuable in conjunction with existing optical, FUV and X-ray data to explore unanswered questions regarding the dynamo generation and magnetic heating in low-mass stars.

Hierarchical triple systems are common among field stars yet their long-term evolution is poorly understood theoretically. In such systems Kozai cycles can be induced in the inner binary system during which the inner orbit eccentricity and the inclination between both binary orbits vary periodically. These cycles, combined with tidal friction and gravitational wave emission, can significantly affect the inner binary evolution. To investigate these effects quantitatively we perform a population synthesis study of triple systems and focus on evolutionary paths that lead to mergers of carbon-oxygen (CO) white dwarfs (WDs), which constitute an important candidate progenitor channel for type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). We approach this problem by Monte Carlo sampling from observation-based distributions of systems within the primary mass range 1.0 - 6.5 M_Sun and inner orbit semi-major axes a_1 and eccentricities e_1 satisfying a_1 (1-e_1^2) > 12 AU, i.e. non-interacting in the absence of a tertiary component. We evolve these systems by means of a newly developed algorithm that couples secular triple dynamics with an existing binary population synthesis code. We find that the tertiary significantly alters the inner binary evolution in about 24% of all sampled systems. In particular, we find several channels leading to CO WD mergers. Amongst these is a novel channel in which a collision occurs in wide inner binary systems as a result of extremely high eccentricities induced by Kozai cycles. With assumptions on which CO WD mergers lead to a SN Ia explosion we estimate the SNe Ia delay time distribution resulting from triples and compare to a binary population synthesis study and to observations. Although we find that our triple rate is low, we have determined a lower limit of the triple-induced SNe Ia rate and further study is needed that includes triples with initially tighter inner orbits.

We have obtained 53 images with the $g$ filter and 19 images with the $i$ filter, each with 600-second exposures of the super metal rich open cluster NGC 6253 with the Gemini-South telescope to create deep images of the cluster to observe the cluster white dwarfs for the first time. We will analyze the white dwarf luminosity function to measure the cluster's white dwarf age, search for any anomalous features (as has been seen in the similarly metal rich cluster NGC 6791), and constrain the initial-final mass relation at high metallicities. We present an update on these observations and our program to study the formation of white dwarfs in super high metallicity environments.

Carbon monoxide and ammonia have been detected in the spectrum of Gl 229B at abundances that differ substantially from those obtained from chemical equilibrium. Vertical mixing in the atmosphere is a mechanism that can drive slowly reacting species out of chemical equilibrium. We explore the effects of vertical mixing as a function of mixing efficiency and effective temperature on the chemical abundances in the atmospheres of brown dwarfs and on their spectra. The models compare favorably with the observational evidence and indicate that vertical mixing plays an important role in brown dwarf atmospheres.

The census of solar neighbours is still complemented by new discoveries, mainly of very low-mass, faint dwarfs, close to or within the substellar domain. These discoveries contribute to a better understanding of the field population; its origin in terms of Galactic dynamics and (sub)stellar formation and evolution. Also, the nearest stars and brown dwarfs at any given age allow the most precise direct characterization, including the search for planetary companions. We have detected weak absorption features produced by the strong nu(3) methane band at 3.3 microns in two L dwarfs, 2MASSW J1507476-162738 and 2MASSI J0825196+211552, classified by Kirkpatrick et al. (2000) as spectral types L5 and L7.5 respectively. These absorptions occur in objects warmer than any in which methane previously has been detected, and mark the first appearance of methane in the ultracool star-to-brown dwarf spectral sequence.

We have identified a large sample of probable low mass members of the young open cluster IC2391 based on optical (VRIZ) and Infrared (JHK$_s$) photometry. Our sample includes 50 probable members and 82 possible members, both very low mass stars and brown dwarfs. We also provide accurate positions for these stars and brown dwarf candidates derived from red UK Schmidt plates measured using the microdensitometer SuperCOSMOS. Assuming an age of 53 Myr, we estimate that we have reached a mass of 0.025 M$_\odot$, if the identified objects are indeed members of IC2391.
