The Aspen Institute Community Dialogue on Healing the Racial Divide, which convenes a morning of discussions among St. Louis community activists and leaders.The Dialogue, created with the aid of Teach for America, St. Louis, is intended to bring together leaders from the fields of education, journalism, law enforcement, business and community organizing—groups that rarely have opportunities for collaborative dialogue—to have a candid exchange aimed at addressing the racial divide in St. Louis. St. Louis remains one of the most racially segregated metropolitan areas in the United States. School district boundaries divide students in racially separated schools, making it difficult for students of color to receive the first-class education of their white counterparts. According to a report released by the Department of Education, black and Latino children nationwide are the least likely to be taught by a qualified and experienced teacher, to be offered courses such as chemistry and calculus or to have access to technology. While there is a desperate need for reform strategies and effective policies, part of the achievement gap between whites and blacks is greatly influenced by teacher accountability, family engagement and student performance. Recently, type Ia supernovae data appear to support a dark energy whose equation of state $w$ crosses -1, which is a much more amazing problem than the acceleration of the universe. We show that it is possible for the equation of state to cross the phantom divide by a scalar field in the gravity with an additional inverse power-law term of Ricci scalar in the Lagrangian. The necessary and sufficient condition for a universe in which the dark energy can cross the phantom divide is obtained. Some analytical solutions with $w -1$ are obtained. A minimal coupled scalar with different potentials, including quadratic, cubic, quantic, exponential and logarithmic potentials are investigated via numerical methods, respectively. All these potentials lead to the crossing behavior. We show that it is a robust result which is hardly dependent on the concrete form of the potential of the scalar.

In this paper we consider a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmological model with cosmological constant, containing a stiff fluid and a classical Dirac field. The proposed cosmological scenario describes the evolution of effective dark matter and dark energy components reproducing, with the help of that effective multifluid configuration, the quintessential behavior. We find the value of the scale factor where the effective dark energy component crosses the phantom divide. The model we introduce, which can be considered as a modified $\Lambda$CDM one, is characterized by a set of parameters which may be constrained by the astrophysical observations available up to date.

This scoping review examines the barriers to technology use in managing Type 1 diabetes (T1D) among underrepresented racial and ethnic groups (URGs) in the United States. Despite advancements in diabetes technology, such as insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), significant disparities persist in their adoption among minority populations. Factors such as systemic racism, cultural mistrust, limited access to specialists, financial challenges, and insufficient digital literacy contribute to the digital divide, exacerbating health outcomes in these communities. Addressing these barriers is crucial for equitable diabetes care.

Support for high-level divide-and-conquer programming provided by the nondeterministic divide is investigated. A diva algorithm is a recursive divide-and-conquer sequential algorithm on one or more vectors of the same range, whose division point for a new pair of recursive calls is chosen nondeterministically before any computation is performed and whose recursive calls are made immediately after the choice of division point; also, access to vector components is only permitted during activations in which the vector parameters have unit length. The notion of diva algorithm is formulated precisely as a diva call, a restricted call on a sequential procedure. Diva calls are proven to be intimately related to associativity. Numerous applications of diva calls are given and strategies are described for translating a diva call into code for a variety of parallel computers. Thus diva algorithms separate logical correctness concerns from implementation concerns.

In this paper we present randomized algorithms for sorting and convex hull that achieves optimal performance (for speed-up and cache misses) on the multicore model with private cache model. Our algorithms are cache oblivious and generalize the randomized divide and conquer strategy given by Reischuk and Reif and Sen. Although the approach yielded optimal speed-up in the PRAM model, we require additional techniques to optimize cache-misses in an oblivious setting. Under a mild assumption on input and number of processors our algorithm will have optimal time and cache misses with high probability. Although similar results have been obtained recently for sorting, we feel that our approach is simpler and general and we apply it to obtain an optimal parallel algorithm for 3D convex hulls with similar bounds. We also present a simple randomized processor allocation technique without the explicit knowledge of the number of processors that is likely to find additional applications in resource oblivious environments.

Results from Chandra-HST-VLA observations of 13 hybrid sources are presented. Data from ten sources in the literature are analysed along with new data from three hybrid blazars belonging to the MOJAVE sample. Studies of such hybrid sources displaying both FRI and FRII jet characteristics could provide the key to resolving the long-standing Fanaroff-Riley dichotomy issue. A majority of the 13 hybrid sources show FRII-like total radio powers, i.e., they are "hybrid" in radio morphology but not in total radio power. VLBI observations of ten of the 13 sources show that the X-ray jet is on the same side as the one-sided VLBI jet. X-rays are therefore emitted from relativistically-boosted approaching jets. This is consistent with the X-ray emission being IC/CMB in origin in the majority of sources. It is not completely clear from our study that asymmetries in the surrounding medium can create hybrid sources. Hybrid radio morphologies could also be indicative of intrinsically asymmetric jets.

The Taliban is a fractious organization. In their drive for post-9/11 power, they have set aside a number of ideological positions to defeat a common enemy. As this month's actions have shown, even the identity of that common enemy is a subject of debate and friction. This, in turn, has led to a fracturing of the Taliban itself. Within the Taliban, despite earlier pledges to drive foreign forces out of Afghanistan, the center of gravity in their internal power struggles is increasingly in Pakistan's tribal territories, the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). It is there, more so than any province in Afghanistan, that the fate of the Taliban will be decided. Without the strategic depth they enjoy in the FATA, the Taliban cannot carry on their campaign in Afghanistan. When events in the FATA take a violent turn, actions on the other side of the Durand Line slow down, something that has infuriated Mullah Omar. The fight against Islamic extremism in South Asia will be decided in Pakistan's tribal areas.
