Abstract Cervical cancer prevention is expected to be achieved by vaccination of girls 2-3 years before sexual debut, and cervical smear cytology follow-up. The existing human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines target the low-risk 6 and 11, and the high-risk 16 and 18 subtypes, the most common agents of ano-genital pre-invasive and invasive lesions. We conducted the review by searching PubMed using the terms “HPV,” “HPV subtypes,” “developing world,” and “HPV-vaccine” to retrieve articles published between 2000 and 2011. We focused on studies that were relevant to the developing world. The proposed vaccination policy is currently unachievable in the developing world because of the cost of the vaccine, the lack of adequate cytology and follow-up infrastructures. Moreover, the subtypes of HPV involved in cervical pathology, their associations, and natural history (clearance and persistence rates) differ from the industrialized world. Therefore, the current bivalent and quadrivalent anti-HPV vaccines are unlikely to achieve their target in the developing world. It follows from published data that there is an obligation of the pharmaceutical industry and of the public-health policy makers not to embark on mass vaccination campaigns without thorough information and investigation of the local relevance.

This learning module aims to engage students in problem solving, critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and cooperative learning. The module is appropriate for use in any introductory or intermediate undergraduate course that focuses on human-environment relationships. The module stresses the key principals, concepts, and problems in the emerging field of industrial ecology. It focuses on three broad themes: the linkages among technological change, industrial change, and global environmental change; the utility of a systems approach to analyzing industrial activity; and the opportunities and constraints involved in making industries more closely resemble ecosystems in their productive and consumptive processes. Activities in the module are designed to address these themes through more specific scenarios, such as product life cycle analyses and the examination of local businesses. The module contains 6 figures, a guide, a summary, an overview, a glossary, references for all units, supporting materials, and suggested readings. The passion and scramble for foreign capital by developing and less developed economies to supplement their domestic resources cannot be overemphasized. The existing and growing mismatch between domestic capital stock of developing and less developed economies and their capital requirements for investment purposes has been adduced as the cause for this scramble. Various studies have attempted to explore the reasons for the appetite and hunger for foreign capital especially by developing and less developed countries with mixed findings. Foreign direct investment FDI is an aspect of international capital inflows and refers to investment that confers controlling ownership of a business in one country to a different entity in another country. For this study, FDI is proxied by Gross Fixed Capital Formation, exchange Rate, Interest Rate and Market Capitalisation The main objective of this study is to explore the effect of FDI on human capital development in Nigeria. The specific objectives are to explore, determine, assess, examine and ascertain the effect of foreign direct investment, gross fixed capital formation, exchange rate, interest rate and market capitalization respectively on human capital development in Nigeria. The study adopted ex post facto research design and sourced data from the Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin and Annual Reports and the World Bank Development Indicators were analyzed using Descriptive Statistics, Augmented Dicker Fuller tests for unit roots and Autoregressive Distributive Lag ARDL for the hypothesis. The study found that foreign direct investment has no long run effect on human capital development Nigeria but rather has positive and significant short run effect on human capital development in Nigeria. It is recommended that government should reduce emphasis on foreign direct investment and rely on it strictly for short term plans as it does not have long run effect on human capital development in Nigeria. Abstract Background: Mobile health (mHealth) has the potential to solve human resource issues in the health care sector. mHealth is of particular interest in developing countries, where widespread mobile networks and access to devices are connecting people like never before. Objective: The aim of this paper was to review published and unpublished literature, field projects, and pilot studies on mHealth usage in overcoming shortage of human health resources in developing countries. Methods: A narrative literature review was undertaken using an iterative approach in extracting literature focused on mHealth and human health resources of low-income countries, especially India. The present review has undertaken comprehensive coverage of the work on related field projects that have been either published, accepted for publication, or pilot tested. Results: This review presented the use of mHealth across various dimensions of primary health care, including data collection, disease surveillance, health education, supervision, monitoring, and feedback. Field studies of fast, error-free data collection and transmission using mHealth were also documented. New apps for supervision, monitoring, and utilization of innovative health education tools were documented in the current review. Practical limitations of mHealth and challenges set forth in developing countries included issues of data security, cost constraints, health provider privacy, and technical barriers. Conclusions: In the present review, we have documented a few mHealth projects that contribute to the proficient use of human resources. These projects pave the path for the efficient utilization of mHealth, offering solutions to emerging human resource challenges and simultaneously revamping the health care delivery in resource-limited settings.

Abstract FRMD7 mutations are associated with X-linked idiopathic congenital nystagmus (ICN); however, the underlying mechanisms whereby mutations of FRMD7 lead to ICN remain unclear. In a previous study, the first FRMD7 splice variant (FRMD7-S) was cloned and identified, and FRMD7-S was hypothesized to play a significant role in neuronal differentiation and development. The present study investigated a novel multiple exon-skipping mRNA splice variant of FRMD7, termed FRMD7_SV2, which was detected in NT2 cells using northern blotting. The mRNA expression levels of FRMD7_SV2 in the developing human fetal brain were examined using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR), while the expression levels in NT2 cells treated with retinoid acid (RA) or bone morphogenetic protein-2 were investigated using quantitative PCR. The results revealed that the expression of FRMD7_SV2 was spatially and temporally restricted in human fetal brain development, and was upregulated upon RA-induced neuronal differentiation of the NT2 cells. These results indicated that as a novel splice variant of FRMD7, FRMD7_SV2 may play a role in neuronal development.

Testimonies are presented from U.S. Senate hearings on oversight of Title III of the Higher Education Act, Developing Institutions Programs. The new eligibility criteria established by the Education Amendment of 1980 for schools seeking to compete for grants under the Title III institutional aid programs are being reconsidered. The institutional aid programs were established to assist 2- and 4-year colleges expand their enrollments and attract outside financial resources. Four amendments that have been prepared to alter the program eligibility requirements are examined by representatives of government, colleges, and educational groups. It is suggested that Congress presumably intended the eligibility factors to identify institutions that need special assistance because they enroll large numbers of low-income students and because their ability to provide essential educational services is limited. The first two amendments would eliminate the requirement for a statistically high average student financial assistance award as a consideration for eligibility. For Part A, only Pell grants are considered; for Part B, all Title IV need-based student assistance is considered. The third amendment repeals the new formula for calculating full-time equivalent students for purposes of determining average education and general (E. & G.) expenses, and the fourth amendment deals with the computation of E. & G. expenses for institutional aid eligibility. The U.S. Department of Education supports the proposed amendments, without which many institutions that Congress presumably intended to participate in Title III will not be eligible. The Schiller Institute conference on May 8 offered a proof of principle that people can be mobilized by an appeal to the higher humanity which resides in all humans. Helga Zepp LaRouche reviewed the many dangers facing mankind: of war -- including a real possibility of nuclear war; famine, created by sanctions and deliberate refusal to fund development; of an out-of-control pandemic, as in India, and many other nations lacking a modern health care system; and of the devastating effects of growing inflation, which destroy people's life-work and the ability of families to survive. But she pointed to the dialogue which occurred during the two panels, which demonstrates a willingness to grapple with profound questions, and to the role of the Schiller Institute in creating a forum for building support for solutions. She also highly recommended a video of Minister Louis Farrakhan performing the Beethoven Violin Concerto, as an example of how an act of creativity can inspire the quality of agape needed to break free of the Darwinian world imposed by those oligarchs who she characterized as possessed of "dead souls."

Developmental trajectories within the fetal brain can also be susceptible to alteration and can manifest as lifelong neurodevelopmental impairments. Despite growing recognition of its importance as an outcome, a lack of coherence within the investigation of the neurodevelopmental outcomes remains. Important methodological clarity could be gained through reviewing published data regarding neurodevelopmental outcomes within the context of confirmed structural teratogens. This scoping review will use systematic searches to identify neurodevelopmental outcome data for medications demonstrated to alter the physical development of the fetus (i.e. structural malformations or growth disruption). Searches will be conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the specialized database Reprotox. Identified abstracts will be doubly reviewed against the eligibility criteria and data extracted. A narrative review will be undertaken, reporting on the key neurodevelopmental areas frequently altered, methodological features of completed studies (e.g. study designs, child characteristics, dose relationships, etc) and, importantly, the relationship between the structural alterations associated with the exposure and the observed neurodevelopmental outcomes.

This article is from Scientific Reports , volume 4 . Abstract The developing human brain remains one of the few unsolved mysteries of science. Advancements in developmental biology, neuroscience, and medical imaging have brought us closer than ever to understand brain development in health and disease. However, the precise role of mechanics throughout this process remains underestimated and poorly understood. Here we show that mechanical stretch plays a crucial role in brain development. Using the nonlinear field theories of mechanics supplemented by the theory of finite growth, we model the human brain as a living system with a morphogenetically growing outer surface and a stretch-driven growing inner core. This approach seamlessly integrates the two popular but competing hypotheses for cortical folding: axonal tension and differential growth. We calibrate our model using magnetic resonance images from very preterm neonates. Our model predicts that deviations in cortical growth and thickness induce morphological abnormalities. Using the gyrification index, the ratio between the total and exposed surface area, we demonstrate that these abnormalities agree with the classical pathologies of lissencephaly and polymicrogyria. Understanding the mechanisms of cortical folding in the developing human brain has direct implications in the diagnostics and treatment of neurological disorders, including epilepsy, schizophrenia, and autism.

The outstanding human cognitive capacities are computed in the cerebral cortex, a mammalian-specific brain region and the place of massive biological innovation. Long noncoding RNAs have emerged as gene regulatory elements with higher evolutionary turnover than mRNAs. The many long noncoding RNAs identified in neural tissues make them candidates for molecular sources of cerebral cortex evolution and disease. Here, we characterized the genomic and cellular shifts that occurred during the evolution of the long noncoding RNA repertoire expressed in the developing cerebral cortex and explored putative roles for these long noncoding RNAs in the evolution of the human brain. Using transcriptomics and comparative genomics, we comprehensively annotated the cortical transcriptomes of humans, rhesus macaques, mice, and chickens and classified human cortical long noncoding RNAs into evolutionary groups as a function of their predicted minimal ages. Long noncoding RNA evolutionary groups showed differences in expression levels, splicing efficiencies, transposable element contents, genomic distributions, and transcription factor binding to their promoters. Furthermore, older long noncoding RNAs showed preferential expression in germinative zones, outer radial glial cells, and cortical inhibitory (GABAergic) neurons. In comparison, younger long noncoding RNAs showed preferential expression in cortical excitatory (glutamatergic) neurons, were enriched in primate and human-specific gene co-expression modules, and were dysregulated in neurodevelopmental disorders. These results suggest different evolutionary routes for older and younger cortical long noncoding RNAs, highlighting old long noncoding RNAs as a possible source of molecular evolution of conserved developmental programs; conversely, we propose that the de novo expression of primate- and human-specific young long noncoding RNAs is a putative source of molecular evolution and dysfunction of cortical excitatory neurons, warranting further investigation.

This article is from PLoS Genetics , volume 10 . Abstract Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is highly polymorphic at the population level, and specific mtDNA variants affect mitochondrial function. With emerging evidence that mitochondrial mechanisms are central to common human diseases, it is plausible that mtDNA variants contribute to the “missing heritability” of several complex traits. Given the central role of mtDNA genes in oxidative phosphorylation, the same genetic variants would be expected to alter the risk of developing several different disorders, but this has not been shown to date. Here we studied 38,638 individuals with 11 major diseases, and 17,483 healthy controls. Imputing missing variants from 7,729 complete mitochondrial genomes, we captured 40.41% of European mtDNA variation. We show that mtDNA variants modifying the risk of developing one disease also modify the risk of developing other diseases, thus providing independent replication of a disease association in different case and control cohorts. High-risk alleles were more common than protective alleles, indicating that mtDNA is not at equilibrium in the human population, and that recent mutations interact with nuclear loci to modify the risk of developing multiple common diseases.

Do remember reading a panic-mongering news story a while back about genetically engineered “Frankengrass” “escaping” from the golf course where it had been planted? That news story was foreshadowed decades previously in the form of prophetic fiction wherein a pushy salesman, a cash-strapped scientist, and a clump of crabgrass accidentally merge forces with apocalyptic consequences. A triple-genre combo of science fiction, horror, and satire, Greener Than You Think is a forgotten classic that resonates beautifully with modern times. In 1921, American poet H.D. collected and published a selection of previously published poems by Marianne Moore. Although this angered Moore, as it was entirely unauthorized, she later accepted the edition as well made and used it as the basis for her own 1924 publication of Observations. Moore's unique poetry matches the experimentation underway during the American Modernist movement. Much of it incorporates seemingly out-of-place quotations into complex free verse that often uses Nature as a subject matter. <BR><BR> Today, despite the self-motivated alteration of her poetry in later life, done much to the dismay of her devotees, scholars consider Moore a significant American poet worthy of intense study in an a unalterable place in the canon.<br /> (Summary by Oscar Goff)</br>

Thus opens the novel about Esther Waters, young, pious woman from a poor working class family who, while working as a kitchen maid, is seduced by another employee, becomes pregnant, is deserted by her lover, and against all odds decides to raise her child as a single mother.
