Hi there! Welcome to Stories That Made Us. This week, we traverse through the great African continent and bring you the creation myths of four tribes - the Dinka of South Sudan, the Dogon of Mali, and Burkina Faso, the Efe of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Efik of Nigeria and Cameroon. African mythology is as beautiful as it is vast. The continent, after all, contains many languages, tribes, and cultures as diverse as the Nilotic peoples of Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, and more, to the San and Shona in southern Africa. The first tale is of the Dinka. They are the descendants of an ancient people who are native to South Sudan and had settled along the river Nile. This particular name "Dinka" has been given to them by the Europeans. They actually call themselves Muonjang or Jieng. They have traditionally engaged in agriculture and animal rearing and herding. Domesticating and rearing cattle constitutes a major part of their livelihood. The animal is of supreme importance to the Dinka, from a cultural as well as a practical point. The cattle form the basis of Dinka livelihood, religion, and social structure.Their creator god is a divine force, Nhialic. He is the high god and the source of sustenance. The creation of humans is the centerpiece of their origin myth, and Nhialic, also known as Divinity or Supreme Being, rarely bothers itself with the affairs of mankind.The next story is of the Dogon. The Dogon people of Africa live near and around the famous Bandiagara Cliffs in the central plateau region of present-day Mali and Burkina Faso in West Africa. Their creation story is one of the most elaborate and fascinating explanations of the origins of the world and of human culture.The third story is of the Efe. The Efe are people of the Ituri forest region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The tribe, along with the Aka, Sua, and Mbuti, are collectively known as Bambuti, or more commonly, Pygmies. Theirs is a patrilineal culture and the people have flourished predominantly as hunter-gatherers. The Efe, like the other tribes, have lived in the Ituri Forest since as early as twenty-five hundred BC. Interestingly, the Pharoah Nefrikare of Egypt knew of them and called the people "the dancing dwarves" and "people of the trees". Their story is more of an origin of death rather than a fully developed creation myth.The final story is of the Efik.They are inhabitants of the Cross River state of Nigeria and Cameroon. The new Diamond Valley Lake Reservoir near the city of Hemet in Riverside County is billed as the largest earthworks construction project in U.S.history. Construction began in 1995 and involved 31 million cubic meters of foundation excavation and 84 million cubic meters of embankment construction. This set of MISR images captures the most recent phase in the reservoir's activation. At the upper left is a natural-color view acquired by the instrument's vertical-viewing (nadir)camera on March 14, 2000 (Terra orbit 1273), shortly after the Metropolitan Water District began filling the reservoir with water from the Colorado River and Northern California. Water appears darker than the surrounding land. The image at the upper right was acquired nearly one year later on March 1, 2001 (Terra orbit 6399), and shows a clear increase in the reservoir's water content. When full, the lake will hold nearly a trillion liters of water. According to the Metropolitan Water District, the 7 kilometer x 3 kilometer reservoir nearly doubles Southern California's above-groundwater storage capacity. In addition to routine water management, Diamond Valley Lake is designed to provide protection against drought and a six-month emergency supply in the event of earthquake damage to a major aqueduct. In the face of electrical power shortages, it is also expected to reduce dependence on the pumping of water from northern mountains during the high-demand summer months. An unexpected result of site excavation was the uncovering of mastodon and mammoth skeletons along with bones from extinct species not previously thought to have been indigenous to the area, such as the giant long-horned bison and North American lion. A museum and interpretive center is being built to protect these finds. The lower MISR image, from May 20, 2001 (Terra orbit 7564), is a false-color view combining data from the instrument's 26-degree forward view (displayed as blue) with data from the 26-degree backward view(displayed as yellow). This technique enables bodies of water to standout prominently by taking advantage of the strong change in brightness between the two view angles and the contrasting angular signature of the surrounding land. The blue-yellow separation in the cloud field is due to geometric parallax resulting from the clouds' elevation above the surface terrain. Each image covers an area measuring approximately 125 kilometers x 95 kilometers. The northwest to southeast trending linear feature is the Elsinore Fault. MISR was built and is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA, for NASA's Office of Earth Science, Washington, DC. Language policy is crucial to any society's cultural and political fabric, as it shapes how individuals and groups communicate, interact, and identify. Language policy has important implications for nation-building and the creation of national identity. Language policy can also significantly impact university students' sense of belonging. Overt and inclusive policies can provide opportunities for students to develop language skills and cultural competencies, enhancing their academic and professional opportunities. Covert and implicit policies can create barriers to interaction between different language groups, leading to social fragmentation, exclusion, and discrimination. Overt language policies are those that are openly acknowledged and implemented, while covert policies are those that are more subtle and may be hidden. Overt language policies that promote a single national language can unite diverse groups within a nation. However, these policies can also lead to the suppression of linguistic and cultural diversity within a nation, potentially undermining the cultural richness of that society. Covert language policies can also have significant impacts on identity and national unity. For example, language policies not openly acknowledged can lead to confusion or mistrust among different language groups. These policies can reinforce power imbalances between language groups, perpetuating existing inequalities. Considering these concepts, this study aimed to answer the following questions: (1) What LP has been implemented in Kyrgyzstan? (2) How has LP affected university students? Information on the language policy implemented in Kyrgyzstan was necessary to answer the first question, which involved examining laws, banknotes, newspaper titles, and dissertation catalogs. It was necessary to gather data on how the language policy has affected the students to answer the second question. In addition, in-depth interviews with LP experts helped clarify both questions. The collected information was analyzed using textual analysis and statistical methods. Data analysis showed that different models of language policy were implemented in Kyrgyzstan, including multilingualism, bilingualism, and monolingualism. Overt, covert, and vague LP were used to promote these models. These models and methods have formed segregated communities, language discrimination, and different linguistic identities within the same ethnic groups.
