1The Supersymmetry Soft-breaking Lagrangian - Where Experiment And String Theory Meet

After an introduction recalling that we expect low energy supersymmetry to be part of our description of nature because of considerable indirect evidence and successful predictions, and a discussion of the essential role of data for formulating and testing string theory, these lectures focus on the role of the supersymmetry soft-breaking Lagrangian in connecting experiment and string theory. How to measure tan$\beta$ and the soft parameters is examined via a number of applications, and the difficulty of measuring tan$\beta$ at hadron colliders is explained. In each case the important role of soft phases is made explicit, and the true number of parameters is counted. Applications include the chargino and neutralino sectors, the Higgs sector and how its results change when phases are included, measuring the (relative) gluino phase, CP violation in K and B systems and whether all CP violation can be due to soft phases, how to learn if the LSP is the cold dark matter of the universe, and baryogenesis. It is emphasized that the success of supersymmetry in explaining the breaking of electroweak symmetry is probably its most important achievement, and implications of that explanation for superpartner masses are shown. Combining many of these considerations, a further application argues that a lepton collider of total energy 600 GeV with a polarized beam is one we can be confident will do important physics even after LHC. The question of the origins of CP violation, whether the CKM phase can be zero, and the possibility that the soft phases can tell us about compactification and supersymmetry breaking are discussed. Some of the applications and issues are examined in a D-brane based model that can describe the usual collider and dark matter phenomenology, and includes phases and CP violation as well.

2Microscopic Study Of The String Breaking In QCD

Theory of strong decays defines in addition to decay widths, also the channel coupling and the mass shifts of the levels above the decay thresholds. In the standard decay models of the 3P0 type the decay vertex is taken to be a phenomenological constant "gamma" and such a choice leads to large mass shifts of all meson levels due to real and virtual decays, the latter giving a divergent contribution. Here we show that taking the microscopic details of decay vertex into account, one obtains new string width coefficient, which strongly suppresses virtual decay contribution. In addition for a realistic space structure of the decay vertex of highly excited states, the decay matrix elements appear to be strongly different from those, where the constant "gamma" is used. From our analysis also follows that so-called flattening potential can imitate the effects of intermediate decay channels.

3Strong Coupling Model For String Breaking On The Lattice (LATTICE'98)

A model for string breaking on the lattice is formulated using strong coupling ideas. It gives an explicit picture of string breaking, in the presence of dynamical quarks, as a mixing process between a string state and a two-meson state. An analysis of the Wilson loop shows that the evolution of the mixing angle as a function of separation may obscure the expected crossover effect. If a sufficiently extensive mixing region exists then an appropriate combination of transition amplitudes may help reveal the effect. The sensitivity of the mixing region to the values of the meson energy and the dynamical quark mass is explored.

4String Theoretic QCD Axion With Stabilized Saxion And The Pattern Of Supersymmetry Breaking

String theoretic axion is a prime candidate for the QCD axion solving the strong CP problem. For a successful realization of the QCD axion in string theory, one needs to stabilize moduli including the scalar partner (saxion) of the QCD axion, while keeping the QCD axion unfixed until the low energy QCD instanton effects are turned on. We note that a simple generalization of KKLT moduli stabilization provides such set-up realizing the axion solution to the strong CP problem. Although some details of moduli stabilization are different from the original KKLT scenario, this set-up leads to the mirage mediation pattern of soft SUSY breaking terms as in the KKLT case, preserving flavor and CP as a consequence of approximate scaling and axionic shift symmetries. The set-up also gives an interesting pattern of moduli masses which might avoid the cosmological moduli, gravitino and axion problems.

5The Spontaneous Breaking Of A Metastable String

We consider the phase transition of a string with tension $\eps_1$ to a string with a smaller tension $\eps_2$. The transition proceeds through quantum tunneling, and we calculate in arbitrary number of dimensions the pre-exponential factor multiplying the leading semiclassical exponential expression for the rate of the process. At $\eps_2=0$ the found formula for the decay rate also describes a break up of a metastable string into two pieces.

Perturbative heterotic string theory develops a single complex tachyonic mode beyond the Hagedorn temperature. We calculate the quartic effective potential for this tachyonic mode at the critical temperature. Equivalently, we determine the quartic effective potential for strong supersymmetric breaking via anti-perdiodic boundary conditions for fermions on a small circle. We give many details of the heterotic tachyon scattering amplitudes, including a unitarity check to fix all normalization constants. We discuss difficulties in obtaining an effective action valid at all radii. We argue that in certain variables, the quartic term in the potential is radius independent. Speculations on the properties of a new strongly curved phase that could occur after tachyon condensation are offered.

11More On String Breaking In The 3D Abelian Higgs Model: The Photon Propagator

We study the Landau gauge photon propagator in the three--dimensional Abelian Higgs model with compact gauge field and fundamentally charged matter in the London limit. The total gauge field is split into singular and regular parts. On the confinement side of the string breaking crossover the momentum dependence of the total propagator is characterized by an anomalous dimension similarly to 3D compact QED. At the crossover and throughout the Higgs region the anomalous dimension disappears. This result perfectly agrees with recent observations that the monopole--antimonopole plasma leads to nonzero anomalous dimension and the presence of the matter fields causes monopole pairing into dipole bound states. The Yukawa mass characterizing the propagator part from regular gauge fields is non-vanishing at the Higgs side and coincides with the mass found for the total propagator. The regular gauge field without anomalous dimension becomes massless at the crossover and in the confinement region.

12A Family--Universal Anomalous U(1) In String Models As The Origin Of Supersymmetry Breaking And Squark Degeneracy

Recently a promising mechanism for supersymmetry breaking that utilizes both an anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry and an effective mass term m ~ 1TeV of certain relevant fields has been proposed. In this paper we examine whether such a mechanism can emerge in superstring derived free fermionic models. We observe that certain three generation string solutions, though not all, lead to an anomalous U(1) which couples universally to all three families. The advantages of this three-family universality of $U(1)_A$, compared to the two-family case, proposed in earlier works, in yielding squark degeneracy, while avoiding radiative breaking of color and charge, are noted. The root cause of the flavor universality of $U(1)_A$ is the cyclic permutation symmetry that characterizes the $Z_2\times Z_2$ orbifold compactification with standard embedding, realized in the free fermionic models by the NAHE set. It is shown that non--renormalizable terms which contain hidden--sector condensates, generate the required suppression of the relevant mass term $m$, compared to the Planck scale. While the D-term of the family universal $U(1)_A$ leads to squark degeneracy, those of the family dependent U(1)'s, remarkably enough, are found to vanish for the solutions considered, owing to minimization of the potential.

13Cosmological Constraint On The String Dilaton In Gauge-mediated Supersymmetry Breaking Theories

The dilaton field in string theories (if exists) is expected to have a mass of the order of the gravitino mass $m_{3/2}$ which is in a range of $10^{-2}$keV--1GeV in gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking models. If it is the case, the cosmic energy density of coherent dilaton oscillation easily exceeds the critical density of the present universe. We show that even if this problem is solved by a late-time entropy production (thermal inflation) a stringent constraint on the energy density of the dilaton oscillation is derived from experimental upperbounds on the cosmic X($\gamma$)-ray backgrounds. This excludes an interesting mass region, $500keV \lesssim m_{3/2} \lesssim 1GeV$, in gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking models.

14Supersymmetry Breaking And Determination Of The Unification Gauge Coupling Constant In String Theories

We study in a systematic and modular invariant way gaugino condensation in the hidden sector as a potential source of hierarchical supersymmetry breaking and a non--trivial potential for the dilaton $S$ whose real part corresponds to the tree level gauge coupling constant (${\rm Re}\ S\sim g_{gut}^{-2}$). For the case of pure Yang--Mills condensation, we show that no realistic results (in particular no reasonable values for ${\rm Re}\ S$) can emerge, even if the hidden gauge group is not simple. However, in the presence of hidden matter (i.e. the most frequent case) there arises a very interesting class of scenarios with two or more hidden condensing groups for which the dilaton dynamically acquires a reasonable value (${\rm Re}\ S\sim 2$) and supersymmetry is broken at the correct scale ($m_{3/2}\sim 10^3\ GeV$) with no need of fine--tuning. Actually, good values for ${\rm Re}\ S$ and $m_{3/2}$ are correlated. We make an exhaustive classification of the working possibilities. Remarkably, the results are basically independent from the value of $\delta^{GS}$ (the contributions from the Green--Schwarz mechanism). The radius of the compactified space also acquires an expectation value, breaking duality spontaneously.

15Some Universal Properties Of The String Breaking

In gauge systems coupled to matter, the static potential flattens out at a scale where the confining string breaks by formation of a dynamical pair of particles. Surprisingly, such a breaking is invisible in Wilson loops even when the inter-charge separation is much larger than the flattening scale. Observing string breaking also requires using different operators. A known string mechanism provides us with a simple explanation, leading to the area law for large Wilson loops, as observed in most gauge models coupled to whatever kind of matter. It is also pointed out that in a simple 3D Z_2 gauge-Higgs model, once reformulated in terms of Fortuin Kasteleyn clusters, this peculiar behaviour of the Wilson operator can be ascribed to non-trivial linking of a percolating cluster to the Wilson loop. Some numerical tests on this model are also presented.

16Relativistic Scalar Particle Subject To A Confining Potential And Lorentz Symmetry Breaking Effects In The Cosmic String Spacetime

The behaviour of a relativistic scalar particle subject to a scalar potential under the effects of the violation of the Lorentz symmetry in the cosmic string spacetime is discussed. It is considered two possible scenarios of the Lorentz symmetry breaking in the CPT-even gauge sector of the Standard Model Extension defined by a tensor $\left(K_{F}\right)_{\mu\nu\alpha\beta}$. Then, by introducing a scalar potential as a modification of the mass term of the Klein-Gordon equation, it is shown that the Klein-Gordon equation in the cosmic string spacetime is modified by the effects of the Lorentz symmetry violation backgrounds and bound state solution to the Klein-Gordon equation can be obtained.

We apply the pseudoparticle approach to SU(2) Yang-Mills theory and perform a detailed study of the potential between two static charges for various representations. Whereas for charges in the fundamental representation we find a linearly rising confining potential, we clearly observe string breaking, when considering charges in the adjoint representation. We also demonstrate Casimir scaling and compute gluelump masses for different spin and parity. Numerical results are in qualitative agreement with lattice results.

18String Formation And Chiral Symmetry Breaking In The Heavy-light Quark-antiquark System In QCD

The effective quark Lagrangian is written for a light quark in the field of a static antiquark, explicitly containing field correlators as coefficient functions of products of quark operators. At large N_c the closed system of equations for the gauge-invariant quark Green's function in the field of static source is examined analytically. The formation of the string connecting the light quark to the static source is observed numerically. The scalar Lorentz nature of the resulting confinement is shown to hold for the considered case, implying chiral symmetry breaking. The resulting spectrum with and without perturbative gluon exchanges is obtained numerically and compared to the B and D meson masses and HQET.

By starting from the modified Maxwell theory coupled to gravity, the arising of geometric quantum phases in the relativistic and nonrelativistic quantum dynamics of a Dirac neutral particle from the effects of the violation of the Lorentz symmetry in the cosmic string spacetime is investigated. It is shown that the Dirac equation can be written in terms of an effective metric and a relativistic geometric phase stems from the topology of the cosmic string spacetime and the Lorentz symmetry breaking effects. Further, the nonrelativistic limit of the Dirac equation is discussed and it is shown that both Lorentz symmetry breaking effects and the topology of the defect yields a phase shift in the wave function of the nonrelativistic spin-1/2 particle.

Physics in the neighbourhood of a space-time metric singularity is described by a world-sheet topological gauge field theory which can be represented as a twisted $N=2$ superconformal Wess-Zumino model with a $W_{1+\infty} \otimes W_{1+\infty} $ bosonic symmetry. The measurable $W$-hair associated with the singularity is associated with Wilson loop integrals around gauge defects. The breaking of $W_{1+\infty}$ $\otimes $ $W_{1+\infty}$ $\rightarrow $ $W_{1+\infty}$ is associated with expectation values for open Wilson lines that make the metric non-singular away from the singularity. This symmetry breaking is accompanied by massless discrete `tachyon' states that appear as leg poles in $S$-matrix elements. The triviality of the $S$-matrix in the high-energy limit of the $c=1$ string model, after renormalisation by the leg pole factors, is due to the restoration of double $W$-symmetry at the singularity.

26A High Precision Study Of The QQ(bar) Potential From Wilson Loops In The Regime Of String Breaking

For lattice QCD with two sea quark flavours we compute the static quark antiquark potential V(R) in the regime where string breaking is expected. In order to increase statistics, we make full use of the lattice information by including all lattice vectors R to any possible lattice separation in the infrared regime. The corresponding paths between the lattice points are constructed by means of a generalized Bresenham algorithm as known from computer graphics. As a results we achieve a determination of the unquenched potential in the range .8 to 1.5 fm with hitherto unknown precision. Furthermore, we demonstrate some error reducing methods for the evaluation of the transition matrix element between two- and four-quark states.

27The Flipped SU(5) String Vacua Classification: A Variation Of The SO(10) Breaking Basis Vector

In this paper, an extension of the classification of flipped SU(5) heterotic-string vacua from [1] with a variation of the SO(10) breaking $\alpha$ basis vector is presented. A statistical sampling in the space of $2^{45}$ flipped SU(5) vacua is explored, where $10^{11}$ distinct GGSO projection configurations are scanned in comparison to the $10^{12}$ GGSO distinct coefficients scanned in the space of $2^{44}$ vacua in [1]. A JAVA code, akin to the one used for the classification in [1], was implemented to explore these. Results presented here indicate that no three generation exophobic vacua exist, which was also found to be the case in [1] as all odd generations were projected out. This paper will also study the details on the comparison between the two classifications achieved and then reflect on future directions in the quest for finding three generation exophobic flipped SU(5) heterotic-string models.

28String Breaking As A Mixing Phenomenon In The SU(2) Higgs Model

We study the potential of a static quark anti-quark pair in the confinement ``phase'' of the SU(2) Higgs model. Around separation r_b, the confining string of the gauge field breaks by formation of a dynamical pair of light quarks. The ground state and first excited state static potentials are determined by a variational technique from a matrix correlation in which suitably smeared gauge and Higgs fields enter. Our results at beta=2.4 clearly show string breaking (r_b ~ 1.9r_0). The investigation of properly defined overlaps confirms the interpretation of string breaking as a level crossing phenomenon between string-type and meson-type states. We study the scaling properties of the static potentials along a line of constant physics, varying the lattice spacing by a factor of 2. Our results show compatibility with scaling within tiny errors.

29Confinement And String Breaking For QED$_2$ In The Hamiltonian Picture

The formalism of matrix product states is used to perform a numerical study of 1+1 dimensional QED -- also known as the (massive) Schwinger model -- in the presence of an external static `quark' and `antiquark'. We obtain a detailed picture of the transition from the confining state at short interquark distances to the broken-string `hadronized' state at large distances and this for a wide range of couplings, recovering the predicted behavior both in the weak and strong coupling limit of the continuum theory. In addition to the relevant local observables like charge and electric field, we compute the (bipartite) entanglement entropy and show that subtraction of its vacuum value results in a UV-finite quantity. We find that both string formation and string breaking leave a clear imprint on the resulting entropy profile. Finally, we also study the case of fractional probe charges, simulating for the first time the phenomenon of partial string breaking.

We perform a detailed study of the adjoint static potential in the pseudoparticle approach, which is a model for SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. We find agreement with the Casimir scaling hypothesis and there is clear evidence for string breaking. At the same time the potential in the fundamental representation is linear for large separations. Our results are in qualitative agreement with results from lattice computations.

For QCD with dynmical fermions, one needs substantial progress in noise reduction, however, to render such techniques viable.

We investigate the use of stochastically estimated light quark propagators in correlation functions involving a static color source. To this end we compute the static-light meson pseudoscalar correlation function in the stochastic LapH framework, using an ensemble of $N_f= 2+1$ gauge configurations generated through the CLS effort. We extract the static-light as well as the static-strange mass with good statistical precision. Together with the static potential, we obtain a preliminary estimate for the expected mixing region.

It has been suggested that the observed value of the cosmological constant is related to the supersymmetry breaking scale M_{susy} through the formula Lambda \sim M_p^4 (M_{susy}/M_p)^8. We point out that a similar relation naturally arises in the codimension two solutions of warped space-time varying compactifications of string theory in which non-isotropic stringy moduli induce a small but positive cosmological constant.

The roughly linear rise of the potential found between adjoint sources in SU(N) in lattice simulations is expected to saturate into a state of two `gluelumps' due to gluonic screening. We examine this in SU(2) in 2+1 dimensions. Crossover between string-like and broken states is clearly seen by the mixing-matrix technique, using different operators to probe the two states; the breaking behaviour is rather abrupt. Furthermore, we are able to show that both types of operator have a finite overlap with both states; in the case of the Wilson loops the overlap with the broken string is, as predicted, very small.

36String Breaking And Z(2) Local Symmetry In The 3D Georgi-Glashow Model

In this work, we consider the London limit of the (2+1)D Georgi-Glashow model with dynamical quarks. Following Polyakov's monopole plasma approach and using dual methods to treat the relevant matter sector, we derive in a clear and straightforward manner the recently proposed gauging of the discrete Z(N) symmetry of the associated effective vortex theory. Our procedure applies to bosonic as well as to fermionic matter, enabling to derive a useful representation for the Wilson loop and discuss string breaking, due to the creation of dynamical quark-antiquark pairs. This phenomenon corresponds to a perimeter law, a behavior that has been already observed in the lattice.

We propose that a modified version of string-inspired supersymmetry breaking schemes in \cite{wit2} and \cite{ross} may make affine level one SU(5) and SO(10) string models with intermediate gauge symmetry breaking scale $M_{GUT}=10^{16}GeV$ possible; doublet-triplet problem can also be solved. In particular, we propose that some charged gauge background VEVs might be turned on when gaugino condensation happens in the hidden sector and would break gauge symmetry. One can dynamically determine gaugino condensation scale, local supersymmetry breaking scale and intermediate gauge symmetry breaking scale $M_{GUT}$ in terms of dilaton VEV. With dilaton VEV, $\langle S \rangle \sim 2$, and $E_6$ hidden sector gaugino condensation, we can obtain $M_{GUT}=10^{16}GeV$. We also discuss how to generate the mass hierarchy within the framework of this supersymmetry breaking scheme. We show that the large mass hierarchy restricts string models to those that have a no-scale structure and in which the gauge coupling function does not receive string threshold corrections.

39Dilaton Stabilization And Supersymmetry Breaking By Dynamical Gaugino Condensation In The Linear Multiplet Formalism Of String Effective Theory

We study dynamical gaugino condensation in superstring effective theories using the linear multiplet representation for the dilaton superfield. An interesting necessary condition for the dilaton to be stabilized, which was first derived in generic models of static gaugino condensation, is shown to hold for generic models of dynamical gaugino condensation. We also point out that it is stringy non-perturbative effects that stabilize the dilaton and allow dynamical supersymmetry breaking via the field-theoretical non-perturbative effect of gaugino condensation. As a typical example, a toy S-dual model of a dynamical E_8 condensate is constructed and the dilaton is explicitly shown to be stabilized with broken supersymmetry and (fine-tuned) vanishing cosmological constant.

40The Confining String And Its Breaking In QCD

We point out that the world sheet swept by the confining string in presence of dynamical quarks can belong to two different phases, depending on the number of charge species and the quark masses. When it lies in the normal phase (as opposed to the tearing one) the string breaking is invisible in the Wilson loop, while is manifest in operators composed of disjoint sources, as observed in many numerical experiments. We work out an explicit formula for the correlator of Polyakov loops at finite temperature, which is then compared with recent lattice data, both in the quenched case and in presence of dynamical quarks. The analysis in the quenched case shows that the free bosonic string model describes accurately the data for distances larger than ~ 0.75 fm. In the unquenched case we derive predictions on the dependence of the static potential on the temperature which are compatible with the lattice data.

We study the breaking of the string spanned between test charges in the three dimensional Abelian Higgs model with compact gauge field and fundamentally charged Higgs field at zero temperature. In agreement with current expectations we demonstrate that string breaking is associated with pairing of monopoles. However, the string breaking is not accompanied by an ordinary phase transition.

A model for SU(n) string breaking on the lattice is formulated using strong coupling ideas. Although necessarily rather crude, the model gives an explicit picture of string breaking in the presence of dynamical quarks as a mixing phenomenon that involves the string state and a two-meson state. A careful analysis, within the model, of the Wilson loop shows that the evolution of the mixing angle as a function of separation may obscure the expected crossover effect. If a sufficiently extensive mixing region exists then an appropriate combination of transition amplitudes can help in revealing the effect. The sensitivity of the mixing region to the values of the meson energy and the dynamical quark mass is explored and an assessment made of the dectectibility of string breaking in a practical lattice simulation.

44Deducing The String-breaking Distance In Strong Production Processes

We show that the string-breaking distance can be read from meson-production data, by employing a previously derived expression for the production amplitude. Accordingly, we find that the radii of 0.67, 0.34 and 0.20 fm for the creation of non-strange q-qbar pairs obtained in the Resonance-Spectrum-Expansion model, for light-quark, c-cbar, and b-bbar environments, respectively, are in perfect agreement with S-wave di-pion production data, upon employing an ansatz with no additional free parameters.
