'The Bhagavad Gita Or The Sing Divine Gorakhpur 1959 - Gita Press'

This paper uses narrative criticism to analyze the ancient Indian religious poem, the "Bhagavad Gita." This important text, the second most widely translated piece of literature in the world, will receive much-deserved rhetorical attention to its narrative and how this helps construct issues of the self, the world, action, and ontology. Issues of narrative probability and fidelity will be discussed, focusing on the challenges a cross-cultural and temporally-distant artifact provides to the modern critic. (Contains 43 references.) Religious narratives can and do cross borders through communicative practices and arenas that span cultures. The ideas and conceptual tools enshrined in another culture's stories can be appropriated in one of two ways by another culture--either through using such a text to denigrate the originator culture or to adapt the ideas within to the new culture's ideological superstructure. It is this latter version of cultural appropriation that can be seen at work in the novel and film adaptations of the "Bhagavad Gita," both entitled "The Legend of Bagger Vance." What is interesting are the changes that occur to this very philosophical and religious narrative, the "Bhagavad Gita," in the hands of western publishing and film systems. This paper argues that as the narrative translation of the "Bhagavad Gita" gets deeper into western media systems, the narrative of the book and film increasingly becomes bereft of monistic, eastern "content" and is instead replaced by "western" notions of God and individual projects/goals. To substantiate this claim of increasing westernization of the narrative in important philosophical and religious ways, the paper first examines some grounding theory in narrative research and then focuses on each text--the "Bhagavad Gita"; the "Legend of Bagger Vance," the novel; and the "Legend of Bagger Vance," the film. The "Bhagavad Gita" is a didactic dialogue inserted approximately in the middle of an immensely long Indian epic entitled the "Mahabharata." This paper examines the use of narrative in this ancient Hindu religious work, the "Bhagavad Gita"--specific attention is given to how the story in this didactic text uses dialogic events between the two main characters to establish a complicated and seemingly contradictory stance on ethical behavior, unethical behavior, war, etc. Noting that the complicated lineage of events in this work establishes a foundation from which criticism can proceed, the paper shows that the evaluative qualities of narrative "probability" and "fidelity" (as discussed by Fisher, 1987) are not clearly discernible in the text; the western audience can construct differing arguments from this text, as well as receive differing impressions of its coherence and logic. The paper states that, as a result of this analysis, the "Bhagavad Gita" can be considered to advance the narrative paradigm in that it provides a prime example of a "multivalent narrative" from the eastern world. It finds that this text is very deserving of study and that this inquiry has been a step toward constructing some theoretical insights into the practice of Indian rhetoric and narrative practice. The Gita Society of Belgium publishes here the Bhagavad Gita entirely in Sanskrit for students, and for the many Indian friends on my Facebook. Translations give only the sense of the Sacred Book, while the original text is the Word of God we are reading about. It is divine revelation. We are also preparing a Sanskrit Grammar for self-help in the study of the Gita. The Bhagavad Gita is the greatest and one of the noblest Sacred Scriptures of India, and one of the best read Scriptures of the world. The twenty-first century is an era where the decline of religions is everywhere present, but the Bhagavad Gita remains a world-wide read book. It is rich in poetry and full of spirituality, and therefore it is a book of power. People will not only buy it, but also read it. The Gitaâs teaching of inspiration, of intuition, of faith, is the inspiring spirit of the Upanishads, to which the name Vedanta, the End of the Veda, was at the appropriate time given. Finally, in our relation with the Supreme, we must put away the thought of personal pain. We must with clear intuition perceive the task set us by the Divine Life, and with high valour perform it, leaving all further matters out of sight. The heartâs devotion must be laid on the altar, and from that pure offering a knowledge of the life presented in the Bhagavad Gita will arise. This is the Supreme Lord Krishnaâs doctrine of disinterestedness, of detachment, to which he comes back again and again. By following it we shall gradually untie the knot in our minds, and the hard and dense psychic nature will become purified and transparent, so that some of the divine light may come down in heart and mind, hearing as such the voice of immortality. The Bhagavad Gita is the great doctrine handed from Master to the yogi, the devotee and men and women of good-will.
