The nonlinear photon-photon interaction mediated by a single two-level atom is studied theoretically based on a one-dimensional model of the field-atom interaction. This model allows us to determine the effects of an atomic nonlinearity on the spatiotemporal coherence of a two photon state. Specifically, the complete two photon output wave function can be obtained for any two photon input wave function. It is shown that the quantum interference between the components of the output state associated with different interaction processes causes bunching and anti-bunching in the two photon statistics. This theory may be useful for various applications in photon manipulation, e.g. quantum information processing using photonic qubits, quantum nondemolition measurements, and the generation of entangled photons.

A Dirac particle in general dimensions moving in a 1/r potential is shown to have an exact N = 2 supersymmetry, for which the two supercharge operators are obtained in terms of (a D-dimensional generalization of) the Johnson-Lippmann operator, an extension of the Runge-Lenz-Pauli vector that relativistically incorporates spin degrees of freedom. So the extra symmetry (S(2))in the quantum Kepler problem, which determines the degeneracy of the levels, is so robust as to accommodate the relativistic case in arbitrary dimensions.

We study the dynamics of the reduced density matrix(RDM) of the field in the micromaser. The resonator is pumped by N-atomic clusters of two-level atoms. At each given instant there is only one cluster in the cavity. We find the conditions of the independent evolution of the matrix elements of RDM belonging to a (sub)diagonal of the RDM, i.e. conditions of the diagonal invariance for the case of pumping by N-atomic clusters. We analyze the spectrum of the evolution operator of the RDM and discover the existence of the quasitrapped states of the field mode. These states exist for a wide range of number of atoms in the cluster as well as for a broad range of relaxation rates. We discuss the hierarchy of dynamical processes in the micromaser and find an important property of the field states corresponding to the quasi-equilibrium: these states are close to either Fock states or to a superposition of the Fock states. A possibility to tune the distribution function of photon numbers is discussed.

We present experimental measurements of the mean energy in the vicinity of the first and second quantum resonances of the atom optics kicked rotor for a number of different experimental parameters. Our data is rescaled and compared with the one parameter epsilon--classical scaling function developed to describe the quantum resonance peaks. Additionally, experimental data is presented for the ``classical'' resonance which occurs in the limit as the kicking period goes to zero. This resonance is found to be analogous to the quantum resonances, and a similar one-parameter classical scaling function is derived, and found to match our experimental results. The width of the quantum and classical resonance peaks is compared, and their Sub-Fourier nature examined.

We studied the properties of a single impurity atom immersed in a dilute Bose condensate at low temperatures. In particular, we perturbatively obtained the momentum dependence of the impurity spectrum and damping. By means of the Brillouin-Wigner perturbation theory we also calculated the self-energy both for attractive and repulsive polaron in the long-wavelength limit. The stability problem of the impurity atom in a weakly-interacting Bose gas is also examined.

We present an investigation on the resonances of a doubly excited helium atom in a strong magnetic field covering the regime B = 0-100 a.u. A full-interaction approach which is based on an anisotropic Gaussian basis set of one-particle functions being nonlinearly optimized for each field strength is employed. Accurate results for a total of 17 resonances below the threshold of consisting of He+ in the N=2 state are reported in this work. This includes states with total magnetic quantum numbers M=0,-1,-2 and even z-parity. The corresponding binding energies are compared to approximate energies of two-particle configurations consisting of two hydrogen-like electrons in the strong field regime, thereby providing an understanding of the behavior of the energies of the resonances with varying field strength.

This is presented the justification of the expression for the atom interferometer phase in the presence of proof mass used in arXiv:1407.7287. Quantum corrections to that expression are also derived. The corrections allow one to calculate numerically atom interferometer phase with accuracy 1ppm or better.

We study quantum non-Markovianity in the early stage of the emission process of a two-level atom coupled to a semi-infinite waveguide, where the waveguide termination behaves as a perfect mirror. Specifically, we restrict to the analysis of the process for times shorter than twice the time delay t_d, where t_d is the duration of a round trip along the atom-mirror path. We show the emergence of a threshold in the parameters space separating the Markovian and non-Markovian regions.

We propose and develop the complex scaled multiconfigurational spin-tensor electron propagator (CMCSTEP) technique for theoretical determination of resonance parameters with electron-atom/molecule systems including open-shell and highly correlated atoms and molecules. The multiconfigurational spin-tensor electron propagator method (MCSTEP) developed and implemented by Yeager his coworkers in real space gives very accurate and reliable ionization potentials and attachment energies. The CMCSTEP method uses a complex scaled multiconfigurational self-consistent field (CMCSCF) state as an initial state along with a dilated Hamiltonian where all of the electronic coordinates are scaled by a complex factor. CMCSCF was developed and applied successfully to resonance problems earlier. We apply the CMCSTEP method to get $^2 P\,\mbox{Be}^{-}$ shape resonance parameters using $14s11p5d$, $14s14p2d$, and $14s14p5d$ basis sets with a $2s2p3d$\,CAS. The obtained value of the resonance parameters are compared to previous results. This is the first time CMCSTEP has been developed and used for a resonance problem. It will be among the most accurate and reliable techniques. Vertical ionization potentials and attachment energies in real space are typically within $\pm 0.2\,eV$ or better of excellent experiments and full configuration interaction calculations with a good basis set. We expect the same sort of agreement in complex space.

The gravitational field of a laser pulse, although not detectable at the moment, comes with a peculiar feature which continues to attract attention; cause and effect propagate with the same speed, that of light. A particular result of this feature is that the gravitational field of an emitted laser pulse and the gravitational effect of the emitter's energy-momentum change are intimately entangled. In this article, a specific example of an emission process is considered - an atom, modeled as a point mass, emits two counter-propagating pulses. The corresponding curvature and the effect on massive and massless test particles is discussed. A comparison is made with the metric corresponding to a spherically symmetric massive object that isotropically emits radiation - the Vaidya metric.

We present an analysis of the dynamics of the equifacial pentahedron on the Kapovich-Millson phase space under a volume preserving Hamiltonian. The classical dynamics of polyhedra under such a Hamiltonian may arise from the classical limit of the node volume operators in loop quantum gravity. The pentahedron is the simplest nontrivial polyhedron for which the dynamics may be chaotic. We consider the distribution of polyhedral configurations throughout the space and find indications that the borders between certain configurations act as separatrices. We examine the local stability of trajectories within this phase space and find that locally unstable regions dominate although extended stable regions are present. Canonical and microcanonical estimates of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy suggest that the pentahedron is a strongly chaotic system. The presence of chaos is further suggested by calculations of intermediate time Lyapunov exponents which saturate to non zero values.

This work concerns the development of a high resolution imaging atom-probe time-of-flight mass spectrometer, its performance, and its application to electro- and electroless nickel, nickel-phosphorus platings, and to hydrogen adsorbed on rhodium. An imaging atom-probe displays the distribution over a sample's surface of a constituent mass species selected from the sample's time-of-flight spectra. Imaging of the sample surface is at atomic resolution by field-ion, desorption, and gated desorption microscopy. The mass resolution of this 13.5-cm flight-path instrument was significantly increased by minimizing dispersion in the initial energy of field evaporated ions while improving timing and gating electronics. A preliminary application to the chemistry of hydrogen adsorbed on metallic solids displayed crystallographically and atomically specific variations in the distribution of adsorbed hydrogen over an undisturbed rhodium surface in an applied electric field. The principal application is the atomic level metallurgical analysis of stripped Ni and Ni-P electro- and electroless deposited plates. The mass spectra of as-deposited Ni electroplate show it to be 99+% pure, while field-ion micrographs show boundaries of atomic width between impinging crystals. Micrographs, after annealing, show an ordered overlayer rich in phosphorus indicating the segregation of phosphorus to the surface during the transformation to Ni3P-Ni. The underlying structure is a mixture of ordered phases, Ni3P and Ni, with boundaries that coincide with those present in Ni-P prior to the anneal. The existence and coincidence of the boundaries indicate Ni-P is not totally amorphous, in the sense of a liquid, as was previously thought.

For that, the charge densities, together with the corresponding muonic transition energies, calculated by the covariant density functional theory are used as a benchmark. The root-mean-square deviation of transition energies is calculated to quantitatively investigate the sensitivities of transition energies to the details of the two-parameter Fermi distribution.
