The average-atom model is applied to study Thomson scattering of x-rays from warm-dense matter with emphasis on scattering by bound electrons. Parameters needed to evaluate the dynamic structure function (chemical potential, average ionic charge, free electron density, bound and continuum wave-functions and occupation numbers) are obtained from the average-atom model. The resulting analysis provides a relatively simple diagnostic for use in connection with x-ray scattering measurements. Applications are given to dense hydrogen, beryllium, aluminum and titanium plasmas. In the case of titanium, bound states are predicted to modify the spectrum significantly.

We calculate the ground--state energy and other physical properties of the hydrogen atom inside a spherical box with an impenetrable wall. We apply the variational method and perturbation theory and compare both approximate results. We show that the total, kinetic and potential energies for the moving--nucleus model are greater than those for the case in which the nucleus is clamped at the box center.

Fix a finite ordinal n>2. We show that there exists an atomic, simple and countable representable CA_n, such that its minimal completion is outside SNr_nCA_{n+3}. Hence, for any finite k\geq 3, the variety SNr_nCA_{n+k} is not atom-canonical, so that the variety of CA_n's having n+k-flat representations is not atom-canonical, too. We show, for finite k\geq 3, that S_cNr_nCA_{n+k} is not elementary, hence the class of CA_n's having complete n+3-smooth representations is not elementary. We obtain analogous results by replacing flat and smooth, respectively, by (the weaker notion of) square; this give a stronger result in both cases and here we can allow k to be infinite. Our results are proved using rainbow constructions for CA's. We lift the negative result on atom-canonicity to the transfinite. We also show that for any ordinal \alpha\geq \omega, for any finite k\geq 1, and for any r\in \omega, there exists an atomic algebra A_r\in SNr_\alphaCA_{\alpha+k}\sim SNr_nCA_{\alpha+k+1}, such that \Pi_{r/U} A_r\in RCA_{\alpha} where U is any non--principal ultrafilter on \omega. Reaping the harvest of our algebraic results we investigate a plethora of omitting types theorems for variants of first logic including its finite variable fragments and its packed fragment.

We study quantum non-Markovianity in the early stage of the emission process of a two-level atom coupled to a semi-infinite waveguide, where the waveguide termination behaves as a perfect mirror. Specifically, we restrict to the analysis of the process for times shorter than twice the time delay t_d, where t_d is the duration of a round trip along the atom-mirror path. We show the emergence of a threshold in the parameters space separating the Markovian and non-Markovian regions.

We propose and develop the complex scaled multiconfigurational spin-tensor electron propagator (CMCSTEP) technique for theoretical determination of resonance parameters with electron-atom/molecule systems including open-shell and highly correlated atoms and molecules. The multiconfigurational spin-tensor electron propagator method (MCSTEP) developed and implemented by Yeager his coworkers in real space gives very accurate and reliable ionization potentials and attachment energies. The CMCSTEP method uses a complex scaled multiconfigurational self-consistent field (CMCSCF) state as an initial state along with a dilated Hamiltonian where all of the electronic coordinates are scaled by a complex factor. CMCSCF was developed and applied successfully to resonance problems earlier. We apply the CMCSTEP method to get $^2 P\,\mbox{Be}^{-}$ shape resonance parameters using $14s11p5d$, $14s14p2d$, and $14s14p5d$ basis sets with a $2s2p3d$\,CAS. The obtained value of the resonance parameters are compared to previous results. This is the first time CMCSTEP has been developed and used for a resonance problem. It will be among the most accurate and reliable techniques. Vertical ionization potentials and attachment energies in real space are typically within $\pm 0.2\,eV$ or better of excellent experiments and full configuration interaction calculations with a good basis set. We expect the same sort of agreement in complex space.

The gravitational field of a laser pulse, although not detectable at the moment, comes with a peculiar feature which continues to attract attention; cause and effect propagate with the same speed, that of light. A particular result of this feature is that the gravitational field of an emitted laser pulse and the gravitational effect of the emitter's energy-momentum change are intimately entangled. In this article, a specific example of an emission process is considered - an atom, modeled as a point mass, emits two counter-propagating pulses. The corresponding curvature and the effect on massive and massless test particles is discussed. A comparison is made with the metric corresponding to a spherically symmetric massive object that isotropically emits radiation - the Vaidya metric.

We present an analysis of the dynamics of the equifacial pentahedron on the Kapovich-Millson phase space under a volume preserving Hamiltonian. The classical dynamics of polyhedra under such a Hamiltonian may arise from the classical limit of the node volume operators in loop quantum gravity. The pentahedron is the simplest nontrivial polyhedron for which the dynamics may be chaotic. We consider the distribution of polyhedral configurations throughout the space and find indications that the borders between certain configurations act as separatrices. We examine the local stability of trajectories within this phase space and find that locally unstable regions dominate although extended stable regions are present. Canonical and microcanonical estimates of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy suggest that the pentahedron is a strongly chaotic system. The presence of chaos is further suggested by calculations of intermediate time Lyapunov exponents which saturate to non zero values.

Produced in the late 1960s or early 1970s before the Three Mile Island accident changed the American public's opinion about nuclear energy, "The Magic of the Atom: The Atom and the Environment" describes nuclear power and atomic research, and its impact on the environment, in highly positive terms.  As the narrator states: "The fight for the preservation of the earth's environment goes on, and one very valuable weapon in that fight is the magic of the atom." Various careers in nuclear energy and nuclear engineering, while showing how atomic power represents a form of "clean energy" that is much safer for the environment than coal and oil-burning power plants.  Nuclear research is also shown, for example Dr. T. Roy Fukuto's work creating insecticides at U.C. Riverside, work performed to identify the source of oil slicks using neutron activation analysis, work with radioactive cesium at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and tests using radioactive sand at Pt. Mugu, California to determine rates of beach erosion.  The film concludes with a discussion of the future of nuclear energy and atomic bombs -- which can be used in constructing underground chambers for storage purposes.
