1Quantum Multiplexing With The Orbital Angular Momentum Of Light
By Juan Carlos Garcia-Escartin and Pedro Chamorro-Posada
The orbital angular momentum, OAM, of photons offers a suitable support to carry the quantum data of multiple users. We present two novel optical setups that send the information of n quantum communication parties through the same free-space optical link. Those qubits can be sent simultaneously and share path, wavelength and polarization without interference, increasing the communication capacity of the system. The first solution, a qubit combiner, merges n channels into the same link, which transmits n independent photons. The second solution, the OAM multiplexer, uses CNOT gates to transfer the information of n optical channels to a single photon. Additional applications of the multiplexer circuits, such as quantum arithmetic, as well as connections to OAM sorting are discussed.

2Liquid Crystal Spatial-mode Converters For The Orbital Angular Momentum Of Light
By Sergei Slussarenko, Bruno Piccirillo, Vladimir Chigrinov, Lorenzo Marrucci and Enrico Santamato
We present a tunable liquid crystal device that converts pure orbital angular momentum eigenmodes of a light beam into equal-weight superpositions of opposite-handed eigenmodes and vice versa. For specific input states, the device may thus simulate the behavior of a {\pi}/2 phase retarder in a given two-dimensional orbital angular momentum subspace, analogous to a quarter-wave plate for optical polarization. A variant of the same device generates the same final modes starting from a Gaussian input.

3Superconducting Qubit Without Josephson Junctions Manipulated By The Orbital Angular Momentum Of Light
By Sang Jae Yun
Conventional superconducting qubits have used Josephson junctions as an essential part to provide anharmonicity for well-separated energy-level spacings. However, because a superconducting ring without Josephson junctions has intrinsically well-separated energy-level spacings, Josephson junctions are not necessary as long as one can achieve single-qubit operations. We show that the orbital angular momentum of light can be adopted as a qubit-control means and can eliminate the need for Josephson junctions. The feasibility study reveals that the proposed qubit has many advantages over the previous ones. The lifetime of the qubit is extended due to the lack of the junction resistance. Very fast (sub-nanosecond) qubit manipulation in both single- and two-qubit gate is achieved. Without Josephson junctions, the fabrication process is simple and the deviations in the characteristics of each qubit can be improved.

4Can Sea Quark Asymmetry Shed Light On The Orbital Angular Momentum Of The Proton?
By Emanuele R. Nocera and Elena Santopinto
A striking prediction of several extensions of the constituent quark model, including the unquenched quark model, the pion cloud model and the chiral quark model, is a proportionality relationship between the quark sea asymmetry and the orbital angular momentum of the proton. We investigate to which extent a relationship of this kind is corroborated by the experiment, through a systematic comparison between expectations based on models and predictions obtained from a global analysis of hard-scattering data in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. We find that the data allows the angular momentum of the proton to be proportional to its sea asymmetry, though with a rather large range of the optimal values of the proportionality coefficient. Typical values do not enable us to discriminate among expectations based on different models. In order to make our comparison conclusive, the extrapolation uncertainties on the proportionality coefficient should be reduced, hopefully by means of accurate measurements in the region of small proton momentum fractions, where the data is currently lacking. Nevertheless, the unquenched quark model predicts that quarks account for a proton spin fraction much larger than that accepted by the conventional wisdom. We explicitly demonstrate that such a discrepancy can be reabsorbed in the unknown extrapolation region, without affecting the description of current data, by imposing the unquenched quark model expectation as a boundary condition in the analysis of the data itself. We delineate how the experimental programs at current and future facilities may shed light on the region of small momentum fractions.

52D Shift Of The Centre Of Gravity Of The Light Beam Carrying Orbital Angular Momentum, Which Accompanies Reflection From A Lossy Medium
By V. G. Fedoseyev
It is shown that after reflection from a lossy medium the $s$- or $p$-polarized paraxial light beam carrying the orbital angular momentum suffers the 2D shift of the beam's centre of gravity relative the geometric optic axis. The mutually orthogonal components of this shift are expressed through the real and imaginary parts of the common complex quantity. The features of the 2D vector, which describes the shift, are analyzed.

6Reading The Orbital Angular Momentum Of Light Using Plasmonic Nanoantennas
By R. M. Kerber, J. M. Fitzgerald, D. E. Reiter, S. S. Oh and O. Hess
Orbital angular momentum of light has recently been recognized as a new degree of freedom to encode information in quantum communication using light pulses. Methods to extract this information include reversing the process by which such twisted light was created in the first place or interference with other beams. Here, we propose an alternative new way to directly read out the extra information encoded in twisted light using plasmonic nanoantennas by con- verting the information about the orbital angular momentum of light into spectral information using bright and dark modes. Exemplarily considering rotation-symmetrical nanorod nanoan- tennas we show that their scattering cross-section is sensitive to the value of the orbital angular momentum combined with the polarisation of an incident twisted light beam. Explaining the twist-dependence of the excited modes with a new analytical model our results pave the way to twisted light nanoplasmonics, which is of central importance for future on-chip communication using orbital angular momentum of light.

7Topological Defects, Geometric Phases, And The Angular Momentum Of Light
By S C Tiwari
Recent reports on the intriguing features of vector vortex bearing beams are analyzed using geometric phases in optics. It is argued that the spin redirection phase induced circular birefringence is the origin of topological phase singularities arising in the inhomogeneous polarization patterns. A unified picture of recent results is presented based on this proposition. Angular momentum shift within the light beam (OAM) has exact equivalence with the angular momentum holonomy associated with the geometric phase consistent with our conjecture.

8Comment On "Higher Order Pancharatnam-Berry Phase And The Angular Momentum Of Light"
By Masato Suzuki, Keisaku Yamane, Kazuhiko Oka, Yasunori Toda and Ryuji Morita
In a recent letter, Milione et al. reported the Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PBP) on a higher-order Poincar\'e sphere (HOPS) [Phys. Rev. Lett, 108, 190401 (2012)]. They used two spin-orbit converters (SOCs) to make a trajectory along the HOPS. However, the SOCs actually do not make a path on the HOPS. We briefly discuss a way of acquiring a PBP made by SOCs.

9Circular Dichroism Of Cholesteric Polymers And The Orbital Angular Momentum Of Light
By W. Löffler, D. J. Broer and J. P. Woerdman
We explore experimentally if the light's orbital angular momentum (OAM) interacts with chiral nematic polymer films. Specifically, we measure the circular dichroism of such a material using light beams with different OAM. We investigate the case of strongly focussed, non-paraxial light beams, where the spatial and polarization degrees of freedom are coupled. Within the experimental accuracy, we cannot find any influence of the OAM on the circular dichroism of the cholesteric polymer.

12Insensitivity Of Spin Dynamics To The Orbital Angular Momentum Transferred From Twisted Light To Extended Semiconductors
By M. Cygorek, P. I. Tamborenea and V. M. Axt
We study the spin dynamics of carriers due to the Rashba interaction in semiconductor quantum disks and wells after excitation with light with orbital angular momentum. We find that although twisted light transfers orbital angular momentum to the excited carriers and the Rashba interaction conserves their total angular momentum, the resulting electronic spin dynamics is essentially the same for excitation with light with orbital angular momentum $l=+|l|$ and $l=-|l|$. The differences between cases with different values of $|l|$ are due to the excitation of states with slightly different energies and not to the different angular momenta per se, and vanish for samples with large radii where a $k$-space quasi-continuum limit can be established. These findings apply not only to the Rashba interaction but also to all other envelope-function approximation spin-orbit Hamiltonians like the Dresselhaus coupling.

14Unexpected Equality Of The Quark And Gluon Belinfante Angular Momentum And Canonical Angular Momentum In The Light-cone Gauge $A^+=0$, In A Spin 1/2 Nucleon
By Elliot Leader
A controversy is raging concerning the most physically meaningful definition of quark and gluon angular momentum, a question of importance in understanding the internal structure of the nucleon. There are, in my, opinion, two principal candidates: the Belinfante version, $\bm{J}_{bel}$, which is gauge invariant, and the Canonical version, $ \bm{J}_{can}$, which is non-gauge invariant, but which has a physically intuitive structure. I demonstrate the wholly unexpected result that for quarks in a spin 1/2 nucleon the expectation value of $\bm{J}_{bel}(\textrm{quark})$ is equal to the expectation value of $ \bm{J}_{can}(\textrm{quark})$ taken in the light-cone gauge $A^+=0$, with an analogous result for gluons.

15Theory Of The Optical Absorption Of Light Carrying Orbital Angular Momentum By Semiconductors
By G. F. Quinteiro and P. I. Tamborenea
We develop a free-carrier theory of the optical absorption of light carrying orbital angular momentum (twisted light) by bulk semiconductors. We obtain the optical transition matrix elements for Bessel-mode twisted light and use them to calculate the wave function of photo-excited electrons to first-order in the vector potential of the laser. The associated net electric currents of first and second-order on the field are obtained. It is shown that the magnetic field produced at the center of the beam for the $\ell=1$ mode is of the order of a millitesla, and could therefore be detected experimentally using, for example, the technique of time-resolved Faraday rotation.

16Nematic Director Slippage: Role Of The Angular Momentum Of Light
By D. Andrienko, V. Reshetnyak, Yu. Reznikov and T. J. Sluckin
We propose a theoretical model of the light-induced director slippage effect. In this effect the bulk director reorientation contributes to the surface director reorientation It is found that the director and ellipticity profiles, obtained in the geometric optics approximation, are dependent on the ellipticity of the incident light wave. The director distribution is spatially modulated in linearly polarized light but grows monotonically in circularly polarized light. The surface director deviation has been examined, and comparison made with existing experimental data, which then permits the magnitude of the orientational nonlinearity coefficient to be calculated.

17Management Of The Angular Momentum Of Light: Preparation Of Photons In Multidimensional Vector States Of Angular
By Gabriel Molina-Terriza, Juan P. Torres and Lluis Torner
We put forward schemes to prepare photons in multi-dimensional vector states of orbital angular momentum. We show realizable light distributions that yield prescribed states with finite or infinite normal modes. In particular, we show that suitable light vortex-pancakes allow the add-drop of specific vector projections. We suggest that such photons might allow the generation of it engineered quNits in multi-dimensional quantum information systems.

18Nature Of The Angular Momentum Of Light: Rotational Energy And Geometric Phase
By S. C. Tiwari
The nature of intrinsic/extrinsic character of angular momentum is defined in terms of the kind of the associated rotational energy of the light. The salient features of the spin energy of light and photon are highlighted. Spin angular momentum is intrinsic while orbital angular momentum possesses quasi-intrinsicness only if the vortex-like singularities are present. The claimed spin to orbital angular momentum conversion is interpreted in terms of spin redirection geometric phase. It is pointed out that this interpretation validates our angular momentum holonomy conjecture.

19The Role Of Spatial Coherence And Orbital Angular Momentum Of Light In Astronomy
By D. Hetharia, M. P. van Exter and W. Löffler
The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light is potentially interesting for astronomical study of rotating objects such as black holes, but the effect of reduced spatial coherence of astronomical light sources such as stars is largely unknown. In a lab-scale experiment, we find that the detected OAM spectrum depends strongly on the position of the light-twisting object along the line of sight. We develop a simple intuitive model to predict the influence of reduced spatial coherence in astronomical observations, and discuss line-of-sight and intensity issues.

20Hubble And Planck Scale Limits On The Determination Of Orbital Angular Momentum States Of Light
By F. Tamburini, B. Thidé and A. Sponselli
We review Heisenberg's uncertainty principle for the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light. By taking into account the largest and smallest scales present in nature, such as the the Hubble radius and the Planck length, we have found that there exist upper and lower physical limits to the determination of the OAM of a photon.

22Identifying The Orbital Angular Momentum Of Light Based On Atomic Ensembles
By Liang Han, Mingtao Cao, Ruifeng Liu, Hao Liu, Wenge Guo, Dong Wei, Shaoyan Gao, Pei Zhang and Hong Gao
We propose a scheme to distinguish the orbital angular momentum state of the Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beam based on the electromagnetically induced transparency modulated by a microwave field in atomic ensembles. We show that the transverse phase variation of a probe beam with the LG mode can be mapped into the spatial intensity distribution due to the change of atomic coherence caused by the microwave. The proposal may provide a useful tool for studying higher-dimensional quantum information based on atomic ensembles.

23Quantum Computer Networks With The Orbital Angular Momentum Of Light
By Juan Carlos Garcia-Escartin and Pedro Chamorro-Posada
Inside computer networks, different information processing tasks are necessary to deliver the user data efficiently. This processing can also be done in the quantum domain. We present simple optical quantum networks where the orbital angular momentum of a single photon is used as an ancillary degree of freedom which controls decisions at the network level. Linear optical elements are enough to provide important network primitives like multiplexing and routing. First we show how to build a simple multiplexer and demultiplexer which combine photonic qubits and separate them again at the receiver. We also give two different self-routing networks where the OAM of an input photon is enough to make it find its desired destination.

24Comment On Half-integer Quantum Numbers For The Total Angular Momentum Of Photons In Light Beams With Finite Lateral Extensions
By Manfred Fähnle
Recently the spectacular result was derived quantum mechanically that the total angular momentum of photons in light beams with finite lateral extensions can have half-integer quantum numbers. In a circularly polarized Gauss light beam it is half of the spin angular momentum which it would have in a respective infinitely extended wave. In another paper it was shown by a classical calculation that the magnetic moment induced by such a beam in a metal is a factor of two smaller than the one induced by a respective infinitely extended wave. Since the system's angular momentum is proportional to its magnetic moment it could be assumed that the classical result for the magnetic moment reflects the transfer of the total angular momenta of the beam photons to the metal. Here we show that there is no hint that this is indeed the case.

25Complete Characterisation Of The Azimuthal And Radial Indices Of Light Fields Carrying Orbital Angular Momentum
By Michael Mazilu, Areti Mourka, Tom Vettenburg and Kishan Dholakia
The direct determination of the complete transversal state of an electromagnetic field and accompanying mode indices is essential for the proper quantification of all light-matter interactions. In particular light fields with cylindrical symmetry such as Laguerre-Gaussian beams can possess orbital angular momentum, central to a wide range of emergent applications in quantum cryptography, manipulation, astrophysics and microscopy. A wide array of diffractive structures such as arrays of pinholes, triangular apertures, slits, and holograms have all recently been used to measure the azimuthal index L of individual LG beams. However, all these approaches measure only one single degree of freedom of LG beams, neglecting the radial component or P index and are thus not applicable for a priori unknown beams. Furthermore, it is unclear which is the optimal aperture and scheme needed to determine simultaneously the azimuthal and radial indices nor the extent with which such an aperture can tolerate deviations in beam parameters. Here, we demonstrate a powerful approach to simultaneously measure the radial and azimuthal indices of both pure and mixed LG light fields. We show that the shape of the diffracting element used to measure the mode indices is in fact of little importance and the crucial step is training any diffracting optical system and transforming the observed pattern into uncorrelated variables. Modest fluctuations in beam parameters such as waist size and alignment variations can be tolerated in our scheme. Importantly, beam superpositions can be experimentally decomposed delivering the intensity of each mode and their relative phases. Our results demonstrate the complete characterisation of LG beams. The approach can be expanded to other families of beams and represents a powerful method for characterising the optical multi-dimensional Hilbert space.

26The Centroid Shifts Of Light Beams Reflected From Multi-Layers And The Effects Of Angular Momentum Manifestations
By Mark T. Lusk, Mark E. Siemens and Guillermo F. Quinteiro
Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams reflected from a multi-layered dielectric experience a shift in their centroid that is different than that from a single interface. This has been previously investigated for linearly polarized beams and, to a much lesser extent, beams with spin angular momentum. Here a combination of perturbation and computational analyses is used to provide a unified quantification of these shifts in layered dielectrics with two parallel interfaces. The approach is then extended to consider the qualitatively new behavior that results when the light is endowed with an intrinsic orbital angular momentum--i.e. vortex beams. Destructive interference causes singular lateral shifts in the centroid of the reflected vortex beam for which spin alone produces only a mild modulation. In the case of total internal reflection, both spin and intrinsic orbital angular momentum contribute to an enhancement of these lateral shifts as the interlayer thickness is decreased. This is just the opposite of the trend associated with longitudinal shifts. Two geometries are considered: air/glass/air and glass/air/glass multi-layers. A commonly available glass is used to show that vortex beams can result in centroid shifts on the order of microns for beams with a significant reflection coefficient.

27Light-Cone Representation Of The Spin And Orbital Angular Momentum Of Relativistic Composite Systems
By Stanley J. Brodsky, Dae Sung Hwang, Bo-Qiang Ma and Ivan Schmidt
The matrix elements of local operators such as the electromagnetic current, the energy momentum tensor, angular momentum, and the moments of structure functions have exact representations in terms of light-cone Fock state wavefunctions of bound states such as hadrons. We illustrate all of these properties by giving explicit light-cone wavefunctions for the two-particle Fock state of the electron in QED, thus connecting the Schwinger anomalous magnetic moment to the spin and orbital momentum carried by its Fock state constituents. We also compute the QED one-loop radiative corrections for the form factors for the graviton coupling to the electron and photon. Although the underlying model is derived from elementary QED perturbative couplings, it in fact can be used to simulate much more general bound state systems by applying spectral integration over the constituent masses while preserving all of the Lorentz properties, giving explicit realization of the spin sum rules and other local matrix elements. The role of orbital angular momentum in understanding the "spin crisis" problem for relativistic systems is clarified. We also prove that the anomalous gravitomagnetic moment B(0) vanishes for any composite system. This property is shown to follow directly from the Lorentz boost properties of the light-cone Fock representation and holds separately for each Fock state component. We show how the QED perturbative structure can be used to model bound state systems while preserving all Lorentz properties. We thus obtain a theoretical laboratory to test the consistency of formulae which have been proposed to probe the spin structure of hadrons.

1Stories Mother Nature Told Her Children
By Jane Andrews
"You may think that Mother Nature, like the famous "old woman who lived in the shoe," has so many children that she doesn't know what to do. But you will know better when you become acquainted with her, and learn how strong she is, and how active; how she can really be in fifty places at once, taking care of a sick tree, or a baby flower just born; and, at the same time, building underground palaces, guiding the steps of little travellers setting out on long journeys, and sweeping, dusting, and arranging her great house,--the earth. And all the while, in the midst of her patient and never-ending work, she will tell us the most charming and marvellous stories of ages ago when she was young, or of the treasures that lie hidden in the most distant and secret closets of her palace; just such stories as you all like so well to hear your mother tell when you gather round her in the twilight." 10Thrill Book Vol. II No. 1, July 1, 1919
By Clarence Leroy Andrews, Christopher Bannister, H. Bedford-Jones, Leonard John Beeston, John Russell Coryell, John Ulrich Giesy, Harold Hersey, Ronald Oliphant, Nina Wilcox Putnam, Tod Robbins, Robert W. Sneddon and A. G. Taylor
It's the dawn of a new era with this first issue of The Thrill Book Volume 2, and the influential pulp magazine is back and twice as big as prior issues! This time we have the suspenseful gold mining mystery "Vanishing Gold", the taut spy thriller "The Seventh Glass", the third part of the globe-trotting spy story "Strasbourg Rose", and the first part to H. Bedord-Jones' swashbuckling adventure "The Opium Ship" to meet your pulpy needs. And if you are looking for something a little more weird or spooky, the suicide-tinged "When Ghosts Walked", the bizarre tale "The Bibulous Baby", and the hallucinatory mad ravings of "The Conqueror" should quell that particular hankering. All this and much more awaits those brave enough to take on the perils of the all-new, double-sized Thrill Book! - Summary by Ben Tucker
