This paper provides background information about the Project Hahn adventure-based program and its ongoing involvement with the Port Arthur Recovery Group to assist 42 adolescents directly affected by the murders of 36 people by a lone gunman in Tasmania in 1996. Case studies relate personal, social, and community issues faced by these adolescents, as well as post-course challenges as they attempted to implement personal changes within their community. The philosophy and practices of the Project Hahn therapy program are given: work with at-risk and socioeconomically disadvantaged youth, pre-course agreement among all participants, promotion of positive peer dynamics, instructional use of risk-recreation activities, freedom of task choice, peer and leader support, followup with participants, and cultivation of moral growth through small-group peer interaction. One case study documents how participation by a 15-year-old student in adventure activities helped her to reevaluate her experiences with the Port Arthur shooting and redefine personal issues of trust, vulnerability, and protective and defensive behaviors. Project Hahn will use planned intervention throughout each wilderness challenge course to experiment with a range of new ideas and behaviors; confront salient and pressing issues; and provide time and opportunity within a supportive and safe environment for adolescents identified by the Port Arthur Recovery Group to express fears, pain, and the traumatic impact of the shooting tragedy. Numerous counseling needs are generated in the aftermath of school crises, particularly crises involving school violence. Meeting these needs can be assisted when school psychologists involve classroom teachers in the planning and implementation of crisis counseling. This paper provides information about a crisis counseling intervention model (Mini-marathon Groups) that was developed by Terr (1992). It states that this model is particularly suitable for school psychologists to use when providing crisis training and consultation to classroom teachers. The Mini-marathon Group has five components: (1) providing facts and dispelling rumors, (2) sharing stories, (3) sharing symptoms, (4) empowerment, and (5) closure. The paper suggests that the use of this model will facilitate the goal of helping students work their way through the process of recovery. (Author/JDM)

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) resulting from parental incarceration upon children and adolescents in an African-American community. Methodology: Much of the literature on posttraumatic stress disorder focuses on children and adolescents that have been exposed to a one-time event (e.g. school shooting, natural disaster), failing to take into consideration chronic traumatization over a period of time. Most children have been exposed to multiple forms of trauma such as divorce, domestic violence, physical injury, physical/sexual abuse and parental incarceration. All of which can result in psychopathology. Results: Results indicate that the consequences of parental incarceration on children have received least attention in academic research, prison statistics, public policy and media coverage. Conclusion: The hardship of an incarcerated parent exacerbates psychopathology. Children typically display short-term coping responses to deal with their loss, which can develop into long-term emotional and behavioral challenges, such as anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, problems with school, delinquency, antisocial behaviors and drug use.

The research evidence for selecting students in higher education with and without regard to race and sex is examined to assist admissions officers in light of the 1978 Bakke decision, which seems to give schools the option to use race in admissions decisions. Three clusters of studies supporting the consideration of race-sex subgroups in admissions decisions are considered: (1) those showing no relationship, or perhaps a negative relationship between the traditional predictors and college grades for minority students; (2) those indicating the need for separate equations or cutoffs for each subgroup if traditional predictors are employed; and (3) those involving the utility of noncognitive or nontraditional variables in predicting minority student success. Proponents of using a single prediction equation or cutoff score suggest that this approach is most fair to all concerned. Proponents of using separate equations or cutoffs for each subgroup when traditional predictors are employed note that black males tend to be the least predictable race-sex subgroup and any general equation would discriminate most against them. One reason for considering noncognitive or nontraditional variables in predicting minority student success is to ensure having comparable information for minority and majority group college applicants. Some research has indicated that the typical minority applicant is not as sure what is being solicited and is less likely to know how to supply the information the college wants. It is concluded that strong consideration should be given to race-sex subgroups in admissions procedures. (SW)

What factors led to the decision to use force in Panama? President George Bush listed four reasons: to protect American citizens abroad, to defend democracy in Panama, to combat drug trafficking, and to protect the integrity of the Panama Canal treaties. For Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) Chairman Colin Powell, six criteria had to be satisfied: Was there sufficient provocation? Powell thought yes. Has the PDF (Panamanian Defense Force) changed and gone out of control? Again yes. Would Blue Spoon (the military plan for intervention) resolve the problem? Yes. would the plan minimize damage and casualties? Yes. Would it bring democracy? Yes. And public and press reaction? Probably positive. These statements coincide with four guidelines for using force in the aftermath of the cold war detailed in chapter 1. First, there was an identifiable threat to US interests on three counts. The killing of a US Marine officer on 16 December 1989 and the physical abuse of a Navy lieutenant and his wife had put Americans at risk. Noriega and the Panamanian Defense Force (PDF) appeared to be going out of control. By extension, this situation was seen as threatening the Panama Canal. PDF violence might put the canal at risk. Finally, there was Noriega's involvement in international drug trade, an increasingly important US national security issue. However, the decision to intervene entailed more than the defense of US interests. It included the normative objective of supporting democratization in Panama.

For the universe's biggest stars, even death is a show. Massive stars typically end their lives in explosive cataclysms, or supernovae, flinging abundant amounts of hot gas and radiation into outer space. Remnants of these dramatic deaths can linger for thousands of years and be easily detected by professional astronomers. However, not all stars like attention. Thirty thousand light-years away in the Cepheus constellation, astronomers think they've found a massive star whose death barely made a peep. Remnants of this shy star's supernova would have gone completely unnoticed if the super-sensitive eyes of NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope hadn't accidentally stumbled upon it. These three panels illustrate just how shy this star is. Unlike most supernova remnants, which are detectable at a variety of wavelengths ranging from radio to X-rays, this source only shows up in mid-infrared images taken by Spitzer's Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS). The remnant can be seen as a red-orange blob at the center of the picture. Although the visible-light (left) and near-infrared (middle) images capture the exact same region of space, the source is completely invisible in both pictures. Astronomers suspect that the remnant's elusiveness is due to its location away from our Milky Way galaxy's dusty main disk, which contains most of the galaxy's stars. A supernova is most noticeable when the material expelled during the star's furious death throes violently collides with surrounding dust. Since the shy star sits away from the galaxy's dusty and crowded disk, the hot gas and radiation it flung into space had little surrounding material to crash into. Thus, it is largely invisible at most wavelengths. MIPS did not need dust to see the remnant. The mid-infrared instrument was able to directly detect the oxygen-rich gas from the supernova's explosive death throes. The visible-light (left) image is a three-color composite of data from the California Institute of Technology's Digitized Sky Survey. In this image, light with a wavelength of 0.44 microns is represented as blue, 0.55-micron light is green, and 0.9-micron light is red. The near-infrared (middle) image is a two-color composite of data from Spitzer's infrared array camera. In this image, starlight captured at 4.5 microns is represented in blue, and 8-micron light from dust is green. The far-infrared image (right) combines the infrared array camera data with the multiband imaging photometer data, which show light of 24 microns in red.

On June 3, forces of the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) attacked the Ukrainian-controlled town of Marinka, around half a mile west of the rebel stronghold of Donetsk. The assault came three months after the signing of the second ceasefire, agreed in Minsk between the DNR and the Ukrainian government after the collapse of the first truce in early January. This ceasefire though, much like the first, failed to bring an end to the fighting. The attack on Marinka was the first large-scale assault on a Ukrainian-held town since February, and led many to believe a feared DNR summer offensive had begun. The assault failed, however, after the Ukrainian forces swiftly counter-attacked and forced the DNR to retreat — with both sides blaming each other for the escalation. In this extra scene from 'Ukraine's Failed Ceasefire,' VICE News met DNR soldiers in the trenches and talked to Ukrainian forces to find out more about the attack on Marinka.
