By Robert [Prior of Shrewsbury] ; Falconer, John (trans.) ; Baes, Martin (engr.)
8vo. pp. (34), 275, (13), with the final blank leaf. Engraved title by Martin Baes depicting a kneeling St. Winifred in the midst of her devotions and a view of St. Winifred’s well. Late 19-century sprinkled calf by F. Bedford, gilt edges. Head- and tailpieces, engraved initials. Saint Winifred was a virgin martyr from Wales who lived in the 7th century and was beheaded by Caradoc, a local prince she had enraged by rejecting his advances. At the place where Winifred's head fell, a healing spring appeared. Her uncle, Saint Beuno, thereupon raised her from the death and imprecated her killer. Winifred became increasingly popular, most of all in England, after her first vita was written down by the Benedictine monk Robert, prior of Shrewsbury (d. 1167), presumedly in 1130. In 1138, Prior Robert was able to convince the Abbot of Shrewsbury Abbey to acquire the relics of Saint Winifred to amplify the prestige of his order. The abbey erected a sophisticated shrine to honor the saint, which attracted many pilgrims. Prior Robert's work was first translated in 1485 by William Caxton and again in 1635 by the Jesuit John Falconer.
