In this paper we discuss certain stochastic aspects of the software reliability problem. We shall first discuss an empirical stopping note for debugging and testing computer software. We shall next present some results on choosing a time interval for testing the hypothesis that a software system contains no errors, given certain cost and risk constraints. (Author)

This thesis outlines the development, programming, and testing a logical interface between a radar system, the AN/SPS-65(V)1, and a general-purpose reconfigurable computing platform, the SRC Computer, Inc. model, the SRC-6E. To confirm the proper operation of the interface and associated subcomponents, software was developed to perform basic radar signal processing. The interface, as proven by the signal processing results, accurately reflects radar imagery generated by the radar system when compared to maps of the surrounding area. The research accomplished here will allow follow on research to evaluate the potential benefits reconfigurable computing platforms offer for radar signal processing.

Since the introduction of computing systems three decades ago, software development has grown increasingly in importance and complexity. Today the expense incurred by users in producing and maintaining programs exceeds ten billion dollars (Phister, 1976) and constitutes a large fraction of some corporate budgets (Dorn, 1978). Joint revenues of independent software suppliers exceeds one billion dollars, while revenues of computer manufacturers is approximately twice that (International Data Corporation, 1978). The increases in software-related expense far outstrip the growth in hardware costs. While the labor-intensive nature of software production has contributed to its increasing cost, competitive pressure and increased manufacturing automation have reduced the cost of hardware elements. It is for this and other reasons that Boehm (1973) predicted that software costs will constitute 90 percent of total system costs by 1985. As user needs become satisfied, software systems are designed to increasingly demanding specifications. This rapid growth in the number and complexity of desired systems demands equivalent increases in the number of qualified software specialists. More importantly, it dictates a maturity in software development methodology. The current state of 'software engineering' does not exhibit this degree of maturity, nor does any significant proportion of software workers employ those tools and techniques which most influence the quality of software systems. The purpose of this paper is to analyze in general the process of testing games and describe in more detail all the aspects of test phases in a game development process. The game industry has grown significantly in the last decade and many companies have started to use software engineering techniques in the game development process. All developing processes and products are subjected to test, for validation and verification. Modern software testing techniques can be easily used in game development as well, however it is not easy to test a game due to its complexity, but customers and managers are putting hard constraints on a game quality more and more frequently. Effective testing techniques can reduce the testing times and improve game quality and production time. This paper discusses a series of options to have Cubesat electronics monitor itself for degraded performance or pending failures due to on-orbit environmental conditions, and provide remediation when possible. From case studies, engineering analysis, and testing, it is fairly well understood how systems fail. One approach is to have a watchdog system to keep an eye on the main system. But how do we make the watchdog more reliable than the main program, a watch-cat? One of the issues in system failure is complexity, and complexity consists of the number of parts, and the number of interactions between parts. This has been shown to be true in both hardware and software.

This report presents an overview of the joint U.S. Coast Guard and Transport Canada-sponsored project to develop new research tools for evaluating personal floatation devices (PFDs). The U.S. Coast Guard and Transport Canada entered into a Joint Research Project Agreement (JARPA) in 1992 to develop new research tools to improve the understanding of the complicated effects of rough water on the performance of PFDs. Two tools were developed: (1) a computer simulation program called the Water Forces Analysis Capability (WAFAC) which simulates human body movement in a water environment, and (2) a sophisticated Sea Water Instrumented Manikin (SWIM) which can be used in the water to gather information on how the body reacts to the water environment. Preliminary testing of these two tools took place at the Institute for Marine Dynamics in St Johns, Newfoundland, Canada, in February and March of 1999. Testing of the SWIM was completed for a variety of simple cases in still water and in simple wave fronts. The same tests were simulated using the WAFAC computer model and some test data from SWIM. The results of the comparison of these tests, real and simulated, will help to establish continuity between the two tools. The testing identified some problems with the sensors having inadequate ranges for these tests. General agreement for rise times to the surface for bottom release tests was established. There was approximate agreement in heave amplitude and frequency, while other tests required the adjustment of coefficients. It was determined that better measurements of the center of gravity and buoyancy are needed for baseline inputs for the WAFAC program.
