In this first of a multi-step analysis we test whether, D, a novel metric of structural complexity, predicts the fitting propensity of structural equation models.

This pre-registration follows up on results obtained in a study registered with the same title. The paper expands the previous study, by reporting results of the tests pre-registered in Part 1, then derives from them new methods and predictions that this pre-registration will test. As before, the data that will be used to test the predictions consists in estimations of the fitting propensity of the models described in the paper. This data is not available at the time of registration, and it has not been seen by the authors.
