We present a full superconformal tensor calculus in five spacetime dimensions in which the Weyl multiplet has 32 Bose plus 32 Fermi degrees of freedom. It is derived by the dimensional reduction from the 6D superconformal tensor calculus. We present two types of 32+32 Weyl multiplets, vector multiplet, linear multiplet, hypermultiplet and nonlinear multiplet. Their superconformal transformation laws and the embedding and invariant action formulas are given.

In the context of finite deformation mechanics, a tangent mapping is anholonomic over some domain when it is not a gradient of a motion; conversely, a deformation gradient is holonomic when it is integrable to a motion field everywhere in that domain. This brief report addresses covariant differentiation for four possible choices of basis vectors in anholonomic space. As an example from continuum physics, the theory is applied towards description of divergence of the heat flux.

We introduce the anisotropic tensor calculus, which is a way of handling with tensors that depend on the direction remaining always in the same class. This means that the derivative of an anisotropic tensor is a tensor of the same type. As an application we show how to define derivations using anisotropic linear connections in a manifold. In particular, we show that the Chern connection of a Finsler metric can be interpreted as the Levi-Civita connection. Moreover, we also introduce the concept of anisotropic Lie derivative.

Supergravity tensor calculus in five spacetime dimensions is derived by dimensional reduction from the d=6 superconformal tensor calculus. In particular, we obtain an off-shell hypermultiplet in 5D from the on-shell hypermultiplet in 6D. Our tensor calculus still retains the dilatation gauge symmetry so that it becomes a trivial gauge fixing to make the Einstein term canonical in a general matter-Yang-Mills-supergravity coupled system.

These notes are the second part of the tensor calculus documents which started with the previous set of introductory notes (see T. Sochi, Introduction to Tensor Calculus, arXiv:1603.01660, 2016). In the present text, we continue the discussion of selected topics of the subject at a higher level expanding, when necessary, some topics and developing further concepts and techniques. Unlike the previous notes which are largely based on a Cartesian approach, the present notes are essentially based on assuming an underlying general curvilinear coordinate system.

Spectral methods are an efficient way to solve partial differential equations on domains possessing certain symmetries. The utility of a method depends strongly on the choice of spectral basis. In this paper we describe a set of bases built out of Jacobi polynomials, and associated operators for solving scalar, vector, and tensor partial differential equations in polar coordinates on a unit disk. By construction, the bases satisfy regularity conditions at r=0 for any tensorial field. The coordinate singularity in a disk is a prototypical case for many coordinate singularities. The work presented here extends to other geometries. The operators represent covariant derivatives, multiplication by azimuthally symmetric functions, and the tensorial relationship between fields. These arise naturally from relations between classical orthogonal polynomials, and form a Heisenberg algebra. Other past work uses more specific polynomial bases for solving equations in polar coordinates. The main innovation in this paper is to use a larger set of possible bases to achieve maximum bandedness of linear operations. We provide a series of applications of the methods, illustrating their ease-of-use and accuracy.

Euclidean quantum measure in Regge calculus with independent area tensors is considered using example of the Regge manifold of a simple structure. We go over to integrations along certain contours in the hyperplane of complex connection variables. Discrete connection and curvature on classical solutions of the equations of motion are not, strictly speaking, genuine connection and curvature, but more general quantities and, therefore, these do not appear as arguments of a function to be averaged, but are the integration (dummy) variables. We argue that upon integrating out the latter the resulting measure can be well-defined on physical hypersurface (for the area tensors corresponding to certain edge vectors, i.e. to certain metric) as positive and having exponential cutoff at large areas on condition that we confine ourselves to configurations which do not pass through degenerate metrics.

It is a commonplace that any theory can be written in any coordinates via tensor calculus. But it is claimed that spinors as such cannot be represented in coordinates in a curved space-time. What general covariance means for theories with fermions is thus unclear. In fact both commonplaces are wrong. Though it is not widely known, Ogievetsky and Polubarinov (OP) constructed spinors in coordinates in 1965, helping to spawn nonlinear group representations. Locally, these spinors resemble the orthonormal basis or "tetrad" formalism in the symmetric gauge, but they are conceptually self-sufficient. The tetrad formalism is de-Ockhamized, with 6 extra fields and 6 compensating gauge symmetries. OP spinors, as developed nonperturbatively by Bilyalov, admit any coordinates at a point, but "time" must be listed first: the product of the metric components and the matrix diag(-1,1,1,1) must have no negative eigenvalues to yield a real symmetric square root function of the metric. Thus the admissible coordinates depend on the types and values of the fields. Apart from coordinate order and spinorial two-valuedness, OP spinors form, with the metric, a nonlinear geometric object, with Lie and covariant derivatives. Such spinors avoid a spurious absolute object in the Anderson-Friedman analysis of substantive general covariance. They also permit the gauge-invariant localization of the infinite-component gravitational energy in GR. Density-weighted spinors exploit the conformal invariance of the massless Dirac equation to show that the volume element is absent. Thus instead of a matrix with 16 components, one can use weighted OP spinors coupled to the 9-component symmetric unimodular square root of the conformal metric density. The surprising mildness of the restrictions on coordinates for the Schwarzschild solution is exhibited. (edited)

A numerical approach to compute tensor integrals in one-loop calculations is presented. The algorithm is based on a recursion relation which allows to express high rank tensor integrals as a function of lower rank ones. At each level of iteration only inverse square roots of Gram determinants appear. For the phase-space regions where Gram determinants are so small that numerical problems are expected, we give general prescriptions on how to construct reliable approximations to the exact result without performing Taylor expansions. Working in 4+epsilon dimensions does not require an analytic separation of ultraviolet and infrared/collinear divergences, and, apart from trivial integrals that we compute explicitly, no additional ones besides the standard set of scalar one-loop integrals are needed.

A comparative analysis of the versions of quantum measure in the area tensor Regge calculus is performed on the simplest configurations of the system. The quantum measure is constructed in such the way that it reduces to the Feynman path integral describing canonical quantisation if the continuous limit along any of the coordinates is taken. As we have found earlier, it is possible to implement also the correspondence principle (proportionality of the Lorentzian (Euclidean) measure to $e^{iS}$ ($e^{-S}$), $S$ being the action). For that a certain kind of the connection representation of the Regge action should be used, namely, as a sum of independent contributions of selfdual and antiselfdual sectors (that is, effectively 3-dimensional ones). There are two such representations, the (anti)selfdual connections being SU(2) or SO(3) rotation matrices according to the two ways of decomposing full SO(4) group, as SU(2) $\times$ SU(2) or SO(3) $\times$ SO(3). The measure from SU(2) rotations although positive on physical surface violates positivity outside this surface in the general configuration space of arbitrary independent area tensors. The measure based on SO(3) rotations is expected to be positive in this general configuration space on condition that the scale of area tensors considered as parameters is bounded from above by the value of the order of Plank unit.

This book is about tensor analysis. It consists of 169 pages. The language and method used in presenting the ideas and techniques of tensors make it very suitable as a textbook or as a reference for an introductory course on tensor algebra and calculus or as a guide for self-studying and learning. The book contains many exercises. The detailed solutions of all these exercises are available in another book by the author (Solutions of Exercises of Tensor Calculus Made Simple).

This book contains the solutions of all the exercises of my book: Principles of Tensor Calculus. These solutions are sufficiently simplified and detailed for the benefit of readers of all levels particularly those at introductory levels.

In this paper, the notion of strongly typed language will be borrowed from the field of computer programming to introduce a calculational framework for linear algebra and tensor calculus for the purpose of detecting errors resulting from inherent misuse of objects and for finding natural formulations of various objects. A tensor bundle formalism, crucially relying on the notion of pullback bundle, will be used to create a rich type system with which to distinguish objects. The type system and relevant notation is designed to "telescope" to accomodate a level of detail appropriate to a set of calculations. Various techniques using this formalism will be developed and demonstrated with the goal of providing a relatively complete and uniform method of coordinate-free computation. The calculus of variations pertaining to maps between Riemannian manifolds will be formulated using the strongly typed tensor formalism and associated techniques. Energy functionals defined in terms of first order Lagrangians are the focus of the second half of this paper, in which in the first variation, the Euler-Lagrange equations, and the second variation of such functionals will be derived.

In this paper, we briefly discuss the dynamic and functional approach to computer symbolic tensor analysis. The ccgrg package for Wolfram Language/Mathematica is used to illustrate this approach. Some examples of applications are attached.

The uniformity of the decomposition law, for a family F of Lie algebras which includes the exceptional Lie algebras, of the tensor powers ad^n of their adjoint representations ad is now well-known. This paper uses it to embark on the development of a unified tensor calculus for the exceptional Lie algebras. It deals explicitly with all the tensors that arise at the n=2 stage, obtaining a large body of systematic information about their properties and identities satisfied by them. Some results at the n=3 level are obtained, including a simple derivation of the the dimension and Casimir eigenvalue data for all the constituents of ad^3. This is vital input data for treating the set of all tensors that enter the picture at the n=3 level, following a path already known to be viable for a_1. The special way in which the Lie algebra d_4 conforms to its place in the family F alongside the exceptional Lie algebras is described.

It is well known that for a given Poisson structure one has infinitely many star products related through the Kontsevich gauge transformations. These gauge transformations have an infinite functional dimension (i.e., correspond to an infinite number of degrees of freedom per point of the base manifold). We show that on a symplectic manifold this freedom may be almost completely eliminated if one extends the star product to all tensor fields in a covariant way and impose some natural conditions on the tensor algebra. The remaining ambiguity either correspond to constant renormalizations to the symplectic structure, or to maps between classically equivalent field theory actions. We also discuss how one can introduce the Riemannian metric in this approach and the consequences of our results for noncommutative gravity theories.

It's a good book to start studying tensor calculus

We construct exceptional field theory for the duality group SL(3)$\times$SL(2). The theory is defined on a space with 8 `external' coordinates and 6 `internal' coordinates in the $(3,2)$ fundamental representation, leading to a 14-dimensional generalized spacetime. The bosonic theory is uniquely determined by gauge invariance under generalized external and internal diffeomorphisms. The latter invariance can be made manifest by introducing higher form gauge fields and a so-called tensor hierarchy, which we systematically develop to much higher degree than in previous studies. To this end we introduce a novel Cartan-like tensor calculus based on a covariant nil-potent differential, generalizing the exterior derivative of conventional differential geometry. The theory encodes the full $D=11$ or type IIB supergravity, respectively.

Using the simple setting of 3D N=1 supergravity, we show how the tensor calculus of supergravity can be extended to manifolds with boundary. We present an extension of the standard F-density formula which yields supersymmetric bulk-plus-boundary actions. To construct additional separately supersymmetric boundary actions, we decompose bulk supergravity and bulk matter multiplets into co-dimension one submultiplets. As an illustration we obtain the supersymmetric extension of the York-Gibbons-Hawking extrinsic curvature boundary term. We emphasize that our construction does not require any boundary conditions on off-shell fields. This gives a significant improvement over the existing orbifold supergravity tensor calculus.

Because of unboundedness of the general relativity action, Euclidean version of the path integral in general relativity requires definition. Area tensor Regge calculus is considered in the representation with independent area tensor and finite rotation matrices. Being integrated over rotation matrices the path integral measure in area tensor Regge calculus is rewritten by moving integration contours to complex plain so that it looks as that one with effective action in the exponential with positive real part. We speculate that positivity of the measure can be expected in the most part of range of variation of area tensors.

The SageManifolds project aims at extending the mathematics software system Sage towards differential geometry and tensor calculus. Like Sage, SageManifolds is free, open-source and is based on the Python programming language. We discuss here some details of the implementation, which relies on Sage's parent/element framework, and present a concrete example of use.
