1NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19820012713: Evaluation Of HCMM Satellite Data For Estuarine Tidal Circulation Patterns And Thermal Inertia Soil Moisture Measurements. [Delaware Bay, Cooper River, And The Potomac River Estuaries; Luverne, Minnesota, Soil Moisture, And Water Temperature Of Lake Anna, Virginia

By

Digital thermal maps of the Cooper River (SC) and the Potomac River estuaries were prepared from heat capacity mapping radiometer (HCMR) tapes. Tidal phases were correctly interpreted and verified. Synoptic surface circulation patterns were charted by location thermal fronts and water mass boundaries within the estuaries. Thermal anomalies were detected adjacent of a conventional power plant on the Potomac. Under optimum conditions, estuaries as small as the Cooper River can be monitored for generalized thermal/tidal circulation patterns by the HCMM-type IR sensors. The HCMM thermal inertia approach to estimating soil moisture at the Luverne (MN) test site was found to be unsatisfactory as a NESS operational satellite technique because of cloud cover interference. Thermal-IR data show similar structure of the Baltimore and Washington heat islands when compared to NOAA AVHRR thermal-IR data. Thermal anomalies from the warm water discharge water of a nuclear power plant were mapped in Lake Anna, Virginia.

2DTIC ADA296570: An Evaluation Of Selected Virtual Temperature Data Acquired At The APRF In 1994.

By

Composite vertical profiles of virtual temperature within the boundary layer and troposphere over White Sands Missile Range, NM using Radio Acoustic Sounding Systems (RASS) data were first made available over the Internet in Feb 94. The composite virtual temperature profiles are based on selected levels of air temperature from a fixed tower and from the RASS associated with 924. 404 and 50-MHz radar profilers located at the Atmospheric Profiler Research Facility . Three questions arose with respect to these profiles: (1) how well do they compare with corresponding radiosonde temperature profiles, (2) were the RASS levels selected for each profiler optimal, and (3) how could automatic quality-control procedures be improved? To address these questions, a set of composite virtual temperature profiles corresponding to a special series of radiosonde release. from a nearby site from Mar through Jul 94 were analyzed. As a result of these analyses, a revised set of RASS levels to be used with each profiler is proposed and an improved set of quality control criteria for application to the 404MHz RASS data is suggested Comparisons of the 924- and 404-MHz RASS virtual temperature with the corresponding radiosonde temperatures revealed that thi agreement was less than or equal to 2.0 0C in 74 and S8 percent, respectively, of the comparisons. In those cases when either the profilers of the radiosondes showed temperature inversions, there was no corresponding inversion in the other profile. The inversion problem merits further investigation. (MM)

5NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19740004034: Evaluation Of ERTS Data For Certain Oceanographic Uses. [sunglint, Algal Bloom, Water Temperature, Upwelling, And Turbidity Of Great Lakes Waters

By

The author has identified the following significant results. (1) Sunglint effects over water can be expected in ERTS-1 images whenever solar elevations exceed 55 deg. (2) Upwellings were viewed coincidently by ERTS-1 and NOAA-2 in Lake Michigan on two occasions during August 1973. (3) A large oil slick was identified 100 km off the Maryland coast in the Atlantic Ocean. Volume of the oil was estimated to be least 200,000 liters (50,000 gallons). (4) ERTS-1 observations of turbidity patterns in Lake St. Clair provide circulation information that correlates well with physical model studies made 10 years ago. (5) Good correlation has been established between ERTS-1 water color densities and NOAA-2 thermal infrared surface temperature measurements. Initial comparisons have been made in Lake Erie during March 1973.

6NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20160005288: Temperature And Humidity Profiles In The TqJoint Data Group Of AIRS Version 6 Product For The Climate Model Evaluation

By

The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) mission is entering its 13th year of global observations of the atmospheric state, including temperature and humidity profiles, outgoing long-wave radiation, cloud properties, and trace gases. Thus AIRS data have been widely used, among other things, for short-term climate research and observational component for model evaluation. One instance is the fifth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) which uses AIRS version 5 data in the climate model evaluation. The NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) is the home of processing, archiving, and distribution services for data from the AIRS mission. The GES DISC, in collaboration with the AIRS Project, released data from the version 6 algorithm in early 2013. The new algorithm represents a significant improvement over previous versions in terms of greater stability, yield, and quality of products. The ongoing Earth System Grid for next generation climate model research project, a collaborative effort of GES DISC and NASA JPL, will bring temperature and humidity profiles from AIRS version 6. The AIRS version 6 product adds a new "TqJoint" data group, which contains data for a common set of observations across water vapor and temperature at all atmospheric levels and is suitable for climate process studies. How different may the monthly temperature and humidity profiles in "TqJoint" group be from the "Standard" group where temperature and water vapor are not always valid at the same time? This study aims to answer the question by comprehensively comparing the temperature and humidity profiles from the "TqJoint" group and the "Standard" group. The comparison includes mean differences at different levels globally and over land and ocean. We are also working on examining the sampling differences between the "TqJoint" and "Standard" group using MERRA data.
