1Simulation Model Of The Flow In The Drainage System Of Ambon City Withexplicit Finite Difference Method
Analysis of flood modeling scenarios conducted on the simulation of urban drainage systems in Ambon city based on mathematical equations finite difference method which allows analyzing the water depth and flowing rate as a function of space and time. In order to study the propagation of flooding in the drainage channel with the 1D model of Saint Venant hydrodynamic equations are approximated by explicit MacCormack numerical method which is used as a simulation model. Numerical solution with MacCormack discretization technique on the parameters that influence the system can provide stable and final results that can be trusted. The purpose of this model is that it can reduce the volume of puddles on the local channel of drainage system area.

3A High Energy Electron And Photon Detector Simulation System
By Srikanta Sinha
A detailed Monte-Carlo code has been developed from basic principles that simulates almost all of the basic photon and charged particle interactions. The code is used to derive the response functions of a high energy photon detector to incident beams of photons of various energies. The detector response matrices (DRMs) are calculated using this code. Deconvolution of an artificially generated spectrum is presented.

4Autonomous Agent Interactions In A Real-time Simulation System
By McAndrews, Gary Michael
The heat transfer characteristics and performance capabilities of a liquid flow-through module for electronics cooling were investigated experimentally using the Standard Electronics Module, format "E" (SEM-E) size module. Brayco Micronic 889, a dielectric polyalphaolefin, was tested as the coolant. One surface of the flow-through module was populated with six etched foil heaters placed on the module over the fluid flow path. With thermocouples affixed to the surface and placed in the inlet and outlet tubing, data was gathered and analyzed to quantify module effectiveness in dissipating heat over a variety of power input settings and coolant flow rates.

6ERIC ED033732: The Effect Of Response Time Upon Utilization Of An Information Retrieval System; A Simulation.
By ERIC
A simulation program is presented which considers the effect of response time upon the utilization of a multiple node information system. Specific examples of such systems are presented. They include: (1) information networks, (2) library systems, (3) multi-level files. The simulation characterizes users (in terms of their information requirements and expectations), information services, and nodes of locations at which those services are available. The effects of various allocations of resources to different levels of service, different locations, and different response times can be demonstrated, particularly in terms of the levels and kinds of utilization. 7Design On Large-Scale Shaft Lining Mechanical Simulation Test System
By Luo Jing, Liu Xiliang, Wang Yuqing
Based on the background of studying shear stress bearing of shaft linings in the depth and thickness stratum, we carried out research and study in design of the large-scale shaft lining mechanical simulation test system. The simulation tests, namely the shear model tests on the interface of single layer shaft lining, the model tests on the coupling effect of double layer shaft linings and the mechanic characteristics of piles can be carry out. This system can simulate shear properties of the shaft lining loading up to 13MPa level pressure of the soil. A novel self-designed loading hydraulic cylinder with large diameter and hollow piston solved the problems of multi-cylinder synchronization and spatial arrangement. The flexible design of connector of test model is applicable condition in various test scheme of the thickness requirement for shaft lining. Loading method, load bearing bodies and the design of the connector of test model for simulation test provides a new way for large-scale model tests.

9Question-answer Inputs To A Simulation Program Generating System
By Baker, Eldon Stover
One of the objectives of a research effort at the Naval Postgraduate School is the realization of a \"simulation program generating system\" to produce accountable computer programs from natural language descriptions of simulation problems. The basic part of the system being developed is a FORTRAN program for translating input text into a representative data structure. Previous work has resulted in the capability to translate the data structure for a simulation problem into an English text description and a GPSS computer program. The purpose of this thesis was to supplement the above with an interactive question-answer scheme that generates the simulation problem data structure. The resulting GPSS \"simulation program generating system\" is capable of handling a variety of simple queuing problems.

A measurement-based quantum computer could consist of a local-gapped Hamiltonian system, whose thermal states --at sufficiently low temperature-- are universal resources for the computation. Initialization of the computer would correspond to cooling the system. We perform an experimental quantum simulation of such cooling process with entangled photons. We prepare three-qubit thermal cluster states exploiting the equivalence between local dephasing and thermalisation for these states. This allows us to tune the system's temperature by changing the dephasing strength. We monitor the entanglement as the system cools down and observe the transitions from separability to bound entanglement, and then to free entanglement. We also analyze the performance of the system for measurement-based single-qubit state preparation. These studies constitute a basic characterisation of experimental cluster-state computation under imperfect conditions.

17GenASiS: General Astrophysical Simulation System. II. Nonrelativistic Hydrodynamics
By Christian Y. Cardall, Reuben D. Budiardja, Eirik Endeve and Anthony Mezzacappa
In this paper, the second in a series, we document the algorithms and solvers for compressible nonrelativistic hydrodynamics implemented in GenASiS (General Astrophysical Simulation System)---a new code being developed initially and primarily, though by no means exclusively, for the simulation of core-collapse supernovae. In the Mathematics division of GenASiS we introduce Solvers, which includes finite-volume updates for generic hyperbolic BalanceEquations and ordinary differential equation integration Steps. We also introduce the Physics division of GenASiS; this extends the Manifolds division of Mathematics into physical Spaces, defines StressEnergies, and combines these into Universes. We benchmark the hydrodynamics capabilities of GenASiS against many standard test problems; the results illustrate the basic competence of our implementation, demonstrate the manifest superiority of the HLLC over the HLL Riemann solver in a number of interesting cases, and provide preliminary indications of the code's ability to scale and to function with cell-by-cell fixed-mesh refinement.

18Efficient Simulation Of Strong System-environment Interactions
By Javier Prior, Alex. W. Chin, Susana. F. Huelga and Martin . B. Plenio
Multi-component quantum systems in strong interaction with their environment are receiving increasing attention due to their importance in a variety of contexts, ranging from solid state quantum information processing to the quantum dynamics of bio-molecular aggregates. Unfortunately, these systems are difficult to simulate as the system-bath interactions cannot be treated perturbatively and standard approaches are invalid or inefficient. Here we combine the time dependent density matrix renormalization group methods with techniques from the theory of orthogonal polynomials to provide an efficient method for simulating open quantum systems, including spin-boson models and their generalisations to multi-component systems.

24A Simulation Evaluation Of The Engine Monitoring And Control System Display
By Abbott, Terence S
The Engine Monitoring and Control System (E-MACS) display is a new concept for an engine instrument display, the purpose of which is to provide an enhanced means for a pilot to control and monitor aircraft engine performance. It provides graphically-presented information about performance capabilities, current performance, and engine component or subsystem operational conditions relative to nominal conditions. The concept was evaluated by sixteen pilot-subjects against a traditional, state-of-the-art electronic engine display format. The results of this evaluation showed a substantial pilot preference for the E-MACS display relative to the traditional display. The results of the failure detection portion of the evaluation showed a 100 percent detection rate for the E-MACS display relative to a 57 percent rate for the traditional display. From these results, it is concluded that by providing this type of information in the cockpit, a reduction in pilot workload and an enhanced ability for detecting degraded or off-nominal conditions is probable, thus leading to an increase in operational safety.

25Simulation Of An Improved Cyclone System By Artificial Neural Network, Adaptive-network-based Fuzzy Inference System And Hybrid ANN-genetic Algorithm Approach
Simulation of an improved cyclone was carried out by means of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), and hybrid ANN-Genetic Algorithm (GA). The apparatus consists of two cyclones coupled with a specially designed cylindrical chamber, which includes a rotating tube inside with air-impinging nuzzles drilled on the peripheral surface of the tube. The chamber includes a tube with nozzles on its peripheral surface from which jet-impingement flow throws the particles nearer to wall of the chamber. Efficiency of the jet-impingement chamber, as a function of flow rate on the feed, recycle, jet-impingement along with jet-impingement tube rotational speed, has been tested. ANN, ANFIS, and hybrid ANN-GA are capable to accurately capture the non-linear characteristics of the chamber performance.

30Structural Simulation Of A Bone-Prosthesis System Of The Knee Joint.
By Andra, Heiko, Battiato, Sebastiano, Bilotta, Giuseppe, Farinella, Giovanni M., Impoco, Gaetano, Orlik, Julia, Russo, Giovanni and Zemitis, Aivars
This article is from Sensors (Basel, Switzerland) , volume 8 . Abstract In surgical knee replacement, the damaged knee joint is replaced with artificial prostheses. An accurate clinical evaluation must be carried out before applying knee prosthe-ses to ensure optimal outcome from surgical operations and to reduce the probability of having long-term problems. Useful information can be inferred from estimates of the stress acting onto the bone-prosthesis system of the knee joint. This information can be exploited to tailor the prosthesis to the patient's anatomy. We present a compound system for pre-operative surgical planning based on structural simulation of the bone-prosthesis system, exploiting patient-specific data.

35NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20050214739: Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS): An Award Winning Propulsion System Simulation Tool
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS) is a full propulsion system simulation tool used by aerospace engineers to predict and analyze the aerothermodynamic behavior of commercial jet aircraft, military applications, and space transportation. The NPSS framework was developed to support aerospace, but other applications are already leveraging the initial capabilities, such as aviation safety, ground-based power, and alternative energy conversion devices such as fuel cells. By using the framework and developing the necessary components, future applications that NPSS could support include nuclear power, water treatment, biomedicine, chemical processing, and marine propulsion. NPSS will dramatically reduce the time, effort, and expense necessary to design and test jet engines. It accomplishes that by generating sophisticated computer simulations of an aerospace object or system, thus enabling engineers to "test" various design options without having to conduct costly, time-consuming real-life tests. The ultimate goal of NPSS is to create a numerical "test cell" that enables engineers to create complete engine simulations overnight on cost-effective computing platforms. Using NPSS, engine designers will be able to analyze different parts of the engine simultaneously, perform different types of analysis simultaneously (e.g., aerodynamic and structural), and perform analysis in a more efficient and less costly manner. NPSS will cut the development time of a new engine in half, from 10 years to 5 years. And NPSS will have a similar effect on the cost of development: new jet engines will cost about a billion dollars to develop rather than two billion. NPSS is also being applied to the development of space transportation technologies, and it is expected that similar efficiencies and cost savings will result. Advancements of NPSS in fiscal year 2001 included enhancing the NPSS Developer's Kit to easily integrate external components of varying fidelities, providing the initial Visual-Based Syntax (VBS) capability, and developing additional capabilities to support space transportation. NPSS was supported under NASA's High Performance Computing and Communications Program. Through the NASA/Industry Cooperative Effort agreement, NASA Glenn and its industry and Government partners are developing NPSS. The NPSS team consists of propulsion experts and software engineers from GE Aircraft Engines, Pratt & Whitney, The Boeing Company, Honeywell, Rolls-Royce Corporation, Williams International, Teledyne Continental Motors, Arnold Engineering Development Center, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, and the NASA Glenn Research Center. Glenn is leading the way in developing NPSS--a method for solving complex design problems that's faster, better, and cheaper.

36NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20110023975: Simulation System For Training In Laparoscopic Surgery
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
A computer-based simulation system creates a visual and haptic virtual environment for training a medical practitioner in laparoscopic surgery. Heretofore, it has been common practice to perform training in partial laparoscopic surgical procedures by use of a laparoscopic training box that encloses a pair of laparoscopic tools, objects to be manipulated by the tools, and an endoscopic video camera. However, the surgical procedures simulated by use of a training box are usually poor imitations of the actual ones. The present computer-based system improves training by presenting a more realistic simulated environment to the trainee. The system includes a computer monitor that displays a real-time image of the affected interior region of the patient, showing laparoscopic instruments interacting with organs and tissues, as would be viewed by use of an endoscopic video camera and displayed to a surgeon during a laparoscopic operation. The system also includes laparoscopic tools that the trainee manipulates while observing the image on the computer monitor (see figure). The instrumentation on the tools consists of (1) position and orientation sensors that provide input data for the simulation and (2) actuators that provide force feedback to simulate the contact forces between the tools and tissues. The simulation software includes components that model the geometries of surgical tools, components that model the geometries and physical behaviors of soft tissues, and components that detect collisions between them. Using the measured positions and orientations of the tools, the software detects whether they are in contact with tissues. In the event of contact, the deformations of the tissues and contact forces are computed by use of the geometric and physical models. The image on the computer screen shows tissues deformed accordingly, while the actuators apply the corresponding forces to the distal ends of the tools. For the purpose of demonstration, the system has been set up to simulate the insertion of a flexible catheter in a bile duct. [As thus configured, the system can also be used to simulate other endoscopic procedures (e.g., bronchoscopy and colonoscopy) that include the insertion of flexible tubes into flexible ducts.] A hybrid approach has been followed in developing the software for real-time simulation of the visual and haptic interactions (1) between forceps and the catheter, (2) between the forceps and the duct, and (3) between the catheter and the duct. The deformations of the duct are simulated by finite-element and modalanalysis procedures, using only the most significant vibration modes of the duct for computing deformations and interaction forces. The catheter is modeled as a set of virtual particles uniformly distributed along the center line of the catheter and connected to each other via linear and torsional springs and damping elements. The interactions between the forceps and the duct as well as the catheter are simulated by use of a ray-based haptic-interaction- simulating technique in which the forceps are modeled as connected line segments.

37NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20180000528: Performance And Evaluation Of The Global Modeling And Assimilation Office Observing System Simulation Experiment
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (NASA/GMAO) has spent more than a decade developing and implementing a global Observing System Simulation Experiment framework for use in evaluting both new observation types as well as the behavior of data assimilation systems. The NASA/GMAO OSSE has constantly evolved to relect changes in the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation data assimiation system, the Global Earth Observing System model, version 5 (GEOS-5), and the real world observational network. Software and observational datasets for the GMAO OSSE are publicly available, along with a technical report. Substantial modifications have recently been made to the NASA/GMAO OSSE framework, including the character of synthetic observation errors, new instrument types, and more sophisticated atmospheric wind vectors. These improvements will be described, along with the overall performance of the current OSSE. Lessons learned from investigations into correlated errors and model error will be discussed.

38NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20060051715: Experimental Validation Of A Closed Brayton Cycle System Transient Simulation
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The Brayton Power Conversion Unit (BPCU) is a closed cycle system with an inert gas working fluid. It is located in Vacuum Facility 6 at NASA Glenn Research Center. Was used in previous solar dynamic technology efforts (SDGTD). Modified to its present configuration by replacing the solar receiver with an electrical resistance heater. The first closed-Brayton-cycle to be coupled with an ion propulsion system. Used to examine mechanical dynamic characteristics and responses. The focus of this work was the validation of a computer model of the BPCU. Model was built using the Closed Cycle System Simulation (CCSS) design and analysis tool. Test conditions were then duplicated in CCSS. Various steady-state points. Transients involving changes in shaft rotational speed and heat input. Testing to date has shown that the BPCU is able to generate meaningful, repeatable data that can be used for computer model validation. Results generated by CCSS demonstrated that the model sufficiently reproduced the thermal transients exhibited by the BPCU system. CCSS was also used to match BPCU steady-state operating points. Cycle temperatures were within 4.1% of the data (most were within 1%). Cycle pressures were all within 3.2%. Error in alternator power (as much as 13.5%) was attributed to uncertainties in the compressor and turbine maps and alternator and bearing loss models. The acquired understanding of the BPCU behavior gives useful insight for improvements to be made to the CCSS model as well as ideas for future testing and possible system modifications.

39NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20110010844: A Computer Simulation Of The System-Wide Effects Of Parallel-Offset Route Maneuvers
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Most aircraft managed by air-traffic controllers in the National Airspace System are capable of flying parallel-offset routes. This paper presents the results of two related studies on the effects of increased use of offset routes as a conflict resolution maneuver. The first study analyzes offset routes in the context of all standard resolution types which air-traffic controllers currently use. This study shows that by utilizing parallel-offset route maneuvers, significant system-wide savings in delay due to conflict resolution of up to 30% are possible. It also shows that most offset resolutions replace horizontal-vectoring resolutions. The second study builds on the results of the first and directly compares offset resolutions and standard horizontal-vectoring maneuvers to determine that in-trail conflicts are often more efficiently resolved by offset maneuvers.

40NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20140013325: Piloted Simulation Of A Model-Predictive Automated Recovery System
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
This presentation describes a model-predictive automatic recovery system for aircraft on the verge of a loss-of-control situation. The system determines when it must intervene to prevent an imminent accident, resulting from a poor approach. It estimates the altitude loss that would result from a go-around maneuver at the current flight condition. If the loss is projected to violate a minimum altitude threshold, the maneuver is automatically triggered. The system deactivates to allow landing once several criteria are met. Piloted flight simulator evaluation showed the system to provide effective envelope protection during extremely unsafe landing attempts. The results demonstrate how flight and propulsion control can be integrated to recover control of the vehicle automatically and prevent a potential catastrophe.

42Modelling And Simulation Of Facts Devices TCSC And SVC For A 11 Bus Power System
By Vinit K Sharma | Namrata Sant
Due to the ever increasing demand for power and the growth of the transmission network, transmission lines must now be operated under load, posing a danger of power flow control and voltage instability. This study proposes using TCSC and SVC devices to control power flow in a power system network. The TCSC is a series compensated device that lowers transmission line reactance and improves power flow, whereas the SVC is a shunt compensated device that improves voltage profile. This paper describes a method for modelling and simulation with MATLAB SIMULINK Sim power System block set . For power flow management and voltage stability limit, the appropriate position of TCSC and SVC devices is evaluated. The proposed method is implemented on a two area four machine 11 bus test system model, and the simulated results are shown to validate the test case system. The performance of the TCSC and SVC devices is evaluated in this study, and the simulated results are compared for better power flow regulation in the power system. 43NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20120006524: Adaptive System Modeling For Spacecraft Simulation
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
This invention introduces a methodology and associated software tools for automatically learning spacecraft system models without any assumptions regarding system behavior. Data stream mining techniques were used to learn models for critical portions of the International Space Station (ISS) Electrical Power System (EPS). Evaluation on historical ISS telemetry data shows that adaptive system modeling reduces simulation error anywhere from 50 to 90 percent over existing approaches. The purpose of the methodology is to outline how someone can create accurate system models from sensor (telemetry) data. The purpose of the software is to support the methodology. The software provides analysis tools to design the adaptive models. The software also provides the algorithms to initially build system models and continuously update them from the latest streaming sensor data. The main strengths are as follows: Creates accurate spacecraft system models without in-depth system knowledge or any assumptions about system behavior. Automatically updates/calibrates system models using the latest streaming sensor data. Creates device specific models that capture the exact behavior of devices of the same type. Adapts to evolving systems. Can reduce computational complexity (faster simulations).

44NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19940019719: A Simulation System For Space Station Extravehicular Activity
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
America's next major step into space will be the construction of a permanently manned Space Station which is currently under development and scheduled for full operation in the mid-1990's. Most of the construction of the Space Station will be performed over several flights by suited crew members during an extravehicular activity (EVA) from the Space Shuttle. Once fully operational, EVA's will be performed from the Space Station on a routine basis to provide, among other services, maintenance and repair operations of satellites currently in Earth orbit. Both voice recognition and helmet-mounted display technologies can improve the productivity of workers in space by potentially reducing the time, risk, and cost involved in performing EVA. NASA has recognized this potential and is currently developing a voice-controlled information system for Space Station EVA. Two bench-model helmet-mounted displays and an EVA simulation program have been developed to demonstrate the functionality and practicality of the system.

45NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20110016015: Initial Flow Matching Results Of MHD Energy Bypass On A Supersonic Turbojet Engine Using The Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS) Environment
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Preliminary flow matching has been demonstrated for a MHD energy bypass system on a supersonic turbojet engine. The Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS) environment was used to perform a thermodynamic cycle analysis to properly match the flows from an inlet to a MHD generator and from the exit of a supersonic turbojet to a MHD accelerator. Working with various operating conditions such as the enthalpy extraction ratio and isentropic efficiency of the MHD generator and MHD accelerator, interfacing studies were conducted between the pre-ionizers, the MHD generator, the turbojet engine, and the MHD accelerator. This paper briefly describes the NPSS environment used in this analysis and describes the NPSS analysis of a supersonic turbojet engine with a MHD generator/accelerator energy bypass system. Results from this study have shown that using MHD energy bypass in the flow path of a supersonic turbojet engine increases the useful Mach number operating range from 0 to 3.0 Mach (not using MHD) to an explored and desired range of 0 to 7.0 Mach.

46NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20120015001: A Regional CO2 Observing System Simulation Experiment Using ASCENDS Observations And WRF-STILT Footprints
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Knowledge of the spatiotemporal variations in emissions and uptake of CO2 is hampered by sparse measurements. The recent advent of satellite measurements of CO2 concentrations is increasing the density of measurements, and the future mission ASCENDS (Active Sensing of CO2 Emissions over Nights, Days and Seasons) will provide even greater coverage and precision. Lagrangian atmospheric transport models run backward in time can quantify surface influences ("footprints") of diverse measurement platforms and are particularly well suited for inverse estimation of regional surface CO2 fluxes at high resolution based on satellite observations. We utilize the STILT Lagrangian particle dispersion model, driven by WRF meteorological fields at 40-km resolution, in a Bayesian synthesis inversion approach to quantify the ability of ASCENDS column CO2 observations to constrain fluxes at high resolution. This study focuses on land-based biospheric fluxes, whose uncertainties are especially large, in a domain encompassing North America. We present results based on realistic input fields for 2007. Pseudo-observation random errors are estimated from backscatter and optical depth measured by the CALIPSO satellite. We estimate a priori flux uncertainties based on output from the CASA-GFED (v.3) biosphere model and make simple assumptions about spatial and temporal error correlations. WRF-STILT footprints are convolved with candidate vertical weighting functions for ASCENDS. We find that at a horizontal flux resolution of 1 degree x 1 degree, ASCENDS observations are potentially able to reduce average weekly flux uncertainties by 0-8% in July, and 0-0.5% in January (assuming an error of 0.5 ppm at the Railroad Valley reference site). Aggregated to coarser resolutions, e.g. 5 degrees x 5 degrees, the uncertainty reductions are larger and more similar to those estimated in previous satellite data observing system simulation experiments.

47NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20140005982: Preliminary Observing System Simulation Experiments For Doppler Wind Lidars Deployed On The International Space Station
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's Software Systems Support Office (SSSO) is participating in a multi-agency study of the impact of assimilating Doppler wind lidar observations on numerical weather prediction. Funded by NASA's Earth Science Technology Office, SSSO has worked with Simpson Weather Associates to produce time series of synthetic lidar observations mimicking the OAWL and WISSCR lidar instruments deployed on the International Space Station. In addition, SSSO has worked to assimilate a portion of these observations those drawn from the NASA fvGCM Nature Run into the NASA GEOS-DAS global weather prediction system in a series of Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs). These OSSEs will complement parallel OSSEs prepared by the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation and by NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory. In this talk, we will describe our procedure and provide available OSSE results.

48NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19970001352: Development Of An Intelligent Monitoring And Control System For A Heterogeneous Numerical Propulsion System Simulation
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The NASA Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS) project is exploring the use of computer simulation to facilitate the design of new jet engines. Several key issues raised in this research are being examined in an NPSS-related research project: zooming, monitoring and control, and support for heterogeneity. The design of a simulation executive that addresses each of these issues is described. In this work, the strategy of zooming, which allows codes that model at different levels of fidelity to be integrated within a single simulation, is applied to the fan component of a turbofan propulsion system. A prototype monitoring and control system has been designed for this simulation to support experimentation with expert system techniques for active control of the simulation. An interconnection system provides a transparent means of connecting the heterogeneous systems that comprise the prototype.

49NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20110003628: Simulation Of Benchmark Cases With The Terminal Area Simulation System (TASS)
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The hydrodynamic core of the Terminal Area Simulation System (TASS) is evaluated against different benchmark cases. In the absence of closed form solutions for the equations governing atmospheric flows, the models are usually evaluated against idealized test cases. Over the years, various authors have suggested a suite of these idealized cases which have become standards for testing and evaluating the dynamics and thermodynamics of atmospheric flow models. In this paper, simulations of three such cases are described. In addition, the TASS model is evaluated against a test case that uses an exact solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. The TASS results are compared against previously reported simulations of these benchmark cases in the literature. It is demonstrated that the TASS model is highly accurate, stable and robust.

2Works of Tacitus, Vol. I
By Thomas Gordon and Publius Cornelius Tacitus
The historical works of Tacitus are a history of the period from A.D. 14 to 96 in thirty volumes. Although many of the works were lost (only books 1-5 of the Histories and 1-6 and 11-16 of the Annals survive), enough remains to provide a good sense of Tacitus’s political and moral philosophy.<br /><br />He recognized the necessity for strong rulers but argued that more should be done to manage the succession of power and allow for the ascension of talent. Tacitus asserted that it was the dynastic ambitions of Rome’s many emperors that caused the decline of moral and political life and precluded the possibility of recruiting leaders of real ability. Moreover, the dynastic temptation caused political instability because military force was now required for political change. His works point to the necessity of systematic institutional restraints on power for the preservation of liberty.<br /><br />Gordon’s translation and his lengthy Discourses on Tacitus bring Tacitus’ ideas up to date and apply them to the British state of the early 18th century. An open life, an open hand, open upward, is the pipe line of communication between the heart of God and this poor befooled old world. Our prayer is God's opportunity to get into the world that would shut Him out. (From the first chapter)

4Quiet Talks about Jesus
By S. D. Gordon

So far as I can find out, I have no theory about Jesus to make these talks fit into. I have tried to find out for myself what the old Book of God tells about Him. And here I am trying to tell to others, as simply as I can, what I found. It was by the tedious, twisting path of doubt that I climbed the hill of truth up to some of its summits of certainty. I am free to confess that I am ignorant of the subject treated here save for the statements of that Book, and for the assent within my own spirit to these statements, which has greatly deepened the impression they made, and make. There is no question raised here about that Book itself, but simply a taking and grouping up together of what it says. ( Summary by Introductory Section )

5Poems
By Adam Lindsay Gordon

This is a volume of poems by Adam Lindsay Gordon, 'British-born Australian Steeple-Chase Rider and Poet'.<br></br>"The poems of Gordon have an interest beyond the mere personal one which his friends attach to his name. Written, as they were, at odd times and leisure moments of a stirring and adventurous life, it is not to be wondered at if they are unequal or unfinished. The astonishment of those who knew the man, and can gauge the capacity of this city [Melbourne] to foster poetic instinct, is that such work was ever produced here at all. Intensely nervous, and feeling much of that shame at the exercise of the higher intelligence which besets those who are known to be renowned in field sports, Gordon produced his poems shyly, scribbled them on scraps of paper, and sent them anonymously to magazines. It was not until he discovered one morning that everybody knew a couplet or two of "How we Beat the Favourite" that he consented to forego his anonymity and appear in the unsuspected character of a versemaker. The success of his republished "collected" poems gave him courage, and the unreserved praise which greeted "Bush Ballads" should have urged him to forget or to conquer those evil promptings which, unhappily, brought about his untimely death.' - Summary from the Preface.<br>Note: The dramas (fragment of the Road to Avernus and Ashtaroth) have been left out of this volume.

7Sons of the Covenant: A Tale of London Jewry
By Samuel Gordon
Born in London's poverty-stricken and heavily Jewish East End, the Lipcott boys create their own successes in life and love. The brothers' commitment to improving the lives of working class people leads them to concoct The Scheme to help both the residents of their former neighbourhood and the Jewish people as a whole. The author stresses the responsibility of middle class Jews toward the Jewish poor. Consequently, this 1900 story has its preachy moments as well as some essentialised speculations about Jewish history and character. But the book isn't all earnestness - there are character studies, love interests, and some great comic scenes, too! The son of a Russian rabbi, Samuel Gordon (1871-1927) was born in Germany and came to England at the age of 13. Like Phil Lipcott, his protagonist in this novel, Gordon attended Cambridge University. The club envisioned by The Scheme seems modeled after London's Jewish Working Men's Institute. This was one of several East End organisations (e.g., the Jewish Girls Club, the Brady Boys Club) established by Jewish philanthropists around the turn of the 19th century to "instill in the rising generation all that is best in the English character..." (Col. A. E. Goldsmit, founder of the Jewish Lads Brigade). (Summary by Adrian Praetzellis)

8קוצו של יוד (The Point on Top of the Yodh)
By יהודה לייב גורדון Judah Leib Gordon
בספרות העברית ידועה הפואמה כאחת המחאות הפואטיות החריפות כנגד השלטון הרבני על הקהילה מצד אחד, וקיפוח זכויותיהן של נשים מצד שני.</p>"The Point on Top of the Yodh" is a Hebrew poem by Judah Leib Gordon that was published serially in 1876 in the journal <i>Hashachar</i> (edited by Peretz Smolenskin) and refined by the poet into its final form in 1878. The title of the poem is derived from its story of a woman who obtains a divorce document from her husband, who had deserted her. However, a rabbi invalidates the divorce document because of a missing letter (a yodh) in the husband’s name. The poem is considered one of the strongest protests in Hebrew literature against rabbinic rule over the community and discrimination against women. (Summary from Wikipedia)

9שני ימים ולילה אחד בבית מלון אורחים (Two Days and One Night in a Hotel)
By יהודה לייב גורדון Judah Leib Gordon
Judah Leib Gordon was born to well-to-do Jewish parents who owned a hotel in Vilnius, Lithuania. He took a leading part in the modern revival of the Hebrew language and culture. His satires did much to rouse the Russian Jews to a new sense of the reality of life, and Gordon was the apostle of enlightenment in the Ghettos. His Hebrew style is classical and pure. Much of his poetry revolves around biblical and historical themes. His works were intended to disseminate Enlightenment values and had a profound impact on Jewish life. Many feel his romantic works lack the same militancy as his poetic works, though his advocacy resurfaces in his realistic novels. <i>Two Days and One Night in a Hotel</i>, first published in 1868, is set in a shtetl (a small Jewish village in Eastern Europe), where life was full of contradictions. (Summary by Wikipedia and Omri Lernau)
