5DTIC ADA565204: Acquisition Of A Scanning Laser Vibrometer System For Experimental Studies On Nonparametric Nonlinear System Identification And Aeroelastic Instability Suppression

By

The PIs current research and development, funded by AFOSR, aims to develop novel means of vibration control for aerospace systems, system identification procedures for strongly nonlinear dynamical systems, and a fully passive limit cycle oscillation (LCO) suppression system for a model generic transport wing (GTW) previously designed, built and tested in the TDT at NASA Langley. Initial efforts by the PIs led to the development of the Nonlinear Energy Sink (NES), a completely passive nonlinear mechanical device that, when physically attached to a vibrating primary system, draws energy from that system into itself in a one-way, irreversible fashion and effectively dissipates it. Later efforts by the PIs resulted in the formulation of the NSI method for system ID, combining local and global components to account for the sensitivity of strongly nonlinear systems to initial conditions and forcing. The PIs final work, still ongoing, in conjunction with NextGen Aeronautics, Inc. and colleagues at Texas A&M University, will result in the design of an NES-based LCO suppression system housed in a winglet, specifically designed for the GTW. Upon completion of rehabilitation and modifications to the wing to accommodate the winglet/NES, the full system will be ready for additional testing in the TDT.

6DTIC ADA439030: Sequential Multisine Excitation Signals For System Identification Of Large Space Structures

By

Linear system identification of complex nonlinear systems, such as large space structures, can be difficult because such systems are often lightly damped, have dense modal spacing, respond to disturbances over a large frequency bandwidth, and exhibit nonlinear responses. Many excitation signals used to collect frequency response data for linear system identification are poorly suited to systems that exhibit nonlinear responses. Specifically, random noise, burst random noise, pulse-impact, and multisine excitation signals can create undesired non-linear distortions in the frequency response data that are generally indistinguishable from the linear frequency response. Thus, sine dwell (also called stepped sine) excitation signals are often used to obtain frequency response to be separated from higher order harmonics. However, sine dwell testing can be very time consuming. In this paper, we present a novel sequence of multisine excitation signals that are more time efficient than sine dwell excitation while eliminating the effects of nonlinearity induced harmonics from the frequency response data. The sequential multisine excitation signal is demonstrated on the Deployable Optical Telescope testbed at Air Force Research Laboratory.

7DTIC ADA100663: Standard Technical Manual Identification Numbering System (TMINS). M0000-00-IDX-000 TMINS

By

The Standard Technical Manual Identification Numbering Systems (TMINS) has been promulgated to initiate the implementation of a single significant numbering system for technical manuals and related technical documents procured by Naval Material Command (NMC) Components. TMINS may also be used for identifying publications and other documents when it is desired that they may be centrally controlled, tracked and indexed. The use of the single numbering systems will eliminate the complications in the Fleet that now result from the different numbering systems in use. In addition the single numbering system will aid the standardization of cataloging within the Systems Commands and will simplify the interfaces between TM data collection and TM information systems. This index and guide has two purposes: (1) To explain the concepts of the TMIN System and the composition of the TMINS number. (2) To provide the necessary data for proper applications of TMINS numbers.

8NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19880004244: A System Identification Technique Based On The Random Decrement Signatures. Part 2: Experimental Results

By

Identification of the system parameters of a randomly excited structure may be treated using a variety of statistical techniques. Of all these techniques, the Random Decrement is unique in that it provides the homogeneous component of the system response. Using this quality, a system identification technique was developed based on a least-squares fit of the signatures to estimate the mass, damping, and stiffness matrices of a linear randomly excited system. The results of an experiment conducted on an offshore platform scale model to verify the validity of the technique and to demonstrate its application in damage detection are presented.

9NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19910012261: Comparison Of Several System Identification Methods For Flexible Structures

By

In the last few years various methods of identifying structural dynamics models from modal testing data have appeared. A comparison is presented of four of these algorithms: the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA), the modified version ERA/DC where DC indicated that it makes use of data correlation, the Q-Markov Cover algorithm, and an algorithm due to Moonen, DeMoor, Vandenberghe, and Vandewalle. The comparison is made using a five mode computer module of the 20 meter Mini-Mast truss structure at NASA Langley Research Center, and various noise levels are superimposed to produced simulated data. The results show that for the example considered ERA/DC generally gives the best results; that ERA/DC is always at least as good as ERA which is shown to be a special case of ERA/DC; that Q-Markov requires the use of significantly more data than ERA/DC to produce comparable results; and that is some situations Q-Markov cannot produce comparable results.

10NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19990064145: Optical Verification Laboratory Demonstration System For High Security Identification Cards

By

Document fraud including unauthorized duplication of identification cards and credit cards is a serious problem facing the government, banks, businesses, and consumers. In addition, counterfeit products such as computer chips, and compact discs, are arriving on our shores in great numbers. With the rapid advances in computers, CCD technology, image processing hardware and software, printers, scanners, and copiers, it is becoming increasingly easy to reproduce pictures, logos, symbols, paper currency, or patterns. These problems have stimulated an interest in research, development and publications in security technology. Some ID cards, credit cards and passports currently use holograms as a security measure to thwart copying. The holograms are inspected by the human eye. In theory, the hologram cannot be reproduced by an unauthorized person using commercially-available optical components; in practice, however, technology has advanced to the point where the holographic image can be acquired from a credit card-photographed or captured with by a CCD camera-and a new hologram synthesized using commercially-available optical components or hologram-producing equipment. Therefore, a pattern that can be read by a conventional light source and a CCD camera can be reproduced. An optical security and anti-copying device that provides significant security improvements over existing security technology was demonstrated. The system can be applied for security verification of credit cards, passports, and other IDs so that they cannot easily be reproduced. We have used a new scheme of complex phase/amplitude patterns that cannot be seen and cannot be copied by an intensity-sensitive detector such as a CCD camera. A random phase mask is bonded to a primary identification pattern which could also be phase encoded. The pattern could be a fingerprint, a picture of a face, or a signature. The proposed optical processing device is designed to identify both the random phase mask and the primary pattern [1-3]. We have demonstrated experimentally an optical processor for security verification of objects, products, and persons. This demonstration is very important to encourage industries to consider the proposed system for research and development.

12DTIC ADA423506: A Laboratory For System Identification Of Mistuning In Integrally Bladed Disks

By

The funds received from the DURIP proposal were to be used to purchase a Polytech scanning vibrometer. The vibrometer is being used to make precise measurements of the mistuned modes and natural frequencies of integrally bladed disks (IBRs) in the Mistuning System Identification Laboratory. The resulting data is then used as input to system identification software that is being developed at CMU under a separate Air Force contract. The system identification software then determines the mistuning in each blade. This report documents the development of the vibration laboratory, the types of measurements that are being done, and the research that has been made possible through its use.

13DTIC ADA237093: Empirical Identification Of User Information Requirements In Command And Control System Evaluation

By

This paper summarizes a study that was conducted to address user information requirements for the Force Level Control System. It was the first in a series being conducted at the U.S. Army Tactical Command and Control System Experimentation Site (AES). User information requirements were determined via monitoring and classification of communications during a command and control exercise, as well as through subsequent exercise participant input. Separate measures of observed communication frequency, rated importance, and rated perishability were obtained for a set of information elements that comprised a comprehensive taxonomy of tactical command and control communications content. Analyses were then conducted to explore the relationships between frequency, importance, and perishability as well as develop a comprehensive index of criticality. The resulting comprehensive index of criticality is intended to be used by systems developers in selecting the information to be conveyed and processed by the Force Level Control System.

14Reconfigurable Planar Inverted-F Antenna For Radio Frequency Identification Tag And Global Positioning System Applications

By

This paper presents the design of a reconfigurable planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA). The proposed antenna is designed and optimized to operate in two frequency bands. 2.4 GHz allocated to the industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band for the identification of a set of vehicules within a given area, and 1.575 GHz allocated to the global positioning system (GPS) band to locate them outside. The ISM band is used for microwave frequencies for active radio frequency identification (RFID) tag, which is associated with the object to be identified. This antenna consists of two radiating elements connected by a positive-intrinsic-negative (PIN) diode to obtain the frequency reconfigurability. The first radiating element is connected to the ground plane by a shorting pin and excited by a 50 Ω coaxial feed line. Its total size is 30 mm × 50 mm × 7 mm. The substrate used is FR4 with constant dielectric relativity of 4.4 and a height of 1.6 mm. Computer simulation technology microwave studio (CST MWS) software is used to simulate and optimize the proposed reconfigurable PIFA antenna.

15DTIC AD0776377: Operational Tests Of The Coherent Optical Fingerprint Identification System (COFIDS)

By

At the request of the U.S. Army Office of the Provost Marshall General, the U.S. Army Land Warfare Laboratory performed a test and evaluation of the Coherent Optical Fingerprint Identification System (COFIDS). This system employs the techniques of optical holography to encode fingerprint details and store such information, with high data density, on miniature photographic films. Identification is performed by comparing fingerprints with the hologram using optical cross-correlation. The test, involving over 100 people of USALWL, was carefully designed and instrumented to provide complete statistics of performance. The evaluation indicates that the system provides a highly foolproof means of personnel identification. Equipment improvements are desirable to automatically compensate for fingerprint variability and to reduce the learning process required of users.

16DTIC ADA241125: Task Identification And Evaluation System (TIES)

By

Five maintenance task data systems in the Air Force provide a variety of task information. Each was developed for different purposes, but only two of these systems use any of the data from the others. The five systems are the Occupational Survey Method, the Maintenance Data Collection System, the Logistics Composite Model, the Logistic Support Analysis Records, and Instructional systems Development data. Each of these task data systems and their uses are described in detail. Data elements which would permit their linking in a Task Identification and Evaluation System (TIES) are identified. While the different systems can be linked, considerable subject matter specialist assistance will be required to automate the system. Nevertheless, the potential importance to manpower, personnel, and training integration makes development of a TIES highly desirable.

17DTIC ADA150032: System Identification Analysis Of Inertia And Drag Coefficients For Offshore Structure Forces Due To Combined Ocean Waves And Currents.

By

An extended form of the Morison equation force model is considered for the case of an offshore structure vertical leg lement in a combined wave and current flow field. The measurement data used in the analysis is that from OTS(Ocean Test Structure) investigation in the Gulf of Mexico, with the data in the form of 27-30 second wave segments containing velocity and force component measurements in two perpendicular directions in the horizontal plane. The analysis method used was the system identification technique that has been previously applied with success to similar type data when using the conventional Morison force model, with the objective being the determination of the drag and inertia force coefficient values together with the variation of these coefficients with different characteristic flow parameters. The results support the use of the extended Morison model, but the force coefficient values do not indicate any definitive trend in terms of the current velocity parameter. The force coefficients found here are only useful as an additional contribution to a data base for establishing design ranges of such coefficients. Keywords include: Morison equation; waves; currents; wave forces; offshore structure; drag coefficient; inertia coefficient.

18DTIC ADB226867: Multichannel System Identification And Detection Using Output Data Techniques. Volume 1

By

The multichannel innovations-based detection algorithm (MIBDA) methodology formulated in Phase I was developed in full and evaluated in the context of two applications: (a) airborne surveillance phased array radar systems, and (b) computer-based electrocardiogram (ECG) diagnosis. A software simulation was developed to generate simulated multichannel phased array radar data. This software was exercised to represent ground clutter as the output of a state variable model (SVM), and to assess the performance of such models in the MIBDA. The MIBDA was modified and extended to the automated diagnosis of ECG traces. MIBDA performance for ECG diagnosis was assessed using the Common Standards for Quantitative Electrocardiography (CSE) database. Analysis and simulation results indicate that the MIBDA offers a valid alternative to conventional systems in both of the applications considered. This suggests also that the MIBDA can be configured to apply to a wide range of problem areas. Volume I presents the MIBDA methodology, SVM identification algorithms, MIBDA design and performance evaluation issues, and simulation results for both applications. Volume II presents the analytic and software model for airborne surveillance phased array radar systems.

19DTIC ADA518461: Marine Ship Automatic Identification System (AIS) For Enhanced Coastal Security Capabilities: An Oil Spill Tracking Application

By

National and international trade via shipping is already significant, and expected to continue increasing rapidly over the next decade. Both more and larger ships will contribute to this trade, including ships from countries with less rigorous shipping maintenance and inspection standards than the United States, and less strict pollution monitoring regulations. Changes in ship traffic management protocols have been implemented in recent years in the US to minimize damage to coastlines, particularly near sensitive or protected marine environments. For example, to reduce risk to coastal resources off central California, shipping lanes for larger vessels were moved further offshore to allow for additional response time in case of accidents before such vessels might drift into coastal areas. Similarly, ships are now routed via specific approach channels when entering Boston Harbor to reduce impacts within adjacent National Marine Sanctuary resources. Several recent high profile cases have occurred where 'mystery' oil spills were found near shipping channels, but no vessel could be readily identified as their source. These incidents lead to extensive and expensive efforts to attempt to identify the ships responsible. As time passes in responding to these incidents, the likelihood of confirming the identity of the ships diminishes. Unfortunately, reports of vessels engaging in illegal oily waste discharge to reduce fees for offloading the waste in port are ongoing. We here discuss use of improved capabilities of near-continuous real-time position location monitoring of shipping traffic using marine Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) for ships that would facilitate identification of ships responsible for illegal oily waste discharge. The next phase of the National AIS, N-AIS Increment 2, can supply additional spatial coverage not currently included in the N-AIS Increment 1, which can provide and enhanced capability for monitoring shipping and improving management.

20DTIC ADA133157: A Maximum Likelihood Program For Non-Linear System Identification With Application To Aircraft Flight Data Compatibility Checking,

By

A Fortran program has been developed for the Maximum Likelihood Estimation of parameters in non-linear systems. The program structure uses subroutines to describe the problem and define problem-specific elements, while the main program is designed to be problem-independent as far as possible. In the present note an application of the program to compatibility checking of aircraft dynamic flight test data has been studied. Using simulated time histories of longitudinal manoeuvres, the conditions for satisfactory performance have been identified. It has been shown that for a practical manoeuvre shape, record length and sampling rate and for reasonable noise levels on the measured data, instrument errors can be identified to good accuracy and a set of compatible time histories reconstructed. 23A Multi-instance Multi-sample Palmprint Identification System

By

The multibiometric recognition system considered more reliable than the unimodal biometric recognition system due to the addition of an extra information that increases the discrimination between the classes. In this paper, a multi-sample multi-instance biometric recognition system is proposed. The aim of the proposed system is to increase the robustness of the identification. The proposed system also addresses the overfitting to the train samples problem of a feature extraction algorithm, named 2-Dimensional Linear Discriminant analysis (2D-LDA). The samples in the proposed method are bootstrapped and the 2D-LDA performed on each group during the offline phase. While in the online phase, the tested class will be transformed into subspaces using different eigenvectors that obtained from different samplings, and the results matched with templates in the corresponding subspace. To evaluate the proposed method, two palmprint databases are used which are IIT Delhi Touchless Palmprint Database and PolyU palmprint database, and different rank-level fusion algorithms are investigated. The results of the proposed method show improvement in the identification rate.

24DTIC AD0739971: Standard Printing Color Identification System

By

The Department of Defense - Mapping, Charting, and Geodesy (DOD-MC+G) Color Identification System for Lithographic Printing is broad enough in scope to include and catalog all colors in a logical, orderly arrangement. Under this system, lithographic colors are assigned numbers which are descriptive of the color values. The system is based on international values as seen by an international standard observer and illuminant. The CIE description of color is applied as the basis for color identification. This report also describes the means of applying color values to an ink formulation and specification system for the manufacture/blending of color matched lithographic inks. The ink formulation is based on using eight basic colors plus black and white. Blending these in specified parts can produce virtually all ink colors.

25DTIC AD0414525: QUASILINEARIZATION, SYSTEM IDENTIFICATION, AND PREDICTION

By

An adaptive controller is one which has the capability of learning about unknown aspects of a system being controlled and then modifying its control regime in an effort to improve the quality of the control exerted. A mathematical formulation and computational solution of the problems of system identification and the determination of unmeasurable state variables on the basis of observations of a process, two topics of central importance in the design of adaptive controllers are presented. The approach suggested-based on the theory of quasilinearization-is an outgrowth of continuing RAND research on the computational solution of multi-point boundary-value problems. The paper should be of interest to control engineers and numerical analysts.

26DTIC ADA047228: The Identification And Application Of USAF Base Level Supply System Management Indicators.

By

NORS rates are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the USAF base level supply system. This thesis critiques the use of NORS rates and other management indicators used by USAF managers in evaluating supply system performance and proposes new management indicators. USAF inventory policy is examined and the EOQ item, recoverable item, and engine inventory models are analyzed. Each model's variables, assumed demand distribution, implied performance level, and constraints are reviewed. Indicators are proposed that will provide managers with information with which to ensure actual variable values to not exceed their constraints. The proposed indicators will provide a method for evaluating and controlling base level supply system performance. Although a management indicator that directly measures the relationship between supply system performance and operational capability can not be developed, the proposed indicators will minimize back-orders. RAND has shown that my minimizing backorders, the NORS rate is also approximately minimized. Additionally, NORM should be reduced when backorders are minimized. While some computer programming changes will be required, no changes to USAF inventory policy will be necessary to use the proposed indicators. (Author)

27DTIC ADA071063: Nonlinear System Identification Based On A Fock Space Framework.

By

A method is presented for the identification of a nonlinear system represented by an operator V:E yields Y, where the input space E is a separable Hilbert space over the field of complex numbers and the output space Y is the Sobolev space H(n)-squared of complex-valued functions y on an interval I of the real line such that dky/dtk, k=O,...,n-1, are absolutely continuous and dny/dtn and element of L-squared (I). The above developments permit us to obtain the solution to our nonlinear system identification problem as the solution to an appropriate minimum norm problem in B(n)-squared (I.F sub rho(E)). Procedures for obtaining both the noncausal and causal solutions are given. We also introduce the concept of 'epsilon-causality', which is weaker than that of causality, and derive an epsilon-causal solution to our problem. The case when measurement errors are present is finally considered. The results are illustrated by the computer simulation of a simple example in which very good agreement with the theory is obtained over a wide time-interval.

33ERIC ED117262: Methodological Issues In The Early Identification Of A High Risk Population In An Urban Public School System.

By

This paper describes Project HELP (Highlighting Early Learning Problems) stated to have been designed to determine or to develop a battery of screening instruments to identify those K-1 students who manifest learning problems indicative of exceptionality. The purposes, objectives, and a summary of the types of evaluation questions the study sought to investigate are provided. The methodology section contains a description of the sample involved and the screening instruments used. The instruments used in the identification of potential learning problems at level one include a teacher checklist of development, parent checklist of development, teacher observation survey, and language and health screening form. A summary of the procedure involved with each instrument is discussed. The results of the study indicate an overall high risk percentage of approximately 22 percent which is considered to approximate theoretical high risk percentages of potential learning problems specified by professionals in the field of special education. Several recommendations are made, among them being a projected information retrieval system, a proposed diagnostic/assessment center, and in-service training program. (Author/AM)

35Using Domain Knowledge In Evolutionary System Identification

By

Two example of Evolutionary System Identification are presented to highlight the importance of incorporating Domain Knowledge: the discovery of an analytical indentation law in Structural Mechanics using constrained Genetic Programming, and the identification of the repartition of underground velocities in Seismic Prospection. Critical issues for sucessful ESI are discussed in the light of these results.

36NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19940023405: System Identification Of The Large-Angle Magnetic Suspension Test Facility (LAMSTF)

By

The Large-Angle Magnetic Suspension Test Facility (LAMSTF), a laboratory-scale research project to demonstrate the magnetic suspension of objects over wide ranges of attitudes, has been developed. This system represents a scaled model of a planned Large-Gap Magnetic Suspension System (LGMSS). The LAMSTF system consists of a planar array of five copper electromagnets which actively suspend a small cylindrical permanent magnet. The cylinder is a rigid body and can be controlled to move in five independent degrees of freedom. Five position variables are sensed indirectly by using infra-red light-emitting diodes and light-receiving phototransistors. The motion of the suspended cylinder is in general nonlinear and hence only the linear, time-invariant perturbed motion about an equilibrium state is considered. One of the main challenges in this project is the control of the suspended element over a wide range of orientations. An accurate dynamic model plans an essential role in controller design. The analytical model of the LAMSTF system includes highly unstable real poles (about 10 Hz) and low-frequency flexible modes (about 0.16 Hz). Projection filters are proposed to identify the state space model from closed-loop test data in time domain. A canonical transformation matrix is also derived to transform the identified state space model into the physical coordinate. The LAMSTF system is stabilized by using a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) feedback controller. The rate information is obtained by calculating the back difference of the sensed position signals. The reference inputs contain five uncorrelated random signals. This control input and the system reponse are recorded as input/output data to identify the system directly from the projection filters. The sampling time is 4 ms and the model is fairly accurate in predicting the step responses for different controllers while the analytical model has a deficiency in the pitch axis.

37System M: A Program Logic For Code Sandboxing And Identification

By

Security-sensitive applications that execute untrusted code often check the code's integrity by comparing its syntax to a known good value or sandbox the code to contain its effects. System M is a new program logic for reasoning about such security-sensitive applications. System M extends Hoare Type Theory (HTT) to trace safety properties and, additionally, contains two new reasoning principles. First, its type system internalizes logical equality, facilitating reasoning about applications that check code integrity. Second, a confinement rule assigns an effect type to a computation based solely on knowledge of the computation's sandbox. We prove the soundness of system M relative to a step-indexed trace-based semantic model. We illustrate both new reasoning principles of system M by verifying the main integrity property of the design of Memoir, a previously proposed trusted computing system for ensuring state continuity of isolated security-sensitive applications.

38Deterministic Designs With Deterministic Guarantees: Toeplitz Compressed Sensing Matrices, Sequence Designs And System Identification

By

In this paper we present a new family of discrete sequences having "random like" uniformly decaying auto-correlation properties. The new class of infinite length sequences are higher order chirps constructed using irrational numbers. Exploiting results from the theory of continued fractions and diophantine approximations, we show that the class of sequences so formed has the property that the worst-case auto-correlation coefficients for every finite length sequence decays at a polynomial rate. These sequences display doppler immunity as well. We also show that Toeplitz matrices formed from such sequences satisfy restricted-isometry-property (RIP), a concept that has played a central role recently in Compressed Sensing applications. Compressed sensing has conventionally dealt with sensing matrices with arbitrary components. Nevertheless, such arbitrary sensing matrices are not appropriate for linear system identification and one must employ Toeplitz structured sensing matrices. Linear system identification plays a central role in a wide variety of applications such as channel estimation for multipath wireless systems as well as control system applications. Toeplitz matrices are also desirable on account of their filtering structure, which allows for fast implementation together with reduced storage requirements.

39Tensor Network Alternating Linear Scheme For MIMO Volterra System Identification

By

This article introduces two Tensor Network-based iterative algorithms for the identification of high-order discrete-time nonlinear multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Volterra systems. The system identification problem is rewritten in terms of a Volterra tensor, which is never explicitly constructed, thus avoiding the curse of dimensionality. It is shown how each iteration of the two identification algorithms involves solving a linear system of low computational complexity. The proposed algorithms are guaranteed to monotonically converge and numerical stability is ensured through the use of orthogonal matrix factorizations. The performance and accuracy of the two identification algorithms are illustrated by numerical experiments, where accurate degree-10 MIMO Volterra models are identified in about 1 second in Matlab on a standard desktop pc.

40DTIC ADA268525: Heat Transfer Parametric System Identification

By

This work describes the development of a computer based model that would allow for determination of the transient thermal response characteristics of jet vanes of any size. The model used a thermal lump approach method, considering only conductive and convective heat transfer properties. A constrained optimizer was used to adjust the unknown variables until an adequate match was achieved between the calculated values of the energy balance equations and the experimental data obtained from test firings of a rocket motor. The full scale modeling results were compared to previous quarter scale models in an attempt to determine the applicability of the quarter scale results to full scale vanes. It was determined that the quarter scale model did not provide an accurate representation of the heat transfer process in larger scale vanes, although the full scale model provided a sufficient representation of the thermal response of the jet vane....
