1Transient And Equilibrium Synchronization In Complex Neuronal Networks

By

Transient and equilibrium synchronizations in complex neuronal networks as a consequence of dynamics induced by having sources placed at specific neurons are investigated. The basic integrate-and-fire neuron is adopted, and the dynamics is estimated computationally so as to obtain the activation at each node along each instant of time. In the transient case, the dynamics is implemented so as to conserve the total activation entering the system. In our equilibrium investigations, the internally stored activation is limited to the value of the respective threshold. The synchronization of the activation of the network is then quantified in terms of its normalized entropy. The equilibrium investigations involve the application of a number of complementary characterization methods, including spectra and Principal Component Analysis, as well as of an equivalent model capable of reproducing both the transient and equilibrium dynamics. The potential of such concepts and measurements is explored with respect to several theoretical models, as well as for the neuronal network of \emph{C. elegans}. A series of interesting results are obtained and discussed, including the fact that all models led to a transient period of synchronization, whose specific features depend on the topological structures of the networks. The investigations of the equilibrium dynamics revealed a series of remarkable insights, including the relationship between spiking oscillations and the hierarchical structure of the networks and the identification of twin correlation patterns between node degree and total activation, implying that hubs of connectivity are also hubs of integrate-and-fire activation.

2Synchronization In The Random Field Kuramoto Model On Complex Networks

By

We study the impact of random pinning fields on the emergence of synchrony in the Kuramoto model on complete graphs and uncorrelated random complex networks. We consider random fields with uniformly distributed directions and homogeneous and heterogeneous (Gaussian) field magnitude distribution. In our analysis we apply the Ott-Antonsen method and the annealed-network approximation to find the critical behavior of the order parameter. In the case of homogeneous fields, we find a tricritical point above which a second-order phase transition gives place to a first-order phase transition when the network is either fully connected, or scale-free with the degree exponent $\gamma>5$. Interestingly, for scale-free networks with $2 3$. Our simulations support these analytical results.

3Complex Transitions To Synchronization In Delay-coupled Networks Of Logistic Maps

By

A network of delay-coupled logistic maps exhibits two different synchronization regimes, depending on the distribution of the coupling delay times. When the delays are homogeneous throughout the network, the network synchronizes to a time-dependent state [Atay et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 144101 (2004)], which may be periodic or chaotic depending on the delay; when the delays are sufficiently heterogeneous, the synchronization proceeds to a steady-state, which is unstable for the uncoupled map [Masoller and Marti, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 134102 (2005)]. Here we characterize the transition from time-dependent to steady-state synchronization as the width of the delay distribution increases. We also compare the two transitions to synchronization as the coupling strength increases. We use transition probabilities calculated via symbolic analysis and ordinal patterns. We find that, as the coupling strength increases, before the onset of steady-state synchronization the network splits into two clusters which are in anti-phase relation with each other. On the other hand, with increasing delay heterogeneity, no cluster formation is seen at the onset of steady-state synchronization; however, a rather complex unsynchronized state is detected, revealed by a diversity of transition probabilities in the network nodes.

4Synchronization-Desynchronization Transitions In Complex Networks: An Interplay Of Distributed Time Delay And Inhibitory Nodes

By

We investigate the combined effects of distributed delay and the balance between excitatory and inhibitory nodes on the stability of synchronous oscillations in a network of coupled Stuart--Landau oscillators. To this end a network model is proposed for which the stability can be investigated analytically. It is found that beyond a critical inhibition ratio synchronization tends to be unstable. However, increasing distributional widths can counteract this trend leading to multiple resynchronization transitions at relatively high inhibition ratios. All studies are performed on two distribution types, a uniform distribution and a Gamma distribution.

5Synchronization In Complex Networks

By

Synchronization processes in populations of locally interacting elements are in the focus of intense research in physical, biological, chemical, technological and social systems. The many efforts devoted to understand synchronization phenomena in natural systems take now advantage of the recent theory of complex networks. In this review, we report the advances in the comprehension of synchronization phenomena when oscillating elements are constrained to interact in a complex network topology. We also overview the new emergent features coming out from the interplay between the structure and the function of the underlying pattern of connections. Extensive numerical work as well as analytical approaches to the problem are presented. Finally, we review several applications of synchronization in complex networks to different disciplines: biological systems and neuroscience, engineering and computer science, and economy and social sciences.

6Modular Synchronization In Complex Networks

By

We study the synchronization transition (ST) of a modified Kuramoto model on two different types of modular complex networks. It is found that the ST depends on the type of inter-modular connections. For the network with decentralized (centralized) inter-modular connections, the ST occurs at finite coupling constant (behaves abnormally). Such distinct features are found in the yeast protein interaction network and the Internet, respectively. Moreover, by applying the finite-size scaling analysis to an artificial network with decentralized inter-modular connections, we obtain the exponent associated with the order parameter of the ST to be $\beta \approx 1$ different from $\beta_{\rm MF} \approx 1/2$ obtained from the scale-free network with the same degree distribution but the absence of modular structure, corresponding to the mean field value.

7Hub Induced Remote Synchronization And Desynchronization In Complex Networks Of Kuramoto Oscillators

By

The concept of "remote synchronization" (RS) was introduced in [Phys. Rev. E 85, 026208 (2012)], where synchronization in a star network of Stuart-Landau oscillators was investigated. In the RS regime therein described, the central hub served as a transmitter of information between peripheral nodes, while maintaining independent dynamics that were asynchronous with the rest of the network. One of the key conclusions of that paper was that RS cannot occur in pure phase-oscillator networks. Here, we show that the RS regime can exist in networks of Kuramoto oscillators, and that hub nodes can actively drive remote synchronization even in the presence of a repulsive mean field. We apply this model to study the synchronization dynamics in complex networks endowed with hub-nodes, an ubiquitous feature of many natural networks. We show that a change in the natural frequency of a hub can alone reshape synchronization patterns, and switch from direct to remote synchronization, or to hub-driven desynchronization. We discuss the potential role of this phenomenon in real-world networks, including the Karate-club and brain connectivity networks.

9Collective Almost Synchronization In Complex Networks

By

This work introduces the phenomenon of Collective Almost Synchronization (CAS), which describes a universal way of how patterns can appear in complex networks even for small coupling strengths. The CAS phenomenon appears due to the existence of an approximately constant local mean field and is characterized by having nodes with trajectories evolving around periodic stable orbits. Common notion based on statistical knowledge would lead one to interpret the appearance of a local constant mean field as a consequence of the fact that the behavior of each node is not correlated to the behaviors of the others. Contrary to this common notion, we show that various well known weaker forms of synchronization (almost, time-lag, phase synchronization, and generalized synchronization) appear as a result of the onset of an almost constant local mean field. If the memory is formed in a brain by minimising the coupling strength among neurons and maximising the number of possible patterns, then the CAS phenomenon is a plausible explanation for it.

10Optimizing Synchronization Stability Of The Kuramoto Model In Complex Networks And Power Grids

By

Maintaining the stability of synchronization state is crucial for the functioning of many natural and artificial systems. In this study, we develop methods to optimize the synchronization stability of the Kuramoto model by minimizing the dominant Lyapunov exponent. With the help of the recently proposed cut-set space approximation of the steady states, we greatly simplify the objective function, and further derive its gradient and Hessian with respect to natural frequencies, which leads to an efficient algorithm with the quasi-Newton's method. The optimized systems are demonstrated to achieve better synchronization stability for the Kuramoto model with or without inertia in certain regimes. Hence our method is applicable in improving the stability of power grids. It is also viable to adjust the coupling strength of each link to improve the stability of the system. Various operational constraints can also be easily integrated into our scope by employing the interior point method in convex optimization. The properties of the optimized networks are also discussed.

11Conservative Model For Synchronization Problems In Complex Networks

By

In this paper we study the scaling behavior of the interface fluctuations (roughness) for a discrete model with conservative noise on complex networks. Conservative noise is a noise which has no external flux of deposition on the surface and the whole process is due to the diffusion. It was found that in Euclidean lattices the roughness of the steady state $W_s$ does not depend on the system size. Here, we find that for Scale-Free networks of $N$ nodes, characterized by a degree distribution $P(k)\sim k^{-\lambda}$, $W_s$ is independent of $N$ for any $\lambda$. This behavior is very different than the one found by Pastore y Piontti {\it et. al} [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 76}, 046117 (2007)] for a discrete model with non-conservative noise, that implies an external flux, where $W_s \sim \ln N$ for $\lambda < 3$, and was explained by non-linear terms in the analytical evolution equation for the interface [La Rocca {\it et. al}, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 77}, 046120 (2008)]. In this work we show that in this processes with conservative noise the non-linear terms are not relevant to describe the scaling behavior of $W_s$.

12Consistency Of Heterogeneous Synchronization Patterns In Complex Weighted Networks

By

We show that subsets of interacting oscillators may synchronize in different ways within a single network. This diversity of synchronization patterns is promoted by increasing the heterogeneous distribution of coupling weights and/or asymmetries in small networks. We also analyze consistency, defined as the persistence of coexistent synchronization patterns regardless of the initial conditions. Our results show that complex weighted networks display richer consistency than regular networks, suggesting why certain functional network topologies are often constructed when experimental data are analyzed.

We present an extended analysis, based on the dynamics towards synchronization of a system of coupled oscillators, of the hierarchy of communities in complex networks. In the synchronization process, different structures corresponding to well defined communities of nodes appear in a hierarchical way. The analysis also provides a useful connection between synchronization dynamics, complex networks topology and spectral graph analysis.

14Enhancing Synchronization In Complex Networks Of Coupled Phase Oscillators

By

By a model of coupled phase oscillators, we show analytically how synchronization in {\em non-identical} complex networks can be enhanced by introducing a proper gradient into the couplings. It is found that, by pointing the gradient from the large-degree to the small-degree nodes on each link, increasing the gradient strength will bring forward the {\em onset} of network synchronization monotonically, and, under the same gradient strength, heterogeneous networks are more synchronizable than homogeneous networks. These findings are verified by extensive simulations.

15Sparse Repulsive Coupling Enhances Synchronization In Complex Networks

By

Through the last years, different strategies to enhance synchronization in complex networks have been proposed. In this Letter, we show that the synchronization in a small-world network of attractively coupled non-identical neurons is strongly improved by adding a tiny fraction of phase-repulsive couplings. By a purely topological analysis that does not depend on the dynamical model, we link the emerging dynamical behavior to the structural properties of the sparsely coupled repulsive network.

16Loss Of Synchronization In Complex Neuronal Networks With Delay

By

We investigate the stability of synchronization in networks of delay-coupled excitable neural oscillators. On the basis of the master stability function formalism, we demonstrate that synchronization is always stable for excitatory coupling independently of the delay and coupling strength. Superimposing inhibitory links randomly on top of a regular ring of excitatory coupling, which yields a small-world-like network topology, we find a phase transition to desynchronization as the probability of inhibitory links exceeds a critical value. We explore the scaling of the critical value in dependence on network properties. Compared to random networks, we find that small-world topologies are more susceptible to desynchronization via inhibition.

17Modular Synchronization In Complex Networks With A Gauge Kuramoto Model

By

We modify the Kuramoto model for synchronization on complex networks by introducing a gauge term that depends on the edge betweenness centrality (BC). The gauge term introduces additional phase difference between two vertices from 0 to $\pi$ as the BC on the edge between them increases from the minimum to the maximum in the network. When the network has a modular structure, the model generates the phase synchronization within each module, however, not over the entire system. Based on this feature, we can distinguish modules in complex networks, with relatively little computational time of $\mathcal{O}(NL)$, where $N$ and $L$ are the number of vertices and edges in the system, respectively. We also examine the synchronization of the modified Kuramoto model and compare it with that of the original Kuramoto model in several complex networks.

18Synchronization Interfaces And Overlapping Communities In Complex Networks

By

We show that a complex network of phase oscillators may display interfaces between domains (clusters) of synchronized oscillations. The emergence and dynamics of these interfaces are studied in the general framework of interacting phase oscillators composed of either dynamical domains (influenced by different forcing processes), or structural domains (modular networks). The obtained results allow to give a functional definition of overlapping structures in modular networks, and suggest a practical method to identify them. As a result, our algorithm could detect information on both single overlapping nodes and overlapping clusters.

19Synchronization Versus Neighborhood Similarity In Complex Networks Of Non-identical Oscillators

By

Does the assignment order of a fixed collection of slightly distinct subsystems into given communication channels influence the overall ensemble behavior? We discuss this question in the context of complex networks of non-identical interacting oscillators. Three connection configurations found in Nature are considered here: Similar, Dissimilar and Neutral patterns. These strategies correspond respectively to oscillators alike, distinct and indifferent relate to its neighbors. To construct such scenarios we define a vertex weighted graph measure, the Total Dissonance, which comprises the sum of the dissonances between all neighbor oscillators in the network. Our numerical simulations show that the more homogeneous is a network, the higher tend to be both the coupling strength required to phase-locking and the associated final phase configuration spread over the circle. On the other hand, the initial spread of partial synchronization occurs faster for Similar patterns in comparison to Dissimilar ones, while neutral patterns are an intermediate situation between both extremes.

20Explosive Transitions In Complex Networks' Structure And Dynamics: Percolation And Synchronization

By

Percolation and synchronization are two phase transitions that have been extensively studied since already long ago. A classic result is that, in the vast majority of cases, these transitions are of the second-order type, i.e. continuous and reversible. Recently, however, explosive phenomena have been reported in com- plex networks' structure and dynamics, which rather remind first-order (discontinuous and irreversible) transitions. Explosive percolation, which was discovered in 2009, corresponds to an abrupt change in the network's structure, and explosive synchronization (which is concerned, instead, with the abrupt emergence of a collective state in the networks' dynamics) was studied as early as the first models of globally coupled phase oscillators were taken into consideration. The two phenomena have stimulated investigations and de- bates, attracting attention in many relevant fields. So far, various substantial contributions and progresses (including experimental verifications) have been made, which have provided insights on what structural and dynamical properties are needed for inducing such abrupt transformations, as well as have greatly enhanced our understanding of phase transitions in networked systems. Our intention is to offer here a monographic review on the main-stream literature, with the twofold aim of summarizing the existing results and pointing out possible directions for future research.

21Onset Of Synchronization In Weighted Complex Networks: The Effect Of Weight-Degree Correlation

By

By numerical simulations, we investigate the onset of synchronization of networked phase oscillators under two different weighting schemes. In scheme-I, the link weights are correlated to the product of the degrees of the connected nodes, so this kind of networks is named as the weight-degree correlated (WDC) network. In scheme-II, the link weights are randomly assigned to each link regardless of the node degrees, so this kind of networks is named as the weight-degree uncorrelated (WDU) network. Interestingly, it is found that by increasing a parameter that governs the weight distribution, the onset of synchronization in WDC network is monotonically enhanced, while in WDU network there is a reverse in the synchronization performance. We investigate this phenomenon from the viewpoint of gradient network, and explain the contrary roles of coupling gradient on network synchronization: gradient promotes synchronization in WDC network, while deteriorates synchronization in WDU network. The findings highlight the fact that, besides the link weight, the correlation between the weight and node degree is also important to the network dynamics.

22Robustness To Noise In Synchronization Of Complex Networks.

By

This article is from Scientific Reports , volume 3 . Abstract In this report, we investigate dynamical robustness of a complex network to noise injected through one of its nodes. We focus on synchronization of coupled nonlinear systems and, as a special instance, we address the classical consensus protocol for linear integrators. We establish an exact closed-form expression of the synchronization error for the consensus protocol and an approximate result for chaotic units. While structural robustness is known to be significantly affected by attacks targeted to network hubs, our results posit that dynamical robustness is controlled by both the topology of the network and the dynamics of the units. We provide examples where hubs perform better or worse than isolated nodes.

23Synchronization In Weighted Uncorrelated Complex Networks In A Noisy Environment: Optimization And Connections With Transport Efficiency

By

Motivated by synchronization problems in noisy environments, we study the Edwards-Wilkinson process on weighted uncorrelated scale-free networks. We consider a specific form of the weights, where the strength (and the associated cost) of a link is proportional to $(k_{i}k_{j})^{\beta}$ with $k_{i}$ and $k_{j}$ being the degrees of the nodes connected by the link. Subject to the constraint that the total network cost is fixed, we find that in the mean-field approximation on uncorrelated scale-free graphs, synchronization is optimal at $\beta^{*}$$=$-1. Numerical results, based on exact numerical diagonalization of the corresponding network Laplacian, confirm the mean-field results, with small corrections to the optimal value of $\beta^{*}$. Employing our recent connections between the Edwards-Wilkinson process and resistor networks, and some well-known connections between random walks and resistor networks, we also pursue a naturally related problem of optimizing performance in queue-limited communication networks utilizing local weighted routing schemes.

24Speed Of Synchronization In Complex Networks Of Neural Oscillators Analytic Results Based On Random Matrix Theory

By

We analyze the dynamics of networks of spiking neural oscillators. First, we present an exact linear stability theory of the synchronous state for networks of arbitrary connectivity. For general neuron rise functions, stability is determined by multiple operators, for which standard analysis is not suitable. We describe a general non-standard solution to the multi-operator problem. Subsequently, we derive a class of rise functions for which all stability operators become degenerate and standard eigenvalue analysis becomes a suitable tool. Interestingly, this class is found to consist of networks of leaky integrate and fire neurons. For random networks of inhibitory integrate-and-fire neurons, we then develop an analytical approach, based on the theory of random matrices, to precisely determine the eigenvalue distribution. This yields the asymptotic relaxation time for perturbations to the synchronous state which provides the characteristic time scale on which neurons can coordinate their activity in such networks. For networks with finite in-degree, i.e. finite number of presynaptic inputs per neuron, we find a speed limit to coordinating spiking activity: Even with arbitrarily strong interaction strengths neurons cannot synchronize faster than at a certain maximal speed determined by the typical in-degree.

25Synchronization And Modularity In Complex Networks

By

We investigate the connection between the dynamics of synchronization and the modularity on complex networks. Simulating the Kuramoto's model in complex networks we determine patterns of meta-stability and calculate the modularity of the partition these patterns provide. The results indicate that the more stable the patterns are, the larger tends to be the modularity of the partition defined by them. This correlation works pretty well in homogeneous networks (all nodes have similar connectivity) but fails when networks contain hubs, mainly because the modularity is never improved where isolated nodes appear, whereas in the synchronization process the characteristic of hubs is to have a large stability when forming its own community.

27Generalized Synchronization In Mutually Coupled Oscillators And Complex Networks

By

We introduce a novel concept of generalized synchronization, able to encompass the setting of collective synchronized behavior for mutually coupled systems and networking systems featuring complex topologies in their connections. The onset of the synchronous regime is confirmed by the dependence of the system's Lyapunov exponents on the coupling parameter. The presence of a generalized synchronization regime is verified by means of the nearest neighbor method.

28Exploring Synchronization In Complex Oscillator Networks

By

The emergence of synchronization in a network of coupled oscillators is a pervasive topic in various scientific disciplines ranging from biology, physics, and chemistry to social networks and engineering applications. A coupled oscillator network is characterized by a population of heterogeneous oscillators and a graph describing the interaction among the oscillators. These two ingredients give rise to a rich dynamic behavior that keeps on fascinating the scientific community. In this article, we present a tutorial introduction to coupled oscillator networks, we review the vast literature on theory and applications, and we present a collection of different synchronization notions, conditions, and analysis approaches. We focus on the canonical phase oscillator models occurring in countless real-world synchronization phenomena, and present their rich phenomenology. We review a set of applications relevant to control scientists. We explore different approaches to phase and frequency synchronization, and we present a collection of synchronization conditions and performance estimates. For all results we present self-contained proofs that illustrate a sample of different analysis methods in a tutorial style.

29Cluster Explosive Synchronization In Complex Networks

By

The emergence of explosive synchronization has been reported as an abrupt transition in complex networks of first-order Kuramoto oscillators. In this Letter, we demonstrate that the nodes in a second-order Kuramoto model, perform a cascade of transitions toward a synchronous macroscopic state, which is a novel phenomenon that we call \textit{cluster explosive synchronization}. We provide a rigorous analytical treatment using a mean-field analysis in uncorrelated networks. Our findings are in good agreement with numerical simulations and fundamentally deepen the understanding of microscopic mechanisms toward synchronization.

30Onset Of Synchronization In Complex Networks Of Noisy Oscillators

By

We study networks of noisy phase oscillators whose nodes are characterized by a random degree counting the number of its connections. Both these degrees and the natural frequencies of the oscillators are distributed according to a given probability density. Replacing the randomly connected network by an all-to-all coupled network with weighted edges, allows us to formulate the dynamics of a single oscillator coupled to the mean field and to derive the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation. From the latter we calculate the critical coupling strength for the onset of synchronization as a function of the noise intensity, the frequency distribution and the first two moments of the degree distribution. Our approach is applied to a dense small-world network model, for which we calculate the degree distribution. Numerical simulations prove the validity of the made replacement. We also test the applicability to more sparsely connected networks and formulate homogeneity and absence of correlations in the degree distribution as limiting factors of our approach.

31Synchronization Centrality And Explosive Synchronization In Complex Networks

By

Synchronization of networked oscillators is known to depend fundamentally on the interplay between the dynamics of the graph's units and the microscopic arrangement of the network's structure. For non identical elements, the lack of quantitative tools has hampered so far a systematic study of the mechanisms behind such a collective behavior. We here propose an effective network whose topological properties reflect the interplay between the topology and dynamics of the original network. On that basis, we are able to introduce the "synchronization centrality", a measure which quantifies the role and importance of each network's node in the synchronization process. In particular, we use such a measure to assess the propensity of a graph to synchronize explosively, thus indicating a unified framework for most of the different models proposed so far for such an irreversible transition. Taking advantage of the predicting power of this measure, we furthermore discuss a strategy to induce the explosive behavior in a generic network, by acting only upon a small fraction of its nodes.

32Synchronization Reveals Topological Scales In Complex Networks

By

We study the relationship between topological scales and dynamic time scales in complex networks. The analysis is based on the full dynamics towards synchronization of a system of coupled oscillators. In the synchronization process, modular structures corresponding to well defined communities of nodes emerge in different time scales, ordered in a hierarchical way. The analysis also provides a useful connection between synchronization dynamics, complex networks topology and spectral graph analysis.

33Enhancing Synchronization By Directionality In Complex Networks

By

We proposed a method called residual edge-betweenness gradient (REBG) to enhance synchronizability of networks by assignment of link direction while keeping network topology and link weight unchanged. Direction assignment has been shown to improve the synchronizability of undirected networks in general, but we find that in some cases incommunicable components emerge and networks fail to synchronize. We show that the REBG method can effectively avoid the synchronization failure ($R=\lambda_{2}^{r}/\lambda_{N}^{r}=0$) which occurs in the residual degree gradient (RDG) method proposed in Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 228702 (2009). Further experiments show that REBG method enhance synchronizability in networks with community structure as compared with the RDG method.

35Inducing Chimera-synchronization In Symmetric Complex Networks

By

In a recent study of chaos synchronization in symmetric complex networks [Pecora \textit{et al}., Nat. Commun. {\bf 5}, 4079 (2014)], it is found that stable synchronous clusters may coexist with many non-synchronous nodes in the asynchronous regime, resembling the chimera state observed in regular networks of non-locally coupled periodic oscillators. Although of practical significance, this new type of state, namely the chimera-synchronization state, is hardly generated for the general complex networks, due to either the topological instabilities or the weak coupling strength. Here, based on the strategy of pinning coupling, we propose an effective method for inducing chimera-synchronization in symmetric complex network of coupled chaotic oscillators. We are able to argue mathematically that, by pinning a group of nodes satisfying permutation symmetry, there always exits a critical pinning strength beyond which the unstable chimera-synchronization states can be successfully induced. The feasibility and efficiency of the control method are verified by numerical simulations of both artificial and real-world complex networks, with the numerical results well fitted by the theoretical predictions.

36Complete Characterization Of Stability Of Cluster Synchronization In Complex Dynamical Networks

By

Synchronization is an important and prevalent phenomenon in natural and engineered systems. In many dynamical networks, the coupling is balanced or adjusted in order to admit global synchronization, a condition called Laplacian coupling. Many networks exhibit incomplete synchronization, where two or more clusters of synchronization persist, and computational group theory has recently proved to be valuable in discovering these cluster states based upon the topology of the network. In the important case of Laplacian coupling, additional synchronization patterns can exist that would not be predicted from the group theory analysis alone. The understanding of how and when clusters form, merge, and persist is essential for understanding collective dynamics, synchronization, and failure mechanisms of complex networks such as electric power grids, distributed control networks, and autonomous swarming vehicles. We describe here a method to find and analyze all of the possible cluster synchronization patterns in a Laplacian-coupled network, by applying methods of computational group theory to dynamically-equivalent networks. We present a general technique to evaluate the stability of each of the dynamically valid cluster synchronization patterns. Our results are validated in an electro-optic experiment on a 5 node network that confirms the synchronization patterns predicted by the theory.

37Remote Synchronization In Complex Networks

By

We show the existence of a novel dynamical state called remote synchronization in general networks of coupled oscillators. This state is characterized by the synchronization of pairs of nodes that are not directly connected via a physical link or any sequence of synchronized nodes. This phenomenon cannot be observed in networks of phase oscillators as its underlying mechanism is the modulation of the amplitude of those intermediary nodes between the remotely synchronized units. Our findings thus show the ubiquity and robustness of these states and bridge the gap from their recent observation in simple toy graphs to complex networks.

38Analysis Of Cluster Explosive Synchronization In Complex Networks

By

Correlations between intrinsic dynamics and local topology have become a new trend in the study of synchronization in complex networks. In this paper, we investigate in this paradigm the influence of topology on dynamics of networks made up of second-order Kuramoto oscillators. In particular, based on mean-field calculations, we provide a detailed investigation of the recently reported phenomena of cluster explosive synchronization (CES)[Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 218701 (2013)], analysing the model in scale-free and small-world networks as a function of several topological properties. We show that, in contrast to scale-free networks, the transition to the synchronous state in small-world structures tends to be continuous as the probability of rewiring increases. These results complement the previous findings regarding CES and also fundamentally deepen the understanding of the interplay between topology and dynamics under the constraint of correlating natural frequencies and local structure.
