2Amalgamated Free Products Of $w$-Rigid Factors And Calculation Of Their Symmetry Groups

By

We consider amalgamated free product II$_1$ factors $M = M_1 *_B M_2 *_B ...$ and use ``deformation/rigidity'' and ``intertwining'' techniques to prove that any relatively rigid von Neumann subalgebra $Q\subset M$ can be intertwined into one of the $M_i$'s. We apply this to the case $M_i$ are w-rigid II$_1$ factors, with $B$ equal to either $\Bbb C$, to a Cartan subalgebra $A$ in $M_i$, or to a regular hyperfinite II$_1$ subfactor $R$ in $M_i$, to obtain the following type of unique decomposition results, \`a la Bass-Serre: If $M = (N_1 *_C N_2 *_C ...)^t$, for some $t>0$ and some other similar inclusions of algebras $C\subset N_j$ then, after a permutation of indices, $(B\subset M_i)$ is inner conjugate to $(C\subset N_i)^t$, $\forall i$. Taking $B=\Bbb C$ and $M_i = (L(\Bbb Z^2 \rtimes \Bbb F_{2}))^{t_i}$, with $\{t_i\}_{i\geq 1}=S$ a given countable subgroup of $\Bbb R_+^*$, we obtain continuously many non stably isomorphic factors $M$ with fundamental group $\mycal F(M)$ equal to $S$. For $B=A$, we obtain a new class of factors $M$ with unique Cartan subalgebra decomposition, with a large subclass satisfying $\mycal F(M)=\{1\}$ and Out$(M)$ abelian and calculable. Taking $B=R$, we get examples of factors with $\mycal F(M)=\{1\}$, Out$(M)=K$, for any given separable compact abelian group $K$.

3Lie Group Structures On Symmetry Groups Of Principal Bundles

By

In this paper we describe how one can obtain Lie group structures on the group of (vertical) bundle automorphisms for a locally convex principal bundle P over the compact manifold M. This is done by first considering Lie group structures on the group of vertical bundle automorphisms Gau(P). Then the full automorphism group Aut(P) is considered as an extension of the open subgroup Diff(M)_P of diffeomorphisms of M preserving the equivalence class of P under pull-backs, by the gauge group Gau(P). We derive explicit conditions for the extensions of these Lie group structures, show the smoothness of some natural actions and relate our results to affine Kac--Moody algebras and groups.

4Symmetry And Inverse Closedness For Some Banach $^ *$-Algebras Associated To Discrete Groups

By

A discrete group $\G$ is called rigidly symmetric if for every $C^*$-algebra $\A$ the projective tensor product $\ell^1(\G)\widehat\otimes\A$ is a symmetric Banach $^*$-algebra. For such a group we show that the twisted crossed product $\ell^1_{\alpha,\o}(\G;\A)$ is also a symmetric Banach $^*$-algebra, for every twisted action $(\alpha,\o)$ of $\G$ in a $C^*$-algebra $\A$\,. We extend this property to other types of decay, replacing the $\ell^1$-condition. We also make the connection with certain classes of twisted kernels, used in a theory of integral operators involving group $2$-cocycles. The algebra of these kernels is studied, both in intrinsic and in represented version.

5CP Symmetry And Lepton Mixing From A Scan Of Finite Discrete Groups

By

Including the generalized CP symmetry, we have performed a comprehensive scan of leptonic mixing patterns which can be obtained from finite discrete groups with order less than 2000. Both the semidirect approach and its variant are considered. The lepton mixing matrices which can admit a good agreement with experimental data can be organized into eight different categories up to possible row and column permutations. These viable mixing patterns can be completely obtained from the discrete flavor groups $\Delta(6n^2)$, $D^{(1)}_{9n,3n}$, $A_5$ and $\Sigma(168)$ combined with CP symmetry. We perform a detailed analytical and numerical analysis for each possible mixing pattern. The resulting predictions for lepton mixing parameter, neutrinoless double decay and flavored leptogenesis are studied.

6The Index Of Symmetry Of Three-dimensional Lie Groups With A Left-invariant Metric

By

We determine the index of symmetry of 3-dimensional unimodular Lie groups with a left-invariant metric. In particular, we prove that every 3-dimensional unimodular Lie group admits a left-invariant metric with positive index of symmetry. We also study the geometry of the quotients by the so-called foliation of symmetry, and we explain in what cases the group fibers over a 2-dimensional space of constant curvature.

7Reversing Symmetry Groups Of Cat Maps

By

Toral automorphisms are widely used (discrete) dynamical systems, the perhaps most prominent example (in 2D) being Arnold's cat map. Given such an automorphism M, its symmetries (i.e. all automorphisms that commute with M) and reversing symmetries (i.e. all automorphisms that conjugate M into its inverse) can be determined by means of number theoretic tools. Here, the case of GL(2,Z) is presented and the possible (reversing) symmetry groups are completely classified. Extensions to affine mappings and to k-(reversing) symmetries (i.e. (reversing) symmetries of the k-th power of M), and applications to the projective group PGL(2,Z) and to trace maps (compare math.DS/9901124), are briefly discussed.

8Asymptotic Symmetry Groups Of Long-Ranged Gauge Configurations

By

We make some general remarks on long-ranged configurations in gauge or diffeomorphism invariant theories where the fields are allowed to assume some non vanishing values at spatial infinity. In this case the Gauss constraint only eliminates those gauge degrees of freedom which lie in the connected component of asymptotically trivial gauge transformations. This implies that proper physical symmetries arise either from gauge transformations that reach to infinity or those that are asymptotically trivial but do not lie in the connected component of transformations within that class. The latter transformations form a discrete subgroup of all symmetries whose position in the ambient group has proven to have interesting implications. We explain this for the dyon configuration in the $SO(3)$ Yang-Mills-Higgs theory, where we prove that the asymptotic symmetry group is $Z_{|m|}\times \Re$ where $m$ is the monopole number. We also discuss the application of the general setting to general relativity and show that here the only implication of discrete symmetries for the continuous part is a possible extension of the rotation group $SO(3)$ to $SU(2)$.

10Vortices, Circumfluence, Symmetry Groups And Darboux Transformations Of The Euler Equations

By

The Euler equation (EE) is one of the basic equations in many physical fields such as the fluids, plasmas, condense matters, astrophysics, oceanic and atmospheric dynamics. A new symmetry group theorem of the two dimensional EE is obtained via a simple direct method and the theorem is used to find \em exact analytical \rm vortex and circumfluence solutions. Some types of Darboux transformations (DTs) for the both two and three dimensional EEs are obtained for \em arbitrary spectral parameters \rm which indicates that the EEs are integrable and the Navier-Stockes (NS) equations with large Renoyed number are nearly integrable, i.e, they are singular perturbations of the integrable EEs. The possibility of the vortex and circumfluence solutions to approximately explain the tropical cyclones (TCs), especially, the Hurricane Andrew 1992, is discussed.

13Broken Relativistic Symmetry Groups, Toroidal Moments And Superconductivity In Magnetoelectric Crystals

By

A connection between creation of toroidal moments and breaking of the relativistic crystalline group associated to a given crystal, is presented in this paper. Indeed, if magnetoelectric effects exist, the interaction between electrons and elementary magnetic cells appears in such a way that the resulting local polarization and magnetization break the local relativistic crystalline symmetry. Therefore, Goldstone bosons, also associated to toroidal moments, are created and, as a consequence, corresponding toroidal phases in crystals. The list of the Shubnikov groups compatible with this kind of phases is given and possible consequences in superconductor theory in magnetoelectric crystals are examined.

14Arithmetic Group Symmetry And Finiteness Properties Of Torelli Groups

By

We examine groups whose resonance varieties, characteristic varieties and Sigma-invariants have a natural arithmetic group symmetry, and we explore implications on various finiteness properties of subgroups. We compute resonance varieties, characteristic varieties and Alexander polynomials of Torelli groups, and we show that all subgroups containing the Johnson kernel have finite first Betti number, when the genus is at least four. We also prove that, in this range, the $I$-adic completion of the Alexander invariant is finite-dimensional, and the Kahler property for the Torelli group implies the finite generation of the Johnson kernel.

17Parameter Estimation In Spherical Symmetry Groups

By

This paper considers statistical estimation problems where the probability distribution of the observed random variable is invariant with respect to actions of a finite topological group. It is shown that any such distribution must satisfy a restricted finite mixture representation. When specialized to the case of distributions over the sphere that are invariant to the actions of a finite spherical symmetry group $\mathcal G$, a group-invariant extension of the Von Mises Fisher (VMF) distribution is obtained. The $\mathcal G$-invariant VMF is parameterized by location and scale parameters that specify the distribution's mean orientation and its concentration about the mean, respectively. Using the restricted finite mixture representation these parameters can be estimated using an Expectation Maximization (EM) maximum likelihood (ML) estimation algorithm. This is illustrated for the problem of mean crystal orientation estimation under the spherically symmetric group associated with the crystal form, e.g., cubic or octahedral or hexahedral. Simulations and experiments establish the advantages of the extended VMF EM-ML estimator for data acquired by Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) microscopy of a polycrystalline Nickel alloy sample.

18Open Strings And Their Symmetry Groups

By

Much of the recent progress in String Theory can be traced to a precise strategy: a careful study of the few models known since the beginnings of the subject, and the abstraction from them of basic properties that one would like to demand from other models. This could be termed a set of "model-building rules". The approach corresponds to the fact, often a source of embarrassment to specialists, that String Theory, born as a set of rules rather than as a set of principles, has long resisted attempts to reduce it to a logically satisfying structure. Talk presented at the Cargese Summer Institute on Non-Perturbative Methods in Field Theory, Cargese, France, July 16-30, 1987.

20DTIC ADA615420: Symmetry- And Solvent-Dependent Photophysics Of Fluorenes Containing Donor And Acceptor Groups (Postprint)

By

Three two-photon absorption (2PA) dyes (donor-pi-donor DPA2F), donor-pi-donor acceptor (AF240), and acceptor-pi-acceptor (BT2F); specifically, D is Ph2N-, A is 2-benzothiazoyl, and the pi-linker is 9,9-diethylfluorene) are examined in a variety of aprotic solvents. Because the 2PA cross section is sensitive to the polarity of the local environment, this report examines the solvent-dependent linear photophysics of the dyes, which are important to understand before probing more complex solid-state systems. The symmetrical dyes show little solvent dependence; however, AF240 has significant solvatochromism observed in the fluorescence spectra and lifetimes and also the transient absorption spectra. A 114 nm bathochromic shift is observed in the fluorescence maximum when going from n-hexane to acetonitrile, whereas the lifetimes increase from 1.25 to 3.12 ns. The excited-state dipole moment for AF240 is found to be 20.1 D using the Lippert equation, with smaller values observed for the symmetrical dyes. Additionally, the femtosecond transient absorption (TA) spectra at time zero show little solvent dependence for DPA2F or BT2F, but AF240 shows a 52 nm hypsochromic shift from n-hexane to acetonitrile. Coupled with the solvatochromism in the fluorescence and large excited-state dipole moment, this is attributed to formation of an intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) state in polar solvents. By 10 ps in AF240, the maximum TA in acetonitrile has shifted 30 nm, providing direct evidence of a solvent-stabilized ICT state, whose formation occurs in 0.85-2.71 ps, depending on solvent. However, AF240 in nonpolar solvents and the symmetrical dyes in all solvents show essentially no shifts due to a predominantly locally excited (LE) state. Preliminary temperature-dependent fluorescence using frozen glass media supports significant solvent reorganization around the AF240 excited state in polar solvents.

21Finite Symmetry Groups In Complex Geometry

By

On June 5, 2007 the second author delivered a talk at the Journees de l'Institut Elie Cartan entitled "Finite symmetry groups in complex geometry". This paper begins with an expanded version of that talk which, in the spirit of the Journees, is intended for a wide audience. The later paragraphs are devoted both to the exposition of basic methods, in particular an equivariant minimal model program for surfaces, as well as an outline of recent work of the authors on the classification of K3-surfaces with special symmetry.

22On Isometry Groups And Maximal Symmetry

By

We study problems of maximal symmetry in Banach spaces. This is done by providing an analysis of the structure of small subgroups of the general linear group GL(X), where X is a separable reflexive Banach space. In particular, we provide the first known example of a Banach space X without any equivalent maximal norm, or equivalently such that GL(X) contains no maximal bounded subgroup. Moreover, this space X may be chosen to be super-reflexive.

23Symmetry Groups Of Four-manifolds

By

If a (possibly finite) compact Lie group acts effectively, locally linearly, and homologically trivially on a closed, simply-connected four-manifold with second Betti number at least three, then it must be isomorphic to a subgroup of S^1 x S^1, and the action must have nonempty fixed-point set. Our results strengthen and complement recent work by Edmonds, Hambleton and Lee, and Wilczynski, among others. Our tools include representation theory, finite group theory, and Borel equivariant cohomology.

24Orthogonal Bases Of Brauer Symmetry Classes Of Tensors For Groups Having Cyclic Support On Non-linear Brauer Characters

By

This paper provides some properties of Brauer symmetry classes of tensors. We derive a dimension formula for the orbital subspaces in the Brauer symmetry classes of tensors corresponding to the irreducible Brauer characters of the groups having cyclic groups support on non-linear Brauer characters. Using the derived formula, we investigate the necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the o-basis of Dicyclic groups, Semi-dihedral groups and also reinvestigate those things on Dihedral groups. Some criteria for the non-vanishing elements in the Brauer symmetry classes of tensors associated to those groups are also included.

25Symmetry Classes Of Tensors And Semi-direct Product Of Finite Abelian Groups

By

In the study of symmetry classes of tensors, finding examples of symmetry classes of tensors that possess an o*-basis is of considerable interest. There are only few classes of groups that have been provided a necessary and sufficient condition for having such a basis. There is no general criterion for any finite groups yet. In this note, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of o*-basis of symmetry classes of tensors associated with semi-direct product of some finite abelian groups and, consequently, their wreath product.

26Symmetry Breaking For Orthogonal Groups And A Conjecture By B. Gross And D. Prasad

We consider irreducible unitary representations $A_i$ of G=SO(n+1,1) with the same infinitesimal character as the trivial representation and representations $B_j$ of H=SO(n,1) with the same properties and discuss H-equivariant homomorphisms Hom_H($A_i,B_j$). 28Some Restrictions On Symmetry Groups Of Axially Symmetric Spacetimes

By

Lie transformation groups containing a one-dimensional subgroup acting cyclically on a manifold are considered. The structure of the group is found to be considerably restricted by the existence of a one-dimensional subgroup whose orbits are circles. The results proved do not depend on the dimension of the manifold nor on the existence of a metric, but merely on the fact that the Lie group acts globally on the manifold. Firstly some results for the general case of an $m+1$-dimensional Lie group are derived: those commutators of the associated Lie algebra involving the generator of the cyclic subgroup, $X_0$ say, are severely restricted and, in a suitably chosen basis, take a simple form. The Jacobi identities involving $X_0$ are then applied to show there are further restrictions on the structure of the Lie algebra. All Lie algebras of dimensions 2 and 3 compatible with cyclic symmetry are obtained. In the two-dimensional case the group must be Abelian. For the three-dimensional case, the Bianchi type of the Lie algebra must be I, II, III, VII$_0$, VIII or IX and furthermore in all cases the vector $X_0$ forms part of a basis in which the algebra takes its canonical form. Finally four-dimensional Lie algebras compatible with cyclic symmetry are considered and the results are related to the Petrov-Kruchkovich classification of all four-dimensional Lie algebras.

29Variable Coefficient Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations With Four-dimensional Symmetry Groups And Analysis Of Their Solutions

By

Analytical solutions of variable coefficient nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations having four-dimensional symmetry groups which are in fact the next closest to the integrable ones occurring only when the Lie symmetry group is five-dimensional are obtained using two different tools. The first tool is to use one dimensional subgroups of the full symmetry group to generate solutions from those of the reduced ODEs (Ordinary Differential Equations), namely group invariant solutions. The other is by truncation in their Painlev\'e expansions.

33DTIC ADA198952: Plane Symmetry Groups

By

Plane symmetry groups are a classification system for describing the symmetry of two dimensional figures and patterns. This paper presents the basic mathematical theory behind plane symmetry groups. This theory is then applied in classifying the symmetry of bounded figures, frieze patterns and wall paper patterns. Recently developed algorithms are included to help analyze complex designs. Over 100 examples are presented in the next to clarify concepts and to illustrate the various symmetry types.

34Highlights Of Symmetry Groups

By

The concepts of symmetry and symmetry groups are at the heart of several developments in modern theoretical and mathematical physics. The present paper is devoted to a number of selected topics within this framework: Euclidean and rotation groups; the properties of fullerenes in physical chemistry; Galilei, Lorentz and Poincare groups; conformal transformations and the Laplace equation; quantum groups and Sklyanin algebras. For example, graphite can be vaporized by laser irradiation, producing a remarkably stable cluster consisting of 60 carbon atoms. The corresponding theoretical model considers a truncated icosahedron, i.e. a polygon with 60 vertices and 32 faces, 12 of which are pentagonal and 20 hexagonal. The Carbon 60 molecule obtained when a carbon atom is placed at each vertex of this structure has all valences satisfied by two single bonds and one double bond. In other words, a structure in which a pentagon is completely surrounded by hexagons is stable. Thus, a cage in which all 12 pentagons are completely surrounded by hexagons has optimum stability. On a more formal side, the exactly solvable models of quantum and statistical physics can be studied with the help of the quantum inverse problem method. The problem of enumerating the discrete quantum systems which can be solved by the quantum inverse problem method reduces to the problem of enumerating the operator-valued functions that satisfy an equation involving a fixed solution of the quantum Yang--Baxter equation. Two basic equations exist which provide a systematic procedure for obtaining completely integrable lattice approximations to various continuous completely integrable systems. This analysis leads in turn to the discovery of Sklyanin algebras.

35Rotating Dust Solutions Of Einstein's Equations With 3-dimensional Symmetry Groups; Part 1: Two Killing Fields Spanned On U^α And W^{α}

By

For a rotating dust with a 3-dimensional symmetry group all possible metric forms can be classified and, within each class, explicitly written out. This is made possible by the formalism of Pleba\'nski based on the Darboux theorem. In the resulting coordinates, the Killing vector fields (if any exist) assume a special form. Each Killing vector field may be either spanned on the fields of velocity and rotation or linearly independent of them. By considering all such cases one arrives at the classification. With respect to the structures of the groups, this is just the Bianchi classification, but with all possible orientations of the orbits taken into account. In this paper, which is part 1 of a 3-part series, all solutions are considered for which two Killing fields are spanned on velocity and rotation. The solutions of Lanczos and G\"{o}del are identified as special cases, and their new invariant definitions are provided. In addition, a new invariant definition is given of the Ozsvath class III solution.

37Universal Volume Of Groups And Anomaly Of Vogel's Symmetry

By

We show that integral representation of universal volume function of compact simple Lie groups gives rise to six analytic functions on $CP^2$, which transform as two triplets under group of permutations of Vogel's projective parameters. This substitutes expected invariance under permutations of universal parameters by more complicated covariance. We provide an analytical continuation of these functions and particularly calculate their change under permutations of parameters. This last relation is universal generalization, for an arbitrary simple Lie group and an arbitrary point in Vogel's plane, of the Kinkelin's reflection relation on Barnes' $G(1+N)$ function. Kinkelin's relation gives asymmetry of the $G(1+N)$ function (which is essentially the volume function for $SU(N)$ groups) under $N\leftrightarrow -N$ transformation (which is equivalent of the permutation of parameters, for $SU(N)$ groups), and coincides with universal relation on permutations at the $SU(N)$ line on Vogel's plane. These results are also applicable to universal partition function of Chern-Simons theory on three-dimensional sphere. This effect is analogous to modular covariance, instead of invariance, of partition functions of appropriate gauge theories under modular transformation of couplings.

38Two-parameter Families Of Quantum Symmetry Groups

By

We introduce and study natural two-parameter families of quantum groups motivated on one hand by the liberations of classical orthogonal groups and on the other by quantum isometry groups of the duals of the free groups. Specifically, for each pair (p,q) of non-negative integers we define and investigate quantum groups O^+(p,q), B^+(p,q), S^+(p,q) and H^+(p,q) corresponding to, respectively, orthogonal groups, bistochastic groups, symmetric groups and hyperoctahedral groups. In the first three cases the new quantum groups turn out to be related to the (dual free products of) free quantum groups studied earlier. For H^+(p,q) the situation is different: we show that H^+(p,0) is isomorphic to the quantum isometry group of the C*-algebra of the free group and it can be viewed as a liberation of the classical isometry group of the p-dimensional torus.

39Beyond Supersymmetry And Quantum Symmetry (an Introduction To Braided Groups And Braided Matrices)

By

This is a systematic introduction for physicists to the theory of algebras and groups with braid statistics, as developed over the last three years by the author. There are braided lines, braided planes, braided matrices and braided groups all in analogy with superlines, superplanes etc. The main idea is that the bose-fermi $\pm1$ statistics between Grassmannn coordinates is now replaced by a general braid statistics $\Psi$, typically given by a Yang-Baxter matrix $R$. Most of the algebraic proofs are best done by drawing knot and tangle diagrams, yet most constructions in supersymmetry appear to generalise well. Particles of braid statistics exist and can be expected to be described in this way. At the same time, we find many applications to ordinary quantum group theory: how to make quantum-group covariant (braided) tensor products and spin chains, action-angle variables for quantum groups, vector addition on $q$-Minkowski space and a semidirect product q-Poincar\'e group are among the main applications so far. Every quantum group can be viewed as a braided group, so the theory contains quantum group theory as well as supersymmetry. There also appears to be a rich theory of braided geometry, more general than super-geometry and including aspects of quantum geometry. Braided-derivations obey a braided-Leibniz rule and recover the usual Jackson $q$-derivative as the 1-dimensional case.

40Symmetry Groups Of Non-stationary Planar Ideal Plasticity

By

This paper is a study of the Lie groups of point symmetries admitted by a system describing a non-stationary planar flow of an ideal plastic material. For several types of forces involved in the system, the infinitesimal generators which generate the Lie algebra of symmetries have been obtained. In the case of a monogenic force, the classification of one- and two- dimensional subalgebras into conjugacy classes under the action of the group of automorphisms has been accomplished. The method of symmetry reduction is applied for certain subalgebra classes in order to obtain invariant solutions.

41Quantum Symmetry Groups Of C*-algebras Equipped With Orthogonal Filtrations

By

Motivated by the work of Goswami on quantum isometry groups of noncommutative manifolds we define the quantum symmetry group of a unital C*-algebra A equipped with an orthogonal filtration as the universal object in the category of compact quantum groups acting on A in a filtration preserving fashion. The existence of such a universal object is proved and several examples discussed. In particular we study the universal quantum group acting on the dual of the free group and preserving both the word length and the block length.

45Topological Symmetry Groups Of K_{4r+3}

We discuss a relation between deformed cohomologies of symmetry pseudo-groups and coverings of differential equations. Examples include the potential Khokhlov--Zabolotskaya equation and the Boyer--Finley equation.

46Classification Of Symmetry Groups For Planar N-body Choreographies

By

Since the foundational work of Chenciner and Montgomery in 2000 there has been a great deal of interest in choreographic solutions of the n-body problem: periodic motions where the n bodies all follow one another at regular intervals along a closed path. The principal approach combines variational methods with symmetry properties. In this paper, we give a systematic treatment of the symmetry aspect. In the first part we classify all possible symmetry groups of planar n-body, collision-free choreographies. These symmetry groups fall in to 2 infinite families and, if n is odd, three exceptional groups. In the second part we develop the equivariant fundamental group and use it to determine the topology of the space of loops with a given symmetry, which we show is related to certain cosets of the pure braid group in the full braid group, and to centralizers of elements of the corresponding coset.

48Deforming Solutions Of Geometric Variational Problems With Varying Symmetry Groups

By

We prove an equivariant implicit function theorem for variational problems that are invariant under a varying symmetry group (corresponding to a bundle of Lie groups). Motivated by applications to families of geometric variational problems lacking regularity, several non-smooth extensions of the result are discussed. Among such applications is the submanifold problem of deforming the ambient metric preserving a given variational property of a prescribed family of submanifolds, e.g., constant mean curvature, up to the action of the corresponding ambient isometry groups.

49Rotating Dust Solutions Of Einstein's Equations With 3-dimensional Symmetry Groups, Part 3: All Killing Fields Linearly Independent Of U^α And W^α

By

This is the third and last part of a series of 3 papers. Using the same method and the same coordinates as in parts 1 and 2, rotating dust solutions of Einstein's equations are investigated that possess 3-dimensional symmetry groups, under the assumption that each of the Killing vectors is linearly independent of velocity $u^{\alpha}$ and rotation $w^{\alpha}$ at every point of the spacetime region under consideration. The Killing fields are found and the Killing equations are solved for the components of the metric tensor in every case that arises. No progress was made with the Einstein equations in any of the cases, and no previously known solutions were identified. A brief overview of literature on solutions with rotating sources is given.

50The 27 Possible Intrinsic Symmetry Groups Of Two-component Links

By

We consider the "intrinsic" symmetry group of a two-component link $L$, defined to be the image $\Sigma(L)$ of the natural homomorphism from the standard symmetry group $\MCG(S^3,L)$ to the product $\MCG(S^3) \cross \MCG(L)$. This group, first defined by Whitten in 1969, records directly whether $L$ is isotopic to a link $L'$ obtained from $L$ by permuting components or reversing orientations; it is a subgroup of $\Gamma_2$, the group of all such operations. For two-component links, we catalog the 27 possible intrinsic symmetry groups, which represent the subgroups of $\Gamma_2$ up to conjugacy. We are able to provide prime, nonsplit examples for 21 of these groups; some are classically known, some are new. We catalog the frequency at which each group appears among all 77,036 of the hyperbolic two-component links of 14 or fewer crossings in Thistlethwaite's table. We also provide some new information about symmetry groups of the 293 non-hyperbolic two-component links of 14 or fewer crossings in the table.
