2Exact And Broken Symmetries In Particle Physics

By

In these lectures, I discuss the role of symmetries in particle physics. I begin by discussing global symmetries and show that they can be realized differently in nature, depending on whether or not the vacuum state is left invariant by the symmetry. I introduce next the notion of local symmetries and show how these symmetries can be implemented through the introduction of gauge fields. Using the simple example of a spontaneously broken U(1) symmetry, I discuss the Higgs mechanism showing that it provides a natural way for the gauge fields to acquire mass. Finally, I show how these concepts are used as the basis for the Standard Model of particle physics, ending with a brief description of some of the salient aspects of Quantum Chromodynamics and of the electroweak theory.

4On The Advancements Of Conformal Transformations And Their Associated Symmetries In Geometry And Theoretical Physics

By

The historical developments of conformal transformations and symmetries are sketched: Their origin from stereographic projections of the globe, their blossoming in two dimensions within the field of analytic complex functions, the generic role of transformations by reciprocal radii in dimensions higher than two and their linearization in terms of polyspherical coordinates by Darboux, Weyl's attempt to extend General Relativity, the slow rise of finite dimensional conformal transformations in classical field theories and the problem of their interpretation, then since about 1970 the rapid spread of their acceptance for asymptotic and structural problems in quantum field theories and beyond, up to the current AdS/CFT conjecture. The occasion for the present article: hundred years ago Bateman and Cunningham discovered the form invariance of Maxwell's equations for electromagnetism with respect to conformal space-time transformations.

7Non-Abelian Discrete Symmetries In Particle Physics

By

We review pedagogically non-Abelian discrete groups, which play an important role in the particle physics. We show group-theoretical aspects for many concrete groups, such as representations, their tensor products. We explain how to derive, conjugacy classes, characters, representations, and tensor products for these groups (with a finite number). We discussed them explicitly for $S_N$, $A_N$, $T'$, $D_N$, $Q_N$, $\Sigma(2N^2)$, $\Delta(3N^2)$, $T_7$, $\Sigma(3N^3)$ and $\Delta(6N^2)$, which have been applied for model building in the particle physics. We also present typical flavor models by using $A_4$, $S_4$, and $\Delta (54)$ groups. Breaking patterns of discrete groups and decompositions of multiplets are important for applications of the non-Abelian discrete symmetry. We discuss these breaking patterns of the non-Abelian discrete group, which are a powerful tool for model buildings. We also review briefly about anomalies of non-Abelian discrete symmetries by using the path integral approach.

9Noether Symmetries And Covariant Conservation Laws In Classical, Relativistic And Quantum Physics

By

We review the Lagrangian formulation of Noether symmetries (as well as "generalized Noether symmetries") in the framework of Calculus of Variations in Jet Bundles, with a special attention to so-called "Natural Theories" and "Gauge-Natural Theories", that include all relevant Field Theories and physical applications (from Mechanics to General Relativity, to Gauge Theories, Supersymmetric Theories, Spinors and so on). It is discussed how the use of Poincare'-Cartan forms and decompositions of natural (or gauge-natural) variational operators give rise to notions such as "generators of Noether symmetries", energy and reduced energy flow, Bianchi identities, weak and strong conservation laws, covariant conservation laws, Hamiltonian-like conservation laws (such as, e.g., so-called ADM laws in General Relativity) with emphasis on the physical interpretation of the quantities calculated in specific cases (energy, angular momentum, entropy, etc.). A few substantially new and very recent applications/examples are presented to better show the power of the methods introduced: one in Classical Mechanics (definition of strong conservation laws in a frame-independent setting and a discussion on the way in which conserved quantities depend on the choice of an observer); one in Classical Field Theories (energy and entropy in General Relativity, in its standard formulation, in its spin-frame formulation, in its first order formulation "`a la Palatini" and in its extensions to Non-Linear Gravity Theories); one in Quantum Field Theories (applications to conservation laws in Loop Quantum Gravity via spin connections and Barbero-Immirzi connections).

10Symmetries Of PDEs Systems In Solar Physics And Contact Geometry

By

One considers a special class of PDEs systems and one determines the associated symmetry group. Particulary, for the Blair system, one finds the symmetry group. A solutions of the Blair system gives a conformally flat contact metric structure and also it defines a "force-free" model of solar physics. By using the symmetry groups theory, one shows that the known solutions are group-invariant solutions and one gives new solutions.

11(Super)symmetries Of Semiclassical Models In Theoretical And Condensed Matter Physics

By

Van Holten's covariant algorithm for deriving conserved quantities is presented, with particular attention paid to Runge-Lenz-type vectors. The classical dynamics of isospin-carrying particles is reviewed. Physical applications including non-Abelian monopole-type systems in diatoms, introduced by Moody, Shapere and Wilczek, are considered. Applied to curved space, the formalism of van Holten allows us to describe the dynamical symmetries of generalized Kaluza-Klein monopoles. The framework is extended to supersymmetry and applied to the SUSY of the monopoles. Yet another application concerns the three-dimensional non-commutative oscillator.

12Discrete And Global Symmetries In Particle Physics

By

I begin these lectures by examining the transformation properties of quantum fields under the discrete symmetries of Parity, P, Charge Conjugation, C, and Time Reversal, T. With these results in hand, I then show how the structure of the Standard Model helps explain the conservation/violation of these symmetries in various sectors of the theory. This discussion is also used to give a qualitative proof of the CPT Theorem, and some of the stringent tests of this theorem in the neutral Kaon sector are reviewed. In the second part of these lectures, global symmetries are examined. Here, after the distinction between Wigner-Weyl and Nambu-Goldstone realizations of these symmetries is explained, a discussion is given of the various, approximate or real, global symmetries of the Standard Model. Particular attention is paid to the role that chiral anomalies play in altering the classical symmetry patterns of the Standard Model. To understand the differences between anomaly effects in QCD and those in the electroweak theory, a discussion of the nature of the vacuum structure of gauge theories is presented. This naturally raises the issue of the strong CP problem, and I present a brief discussion of the chiral solution to this problem and of its ramifications for astrophysics and cosmology. I also touch briefly on possible constraints on, and prospects for, having real Nambu-Goldstone bosons in nature, concentrating specifically on the simplest example of Majorons. I end these lectures by discussing the compatibility of having global symmetry in the presence of gravitational interactions. Although these interactions, in general, produces small corrections, they can alter significantly the Nambu-Goldstone sector of theories.

13Hidden Symmetries In The 6-Vertex Model Of Statistical Physics

By

The transfer matrix of the 6-vertex model of two-dimensional statistical physics commutes with many (more complicated) transfer matrices, but these latter, generally, do not commute between each other. The studying of their action in the eigenspaces of the 6-vertex model transfer matrix becomes possible due to a ``multiplicative property'' of the {\em vacuum curves} of $\cal L$-operators from which transfer matrices are built. This approach allowed, in particular, to discover for the first time the fact that the dimensions of abovementioned eigenspaces must be multiples of (big enough) degrees of the number 2.

1460 Years Of Broken Symmetries In Quantum Physics (From The Bogoliubov Theory Of Superfluidity To The Standard Model)

By

A retrospective historical overview of the phenomenon of spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) in quantum theory, the issue that has been implemented in particle physics in the form of the Higgs mechanism. The main items are: -- The Bogoliubov's microscopical theory of superfluidity (1946); -- The BCS-Bogoliubov theory of superconductivity (1957); -- Superconductivity as a superfluidity of Cooper pairs (Bogoliubov - 1958); -- Transfer of the SSB into the QFT models (early 60s); -- The Higgs model triumph in the electro-weak theory (early 80s). The role of the Higgs mechanism and its status in the current Standard Model is also touched upon.

15WHAT DO WE LEARN FROM ATOMIC PHYSICS ABOUT FUNDAMENTAL SYMMETRIES IN NUCLEI AND PARTICLES

By

Atomic experiments bring meaningful and valuable information on fundamental symmetries. The hypothesis of a large ($\sim 100$ eV) P-odd weak matrix element between single-particle states in heavy nuclei is inconsistent with the results of atomic PNC experiments. Upper limits on CP-violation obtained in atomic and molecular spectroscopy are as informative as those established in neutron physics. Very strict upper limits on T-odd, P-even interactions (nucleon-nucleon, electron-nucleon, electron-electron, and $\beta$-decay) are derived from the same atomic and neutron experiments.

The goal of this introduction to symmetries is to present some general ideas, to outline the fundamental concepts and results of the subject and to situate a bit the following lectures of this school. [These notes represent the write-up of a lecture presented at the fifth ``Seminaire Rhodanien de Physique: Sur les Symetries en Physique" held at Dolomieu (France), 17-21 March 1997. Up to the appendix and the graphics, it is to be published in "Symmetries in Physics", F.Gieres, M.Kibler,C.Lucchesi and O.Piguet, eds. (Editions Frontieres, 1998).]

17The New Symmetries Beyond The Standard Model (The Body-centred Cubic Periodic Symmetries In Particle Physics)

By

This paper proposes new symmetries (the body-centred cubic periodic symmetries) beyond the standard model. Using a free particle expanded Schrodinger equation with the body-centred cubic periodic symmetry condition, the paper deduces a full baryon spectrum (including mass M, I, S, C, B, Q, J and P) of all 116 observed baryons. All quantum numbers of all deduced baryons are completely consistent with the corresponding experimental results. The deduced masses of all 116 baryons agree with (more than average 98 percent) the experimental baryon masses using only four constant parameters. The body-centred cubic periodic symmetries with a periodic constant ``a'' about $10^{-23}$m play a crucial rule. The results strongly suggest that the new symmetries really exist. This paper predicts some kind of ``Zeeman effect'' of baryons, for example: one experimental baryon N(1720)${3/2}^{+}$ with $ \Gamma$ = 200 Mev is composed of two N baryons [(N(1659)${3/2}^{+}$ + N(1839)${3/2}^{+}$] = $\bar{N(1749)}$${3/2}^{+}$ with $\Gamma$ = 1839-1659 = 180 Mev.

18Root Systems From Toric Calabi-Yau Geometry. Towards New Algebraic Structures And Symmetries In Physics?

By

The algebraic approach to the construction of the reflexive polyhedra that yield Calabi-Yau spaces in three or more complex dimensions with K3 fibres reveals graphs that include and generalize the Dynkin diagrams associated with gauge symmetries. In this work we continue to study the structure of graphs obtained from $CY_3$ reflexive polyhedra. We show how some particularly defined integral matrices can be assigned to these diagrams. This family of matrices and its associated graphs may be obtained by relaxing the restrictions on the individual entries of the generalized Cartan matrices associated with the Dynkin diagrams that characterize Cartan-Lie and affine Kac-Moody algebras. These graphs keep however the affine structure, as it was in Kac-Moody Dynkin diagrams. We presented a possible root structure for some simple cases. We conjecture that these generalized graphs and associated link matrices may characterize generalizations of these algebras.

22Hidden Symmetries Of Dynamics In Classical And Quantum Physics

By

This article reviews the role of hidden symmetries of dynamics in the study of physical systems, from the basic concepts of symmetries in phase space to the forefront of current research. Such symmetries emerge naturally in the description of physical systems as varied as non-relativistic, relativistic, with or without gravity, classical or quantum, and are related to the existence of conserved quantities of the dynamics and integrability. In recent years their study has grown intensively, due to the discovery of non-trivial examples that apply to different types of theories and different numbers of dimensions. Applications encompass the study of integrable systems such as spinning tops, the Calogero model, systems described by the Lax equation, the physics of higher dimensional black holes, the Dirac equation, supergravity with and without fluxes, providing a tool to probe the dynamics of non-linear systems.

The concept of symmetries in physics is briefly reviewed. In the first part of these lecture notes, some of the basic mathematical tools needed for the understanding of symmetries in nature are presented, namely group theory, Lie groups and Lie algebras, and Noether's theorem. In the second part, some applications of symmetries in physics are discussed, ranging from isospin and flavor symmetry to more recent developments involving the interacting boson model and its extension to supersymmetries in nuclear physics.

24Symmetries Of Differential Equations And Applications In Relativistic Physics

By

In this thesis, we study the one parameter point transformations which leave invariant the differential equations. In particular we study the Lie and the Noether point symmetries of second order differential equations. We establish a new geometric method which relates the point symmetries of the differential equations with the collineations of the underlying manifold where the motion occurs. This geometric method is applied in order the two and three dimensional Newtonian dynamical systems to be classified in relation to the point symmetries; to generalize the Newtonian Kepler-Ermakov system in Riemannian spaces; to study the symmetries between classical and quantum systems and to investigate the geometric origin of the Type II hidden symmetries for the homogeneous heat equation and for the Laplace equation in Riemannian spaces. At last but not least, we apply this geometric approach in order to determine the dark energy models by use the Noether symmetries as a geometric criterion in modified theories of gravity.

25Symmetries In The Physics Of Strongly Correlated Electronic Systems

By

Strongly correlated electron systems require the development of new theoretical schemes in order to describe their unusual and unexpected properties. The usual perturbation schemes are inadequate and new concepts must be introduced. In our scheme of calculations, the Composite Operator Method, is possible to recover, through a self-consistent calculation, a series of fundamental symmetries by choosing a suitable Hilbert space.
