Optimal control of switched systems is challenging due to the discrete nature of the switching control input. The embedding-based approach addresses this challenge by solving a corresponding relaxed optimal control problem with only continuous inputs, and then projecting the relaxed solution back to obtain the optimal switching solution of the original problem. This paper presents a novel idea that views the embedding-based approach as a change of topology over the optimization space, resulting in a general procedure to construct a switched optimal control algorithm with guaranteed convergence to a local optimizer. Our result provides a unified topology based framework for the analysis and design of various embedding-based algorithms in solving the switched optimal control problem and includes many existing methods as special cases.

A switched reluctance actuator (SRA) is a type of electromagnetic stepper actuator that is gaining popularity for its simple and rugged construction, ability of extremely high-speed operation and hazard-free operation. SRA gained supremacy over permanent magnet actuators due to the fact that its building material are relatively low cost compared to the expensive and rare permanent magnets. SRA is already making its debut in automotive, medical and high precision applications. However, many parties are still oblivious to this new age actuator. This paper reviews the latest literature in terms of journal articles and conference proceedings regarding the different design parameters and control method of SRA. The impact of the parameters on the performance of SRA are discussed in details to provide valuable insight. This paper also discussed the advantages of various novel SRA structure designs that prove to be a huge contribution to the future technology. It is found that several design parameters such as the air gap when kept minimum, increases torque value; while increasing number of phases in SRA minimizes torque ripples. Increased stator and rotor arc angles will increase torque, not to mention a larger excitation current can also achieve the same effect. Researches are often done through Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis to verify the optimized design parameters before fabrication, whilst experimental procedures are executed to verify the simulation results. To ensure smooth phase switching and improved torque output, intelligent controllers are employed in speed control and direct torque control (DTC) methods of SRA.

Our results provide sufficient conditions for almost sure global asymptotic stability using Lyapunov-based methods when individual subsystems are stable and a certain ``slow switching'' condition holds. This slow switching condition takes the form of an asymptotic upper bound on the probability mass function of the number of switches that occur between the initial and current time instants. This condition is shown to hold for switching signals coming from the states of finite-dimensional continuous-time Markov chains; our results therefore hold for Markov jump systems in particular. For systems with control inputs we provide explicit control schemes for feedback stabilization using the universal formula for stabilization of nonlinear systems.

Abstract BACKGROUND:: Acne scarring is treatable by a variety of modalities. Ablative carbon dioxide laser (ACL), while effective, is associated with undesirable side effect profiles. Newer modalities using the principles of fractional photothermolysis (FP) produce modest results than traditional carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers but with fewer side effects. A novel ablative CO2 laser device use a technique called ablative fractional resurfacing (AFR), combines CO2 ablation with a FP system. This study was conducted to compare the efficacy of Q-switched 1064-nm Nd: YAG laser and that of fractional CO2 laser in the treatment of patients with moderate to severe acne scarring. METHODS:: Sixty four subjects with moderate to severe facial acne scars were divided randomly into two groups. Group A received Q-Switched 1064-nm Nd: YAG laser and group B received fractional CO2 laser. Two groups underwent four session treatment with laser at one month intervals. Results were evaluated by patients based on subjective satisfaction and physicians’ assessment and photo evaluation by two blinded dermatologists. Assessments were obtained at baseline and at three and six months after final treatment. RESULTS:: Post-treatment side effects were mild and transient in both groups. According to subjective satisfaction (p = 0.01) and physicians’ assessment (p < 0.001), fractional CO2 laser was significantly more effective than Q- Switched 1064- nm Nd: YAG laser. CONCLUSIONS:: Fractional CO2 laser has the most significant effect on the improvement of atrophic facial acne scars, compared with Q-Switched 1064-nm Nd: YAG laser.

The process of updating the inertial PDR estimates with the information provided by light detections is a new concept that we have named Light-matching (LM). The displacement and orientation change of a person obtained by inertial PDR is used by the LM method to accurately propagate the location hypothesis, and vice versa; the LM approach benefits the PDR approach by obtaining an absolute localization and reducing the PDR-alone drift. Even from an initially unknown location and orientation, whenever the person passes below a switched-on light spot, the location likelihood is iteratively updated until it potentially converges to a unimodal probability density function. The time to converge to a unimodal position hypothesis depends on the number of lights detected and the asymmetries/irregularities of the spatial distribution of lights. The proposed LM method does not require any intensity illumination calibration, just the pre-storage of the position and size of all lights in a building, irrespective of their current on/off state. This paper presents a detailed description of the light-matching concept, the implementation details of the LM-assisted PDR fusion scheme using a particle filter, and several simulated and experimental tests, using a light sensor-equipped Galaxy S3 smartphone and an external foot-mounted inertial sensor. The evaluation includes the LM-assisted PDR approach as well as the fusion with other signals of opportunity (WiFi, RFID, Magnetometers or Map-matching) in order to compare their contribution in obtaining high accuracy indoor localization. This paper is concerned with the stability problem for the planar linear switched system $\dot x(t)=u(t)A_1x(t)+(1-u(t))A_2x(t)$, where the real matrices $A_1,A_2\in \R^{2\times 2}$ are Hurwitz and $u(\cdot) [0,\infty[\to\{0,1\}$ is a measurable function. We give coordinate-invariant necessary and sufficient conditions on $A_1$ and $A_2$ under which the system is asymptotically stable for arbitrary switching functions $u(\cdot)$. The new conditions unify those given in previous papers and are simpler to be verified since we are reduced to study 4 cases instead of 20. Most of the cases are analyzed in terms of the function $\Gamma(A_1,A_2)={1/2}(\tr(A_1) \tr(A_2)- \tr(A_1A_2))$.

In wide area computer data communications, many networks have evolved by satisfying increased user demands in the most expedient manner. In some cases, new users demands are satisfied by installing a new link, rather than sharing the links that are already in place. This research investigates the differences in performance between using a dedicated link for each source destination pair (nonshared bandwidth) and using a single link to be used by all source destination pairs (shared bandwidth). Simulation models are developed for a wide area network using shared bandwidth, and a wide area network using nonshared bandwidth. The quality of service offered by each network is based on its responsiveness and productivity. Responsiveness will be measured in terms of average end to end delay of packet transmission, and productivity will be measured in terms of percent bandwidth utilization. The networks are modeled under a common set of operating assumptions and system environment. This allows for accurate comparison of packet delay and bandwidth utilization. Two variable input parameters are used in the simulation: intensity of input traffic load, and amount of link capacity. Provided that the intensity of the input traffic load remains below the network saturation level, it is shown that the shared system clearly outperforms the nonshared system. This result occurs for both a uniform and a nonuniform traffic load destination distribution.

We describe the behavior of solutions of switched systems with multiple globally exponentially stable equilibria. We introduce an ideal attractor and show that the solutions of the switched system stay in any given $\varepsilon$-inflation of the ideal attractor if the frequency of switchings is slower than a suitable dwell time $T$. In addition, we give conditions to ensure that the $\varepsilon$-inflation is a global attractor. Finally, we investigate the effect of the increase of the number of switchings on the total time that the solutions need to go from one region to another.
