3NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20120015464: Surface Textures And Features Indicative Of Endogenous Growth At The McCartys Flow Field, NM, As An Analog To Martian Volcanic Plains

By

Basaltic lavas typically form channels or tubes, which are recognized on the Earth and Mars. Although largely unrecognized in the planetary community, terrestrial inflated sheet flows also display morphologies that share many commonalities with lava plains on Mars. The McCartys lava flow field is among the youngest (approx.3000 yrs) basaltic flows in the continental United States. The southwest sections of the flow displays smooth, flat-topped plateaus with irregularly shaped pits and hummocky inter-plateau units that form a polygonal surface. Plateaus are typically elongate in map view, up to 20 m high and display lineations within the glassy crust. Lineated surfaces occasionally display small < 1m diameter lava coils. Lineations are generally straight and parallel each other, sometimes for over 100 meters. The boundaries between plateaus and depressions are also lineated and tilted to angles sometimes approaching vertical. Plateau-parallel cracks, sometimes containing squeeze-ups, mark the boundary between tilted crust and plateau. Some plateau depressions display level floors with hummocky surfaces, while some are bowl shaped with floors covered in broken lava slabs. The lower walls of pits sometimes display lateral, sagged lava wedges. Infrequently, pit floors display the upper portion of a tumulus from an older flow. In some places the surface crust has been disrupted forming a slabby texture. Slabs are typically on the scale of a meter or less across and no less than 7-10 cm thick. The slabs preserve the lineated textures of the undisturbed plateau crust. It appears that this style of terrain represents the emplacement of an extensive sheet that experiences inflation episodes within preferred regions where lateral spreading of the sheet is inhibited, thereby forming plateaus. Rough surfaces represent inflation-related disruption of pahoehoe lava and not a a lava. Depressions are often the result of non-inflation and can be clearly identified by lateral squeeze-outs along the pit walls that form when the rising crust exposes the still liquid core of the sheet. The plains of Tharsis and Elysium, Mars, display many analogous features

4Spin-textures, Berry's Phase And Quasiparticle Interference In Bi2Te3: A Topological Insulator With Warped Surface States

By

The energy-momentum relationship of electrons on the surface of an ideal "Hydrogen-Atom" Topological Insulator forms a cone - a Dirac cone, which, when warped and distorted (no longer described by the Dirac equation), can lead to unusual phenomena such as enhanced electronic interference around defects (observed in STM) and a magnetically ordered broken symmetry surface with lost topological protection. A detailed spin-texture and hexagonal warping maps on Bi2Te3 are presented in this context as a Viewpoint on L.Fu, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{103}, 266801 (2009).

5Surface-state Spin Textures In Strained Bulk HgTe: Strain-induced Topological Phase Transitions

By

The opening of a band gap due to compressive uniaxial strain renders bulk HgTe a strong three-dimensional topological insulators with protected gapless surface states at any surface. By employing a six-band k.p model, we determine the spin textures of the topological surface states of strained HgTe using their close relations with the mirror Chern numbers of the system and the orbital composition of the surface states. We show that at surfaces with C2v point group symmetry an increase in the strain magnitude triggers a topological phase transition where the winding number of the surface state spin texture is flipped while the four topological invariants characterizing the bulk band structure of the material are unchanged.

7Unconventional Fermi Surface Spin Textures In The Bi_xPb_{1-x}/Ag(111) Surface Alloy

By

The Fermi and Rashba energies of surface states in the Bi_xPb_{1-x}/Ag(111) alloy can be tuned simultaneously by changing the composition parameter x. We report on unconventional Fermi surface spin textures observed by spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy {that are correlated with a topological transition of the Fermi surface occurring at x=0.5. We show that the surface states remain fully spin polarized upon alloying and that the spin polarization vectors are approximately tangential to the constant energy contours. We discuss the implications of the topological transition for the transport of spin.

8Unraveling Wetting Transition Through Surface Textures With X-rays: Liquid Meniscus Penetration Phenomena.

By

This article is from Scientific Reports , volume 4 . Abstract In this report we show that synchrotron X-ray radiography is a powerful method to study liquid-air interface penetration through opaque microtextured surface roughness, leading to wetting transition. We investigate this wetting phenomenon in the context of sessile drop evaporation, and establish that liquid interface sinking into the surface texture is indeed dictated by the balance of capillary and Laplace pressures, where the intrinsically three-dimensional nature of the meniscus must be accounted for. Air bubble entrapment in the texture underneath impacting water drops is also visualized and the mechanisms of post-impact drop evaporation are discussed.

9Electric Charging Of Magnetic Textures On The Surface Of A Topological Insulator

By

A three-dimensional topological insulator manifests gapless surface modes, described by two-dimensional Dirac equation. We study magnetic textures, such as domain walls and vortices, in a ferromagnetic thin film deposited on a three-dimensional topological insulator. It is shown that these textures can be electrically charged, ascribed to the proximity effect with the Dirac surface states. We derive a general relation between the electric and the magnetic charges. As a physical consequence, we discuss domain wall motion driven by an applied electric field, which promises magnetic devices with high thermal efficiency.

10Surface-state Spin Textures And Mirror Chern Numbers In Topological Kondo Insulators

By

The recent discovery of topological Kondo insulators has triggered renewed interest in the well-known Kondo insulator samarium hexaboride, which is hypothesized to belong to this family. In this Letter, we study the spin texture of the topologically protected surface states in such a topological Kondo insulator. In particular, we derive close relationships between (i) the form of the hybridization matrix at certain high-symmetry points, (ii) the mirror Chern numbers of the system, and (iii) the observable spin texture of the topological surface states. In this way, a robust classification of topological Kondo insulators and their surface-state spin texture is achieved. We underpin our findings with numerical calculations of several simplified and realistic models for systems like samarium hexaboride.

14DTIC ADA303552: Recommendations Regarding The Use Of Textures For Cuing Surface Slant And Shape In Flight Simulation.

By

Most surface textures convey useful information about the slant curvature, and depth of the surface, as geometric consequences of perspective projection (primarily foreshortening and scaling). For the visual system to correctly interpret two-dimensional (2D) evidence of foreshortening and differential scaling as suggesting three-dimensional (3D) slant and depth, certain assumptions must hold regarding the regularity or homogeneity of the physical texture as well as its statistical isotropy. Recommendations are given regarding the selection of textures for flight simulation which match the perceptual assumptions and thereby permit 3D percepts.

15DTIC ADA472644: DNS For New Applications Of Surface Textures And MEMS Actuators For Turbulent Boundary Layer Control

By

As a two year project related to our earlier AFOSR work, we examined the use of surface textures to suppress the growth of turbulent spots during the later stages of boundary layer transition. The textures are small and closely spaced and hence require detailed direct numerical simulation of the near surface flow to capture the physics. The work emphasized the fundamental nature of that flow/texture interaction. This project primarily involved the application of our pre-existing computational techniques and software but did require the alteration of the code to handle a boundary layer and to run with high spatial resolution on a parallel processor. The possible applications to boundary layer control are suggested in Background while the section called Proposal Objectives reviews the approaches considered.
