3NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20170000291: Performance Evaluation Of An Intel Haswell- And Ivy Bridge-Based Supercomputer Using Scientific And Engineering Applications

We present a performance evaluation conducted on a production supercomputer of the Intel Xeon Processor E5- 2680v3, a twelve-core implementation of the fourth-generation Haswell architecture, and compare it with Intel Xeon Processor E5-2680v2, an Ivy Bridge implementation of the third-generation Sandy Bridge architecture. Several new architectural features have been incorporated in Haswell including improvements in all levels of the memory hierarchy as well as improvements to vector instructions and power management. We critically evaluate these new features of Haswell and compare with Ivy Bridge using several low-level benchmarks including subset of HPCC, HPCG and four full-scale scientific and engineering applications. We also present a model to predict the performance of HPCG and Cart3D within 5%, and Overflow within 10% accuracy.

8DTIC ADA227884: Optimization Of A Power Transient Stability Program On A Vector Supercomputer, Theory And Applications

Detailed simulations of large interconnected power distribution systems currently cannot be performed. Vector supercomputers have the capability to solve the great number of differential and non-linear simultaneous equations associated with the models, but programs have not been developed for them. This thesis investigates the optimization of a current power stability program installed on a Cray Y-MP vector supercomputer. Theory and models for power system stability are reviewed and an outline of the program is given. A discussion of vector supercomputer pipelining and the Cray Y-MP architecture are included. Programming constructs in FORTRAN which inhibit compiler optimization and vectorization are discussed, and program modification techniques to overcome these are presented. The modifications made to the power stability program are discussed and their effects on program execution time and output are presented. It is shown that significant speed up in program execution time can be achieved with no change in program output. (Author)(kr)

Supercomputer optimizations for a computational method of solving stochastic, multibody, dynamic programming problems are presented. The computational method is valid for a general class of optimal control problems that are nonlinear, multibody dynamical systems, perturbed by general Markov noise in continuous time, i.e., nonsmooth Gaussian as well as jump Poisson random white noise. Optimization techniques for vector multiprocessors or vectorizing supercomputers include advanced data structures, loop restructuring, loop collapsing, blocking, and compiler directives. These advanced computing techniques and superconducting hardware help alleviate Bellman's curse of dimensionality in dynamic programming computations, by permitting the solution of large multibody problems. Possible applications include lumped flight dynamics models for uncertain environments, such as large scale and background random aerospace fluctuations.

10DTIC ADA387113: Nonlinear Circuits And Neural Networks: Chip Implementation And Applications Of The TeraOPS CNN Dynamic Array Supercomputer

The algorithm for quadratic global optimization performed by a cellular neural network (CNN) with a slowly varying slope of the output characteristic is analyzed. It is shown that the only CNN which finds the global minimum of a quadratic function for any values of the input parameters is the network composed by only two cells. If the dimension is higher than two, even the CNN described by the simplest one-dimensional space-invariant template A=A(exp 1), A (exp 0), A (exp 1), fails to find the global minimum in a subset of the parameter space. Extensive simulations show that the CNN described by the above three-element template works correctly within several parameter ranges; however, if the parameters are chosen according to a random algorithm, the error rate increases with the number of cells.

During the period July 1997 - June 1998 work has continued according to the proposed plan. Advances in research have been made in the following areas: (1) The design and implementation of the first-ever ARAM in the CNN Chip Set Architecture was successfully competed, and the samples were successfully tested; (2) A major theoretical breakthrough has been achieved: it was shown that the genesis of complexity lies in the local activity of the cells and local interactions of the Cellular Nonlinear Networks; (3) Several CNN templates and subroutine designs, including mathematical morphology, have been developed and used in various applications; and (4) Advances in application of CNN have been made in the area of condition-based maintenance and image fusion.

This paper focuses on the parallel performance of two high-performance aerodynamic simulation packages on the newly installed NASA Columbia supercomputer. These packages include both a high-fidelity, unstructured, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver, and a fully-automated inviscid flow package for cut-cell Cartesian grids. The complementary combination of these two simulation codes enables high-fidelity characterization of aerospace vehicle design performance over the entire flight envelope through extensive parametric analysis and detailed simulation of critical regions of the flight envelope. Both packages. are industrial-level codes designed for complex geometry and incorpor.ats. CuStomized multigrid solution algorithms. The performance of these codes on Columbia is examined using both MPI and OpenMP and using both the NUMAlink and InfiniBand interconnect fabrics. Numerical results demonstrate good scalability on up to 2016 CPUs using the NUMAIink4 interconnect, with measured computational rates in the vicinity of 3 TFLOP/s, while InfiniBand showed some performance degradation at high CPU counts, particularly with multigrid. Nonetheless, the results are encouraging enough to indicate that larger test cases using combined MPI/OpenMP communication should scale well on even more processors.
