Today is Tuesday, December 17, and we're looking at University of Phoenix vs. Southern New Hampshire University. 

It would become one of the key moments in Black history in Canada. In 1968, six Black students from Sir George Williams University in Montreal filed a complaint of racism against their biology professor. By 1969, the university denied their complaint and more than 200 students began a peaceful sit-in. By the end of it, a fire broke out, police in riot-gear were sent in and 97 people were arrested. Colleges and universities can often struggle with student engagement, particularly when students face academic challenges. Institutions typically rely on cost-effective strategies like one-on-one SMS or email to provide their initial level of support and communicate with students. While ubiquitous across institutions, these outreach methods often result in low response rates (Oreopoulos and Petronijevic, 2019); students report that messages can seem impersonal (Scandone et al., 2021); they do not promote intercommunication back and forth between students and the organisation, nor enable social norms to be realised through common knowledge of message responses (Castleman and Meyer 2020). One potential solution is to use group messaging platforms (e.g. WhatsApp) or online forums. These platforms can encourage peer communication, creating a sense of community that may enhance student engagement and response rates. This research aims to expand our understanding of how group messaging tools can shape student behaviour and engagement in educational contexts. This study will explore the impact of supportive educational messages delivered through group messaging platforms compared to traditional communications. Specifically, it will examine how students respond to these messages, and whether group settings influence engagement, response rates, and interaction patterns. 2. Research Questions This research will address the following research questions (RQs): RQ1: Do supportive educational messages sent through group messaging platforms have different response rates than messages sent directly to students? RQ2: Does the level of engagement in a group messaging platform impact response rates? RQ3: How do group characteristics affect how students interact with messages sent via group messaging platforms? RQ4: Does the message sender have an impact on reported response rates in messages sent in group message platforms Messaging campaigns targeting students have been widely explored in colleges and universities, with SMS messaging and email being two common tools for communication (Oreopoulos and Petronijevic, 2019; Castleman and Meyer, 2020; Rogers and Feller, 2018). Recent studies have found that providing relevant and timely information to students or their parents can improve educational outcomes (Castleman and Meyer, 2020; Kraft and Rogers, 2015; Behavioural Insights Team, 2017; York, Loeb and Doss, 2018; Chande et al., 2015). Despite these promising results, follow-up studies have demonstrated a so-called voltage drop (List, 2022) in informational campaigns with some of their effects failing to replicate at scale. This raises questions about why some interventions succeed while others do not. While traditional SMS campaigns are common, they have limitations; they can appear impersonal and fail to facilitate a student dialogue that reinforces social norms. Generic messages reduce the impact of social identifiers, causing students to disengage if they feel the outreach is not tailored to their specific needs. Some researchers have advocated for personalised messaging (Bergman, 2016; Scandone et al., 2021) others note that interactive communication channels can foster higher engagement (Castleman and Meyer, 2020). Peer networks in educational settings can promote positive behaviours, knowledge sharing and mutual support. However, face-to-face groups are limited by time, cost and geography. Digital platforms like WhatsApp and Microsoft Teams have emerged as alternatives, offering students a new space to engage with peers, share ideas, and receive both academic and non-academic support. Despite their widespread use, little research demonstrates how educational message format, whether privately or in groups, affects student engagement and responses. This study will contribute to the literature on peer effects in online settings by investigating whether student engagement is more likely through group messaging platforms than with direct SMS and email messaging.
