The crew assigned to the STS-61B mission included Bryan D. O?Conner, pilot; Brewster H. Shaw, commander; Charles D. Walker, payload specialist; mission specialists Jerry L. Ross, Mary L. Cleave, and Sherwood C. Spring; and Rodolpho Neri Vela, payload specialist. Launched aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis November 28, 1985 at 7:29:00 pm (EST), the STS-61B mission?s primary payload included three communications satellites: MORELOS-B (Mexico); AUSSAT-2 (Australia); and SATCOM KU-2 (RCA Americom). Two experiments were conducted to test assembling erectable structures in space: EASE (Experimental Assembly of Structures in Extravehicular Activity), and ACCESS (Assembly Concept for Construction of Erectable Space Structure). In a joint venture between NASA/Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, and the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), EASE and ACCESS were developed and demonstrated at MSFC's Neutral Buoyancy Simulator (NBS). This STS-61B onboard photo depicts astronauts Ross and Spring working on EASE. The primary objective of these experiments was to test the structural assembly concepts for suitability as the framework for larger space structures and to identify ways to improve the productivity of space construction.

This is a 6th grade project in which the students learn about a famous landmark, monument, or building made out of stone, and create a 3D model of it. This was completed as part of a science unit on rocks and minerals. Timelapse installation of "Jane South: Shifting Structures" at the Knoxville Museum of Art. "Shifting Structures" is a site-specific project conceived by Brooklyn-based artist Jane South, who has become known internationally for her elaborate sculptural drawings. Using little more than a scalpel and colored inks, she transforms fragile folded paper into structures that appear industrially reinforced. The exhibition consists of a single, monumental work made up of hundreds of individual drawing components that are re-configured according to the specifics of the KMA’s gallery. South is interested in responding to the unique architectural features of the space as a challenge to construct the work in unexpected ways. In two previous locations, the work assumed a shadowy, solid form, and in another location it appeared bright and open, and even allowed viewers to wander inside. Each is made up of a complex network of sculptural drawings resembling cages, boxed grids, latticed arches, and horizontal ladders—some suspended from tiny paper hooks. All her surfaces are defined in some way with colored marks, outlines and crosshatchings. During the latter stages of the installation, museum audiences will be able to watch South assemble her monumental drawing in the gallery. On Thursday, September 27, 2024, The Rise received the "Best Speculative Project" Award at the annual Structures Awards held in downtown San Jose by the Silicon Valley Business Journal. Representatives from the City of Cupertino and The Rise were present to accept the award.

We propose a representation for coding initial conditions by means of a finite subset of regular expressions. The sequences are extracted both from de Bruijn diagrams and tiles specifying a set of phases fi_1 for each glider in Rule 110. The subset of regular expressions is explained in detail.

The work covered development of a semiconductor hetero-structures growth chamber to the existing photoemission chamber to characterize hybrid devices based on molecular solid/oxide structures. The work also investigated on developing optimum growth conditions for the desired Fermi level and work functions for different heterostructures.

The purpose of this manual is to provide Architect-Engineer (AE) firms guidance for the prediction of air blast, ground shock and fragment loadings on structures as a result of accidental explosions in or near these structures. Information in this manual is the result of an extensive literature survey and data gathering effort, supplemented by some original analytical studies on various aspects of blast phenomena. Many prediction equations and graphs appear in the manual, accompanied by numerous example problems illustrating their use. The manual is complementary to existing structural design manuals and is intended to reflect the current state-of-the-art in prediction of blast and fragment loads for accidental explosions of high explosives at the Pantex Plant. In some instances, particularly for explosions within blast-resistant structures of complex geometry, rational estimation of these loads is beyond the current state-of-the-art, and tests or analyses to supplement existing data or analysis methods are recommended.

Reconfigurable (morphing) aircraft offer the potential for efficient flight over a large range of airspeeds. The structural concept addressed herein is a tendon-actuated cellular compliant frame, with a flexible skin. 3-D cellular structures can perform well, but the need for active tendons to also carry passive lift loads limits their feasibility at larger scales. 2-D cellular structures can significantly change wing area and span, with lower actuation forces, and a system of parallel actuators is significantly lighter than a single actuator, especially at higher gross weights. Composite skins with cellular cores and flexible face sheets show promise for low-force actuation with reasonable lateral stiffness, while contact-aided cores offer additional benefits, including stress relief and increased lateral stiffness. Finally, while the potential benefits of morphing increase with aircraft gross weight, structural morphing capability decreases; this is accompanied by increasing structural and actuation weight fractions. This suggests that, for a given structural paradigm, there is a gross weight at which smooth morphing is most advantageous and practical. Continued research is needed to address the many challenges that remain before the promise of smoothly morphing aircraft can be realized.

The study illustrates the effectiveness of three-phase functionally graded material systems where stiff (typically ceramic) particles are incorporated within the fiber-reinforced medium. Added particles increase the stiffness of the fiber-reinforced material reducing static and dynamic stresses and deformations, increasing buckling loads and fundamental frequencies and enhancing the response to blast loading. The micromechanical model presented in the study represents an extrapolation of the Mori-Tanaka homogenization approach to the case of the system with dissimilar inclusions. It is shown that the material constants (elastic moduli and Poisson's ratios) obtained by the method developed in the study are within the Voight-Reuss and Hashin-Shtrikman bounds. Moreover, the stiffness of a representative cross-ply material remains within the strict three-point bounds. Accordingly, the developed micromechanical model is applicable to the analysis of cross-ply functionally graded particulate-matrix fiber-reinforced materials. The tensors of stiffness obtained by the model are applied to illustrate the effectiveness of three-phase particulate-matrix fiber-reinforced materials in representative static and dynamic problems. In particular, it is shown that blast-induced deformations and stresses can be significantly reduced by adding only a small amount of particles to the outer layers of a fiber-reinforced material.

Armed forces around the world are considering radical transformations to their structures and strategies because of the information revolution and the changing global environment. Senior leadership continually face decisions on how best to structure, modernize, organize, and employ forces in an increasingly uncertain future. For many of these problems analytical methods are not applicable, and large-scale experimentation is not feasible. Simulation provides a valuable tool for addressing these types of problems. One key characteristic of these decisions is the large number of factors, and interactions between factors that impact decision makers. Traditional simulation approaches are not designed to deal with this many factors, therefore the results are often incorrect or misleading. In this paper we introduce and implement efficient design of experiments techniques to analyze C2 organizational models and pursue optimal settings for different performance measures. This allows analysts to rapidly identify the important factors within the simulation, employ an experimental design to fully explore the simulation space efficiently, and design the systems with desired optimal performances with the simulation model. This effort dramatically increases the breadth and depth of insights possible when the simulation output data are analyzed, while reducing the time required for performing a study.

One such structure now being considered for deployment utilizes an ISO container sized steel frame with infill panels. The panels consist of a lightweight extruded polystyrene core sandwiched between two galvanized, light-gauge steel sheets. An investigation was conducted into the blast and fragmentation resistance of this new type of shelter and a direct comparison was made to that of a typical ISO container shelter currently deployed in theater. The static resistance function of the panel system was determined in the laboratory via two experimental methods. A 16-point loading tree simulating a uniform load was utilized on a variety of full-scale panel cross-sections representing seven panel configurations. A vacuum chamber was employed to accomplish static full-scale wall testing. Laboratory resistance data was used to model the dynamic response of the panel system using a single-degree of freedom (SDOF) analysis. Accuracy of the analytical model was verified via three arena blast experiments, each of which included an instrumented ISO container for direct data comparison.

Within the United States, sandbags have traditionally been the product of choice for temporary, barrier type flood-fighting structures. However, sandbag structures are labor intensive and time consuming to construct. Therefore, a need exists for more expedient, cost effective, temporary barrier type flood-fighting technologies. In 2004, Congress directed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to devise real-world testing procedures for Rapid Deployment Flood Wall (RDFW) and other promising alternative flood-fighting technologies. In response to that directive, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) developed a comprehensive laboratory and field-testing program for RDFW and two other flood-fighting products. Those two products, Portadam and Hesco Bastion, were selected on technical merit from proposals submitted by companies who manufacture temporary, barrier type flood-fight products. A standard sandbag structure was also tested in both the laboratory and field to provide a baseline by which the other products could be evaluated. During 2004, laboratory and field testing was conducted in Vicksburg, MS, under stringent testing protocols. The lab testing was conducted in a modified wave basin at ERDC. The field testing was conducted at the Vicksburg Harbor. The lab and field protocols included both performance parameters and operational parameters. These tests will provide the flood-fighting community results that will assist in the selection of the product that best fits their temporary, barrier type flood-fighting needs.

Over the period 1993-1996 the Naval Platform Survivability Section of the Australian Department of Defence, Defence Science and Technology Organisation conducted a series of tests which aimed to study the effects of internal explosive loading on welded steel structures with particular emphasis on dynamic response and failure mechanisms in this type of construction. These tests were performed on a combination of different 1m3 steel boxes[1-3], full scale models of ship compartments[4] and eventually live fire tests on the decommissioned Royal Australian Navy, Destroyer Escort HMAS Derwent[5] with the overall objective of improving the survivability of current and future RAN warship to explosive warhead threats. Beyond the requirements of sound ship design for normal operational activities, the design of ship structures to survive explosive threat effects requires detailed knowledge of the complex deformation and failure mechanisms associated with this dynamic loading regime. An understanding of these mechanisms necessitates a study of both cause; the explosive loading of the ship structure, and effect; the structures? response in terms of both deformation and failure. Without this basic understanding of the failure processes a successful programme for the design of ships with enhanced structural survivability is not achievable. A common feature observed in this series of trials was the regular failure of bulkheads at their deck and deckhead boundaries. It was evident that an understanding of both the explosive loading, ie blast physics, and consequent structural response, ie deformation and failure, of these boundaries is an important part of possible damage mitigation in ship structures. Based on these observations an experimental test apparatus has been designed which aims to facilitate the study of the relative performance of alternate bulkhead boundary attachment designs as well as construction techniques and procedures.
