We investigate the behavior of the critical charge for spontaneous pair production, $Z_C$, defined as the charge at which the total energy of a $K$-shell electron is $E=-m_e$, as a function of the radius $R$ of the charge distribution. Our approach is to solve the Dirac equation for a potential $V(r)$ consisting of a spherically symmetrical charge distribution of radius $R$ and a Coulomb tail. For a spherical shell distribution of the type usually associated with color-flavor locked strange quark nuggets, we confirm the relation $Z_C=0.71 R({\rm fm})$ for sufficiently large $R$ obtained by Madsen, who used an approach based on the Thomas-Fermi model. We also present results for a uniformly charged sphere and again find that $Z_C\sim R$ for large enough $R$. Also discussed is the behavior of $Z_C$ when simple {\it ad hoc} modifications are made to the potential for $0\leq r < R$.

Strongly correlated Fermi systems are among the most intriguing, best experimentally studied and fundamental systems in physics. These are, however, in defiance of theoretical understanding. The ideas based on the concepts like Kondo lattice and involving quantum and thermal fluctuations at a quantum critical point have been used to explain the unusual physics. Alas, being suggested to describe one property, these approaches fail to explain the others. This means a real crisis in theory suggesting that there is a hidden fundamental law of nature, which remains to be recognized. A theory of fermion condensation quantum phase transition, preserving the extended quasiparticles paradigm and intimately related to unlimited growth of the effective mass as a function of temperature, magnetic field etc, is capable to resolve the problem. We discuss the construction of the theory and show that it delivers theoretical explanations of vast majority of experimental results in strongly correlated systems such as heavy-fermion metals and quasi-two-dimensional Fermi systems.

In the concrete example described here, the wind injection source is a hot, bare, strange star, predicted to be a powerful source of electron-positron pairs created by the Coulomb barrier at the quark surface. We find that photons dominate in the emerging emission, and the emerging photon spectrum is rather hard and differs substantially from the thermal spectrum expected from a neutron star with the same luminosity. This might help distinguish the putative bare strange stars from neutron stars.

We present a new, finite-difference scheme for solving the relativistic kinetic Boltzmann equations for pairs and photons. We find the rates of particle number and energy outflows, outflow velocities, number densities, energy spectra, and other parameters for both photons and pairs as functions of the distance. We find that for L>2x10^{35} ergs/s, photons dominate the emerging emission. As L increases from ~ 10^{34} to 10^{42} ergs/s, the mean energy of emergent photons decreases from ~400-500 keV to 40 keV, as the spectrum changes in shape from that of a wide annihilation line to nearly a blackbody spectrum with a high energy (> 100 keV) tail. These results are pertinent to the deduction of the outside appearance of hot bare strange stars, which might help discern them from neutron stars.

We compute and present the distribution in mass of single and binary neutron stars, strange stars, and black holes. The calculations were performed using a stellar population synthesis code. We follow evolution of massive single stars as well as binaries with high mass primaries. The final product of the latter evolution can be either a binary composed of a white dwarf and a compact object (neutron star, black hole, strange star), two compact objects in a binary, or two single stars if the system was disrupted. We find in binaries a population of black holes which are more massive than single black holes which are a product of either binary or single evolution. We also find that if quark stars exist at all, their population can be as large as the population of black holes.
