19Measuring Transgender Stigma In Low- And Middle-Income Countries: A Scoping Review Protocol

By

Globally, transgender and other gender diverse (trans) people face pervasive stigma, which contributes to health inequities across multiple health outcomes, including, for example, HIV, violence, substance use disorders, post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, and suicide [1–7]. Stigma is a fundamental cause of health because it simultaneously limits access to resources, contributes to systemic vulnerability (e.g., unemployment, housing insecurity, poverty), and generates chronic stress [8–12]. Trans stigma occurs in many contexts and across multiple socio-ecological levels, resulting in multiple possible definitions and measurements for trans stigma. Measures of trans stigma within low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) need to consider the local cultural context in order to ensure an appropriate and relevant understanding of trans stigma. Currently, there are no best practices for how to measure trans stigma in LMICs, which can increase variability in the measurement and understanding of stigma across cultural contexts. The purpose of this scoping review is to determine what measures of trans stigma are currently being used in LMICs in order to inform best practices for measuring trans stigma in these settings.

20Factors Moderating The Longitudinal Effect Of Peer Contact On Self-Stigma In People With Mental Illness

By

A quantitative research project investigating the relationship between self-reported peer contact and self-stigma in people with mental illness. Recent evidence highlights the potential for peer contact to reduce self-stigma in people with mental illness as intergroup contact does public stigma against this group. However, the chronology of this relationship has yet to be established, and there are questions regarding features of peer interactions which may strengthen their effects, such as the stereotypicality of contacted peers; the similarity of mental health condition between interacting peers; the context, content, and valence of interactions; and the closeness of the relationship between peers. In the present study, 1100 adults with mental illness will report on the frequency and characteristics of interactions with others with mental illness, and their self-stigma at three timepoints. The data will be analyzed using random-intercept cross-lagged panel models.

24Stigma Towards Psoriasis And Proneness To Contagious Itch In The Dutch Population

By

This study aims to further elucidate the underlying mechanisms of contagious itch and public stigma towards skin conditions such as psoriasis. Moreover, a first step in reducing public stigma is planned by educating individuals about psoriasis and its emotional impact. To this end, participants will be looking at different standardized types of vignettes (e.g., revealing the skin condition psoriasis, talking about the associated itch symptoms, talking about the impact of having a skin disease) and various potential predictors of both public stigma and contagious itch will be assessed.

26Sobriety Stigma And Dating

By

Hypotheses Aim 1: To characterize sober (from alcohol) people’s dating decisions and perspectives on dating since becoming sober. We will collect data on sobriety, sobriety discrimination, dating status, sober dating history, dating app usage, and partner preferences. No hypotheses are put forth; instead, we will present descriptive statistics on people’s dating decisions and perspectives since becoming sober. Aim 2: Investigate the relationship between (1) time since becoming sober and (2) time spent dating as a sober individual on experiences of sobriety discrimination. We hypothesize (H1) both time since becoming sober and time spent dating as a sober person will be negatively related to experiencing dating discrimination on the premise that as time since becoming sober increases, sober individuals may start dating differently (i.e., use sober apps, start dating over sober individuals) and may become more comfortable with their sobriety over time spent dating. Aim 3: Understand how trait-level sobriety discrimination can impact a sober person's dating psychology. We hypothesize (H2) that higher scores on perceived others’ attitudes towards one's abstinence and felt-sobriety stigma will be positively related to (A) dating anxiety and (B) fear of being single on the premise that the pressure of being discriminated against from previous dates will increase one’s anxiety about their dating perspective. Aim 1: Frequencies and percentages describing participants’ sobriety, experiences of sobriety discrimination, dating status, sober dating history, dating app usage, and partner preference will be reported. Aim 2: We will run two separate logistic regressions. Both regression analyses will have the sobriety length (days of sobriety) and sober dating history) as the independent variables. The first DV will be a binary Yes or No question "Do you feel that people skip over you on dating because you are sober?" The second is: "Do you feel that people skip over you for a date because you are sober?" We will then use bivariate correlations and linear regressions for two continuous variables (1) I feel that I get skipped over on dating apps because I am sober, and (2) I feel that I get passed up on dates in the real world because I am sober. Aim 3: Bivariate correlations and linear regressions will be used to ass the OPATA and Felt Stigma on Dating Anxiety and Fear of Being Single Outliers and Exclusions 1. If they are not single 2. If they don't Id as sober 3. If anyone puts a four or lower in the honesty check (which directly asks participants if they were honest during the survey), their data will not be used in the analysis. 4. Attention check: If they fail, "Please pick option 4." 5. Attention check: If they fail, the attention check of "This is an attention check; please pick strongly agree." 6. If they write obscure feedback. Sample Size Based on a power analysis (G-Power version 3.1, Faul et al., 2009), 483 participants were needed to have adequate (80%) power to detect a small-to-moderate regression of f2 = .025 (r =.25). Thus, we will aim to collect up to 550 participants to ensure good data quality.

34Interventions For Reduction Of Stigma In People With Schizophrenia: A Systematic Review And Meta‑analysis

By

People with schizophrenia experienced a higher level of internalized stigma compared to people with other mental disorders. Internalized stigma could lead to pervasive negative effects in their life. Although internalized stigma interventions have shown some benefits, there is a dearth of interventions and meanwhile a lack of evidence as to their effectiveness in people with schizophrenia. This study aims at examining the effectiveness of internalized stigma reduction in people with schizophrenia through a systematic review and meta‑analysis.

36Psychosocial Consequences Of Long-Covid - Stigma And Long-Covid

By

A considerable number of Covid-19 patients are still affected by lasting symptoms weeks or months after the acute Covid-19 disease. This so-called Long-Covid disease has so far been studied mainly from a medical perspective (e.g. symptomatology, progress of symptoms). This perspective is important, but possible psycho-social consequences of this new disease have been mostly neglected so far. Therefore, the aim of this study is to shed light on the psycho-social consequences of Long-Covid patients and relatives of Long-Covid patients. Stigmatization, defined as the “discrimination and negative associations with people with certain attributes (social, physical, behavioural)” (van Daalen et al., 2021, p. 313), has been experienced by people afflicted with Covid-19 (van Daalen et al., 2021). Yet, also people afflicted with Long-Covid, i.e., the persistent symptoms after infection with Covid-19 (Blomberg et al., 2021; Phillips & Williams, 2021), can experience stigma (Ballering et al., 2021). This kind of social stigma experienced with Long-Covid likely occurs in the form of healthcare professionals or people from the social network implying that the affected person is merely imagining / pretending symptoms, that the condition is psychosomatic, or that they experience benefits from claiming to still have symptoms (Ballering et al., 2021). For people with Long-Covid experiencing stigma is likely to have negative effects on people’s wellbeing, quality of life, and help-seeking behavior (Ballering et al., 2021). Different kinds of stigma can be distinguished: (a) enacted stigma, defined as the perceived consequences of others knowing about the disease, such as losing friends; (b) disclosure concerns, defined as not telling anyone about one’s disease; (c) internalized stigma, defined as feeling less worthy as healthy people as well as feeling guilty; and (d) external stigma, defined as a perception of other people’s generalized attitudes regarding the disease (Berger et al., 2001; Dar et al., 2020; Wright et al., 2007). This study set out to examine associations between perceived stigmatization, including the different kinds of stigma, of people with long-covid and their well-being, perceived stress, and quality of life.

40Belongingness As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Felt Stigma And Identification In Fans

By

In the present study we examined the relationship between felt stigma and fan group identification as well as potential mediators of this relationship. Fans of various interests (e.g., sport, music) completed measures regarding felt stigma toward the fan group, psychological needs obtained through group membership (e.g., self-esteem, belonging), and identification with the fan community. The results showed that felt stigma predicted fan group identification, and the relationship was mediated by a psychological need for belonging. The results support prior research regarding the association between stigma and identification. However, the results add to the literature by showing belongingness as a mediator of this association.

41An Exploration Of Sexual Assault & Sexual Minority Stigma

By

Sexual assault is defined as sexual contact that is unwanted, coerced, forced, or could not be consented to due to incapacitation, and includes both attempted and completed instances of fondling or penetration (Koss et al., 2006). It is well established that individuals who hold stigmatized identities, particularly sexual minority individuals, are at increased risk of experiencing sexual assault in their lifetimes (Chen et al., 2020). Further, a small body of research suggests that sexual minority individuals experience more severe mental health outcomes following sexual assault as compared to heterosexuals (Sigurvinsdottir & Ullman, 2016). Moreover, sexual assault itself is a highly stigmatized experience, and there are frequent calls by researchers in the sexual assault literature to consider stigma more seriously in future work (Kennedy & Prock, 2018; Dworken et al., 2018). Taken together, the sexual assault literature would likely benefit from an improved understanding of the role of stigma in post-victimization mental health and treatment seeking outcomes. Among current publications in the sexual assault literature, stigma has not been thoroughly operationalized or consistently measured. Few studies quantify more than one level of stigma. Studies that do measure multiple levels of stigma rarely do so using both objective and subjective measures, which can lead to biased estimates of the relative importance of stigma levels. Few to no studies seek to quantify the effect of stigma across stigmatized groups. Finally, whereas some studies address stigma towards sexual assault specifically, others address stigma related to a stigmatized identity and there is little discussion of how these two types of stigma may differ. The goal of the current publication is to provide a more robust assessment of the relationship between sexual assault, identity-relevant stigma, and post-assault mental health and treatment seeking outcomes. Future work building on this investigation will seek to address stigma specifically related to sexual assault.

44The Role Of Perfectionism In Perceived Stigma, Isolation And Common Humanity In Individuals With Inflammatory Bowel Disease

By

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a stigmatised condition and those living with it report attempts to avoid stigma through symptom concealment and social withdrawal. Research indicates however, that individuals with IBD have a hypervigilance to stigma. Perfectionistic traits may amplify this hypervigilance and subsequent attempts to avoid stigmatisation. Using an experimental design, this study aims to examine whether individuals with IBD perceive stigma in the facial expressions of others, and whether this impacts feelings of isolation. It further aims to examine the effect of trait perfectionism and the desire to appear perfect on perceived stigma and isolation.

48Influence Of Sexual Preference And Information On Impunity For Prosocial Behaviour On Stigma-related Outcomes - A Vignette Study

By

The study examines the assessment of prosocial behaviour of vignette persons by participants. For this purpose, participants are presented with different fictitious descriptions of people who differ from each other in various ways within the framework of a within-subjects design. The sexual preference (paedophile vs. teleiophile) and the presence of information about impunity (explicit mention of impunity vs. absence of this information) are varied.

49OnStigma: The Impact Of Competence Within Self-stigma Among People With Obesity - Testing The Predictions Of The SCM And The BIAS Map

By

People suffering from obesity are one of the most affected groups by public and self-stigma (Alimoradi et al. 2020; Emmer et al. 2020; Robinson et al. 2020). This is problematic since public and self-stigma are related to several negative outcomes, for example reduced metal health (Ilic et al. 2013), reduced well-being (Kao et al. 2016), increased symptom severity (Boyd et al. 2014) or suicidality (Oexle et al. 2018). Self-stigma, as well as public stigma, can be described with the aid of three elements: stereotypes (cognitions), prejudice (emotions), and discrimination (behavior) (Corrigan und Watson 2002). Public stigma has already been observed based on the Stereotype Content Model (SCM, (Fiske et al. 2002) and the BIAS map (Cuddy et al. 2007; Sadler et al. 2015). The SCM and the BIAS map are valuable when examining public stigma because they make specific predictions of stereotypes, prejudice (emotions), and discrimination, and their interactions. However, the applicability of those theories to self-stigma has not been demonstrated yet. A better understanding of self-stigma in obesity (by applying the SCM and the BIAS map) seems valuable because of the high prevalence. So, this study aims to apply the SCM and BIAS map to self-stigma among people with obesity (BMI ≥ 30) in an experimental design. Theoretical assumptions (e.g. (Abele et al. 2021) as well as our previous cross-sectional study indicate that the fundamental stereotype dimension competence has more impact within the process of self-stigma than the dimension warmth. Therefore, this study aims to experimentally validate the predictions of the Stereotype Content Model (Fiske et al. 2002) and the BIAS map (Cuddy et al. 2007) within the theoretical framework of self-stigma focusing on the stereotype dimension competence. Assuming that self-stigma results from a multi-stage process including stereotype awareness, stereotype agreement, and self-concurrence (Corrigan et al. 2006), we try to manipulate a stereotype (cognition) referring to one’s competence to prove the model-based predictions. To do so, we conduct an online experiment. After baseline assessment (T0), participants go through a performance test and receive standardized video feedback. We investigate whether the feedback induces a low vs. neutral vs. high competence evaluation (referring to the self) and whether this is able to influence the theoretically predicted emotions (contempt, pity, envy, [fear, anger, shame]) and behavior tendencies (active and passive self-harm) at two-time points – immediately after the manipulated feedback (T+1) and again after 24 hours (T+2). Beyond that, potential moderators (e.g., depressiveness, anxiety, personality traits) will be observed in a pre-assessment (T-1) that chronologically takes place before the baseline assessment.

50Internet-based Acceptance And Commitment Therapy Intervention On Attitude Towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help: The Role Of Psychological Inflexibility And Self-stigma Of Seeking Help

By

The study will conduct a randomized controlled trial, assigning eligible participants to an intervention group and a waitlist group. A self-designed iACT intervention was used to conduct a 12-day intervention for the intervention group. Participants’ psychological inflexibility, self-stigma of seeking help, and attitude towards seeking professional psychological help were measured at four time points: before the intervention, during the intervention, after the intervention, and at a one-month follow-up, to assess the immediate and long-term effects of the iACT intervention program and explore its mediating mechanisms. Repeated measures ANOVA was used to evaluate the intervention effects, and a latent growth model was used to analyze the longitudinal intervention mechanisms.

2Burial of the Guns

By

Book's cover

This is a book of short stories centered around the Civil War and its aftermath. The author was a prominent Virginian in his day, and his writing shows a talent for poignant reminiscences. The title comes from the second story, in which an artillery unit detached from Lee's army determines to follow their last orders - not to let their cannons fall into Union hands - despite Lee's surrender and the end of the War in Virginia. The other stories focus on individuals in the post-War years.
