1Stem Cell Therapy In Multiple Sclerosis: A Meta-analysis Of Randomized Controlled Trials

By

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by demyelination of the central nervous system (CNS) that affects millions of individuals worldwide. As there is no cure, current therapeutic options aim at controlling symptoms and slowing disease progression. However, These therapies do not stop the progression of this neurodegenerative disease and have their own side effects. cell replacement therapy with stem cells has emerged as a potential therapeutic option Review Question in PICO Format: a. Participants/ Population: Patients with Multiple Sclerosis Subgroups: Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (PPMS), Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS), Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (SPMS), Highly Active Multiple Sclerosis. b. Intervention: Any Stem cell and product derived from stem cells (mononuclear cells, circulating progenitor cells, hematopoietic progenitor cells, mesenchymal stem cell, neural stem cell or any derived product from stem cell) c. Comparator/ control: Usual Care/ Conventional Care d. Main outcome/ Critical Outcome: Critical: Efficacy outcomes: Primary Outcome o The mean change of EDSS score between baseline and end of the follow up o The number of participants who had relapses at 12 months o Disability worsening, defined as an increase of 0.5 point of disability for patients with baseline expanded disability status scale (EDSS) greater than or equal to 5.5, and an increase of 1 point of disability for basal EDSS less than or equal to 5.0 sustained for six months at 12 months. o No evidence of disease activity (NEDA) at 12 months if participants did not experience any clinical relapse, disability progression, or any new MRI lesion over that period
