There exists no consensus as to what indicates state satisfaction with the systemic status quo even though it has been a widely used concept in the empirical literature on conflict. This is surprising because satisfaction is not a new concept in International Relations and has been accorded a central role in many theories of war. In this article, we present a measure of satisfaction based on the cost of money for sovereign borrowers and compare that measure to several leading indicators of satisfaction. We find little correlation among the existing indicators and similar variation in their ability to predict conflict. Overall, our results suggest that the cost of money may serve as a useful indicator of satisfaction as it: (1) best predicts behaviors consistent with satisfied (dissatisfied) states; (2) is least likely to obscure the impact of other common independent variables; and (3) can also be included with measures of dyadic preferences in multivariate models of conflict CC0 Waiver

The raised demand for precision requires a deep understanding of the limiting errors involved. The achievable accuracy is under debate and current observing proposals max out the capabilities of todays technology. The question for self-consistency in data analysis and effective techniques to handle unknown systematic errors is of increasing importance. An analysis based on independent data sets is put forward and alternative approaches for some of the steps involved are introduced.

This paper presents findings of a study that examined teachers' and parents' attitudes toward teacher evaluation, particularly in regard to the usefulness of instruction-based instruments to measure holistic, integrated classroom practices. A pilot teacher assessment instrument was developed and field-tested at seven schools in which holistic methods were practiced. Interviews were also conducted with 10 elementary school principals and 9 teachers who had established holistic, integrated practices. Findings indicate that although the principals endorsed holistic, integrated practices, they were reluctant to alter the status quo of using a direct instruction-based evaluation instrument. Teachers who were evaluated by principals unfamiliar with holistic instruction expressed frustration and disappointment, viewing their principals' observations as missed opportunities for both teachers and administrators. A conclusion is that the teacher-evaluation instrument is much less important than the processes of negotiation and collaboration between teachers and administrators. The teacher evaluation instrument should be collaboratively developed; negotiated by participants for agreement of form and content; controlled by participants for shared decision making in how the instrument is used; able to assess the complexities of holistic, integrated classrooms; learning-centered; revised as participants change and grow; and used to foster collegial interchanges. In many cases, faculty did not utilize recommended standards or principles. Researchers worked to re-design the special education curriculum and seek pilot-test status for NCATE 2000 standards with their scheduled accreditation visit. Neither initiative generated the necessary change, so a PT3 grant, Technology Infusion Project, was secured. The project emphasized professional development for faculty and cooperating teachers, providing workshops on curriculum alignment, computer skills, and multimedia technology use. Over time, training became more sophisticated. Two years of evaluation data suggest that teachers found the workshops useful. The workshops resulted in enhanced student performance. Teachers felt more competent in curriculum design, assessment, and computer utilization. They appreciated the opportunity to network. In this study, we examine how much support radical social policy alternatives receive in the Netherlands when they are compared to the status quo or moderate changes to existing policy. Furthermore, we examine how levels of support relate to conditionality and political orientation in this context. Broadly summarized, we argue and expect that support for an ideal-typical BI proposal is relatively low when it is compared to the status quo, and that our comparative measure more accurately reflects actual support.

In order to ensure vital U.S. interests concerning security and economic freedom in the region, the status quo in the Taiwan Strait must be maintained by a comprehensive U.S. strategy involving all aspects of national power. Key to this strategy is the bolstering of international/regional support of Taiwan, Taiwanese military deterrence backed by strategically ambiguous U.S. assurances of security, intertwined economic ties between all parties, and a strong informational campaign aimed at lessoning tensions and improving diplomatic relations between all parties involved. The strategy must maintain a delicate balance to ensure neither the PRC nor Taiwan sees a change in U.S. policy towards the sovereignty of Taiwan and therefore an opportunity to attempt unilateral resolution of the One-China issue. Any attempt by either the PRC or Taiwan to resolve the issue would force the U.S. to take one side or the other, either of which would damage U.S. vital national interests in the Asia-Pacific region. Therefore, it remains in the best interest of the U.S. to retain a policy of strategic ambiguity and keep the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.

The current study focuses on the established relationship between subjective wellbeing and incumbent voting. The study will include secondary data and an online experiment. The goal of the secondary data is to justify the online experiment. The online experiment seeks to make a causal claim regarding happier individuals voting for the status quo.

The current study focuses on the established relationship between subjective wellbeing and incumbent voting. The study will include secondary data and an online experiment. The goal of the secondary data is to justify the online experiment. The online experiment seeks to make a causal claim regarding happier individuals voting for the status quo.
