Existing approaches for detecting anomalies in spreadsheets can help to discover faults, but they are often applied too late in the spreadsheet lifecycle. By contrast, our approach detects anomalies immediately whenever users change their spreadsheets. This live inspection approach has been implemented as part of the Spreadsheet Inspection Framework, enabling the tool to visually report findings without disturbing the users' workflow. An advanced list representation allows users to keep track of the latest findings, prioritize open problems, and check progress on solving the issues. Results from a first user study indicate that users find the approach useful.

We report on one aspect of a longitudinal study which seeks insight into the ways in which spreadsheet experience and teachers' pedagogic strategies shape pupils' construction of meaning for algebra. Using data from stimulated recall interviews we analyse the evolution of meaning for variable through the mediation of the variable cell and the mediation of naming a column. We discuss metaphors of change and dragging, together with the process of naming. [For complete proceedings, see ED496851.]

This instructional unit is intended to assist teachers in helping students learn to use electronic spreadsheets. The 11 learning activities included, all of which are designed for use in conjunction with Multiplan Spreadsheet Software, are arranged in order of increasing difficulty. An effort has been made to include problems applicable to each of the following areas: basic business, secretarial, administrative support, information processing, marketing, and accounting. Topics covered in the individual lessons include operating a spreadsheet program, formatting an electronic spreadsheet, entering and saving data, creating a new electronic spreadsheet from an existing one, rearranging and replacing data, changing data on an electronic spreadsheet and understanding the effect of new "what if" projections, printing an electronic spreadsheet, entering formulas, copying data, printing tables, making interest projections, and organizing and creating a new spreadsheet by integrating all of the aforementioned concepts. Each lesson includes a lesson title, objectives, list of needed teaching aids and references, teaching outline, outcomes, learning activity, instructions, and reference data necessary to complete the activity. The use of technology allows students to look at mathematical concepts in many different ways. With a variety of perspectives, studying ideas that were at one time difficult to understand are possible. Mathematics learning focuses more on concepts and less on computations. Various sequences including arithmetic, geometric, and partial sum can be studied in explicitly defined and recursive forms. This paper describes spreadsheet macros for automating computations and graphing relationships for these sequences. Learning mathematics with technology enables the student to develop intuition for correct results and to do meaningful mathematics. Classroom examples illustrate the relevance of the mathematics concepts studied. As technology continues to be part of many facets of society, studying mathematics with technology is also becoming increasingly necessary. (Author)

Cloud-based documents are inherently valuable, due to the volume and nature of sensitive personal and business content stored in them. Despite the importance of such documents to Internet users, there are still large gaps in the understanding of what cybercriminals do when they illicitly get access to them by for example compromising the account credentials they are associated with. In this paper, we present a system able to monitor user activity on Google spreadsheets. We populated 5 Google spreadsheets with fake bank account details and fake funds transfer links. Each spreadsheet was configured to report details of accesses and clicks on links back to us. To study how people interact with these spreadsheets in case they are leaked, we posted unique links pointing to the spreadsheets on a popular paste site. We then monitored activity in the accounts for 72 days, and observed 165 accesses in total. We were able to observe interesting modifications to these spreadsheets performed by illicit accesses. For instance, we observed deletion of some fake bank account information, in addition to insults and warnings that some visitors entered in some of the spreadsheets. Our preliminary results show that our system can be used to shed light on cybercriminal behavior with regards to leaked online documents.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of spreadsheet application in teaching Data Management in Mathematics of the Modern World on the students' performances among first-year College Students during the Second Semester of School Year 2022-2023. A quasi-experimental research design with the pretest-posttest non-equivalent groups design was employed in the study with the researcher–made questionnaire comprising 40 items test. The statistical methods used to gather data were treated using mean, t-test for independent samples, z-test for correlated samples, and standard deviation. Data were gathered from the 74 first-year college students in Jose Rizal Memorial State University–Main Campus. Results revealed that the pre-test and post-test performance of the students in the control and experimental groups was good. But their post-test performance in the experimental group was excellent. It is concluded that Spreadsheet Application is a very important and effective tool in teaching Data Management in Mathematics of the Modern World to first-year college students. Its application tremendously increases students' performance from the pre-test to the post-test.
