Multilinguals produce both typical and atypical speech disfluencies at higher rates than monolinguals, but the underlying reasons for this phenomenon are less than well understood. This markedly high frequency of speech disfluencies can cause typically fluent multilingual individuals to be misdiagnosed as individuals who stutter. The objective of this scoping review is to identify and map the available evidence concerning the reported types and frequencies of disfluencies of speech disfluencies occurring in multilingual individuals who do and do not stutter.
