Researchers in the Boston University Department of Environmental Health conducted a case study of the Boston Schoolyard Initiative, a project that provides funds and technical support to community groups dedicated to renovating schoolyards in Boston. Researchers described the process by which the Boston Schoolyard Initiative came into being and identified its key successes, challenges and lessons. Key findings include: (1) The Boston Schoolyard Initiative's structure, which gives both public and private agencies authority to commit funds and make decisions, is critical to its success; (2) Redevelopment efforts cannot be sustained by volunteerism alone; and (3) Schoolyards can bring schools and communities together. A bibliography is included.

The purpose of the Space Shuttle Cockpit Avionics Upgrade project was to reduce crew workload and improve situational awareness. The upgrade was to augment the Shuttle avionics system with new hardware and software. An early version of this system was used to gather human factor statistics in the Space Shuttle Motion Simulator of the Johnson Space Center for one month by multiple teams of astronauts. The results were compiled by NASA Ames Research Center and it was was determined that the system provided a better than expected increase in situational awareness and reduction in crew workload. Even with all of the benefits nf the system, NASA cancelled the project towards the end of the development cycle. A major success of this project was the validation of the hardware architecture and software design. This was significant because the project incorporated new technology and approaches for the development of human rated space software. This paper serves as a case study to document knowledge gained and techniques that can be applied for future space avionics development efforts. The major technological advances were the use of reflective memory concepts for data acquisition and the incorporation of Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) products in a human rated space avionics system. The infused COTS products included a real time operating system, a resident linker and loader, a display generation tool set, and a network data manager. Some of the successful design concepts were the engineering of identical outputs in multiple avionics boxes using an event driven approach and inter-computer communication, a reconfigurable data acquisition engine, the use of a dynamic bus bandwidth allocation algorithm. Other significant experiences captured were the use of prototyping to reduce risk, and the correct balance between Object Oriented and Functional based programming.

The NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) was requested to examine processing sensitivities (e.g., cure temperature control/variance, debonds, density variations) of polybenzimidazole nitrile butadiene rubber (PBI-NBR) insulation, case fiber, and resin systems and to evaluate nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and damage tolerance methods/models required to support human-rated composite motor cases. The proposed use of composite motor cases in Blocks IA and II was expected to increase performance capability through optimizing operating pressure and increasing propellant mass fraction. This assessment was to support the evaluation of risk reduction for large booster component development/fabrication, NDE of low mass-to-strength ratio material structures, and solid booster propellant formulation as requested in the Space Launch System NASA Research Announcement for Advanced Booster Engineering Demonstration and/or Risk Reduction. Composite case materials and high-energy propellants represent an enabling capability in the Agency's ability to provide affordable, high-performing advanced booster concepts. The NESC team was requested to provide an assessment of co- and multiple-cure processing of composite case and PBI-NBR insulation materials and evaluation of high-energy propellant formulations.

The upcoming launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in less than three years is certain to bring a revolution in our understanding of many area of astrophysics, with one of the key goals being galaxy evolution. As the first proposals will be due in a little over two years, the time is ripe to take a holistic look at the science goals which the community would wish to accomplish with this observatory. Contrary to our experiences with the Hubble Space Telescope, which has now operated successfully for over two decades due to several timely servicing missions, the lifetime of JWST is finite and relatively short, with a lifetime requirement of five years, and a ten-year goal. Following the discussion session at the "Exploring the Universe with JWST" conference at ESA-ESTEC in October 2015, we highlight in this document the (non-local) extragalactic science goals for JWST. We describe how a concerted community effort could best address these, ensuring that the desired survey can be completed during the JWST mission.

We present a high-precision measurement of the parallax for the 12-day Cepheid SS Canis Majoris, obtained via spatial scanning with the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Spatial scanning enables astrometric measurements with a precision of 20-40 muas, an order of magnitude better than pointed observations. SS CMa is the second Cepheid targeted for parallax measurement with HST, and is the first of a sample of eighteen long-period >~ 10 days) Cepheids selected in order to improve the calibration of their period-luminosity relation and eventually permit a determination of the Hubble constant H_0 to better than 2%. The parallax of SS CMa is found to be 348 +/- 38 muas, corresponding to a distance of 2.9 +/- 0.3 kpc. In the paper, the matrix method for classification of the second order surfaces in space 4 R is developed. This method is based on the analysis of the 5-th order symmetrical quadratic matrix. The matrix is built with three coefficients of the quadratic form of four variables. Such matrix produces 25 monomial 5-th order matrices. These matrices give 14 simplest equations of elliptic, hyperbolic and parabolic types of surfaces.

This thesis examines the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) pilot implementation conducted at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center San Diego (SSC-SD), the first of four Department of the Navy (DON) pilot implementations. Specifically, comparisons are drawn between both successful and unsuccessful ERP implementations within private sector organizations and that of SSC-SD. Any commonalities in implementation challenges could be applied to future ERP implementations in both the DON and Department of Defense (DOD). The findings are based in part upon interviews and data collected. From the comparison, commonalities exist in ERP implementation challenges between private sector organizations and SSC-SD. Additionally the management techniques used to mitigate those challenges are similar. Finally, due to SSC-SD's financial management structure and appropriated funding constraints, unique obstacles were identified during the implementation. These unique obstacles will be encountered by other Working Capital Funded (WCF) organizations planning to implement ERP on the same scale as SSC-SD. This thesis supports that the implementation of ERP at SSC-SD was a success based on industry comparisons, the goals of Project Cabrillo's business case analysis (BCA), and its Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Act compliancy assessment, January 2002.

As one exact candidate of the higher dimensional black hole, the 5D Ricci-flat Schwarzschild-de Sitter black string space presents something interesting. In this paper, we give a numerical solution to the real scalar field around the Nariai black hole by the polynomial approximation. Unlike the previous tangent approximation, this fitting function makes a perfect match in the leading intermediate region and gives a good description near both the event and the cosmological horizons. We can read from our results that the wave is close to a harmonic one with the tortoise coordinate. Furthermore, with the actual radial coordinate the waves pile up almost equally near the both horizons.

A team of NASA bearing and lubrication experts was assembled to assess the risk for the rolling-element bearings used in the International Space Station (ISS) centrifuge rotor (CR) to seize or otherwise fail to survive for the required 10-year life. The CR was designed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and their subcontractor, NEC Toshiba Space Systems, Ltd. (NTSpace). The NASA team performed a design audit for the most critical rolling-element bearing systems and reviewed the lubricant selected. There is uncertainty regarding the ability of the Braycote 601 grease (Castrol Limited) to reliably provide the 10-year continuous life required without relubrication of the system. The fatigue life of the Rotor Shaft Assembly (RSA) spring loaded face-to-face mount at a 99-percent probability of survival (L1 life) for the ball bearing set was estimated at 700 million hours and the single ball bearing (Row 3) at 58 million hours. These lives satisfy the mission requirements for fatigue. Rolling-element seizure tests on the RSA and fluid slip joint bearings were found unlikely to stop the centrifuge, which can cause damage to the ISS structure. The spin motor encoder duplex angular-contact ball bearings have a hard preload and a large number of small balls have the highest risk of failure. These bearings were not tested for seizure even though they are less tolerant to debris or internal clearance reductions.

This article highlights one aspect of a case study of international educators at Dubai Women's College (DWC), United Arab Emirates (UAE). It examines perceptions of international educators in third space teaching female Emirati, higher-education students in the UAE. Drawing on third space theory (Bhabha, 1994), this study explored the nature of their hybridity and their accommodation processes. Findings reveal that these international educators in third space perceive the salient elements of their experiences are: educators' cultural curiosity, seeing beyond the veil, the global meets the local "here," heading home, and mediating tensions.

Two methods for developing high order single step explicit algorithms on symmetric stencils with data on only one time level are presented. Examples are given for the convection and linearized Euler equations with up to the eighth order accuracy in both space and time in one space dimension, and up to the sixth in two space dimensions. The method of characteristics is generalized to nondiagonalizable hyperbolic systems by using exact local polynominal solutions of the system, and the resulting exact propagator methods automatically incorporate the correct multidimensional wave propagation dynamics. Multivariate Taylor or Cauchy-Kowaleskaya expansions are also used to develop algorithms. Both of these methods can be applied to obtain algorithms of arbitrarily high order for hyperbolic systems in multiple space dimensions. Cross derivatives are included in the local approximations used to develop the algorithms in this paper in order to obtain high order accuracy, and improved isotropy and stability. Efficiency in meeting global error bounds is an important criterion for evaluating algorithms, and the higher order algorithms are shown to be up to several orders of magnitude more efficient even though they are more complex. Stable high order boundary conditions for the linearized Euler equations are developed in one space dimension, and demonstrated in two space dimensions.

In this research prediction methods of artificial neural network and chaos theory are employed to predict daily, weekly and monthly runoff. For this, runoff series data observed at Pole-Kohneh located in the Qareh-Soo River. The nonlinear predictions of chaos are found to be in close agreement with the observed runoff, with high correlation coefficient for daily and weekly time scales. Predicted results of monthly time scale are not satisfying which indicating the chaos behavior in daily and weekly scales. The predicted results of ANN are inferior to chaos for daily and weekly scales but superior to chaos for monthly scale.

This work presents a novel theoretical framework in which gravity emerges not from spacetime curvature alone, as in General Relativity, but from pressure gradients within a compressible vacuum medium. The results are described of an application of multiattribute analysis to the evaluation of high leverage prototyping technologies in the automation and robotics (A and R) areas that might contribute to the Space Station (SS) Freedom baseline design. An implication is that high leverage prototyping is beneficial to the SS Freedom Program as a means for transferring technology from the advanced development program to the baseline program. The process also highlights the tradeoffs to be made between subsidizing high value, low risk technology development versus high value, high risk technology developments. Twenty one A and R Technology tasks spanning a diverse array of technical concepts were evaluated using multiattribute decision analysis. Because of large uncertainties associated with characterizing the technologies, the methodology was modified to incorporate uncertainty. Eight attributes affected the rankings: initial cost, operation cost, crew productivity, safety, resource requirements, growth potential, and spinoff potential. The four attributes of initial cost, operations cost, crew productivity, and safety affected the rankings the most.

Dialogue is an important part of strengthening democratization. However, dialogue has not been fully practiced and prioritized in schools. Schools become important institutions to promote tolerance and dialogue from various traditions or cultural backgrounds. Strengthening dialogue is an important part of the humanist education approach. This research discussed how Kolese Gonzaga High School established a learning system that provides a large space for dialogue. In each activity, the school tries to develop communication skills, learn to understand each other, and also collaborate with various communities. This research focused on two things: (i) the practice of establishing school as a space for dialogue, and (ii) how school can promote dialogue for peace. This research was qualitative research with a case study approach. Informants were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Meanwhile, the data collection techniques used are in-depth interviews, observation, and literature study. Interviews were conducted with school principals, teachers, students, and parents. Dialogue activities are strengthened in various activities at school. Kolese Gonzaga High School establishes dialogue spaces in various fields in the school such as in classrooms, daily activities, and activities outside of school.

This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract Quality by design (QbD) concept is a paradigm for the improvement of botanical injection quality control. In this work, water precipitation process for the manufacturing of Xueshuantong injection, a botanical injection made from Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma, was optimized using a design space approach as a sample. Saponin recovery and total saponin purity (TSP) in supernatant were identified as the critical quality attributes (CQAs) of water precipitation using a risk assessment for all the processes of Xueshuantong injection. An Ishikawa diagram and experiments of fractional factorial design were applied to determine critical process parameters (CPPs). Dry matter content of concentrated extract (DMCC), amount of water added (AWA), and stirring speed (SS) were identified as CPPs. Box-Behnken designed experiments were carried out to develop models between CPPs and process CQAs. Determination coefficients were higher than 0.86 for all the models. High TSP in supernatant can be obtained when DMCC is low and SS is high. Saponin recoveries decreased as DMCC increased. Incomplete collection of supernatant was the main reason for the loss of saponins. Design space was calculated using a Monte-Carlo simulation method with acceptable probability of 0.90. Recommended normal operation region are located in DMCC of 0.38–0.41 g/g, AWA of 3.7–4.9 g/g, and SS of 280–350 rpm, with a probability more than 0.919 to attain CQA criteria. Verification experiment results showed that operating DMCC, SS, and AWA within design space can attain CQA criteria with high probability.

The discussion of Fractional dimensional Hilbert spaces in the context of Haldane exclusion statistics is extended from the case \cite{IG} of $g=1/p$ for the statistical parameter to the case of rational $g=q/p$ with $q,p$-coprime positive integers. The corresponding statistical mechanics for a gas of such particles is constructed. This procedure is used to define the statistical mechanics for particles with irrational $g$. Applications to strongly correlated systems such as the Hubbard and $t-J$ models are discussed.

We consider the inverse problem for the wave equation which consists of determining an unknown space-dependent force function acting on a vibrating structure from Cauchy boundary data. Since only boundary data are used as measurements, the study has importance and significance to non-intrusive and non-destructive testing of materials. This inverse force problem is linear, the solution is unique, but the problem is still ill-posed since, in general, the solution does not exist and, even if it exists, it does not depend continuously upon the input data. Numerically, the finite difference method combined with the Tikhonov regularization are employed in order to obtain a stable solution. Several orders of regularization are investigated. The choice of the regularization parameter is based on the L-curve method. Numerical results show that the solution is accurate for exact data and stable for noisy data. An extension to the case of multiple additive forces is also addressed. In a companion paper, in Part II, the time-dependent force identification will be undertaken.

In this paper we use the new regularity and stability estimates for Alexandrov solutions to Monge-Ampere equations estabilished by G.De Philippis and A.Figalli to provide a global in time existence of distributional solutions to a semigeostrophic equation on the 2-dimensional torus, under very mild assumptions on the initial data. A link with Lagrangian solutions is also discussed.

This is the teal drone cover with a raspberry pi zero case on top. The case is bigger so you can fit custom electronics like a gps module.

I have a wheeled laptop case and needed a way to tidily store some small equipment (battery packs etc). I noticed that there was some wasted space between the handle storage pillars at the rear of the case which would easily accommodate the equipment but no way to hold it in place. So, this device clips between the two pillars to provide a neat and simple way of storing small items in there. I imagine it could be scaled easily enough to fit different cases. There are two different items: one which has a "shelf" to stop the items dropping and the other which doesn't. This gives some flexibility in height.

The classical theory of Toeplitz operators in spaces of analytic functions deals usually with symbols that are bounded measurable functions on the domain in question. A further extension of the theory was made for symbols being unbounded functions, measures, and compactly supported distributions, all of them subject to some restrictions. In the context of a reproducing kernel Hilbert space we propose a certain framework for a `maximally possible' extension of the notion of Toeplitz operators for a `maximally wide' class of `highly singular' symbols. Using the language of sesquilinear forms we describe a certain common pattern for a variety of analytically defined forms which, besides covering all previously considered cases, permits us to introduce a further substantial extension of a class of admissible symbols that generate bounded Toeplitz operators. Although our approach is unified for all reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, for concrete operator consideration in this paper we restrict ourselves to Toeplitz operators acting on the standard Fock (or Segal-Bargmann) space.

We give a generalization of the Beurling-Lax theorem both in the complex and quaternionic settings. We consider in the first case functions meromorphic in the right complex half-plane, and functions slice hypermeromorphic in the right quaternionic half-space in the second case. In both settings we also discuss a unified framework, which includes both the disk and the half-plane for the complex case and the open unit ball and the half-space in the quaternionic setting.

This paper focuses upon the problem of regional interactions in planning movement-to-shelter (MTS) systems. The MTS system envisaged in this research effort is one designed to move urban populations during crises to fallout shelters located in peripheral areas of low target interest. Basic criteria are established for use in defining areas to be evacuated and those to be used as MTS reception centers. The total area to be evacuated includes the urbanized area plus a 10-mile buffer zone. It was assumed that a distance of 50 miles measured from the edge of the urbanized area would be a practical outer bound for the reception region. The resulting 40-mile-wide annulus (50 miles minus the 10-mile buffer zone) was the basis for determining specific reception areas. Possible military targets and otherwise unsuitable land areas (swamps, etc.) were then deleted in identifying usable reception areas within the 40-mile annulus. Applying these criteria to closely located cities such as those of the Central Gulf Coast Region, one soon encounters the problem of overlapping reception areas: those which could be claimed by two or more evacuating cities. This problem is resolved by use of a linear programming model which allocates regional reception space on an optimal basis. Its objective is to allocate evacuating population in a manner that will minimize fatalities.

In support of preflight design loads definition, preliminary water impact scale model are being conducted of space shuttle rocket boosters. The model to be used as well as the instrumentation, test facilities, and test procedures are described for water impact tests being conducted at test conditions to simulate full-scale initial impact at vertical velocities from 65 to 85 ft/sec. zero horizontal velocity, and angles of 0,5, and 10 degrees.
