Extremely rare, unusual directory made up of drawn illustrations of the building street fronts and business establishments of every building on the blocks of the downtown area of San Francisco. Almost all of these buildings were destroyed by the fire of 1906. Published in 11 parts in 1894 and 1895, this copy is complete. The Rocq listing is for parts 4-11; the Norris copy had nine parts. Norris states that this directory is "Very Scarce and valuable." This copy belonged to noted San Francisco historian Margot Patterson Doss, with her signature and address on the front end paper. The illustrations of the buildings are very well done. A unique directory; most surviving copies have only nine of the eleven parts. Another directory was done for Oakland, California (Rocq 817). Has Carey and Hart borders. Ristow's second 1846 issue. The first issue by Mitchell alone, without Tanner's name on the title page. Tanner issued this atlas first in 1836 with engraved maps, then it was taken over by Carey and Hart in 1843 and converted by them to lithographic maps in 1845. In 1846 Mitchell took over the publishing of this atlas and continued until 1849, after which it was published until 1860 by Thomas, Cowperthwait and then Charles DeSilver. This atlas is important in American printing history in that it was the first American atlas to be converted from engraved map plates to lithographic map plates - greatly reducing the cost of production and thus making the book made widely affordable by the general public. The maps are in full color; atlas is bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "Mitchell's Universal Atlas" stamped in gilt on front label. P6103; Ristow page 311. P6103-19.

Prime meridian is Washington. 1848 edition, known as Mitchell's new Universal atlas, without Tanner's name on the title page. Tanner issued this atlas first in 1836 with engraved maps, then it was taken over by Carey and Hart in 1843 and converted by them to lithographic maps in 1845. In 1846 Mitchell took over the publishing of this atlas and continued until 1849. Oregon and Upper California maps show the new boundary of Mexico and the United States resulting from the Mexican War, for the first time. Title page by K. Mitchell was born in 1792 in Connecticut and spent some of his early working years as a teacher. During his teaching years, he became quite dissatisfied with the available textbooks, and this led him to become a writer and publisher. He moved to Philadelphia, a major center for publishing at the time. P6106.

Atlas consists of 26 large folding maps each on 2 sheets joined, manuscript contents pages on front endpaper, maps are hand color in outline, with decorative cartouches, include advertisement for Willdey's instruments and trade goods, some with dedication note. Showing political and administrative boundaries, cities, towns, landmarks, fortifications, battle grounds, rivers, lakes, forests and mountains. Relief shown by hachuers and pictorially. Includes legend, tables, notes and engraved views. Bound in brown embossed calf covers. Prime meridian: London and Ferro. "Tall narrow folio, 26 large folding maps each on 2 sheets joined, manuscript contents pages on front endpaper, maps in contemporary hand colour, cartouches plain, contemporary sheep, some tears and splits as noted. By descent from the library of John Monson, 1st Baron Monson (1693-1748). Lord Monson was an early President of the Board of Trade, a role which had existed in various guises since the mid 17th century. This atlas may have been a useful reference tool for anyone involved in overseas trade, but the maps of British roads, the environs of London and Yorkshire suggest domestic interests – each atlas was made to order. George Willdey’s maps are uncommon. He worked in partnership with mapmakers such as Charles Price and purchased printing plates from other map-makers, some deceased, including the surviving plates for Christopher Saxton’s English county maps, originally published in 1570s. The plates were bought from the widow of Philip Lea in 1732, and the presence of the Yorkshire map here helps us date this atlas. Willdey’s main business was selling toys and luxury goods, including jewellery, trinkets, optical instruments, glass and china. Many of the maps carry advertisements for his other wares, and he advertised his maps for sale as separate sheets rather than in atlas form, which is one reason for the low survival rate (loose sheets of paper have a low survival rate when compared with maps protected in bound volumes). However, we have been able to trace four composite atlases, which must have been bound to order, in libraries around the world, all subtly different. There is an example in the British Library (24 maps); the National Library of Scotland (23 maps); the National Maritime Museum (20 maps) and New York Public Library (20 maps). At 26 maps, the Monson example is the largest we have been able to locate. The core of each atlas comprises maps of the world and continents, and major European countries, but there are variations such as the map of Yorkshire selected by the owner of our atlas.  Individual maps are scattered in institutions worldwide, but they are few in number, and they are relatively uncommon in the marketplace. The maps in the volume comprise: 1. A New and Correct Map of the World laid down according to the newest observations & discoveries in several different projections including the trade winds, monsoons, variation of the compass, and illustrated with a coelestial planisphere, the various systems of Ptolomy, Copernicus, and Tycho Brahe together with ye apearances of the planets &c. . The catalog of the exhibition lists it as "No. 52. Universal Atlas in folio, a most beautiful specimen of the art of transferring and lithographic printing, from the press of P.S. Duval, Philadelphia, transferred by Bourquin." This copy of the atlas was their submission to the Franklin Institute to be considered for the award. It is made up of sheets from the atlas, all uncolored, all oversized, and all taken from various editions of the atlas from 1846 to 1848 (one map is dated 1849, but we believe it was issued in late 1848). It appears that these sheets were offprints that remained in the lithographer's shop and that the atlas was made up from them. These sheets may have been some of the first "pulls" of each map in the various 1846-48 editions. These sheets may have been some of the first "pulls" of each map in the various 1846-48 editions. John Wesley Powell (1834-1902) was a leading figure in the geological explorations of the West and helped establish the federal U.S. Geological Survey in 1879. He also led the Bureau of Ethnology and advocated for better treatment and study of Native American tribes and culture. He wrote a definitive study of the arid western U.S., advocating for thoughtful irrigation and land management practices. Powell predicted that water rights purchased by corporations, rather than tied to the land, would be a major political and environmental issue. John Wesley Powell was a scientific frontiersman. His life reveals the energetic working of a vigorous and independent personality, full of inspiration, power, and enterprise. He was a founder of major scientific organizations, including the National Geographic Society, Geological Society of America, and the Cosmos Club. Powell lived most of his life in Washington, DC. The memoir was written by William Morris Davis (1850-1934) was a prominent professor of geology, geography, and meteorology at Harvard and knew Powell personally.
