A noise reduction circuit for a hearing aid having an adaptive filter for producing a signal which estimates the noise components present in an input signal. The circuit includes a second filter for receiving the noise-estimating signal and modifying it as a function of a user's preference or as a function of an expected noise environment. The circuit also includes a gain control for adjusting the magnitude of the modified noise-estimating signal, thereby allowing for the adjustment of the magnitude of the circuit response. The circuit also includes a signal combiner for combining the input signal with the adjusted noise-estimating signal to produce a noise reduced output signal.

This Memorandum describes a method for minimising the third-octave errors existing between a target sound field and its reproduction elsewhere. The spectrum is modified iteratively by the error spectrum and a new time history is produced. This method of operating in the frequency domain is essentially the dual of the method described in Technical Memorandum FS(F) 679, which used a digital filtering in the time domain. The Exterior Effects Room (EER) is a 39-seat auditorium at the NASA Langley Research Center and was built to support psychoacoustic studies of aircraft community noise. The EER has a real-time simulation environment which includes a three-dimensional sound-reproduction system. This system requires real-time application of equalization filters to compensate for spectral coloration of the sound reproduction due to installation and room effects. This paper describes the efforts taken to develop the equalization filters for use in the real-time sound-reproduction system and the subsequent analysis of the system s acoustic performance. The acoustic performance of the compensated and uncompensated sound-reproduction system is assessed for its crossover performance, its performance under stationary and dynamic conditions, the maximum spatialized sound pressure level it can produce from a single virtual source, and for the spatial uniformity of a generated sound field. Additionally, application examples are given to illustrate the compensated sound-reproduction system performance using recorded aircraft flyovers

BLACK AND WHITE FILMSTRIPS THAT REPRODUCED STILL PICTURES AND SOUND TRACK FROM EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION BROADCASTS WERE USED TO STUDY THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ETV REPRODUCTIONS IN AIDING POOR ACHIEVERS. THE SPECIFIC ADVANTAGE OF SUCH A REPRODUCTION WAS THAT IT COULD BE PACED TO THE LEARNING TEMPO OF THE STUDENTS RATHER THAN USING THE TOO-FAST PACE OF A REGULAR BROADCAST. THE PROJECT WAS DIVIDED INTO TWO PHASES. PHASE 1 CONSISTED OF THE PRODUCTION OF THE FILMSTRIPS, UNIT GUIDES, AND TEACHER AND PUPIL STUDY MATERIALS. PHASE 2 TESTED THE FILMSTRIPS, WHOSE TOPICS WERE GEOGRAPHY AND EARTH STUDY, ON TWO MATCHED GROUPS OF POOR ACHIEVERS IN GRADES 7 AND 8. TWO OTHER MATCHED GROUPS WERE USED AS CONTROL SECTIONS. DUE TO A PROBLEM IN TIME SEQUENCING OF THE ORIGINAL BROADCASTS WHICH DID NOT PERMIT SEQUENCED FILMSTRIPS TO BE PRODUCED, THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PACING STILL PHOTOS AS A FACTOR IN LEARNING WAS NOT EXPLORED. THE INVESTIGATOR DID CONCLUDE THAT FILMSTRIP REPRODUCTION FROM ETV BROADCASTS IS FEASIBLE AND THAT SUCH REPRODUCTIONS CAN SOLVE THE CONFLICT OF BROADCAST AND CLASSROOM TIME SCHEDULES. FROM POST-EXPERIMENTAL ATTITUDE TESTS, THE INVESTIGATOR CONCLUDED THAT PUPILS HAD A MORE FAVORABLE ATTITUDE TOWARD THE SUBJECT IN WHICH THE FILMSTRIPS WERE USED BUT DID NOT NECESSARILY MENTION THE FILMSTRIPS AS A REASON.
