Geoffrey seems to have the devils luck about him as he climbs the social ladder, marries the daughter of an Earl, and is the envy of all high society. Inevitably his luck and good fortune begin to crumble as it slowly becomes apparent who Prince Rimanez truly is. Too much for the 21 st Century? From 1926, comes D.W. Griffith’s most graphic work, THE SORROWS OF SATAN, conceived from Marie Corelli’s popular book of the day.  Described as "Faust in the Roaring 20's," Images of nudity and excess have earned the work notoriety through the decades.   A nightclub scene in the American film version has enough clothing to pass censors. For Europe, the lead female is seen bare-breasted. If you thought it was by Cecil B. DeMille – that’s because it was supposed to be directed by DeMille!   It’s said Griffith did not want to do this film, but Paramount insisted.   Oh well, we lucked out.   SORROWS OF SATAN resulted in the director’s most fully realized film and its popularity has risen considerably in the last 30 years. An IMDb.com review states this about the film: “ The final of three films made by D.W. Griffith at Paramount. A poor writer (Ricardo Cortez) living in poverty desperately wants to marry his girlfriend (Carol Dempster) but the lack of money won't allow it. One day, after cursing God, a man (Adolphe Menjou) appears out of nowhere offering the writer tons of money but there will be a price to pay. This is another retelling of Faust but it manages to be entertaining throughout due in large part to some very good performances. The only downside is that Griffith, who was legendary for refusing to go ahead with technology, edits and shoots this in a way that it seems like a film from 1915 and not one from 1926. Technically the film is pretty flat but Griffith makes for a very fast paced 90-minutes and delivers and effective and chilling ending. The opening sequence of Satan being kicked out of Heaven is also nicely done.” This would be the final role for Carol Dempster. Another IMBd website reviewer states, “ Carol Dempster, the actress Griffith really tried to make a star, starred in almost all 1920's Griffith films up to this point and would vanish from the film scene much more effectively than Garbo would or could after this. Lillian Gish she wasn't. Actually, her pretty but not very beautiful looks help with the story…”
