Thanks to the #100sareepact, I've had the good fortune to be friends with women from different walks of life. Women of different ages, different professions, from different countries. I may never have met them were it not for our common passion for sarees and story telling. I came to Instagram quite late, and when I arrived there I saw many, many profiles of women showcasing their sarees. The phenomena of the #100sareepact has given rise to varied avenues of recognition. Some women were showcasing their work with weaver clusters, some were selling sarees, some were modelling for saree vendors, some wearing their sarees and telling their life stories. I felt like a proud matriarch seeing this hectic activity in the ecosystem and marketplace of Instagram. The saree was front and centre on Instagram on handles of women belonging to the Indian diaspora. While I have a more quiet presence on Instagram, I follow authentic voices on the platform. I'm drawn to content and story telling and Sumitra Selvaraj was building opinion, building awareness and engagement and most of her posts make me chuckle, there's always dry wit on display. We jumped out of social media and met in person last year and safe to say we're not letting go of this friendship and mutual respect we have for each other. The metallization of fibers and textiles using Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) has been of increasing interest for its ability to create novel material surface properties, create conductive materials, and otherwise functionalize materials. In 2009, it was shown that through modification of the ALD process, metal elements could be infiltrated within (rather than simply coating) biological materials. This metal infiltration was shown to dramatically enhance the mechanical properties of biological materials. Native spider silk fibers are unparalleled in their combination of mechanical strength and strain, and these fibers exhibited 2-fold increase in strain to breakage, and 4.5-fold increase in strength when infiltrated with zinc, titanium, or aluminum. Unfortunately, the mechanisms leading to this mechanical improvement, and the limits thereof, have been largely unexplored. This is due to an inability to replicate to the initial results of the 2009 work by independent labs. We sought to replicate the original work, and to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the metallization-induced mechanical enhancement of spider silk fibers.

Robust ultrathin multilayer films of silk fibroin were fabricated by spin coating and spin-assisted layer-by-layer assembly and their mechanical properties were studied both in tensile and compression modes for the first time. The ultrathin films were characterized by a high elastic modulus of 6-8 GPa (after treatment with methanol) with the ultimate tensile strength reaching 100 MPa. The superior toughness is also many times higher than that usually observed for conventional polymer composites (328 kJ m[expn -3] for the silk material studied here versus typical values of 100 kJ m[expn -3]). These outstanding properties are suggested to be caused by the gradual development of the self-reinforcing microstructure of highly crystalline b-sheets, serving as reinforcing fillers and physical crosslinks, a process that is well known for bulk silk materials but it is demonstrated here to occur in ultrathin films as well, despite their limited dimensions. However, the confined state within films thinner than the lengths of the extended domains causes a significantly reduced elasticity which should be considered in the design of nanosized films from silk materials. Such regenerated silk fibroin films with outstanding mechanical strength have potential applications in microscale biodevices, biocompatible implants, and synthetic coatings for artificial skin.

This was an armband worn by individuals who had received a vaccination (presumably smallpox) in the early 20th century. It was collected from a scrapbook from an architecture student at the University of Illinois. 

This project set out to measure, analyze and interpret as well as practically deploy the huge range in mechanical behaviour between different silk species and intra-species varieties. In particular, I set out to formulate a clear-cut link between a silks quality its internal structure and its consequent properties. Here two specific tracks were followed, namely thermal behaviour and melt behaviour. In addition, the uses of different silks in composites with designed properties were examined. The 1st research project (WP1) used thermal analytical methods to truth specific molecular signatures that allow us to differentiate silk qualities. For this, DMTA measurements were correlated with changes in molecular and morphological structure resulting from external factors such as diet rearing spinning conditions and storage.

This article is from BMB Reports , volume 47 . Abstract Corn silk (CS) has long been consumed as a traditional herb in Korea. Maysin is a major flavonoid of CS. The effects of maysin on macrophage activation were evaluated, using the murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells. Maysin was isolated from CS by methanol extraction, and preparative C18 reverse phase column chromatography. Maysin was nontoxic up to 100 μg/ml, and dose-dependently increased TNF-α secretion and iNOS production by 11.2- and 4.2-fold, respectively, compared to untreated control. The activation and subsequent nuclear translocation of NF-κB was substantially enhanced upon treatment with maysin (1-100 μg/ml). Maysin also stimulated the phosphorylation of Akt and MAPKs (ERK, JNK). These results indicated that maysin activates macrophages to secrete TNF-α and induce iNOS expression, via the activation of the Akt, NF-κB and MAPKs signaling pathways. These results suggest for the first time that maysin can be a new immunomodulator, enhancing the early innate immunity. [BMB Reports 2014; 47(7): 382-387]
