Results are presented of subjective and quantitative tests describing the results of interference to a particular digital television system from a frequency modulated (FM) television system, and for interference to an FM television system from a digital television system.

On the basis of the kinetic equation with selfconsistent relativistic mean fields acting on baryons and antibaryons, we study dynamical response of the nucleus to an antiproton implanted in its interior. By solving numerically the time-dependent Vlasov equation, we show that the compressed state is formed on a rather short time scale of about 4-10 fm/c. This justifies the assumption, that the antiproton annihilation may happen in the compressed nuclear environment. The evolution of the nucleus after antiproton annihilation is described by the same kinetic equation including collision terms. We show, that nucleon kinetic energy spectra and the total invariant mass distributions of produced mesons are quite sensitive observables to the antiproton annihilation in the compressed nucleus.

The method of synthesis of Barker signals’ on generalized matrix of autocorrelation function has been used. The details of “inner” structure of Barker’s signals with N = 5;7;11;13, have been shown, which are used for the synthesis of Barker signals’ with components noquantized in duration. Binary phase manipulated signals with length of code N [8;11], the side peaks of which don’t exceed the one on module have been discovered. The signals with the length of code N = 15, which, under appropriate processing, on quadratic criterion exceed the non existing Barker’s signals with N = 15 have been found

Tones and binary information are transmitted as phase variations on a carrier wave of constant amplitude and frequency. The carrier and tones are applied to a balanced modulator for deriving an output signal including a pair of sidebands relative to the carrier. The carrier is phase modulated by a digital signal so that it is + or - 90 deg out of phase with the predetermined phase of the carrier. The carrier is combined in an algebraic summing device with the phase modulated signal and the balanced modulator output signal. The output of the algebraic summing device is hard limited to derive a constant amplitude and frequency signal having very narrow bandwidth requirements. At a receiver, the tones and binary data are detected with a phase locked loop having a voltage controlled oscillator driving a pair of orthogonal detection channels.

This study evaluates the Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) support the Army receives from national systems. It reviews SIGINT support provided during Operation Joint Endeavor (1995) and during Operation Desert Capture II (1994) using the principles of intelligence defined in JCS Publication 24) as criteria. The existing systems for dissemination from the national level are insufficient to ensure consistent, rapid delivery of this information for timely prosecution of potential targets below the strategic or operational level of war. This study also reviews the systems and organizations that the Army has which can directly access current SIGINT disseminated from national systems. Analysis indicated that changes are possible and necessary to ensure rapid, timely delivery of SIGINT from national systems to Army commanders at division and corps on or before the decisive moment on the battlefield. This study advocates that DoD and NSA must develop, implement and enforce a comprehensive set of standards for SIGINT data dissemination. They must focus on narrowing the number of paths for dissemination to far fewer intelligence broadcasts that deliver the original SIGINT source information with other associated intelligence. The Army needs to train more soldiers on the capabilities of the national systems and on how to more accurately state their commanders' requirements so they can be satisfied by national systems.

Specifically, the cyclostationary pilot signature of an IEEE 802.16e standard compliant waveform is investigated. The proposed scheme performs waveform identification through a preamble cross-correlation technique. Classification is achieved through the use of a pilot cross-correlation technique in combination with an algorithm called the fast Fourier transform accumulation method that performs cyclostationary feature extraction in order to determine the cyclic prefix of the IEEE 802.16e waveform. Similar methods are then used for determining other OFDMA waveform parameters, such as the FFT size, Segment number and IDcell. The proposed scheme is implemented with MATLAB simulation code and the significant results of the simulation are presented and discussed. The MATLAB simulation validated the preamble cross-correlation process and the pilot cross-correlation technique in conjunction with the fast Fourier transform accumulation method as effective methods of signal identification and classification, respectively.

Animation is ubiquitous in visualization systems, and a common technique for creating these animations is the transition. In the transition approach, animations are created by smoothly interpolating a visual attribute between a start and end value, reaching the end value after a specified duration. This approach works well when each transition for an attribute is allowed to finish before the next is triggered, but performs poorly when a new transition is triggered before the current transition has finished. In particular, interruptions introduce velocity discontinuities, and frequent interruptions can slow down the resulting animation. To solve these problems, we model the problem of animation as a signal processing problem. In our technique, animations are produced by transformations of signals, or functions over time. In particular, an animation is produced by transforming an input signal, a function from time to target attribute value, into an output signal, a function from time to displayed attribute value. We show that well-known signal-processing techniques can be applied to produce animations that are free from velocity discontinuities even when interrupted.

Multilevel amplitude-shift-keying (MASK) and quadrature amplitude-shift-keying (QASK) as signaling techniques for multilevel digital communications systems, and the problem of providing symbol synchronization in the receivers of such systems are discussed. A technique is presented for extracting symbol sync from an MASK or QASK signal. The scheme is a generalization of the data transition tracking loop used in PSK systems. The performance of the loop was analyzed in terms of its mean-squared jitter and its effects on the data detection process in MASK and QASK systems.

In this final report we summarize our research accomplishments under this grant: (a) research on our multiresolution estimation methodology to solve a variety of difficult image and large scale data assimilation problems and to extend the theoretical domain of applicability of our methodology considerably to allow for the fusion of multisensor data; (b) the development of several new methods involving synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data including multiresolution segmentation and compression algorithms and an estimation-theoretic approach to moving target SAR image formation; (c) the development of a new nonlinear multiresolution image evolution algorithm that produces extremely robust image segmentations; (d) the development of a new variation on so-called matching pursuit methods with application to robust and stable feature extraction and recognition of objects; and (e) the development of hierarchical and wavelet-based methods for the design of joint detection algorithms for multiple access communication in the presence of highly correlated user signals. In addition a number of significant transitions and interactions resulting from our work are described.

Phillip Romilly is a poor art teacher in London. He finds out that his wealthy cousin Douglas has been seeing his girl friend Beatrice behind his back. He strangles Douglas, throws him in the canal, and assumes his identity. Douglas had booked passage to America for the next day, so after a pleasant sea voyage Phillip arrives at the Waldorf Hotel in New York as Douglas Romilly. An hour after checking in he disappears again, and assumes yet another identity, one that his cousin had set up for himself. Douglas was facing massive financial problems, and he, too, had planned to avoid his problems by getting lost in the crowd in New York. Now, in chapter two…. (Summary by Maikki)

2Great Impersonation

E. Phillips Oppenheim, an English novelist created well in excess of 100 novels and 30 plus collections of short stories. Most of his tales are thrillers and espionage. The Great Impersonation was written following World War I and is considered by many to be perhaps his best novel. The story focuses on German espionage in England prior to the start of World War I. The tale centers on two characters that are almost identical in appearance. Indeed, while both attend the same school in England, they are often mistaken for one another. One character is Sir Everard Dominey, an English baronet who enjoys the “good life” but falls into disfavor when he is accused of murdering Roger Unthank. Unthank, of the same village, has an infatuation for Dominey’s wife, Rosamund, and attacks Dominey. Dominey comes before his wife bloody and ragged after the struggle with Unthank. The spectacle renders her unbalanced. This is more than Dominey can bear and he goes on a long travel and drinking binge spanning years. Dominey’s wife threatens to kill him if he ever returns. The second character is Baron Leopold von Ragastein, a German nobleman. Von Ragastein has fallen into disrespect with the Kaiser for his affair with a Hungarian princess and subsequent killing of her nobleman husband in a duel. He is banished to a minor government position in East Africa as punishment. A chance encounter between Dominey and von Ragastein in German East Africa sets the pretext for the story. Von Ragastein returns to England as Dominey, to regain his position in society, and serve Germany by influencing England to keep out of the coming conflict. There is one problem however: there are some, including Dominey’s wife, who are not convinced that Sir Everard Dominey is really who he claims to be. The Zeppelin’s Passenger is a tale of German espionage in England during World War I. Dreymarsh is a fictional “backwater” area in England with no apparent military value. The story begins with Dreymarsh residents discovering an observation car from a German zeppelin along with a Homburg hat near Dreymarsh. The mystery is further complicated when an Englishman, Mr. Hamar Lessingham, presents himself at Mainsail Haul which is the residence of Sir Henry Cranston. Lessingham bears with him, hand-carried letters from Major Richard Halstead, and a British prisoner of war in Germany. He presents them to Halstead’s sister, Phillipa and Helen, Halstead’s fiancée who have had no word of Richard’s fate and are deeply concerned. Phillipa, Sir Henry’s wife, is smitten with Lessingham, after Sir Henry appears to her to be a coward since he will not become involved in the war effort. Lessingham appears to be the perfect gentlemen but he is not who he pretends to be. Eventually, Phillipa and Helen discover that the delivery of Halstead’s letters come with a price. All becomes clear near the end to discover the secret of Lessingham, Sir Henry, and Mainsail Haul. (Summary by Tom Weiss)

Wrayson soon learns that the young lady is the estranged older daughter of a club acquaintance, retired Colonel Fitzmaurice. He also discovers that he has fallen in love with her. The big question however, has he fallen for a murderess? How can he discover the truth? The resulting scandal causes Norgate to be recalled. On the way home, he meets a German gentleman, Selingman, who claims to be a crockery salesman. But, Selingman is not what he appears to be.
