2Exploring The Link Between Sibling Aggression, Norms About The Use Of Aggression, And Emotional Regulation
By Natalie Harrison
Sibling aggression is one of the most common forms of family violence. Despite this, society often views the behaviours as normal and acceptable (Khan & Rogers, 2015). If the same behaviours were to occur between intimate partners, they would be viewed as abusive (Caspi, 2012). For this reason, there is currently a research interest into the behaviour, and lots of the literature in this area is or has been exploring the prevalence, consequences of and associated risk factors. Research in this area has generally focused impacts to health (e.g., depression, anxiety) and behaviours in future interpersonal relationships. This project aims to delve a little deeper, looking at links with emotional regulation, impulse control and attitudes / beliefs towards aggression. Some of the motivations behind sibling aggression have been identified as poor emotional regulation. That is, children are being aggressive towards one another as they firstly, do not have the skills to solve conflict in prosocial ways, and secondly, as they do not know how to manage negative emotions (such as anger and frustration). However, for lots of children, the use of aggression with a sibling declines with age. It would be interesting to see how those who have engaged / are still engaging in this behaviour manage their emotions, impulses and their use of general aggression when they reach adulthood. This study is quantitative and online and aims to explore the links between sibling aggression in childhood, attitudes condoning the use of aggression, and emotional regulation.

3A Retrospective Exploration Of Experiences Of Sibling Aggression
By Natalie Harrison and Deborah Earnshaw
Sibling aggression is one of the most common forms of family violence, with prevalence rates as high as 91% (Roscoe et al., 1987). Despite this, society often views the behaviours as normal and acceptable (Khan & Rogers, 2015). If the same behaviours were to occur between intimate partners, they would be viewed as abusive (Caspi, 2012). For this reason, there is currently a research interest into this form of family violence, with much of the literature in this area exploring the prevalence, consequences of and risk factors for sibling aggression. Whilst the research literature is currently focused on the aforementioned factors, little has focused on the experiences of those that have experienced this form of aggression, whether that be perpetrators and / or victims of the behaviours. However, the prevalence rates of the behaviours are consistently high (e.g., Peng et al., 2022; Toseeb & Wolke, 2022). This, along with the documented negative outcomes of experiencing sibling aggression show that the behaviours are or can be problematic. However, one key problem with prevalence rates is that they often focus on the presence of specific behaviours (e.g., pushing, shoving) to categorise people into having experienced or not experienced this form of abuse (e.g., Relva et al., 2013). This is problematic, as rough-and-tumble play, or play fighting is common among siblings, and behaviours that, whilst similar on the surface, lack the same intent to harm that aggression does (Pellegrini & Smith, 1998). It is therefore important to explore people’s experiences of sibling aggression further. The findings have the potential to not only provide an academic insight into this form of family violence, but also to help inform interventions to help those involved. Study aim The purpose of the study is to explore and understand the retrospective experience of sibling aggression. The goal is not to uncover true recollections of the aggression that participants experience, but to explore how participants understand and make sense of their experiences, similar to work done by McDonald and Martinez (2017). The findings will be of interest to those working with these individuals in helping them to recover from their experiences, and academic audiences more generally. It will use an online questionnaire that contains closed and open-ended questions, however it is primarily qualitative in nature. Questions are a mixture of open and closed, allowing participants to expand on the answers that they provide. Questions surround six different themes. These include family structure and relationships, sibling play fighting behaviours, arguments and disagreements, escalation behaviours, fighting with a sibling and parental involvement. Data collection and analysis have already taken place.

5ERIC ED400105: Parental Beliefs Concerning Sibling Aggression At Home: Maternal Reports.
By ERIC
Sibling conflicts are formative opportunities for children to learn constructive conflict strategies such as negotiation and compromise; however, they also provide a forum for learning destructive strategies such as verbal and physical aggression. This study explored mothers' perceptions about how frequent, serious, and typical sibling aggression is; parental responses to aggression, including intervention strategies and emotional response; and links between parental response strategies, parents' evaluations of these strategies, and the frequency of sibling aggression. Open-ended home interviews were conducted with 30 mothers who have one preschool-age child and at least one older sibling. Mothers estimated that sibling aggression occurred an average of several times per week and that it was usually "not serious." The mothers' most common emotional response was anger, and they used a variety of strategies toward the aggression, including discussion, separation, simple commands, and punishment. Mothers who described using more high- than low-power intervention reported more frequent sibling aggression; overall, mothers felt that calm discussion was most effective. They were also more optimistic that physical aggression rather than verbal aggression would decline over time. (Contains 12 references.) (Author/EV)
