The central idea of compressed sensing is to exploit the fact that most signals of interest are sparse in some domain and use this to reduce the number of measurements to encode. However, if the sparsity of the input signal is not precisely known, but known to lie within a specified range, compressed sensing as such cannot exploit this fact and would need to use the same number of measurements even for a very sparse signal. In this paper, we propose a novel method called Compressed Shattering to adapt compressed sensing to the specified sparsity range, without changing the sensing matrix by creating shattered signals which have fixed sparsity. This is accomplished by first suitably permuting the input spectrum and then using a filter bank to create fixed sparsity shattered signals. By ensuring that all the shattered signals are utmost 1-sparse, we make use of a simple but efficient deterministic sensing matrix to yield very low number of measurements. For a discrete-time signal of length 1000, with a sparsity range of $5 - 25$, traditional compressed sensing requires $175$ measurements, whereas Compressed Shattering would only need $20 - 100$ measurements.

The origin of grain size distribution in the interstellar medium is one of the most fundamental problems in the interstellar physics. In the Milky Way, smaller grains are more abundant in number, but their origins are not necessarily specified and quantified. One of the most efficient drivers of small grain production is interstellar turbulence, in which dust grains can acquire relative velocities large enough to be shattered. Applying the framework of shattering developed in previous papers, we show that small ($a\la 0.01~\micron$) grains reach the abundance level observed in the Milky Way in $\sim 10^8$ yr (i.e. within the grain lifetime) by shattering in warm neutral medium. We also show that if part of grains experience additional shattering in warm ionized medium, carbonaceous grains with $a\sim 0.01~\micron$ are redistributed into smaller sizes. This could explain the relative enhancement of very small carbonaceous grains with $a\sim 3$--100 \AA. Our theory also explains the ubiquitous association between large grains and very small grains naturally. Some tests for our theory are proposed in terms of the metallicity dependence.

A theoretical study of ice crystal/shock layer interaction has been carried out in order to assess the relative kinetic energy of an ice crystal upon impact with a hypersonic vehicle. A dynamic fracture criterion has been developed which predicts the size of the ice crystal fragments formed at the vehicle bow shock. An analysis of the ice crystal breakup predicts that the outer fragments continue to shatter and prevent the shock layer gas from penetrating the fragment cloud. The fragment cloud is then treated as a deformable fluid drop, and the reduced impact velocity due to lateral spreading is determined.

Shattering the “Shell of Constraint” in Angola: U.S. Covert Collusion with Apartheid South Africa, 1974-1976 by Delia A. Solomon An abstract of a thesis submitted to the Faculty of Emory College of Arts and Sciences of Emory University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honors This thesis explores the period from 1974 to 1976 when Angola gained its independence from Portugal but also became embroiled in a civil conflict among three rival liberation movements. Whereas previous historiography has focused on how different international actors, including the United States and the Soviet Union, came to support the three Angolan factions along the Cold War ideological divide, this thesis focuses on another little-discussed and highly sensitive development unfolding concurrently. This work examines the U.S. government’s decision to covertly collude with the apartheid regime in Pretoria in encouraging and orchestrating a South African invasion of Angola. Ultimately, this military incursion failed, the U.S. Congress opted to terminate funding for its clandestine Angola program and South African troops were defeated at the hands of the Cuban-supported liberation movement. Tragically, such international interventions further exacerbated an Angolan conflict that would drag on, with brief interludes, until 2002. The U.S. government subsequently and vehemently denied it had ever played any role in encouraging South Africa’s military intervention in Angola. Meanwhile, South African leaders evinced sentiments of betrayal and abandonment by the United States. This thesis will attempt to marshal recently declassified primary source materials and archival evidence to reach beyond what scholar Robin Hallett calls the “official smoke screen” of “stringent censorship, governmental denials and simple lies” about these developments. Holding both the South African and the U.S. sides of the relationship within the same frame of analysis, this thesis seeks to illuminate the internal architecture of covert collusion. The goal is to understand, as much as is currently possible, the structural and contingent factors and flaws that drove the United States and apartheid South Africa together into a joint, but ultimately unsuccessful, military venture in Angola; how did “the unthinkable come to emerge under the guise of wisdom and prudence?”

This article attempts to show an adolescent boy's continuing process of self-realisation through his disillusionment with the bleak reality of Dublin in the early twentieth century in the short story "Araby" by James Joyce. Brought up in the drab and deadening surroundings with his uncle and aunt in conservative Catholic cultures, the lonely sensitive boy finds no outlets to express his feelings. Torn between harsh reality and imagination, the boy searches light and a relish of romance. Amidst the darkness, a girl, Mangan's sister, is the only light in his romantic vision. The boy, however, wishes to win her over by bringing her a gift from Araby, an oriental bazaar, which is also an epitome of ideal beauty, love and romance to him. But as he grows up, he discovers that the bazaar is beset by difficulties of the adult world where he finds no way to dream. There he is exposed to a new odious situation which he never thought before. And he undergoes a shattering epiphany which results in realisation and maturation. Indeed, here Joyce keenly evinces how a young boy gains sharp insights into life and reality.
