Helicopter drones're being used to search for sharks in the water on both coasts of the United States. Using the drone cuts patrol times down from two hours to just thirty minutes. After spotting the sharks, lifeguards and police try to figure out the shark's size and how aggressive it is, info they consider when trying to decide wether or not to keep a beach open. A recent study found it's way more effective to track sharks using drones and an acoustic tag rather than the old method of GPS tracking. The drones're also being used to track shark migration patterns, giving biologists more information about how the populations can be preserved.

Great white sharks are swimming farther and deeper in the Pacific and Indian oceans than the sharks in the Atlantic, according to new research.Researchers in Massachusetts say some of the 32 sharks they tracked between 2009 and 2014 ended up as far east as the Azores, more than 2,300 miles from where most of they were tagged in Cape Cod.They also were found to make frequent deep dives â as far down as 3,700 feet â and spend more time at those dark depths than previous studies in the Atlantic suggest.The team included scientists from the state Division of Marine Fisheries, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Its findings were published in Marine Ecology Progress Series, a prominent scientific journal.

One of a series of films in the Eastman Kodak Film Library, this silent, tinted film "Shark Fishing" shows shark hunting circa the early 1930s. The Eastman Kodak Film Library, also known as the Kodascope Library, offered more than 500 dramatic, educational and documentary films for loan, rent and for sale. This particular film was probably shot in Mexico or the Gulf of California, although the exact location is unclear because the film is missing the main titles.This film begins with images of fishermen fixing nets (:27) and then setting sail in a small fishing boat (:30). At (:59) they fish for bait, which they will use to catch sharks. At (1:19) they deploy their nets and show off a spotted eagle ray (1:24) and salt water crayfish (1:47), a porpoise, as well as some barracuda including what appears to be baby or juvenile sharks (2:08). At (3:26) an adult shark that has been caught in the net is shown off. At (4:30) the harvested bait is cut up, and at (5:17) they begin trawling for sharks. (Note: A trawl is a large net that is pulled through the water column or along the seabed. This fishing gear is typically used to catch fish or shrimp. Trawling is frowned upon in the modern world because it is a very indiscriminate form of fishing.) At (5:55) a shark is pulled from the water. At (6:46) a shark's mouth is shown clearly, with the multiple rows of teeth visible. At (7:58) seven distinct rows of teeth are shown off. At (8:10), the cleaning and skinning of an adult shark is shown. At (9:47), shark fins are shown being harvested and dried as food. At (10:50) shark skin leather is seen being processed and tanned, and used for fashion, shoes, luggage and other purposes. This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract Conservation efforts aimed at the whale shark, Rhincodon typus, remain limited by a lack of basic information on most aspects of its ecology, including global population structure, population sizes and movement patterns. Here we report on the movements of 47 Red Sea whale sharks fitted with three types of satellite transmitting tags from 2009–2011. Most of these sharks were tagged at a single aggregation site near Al-Lith, on the central coast of the Saudi Arabian Red Sea. Individuals encountered at this site were all juveniles based on size estimates ranging from 2.5–7 m total length with a sex ratio of approximately 1∶1. All other known aggregation sites for juvenile whale sharks are dominated by males. Results from tagging efforts showed that most individuals remained in the southern Red Sea and that some sharks returned to the same location in subsequent years. Diving data were recorded by 37 tags, revealing frequent deep dives to at least 500 m and as deep as 1360 m. The unique temperature-depth profiles of the Red Sea confirmed that several whale sharks moved out of the Red Sea while tagged. The wide-ranging horizontal movements of these individuals highlight the need for multinational, cooperative efforts to conserve R. typus populations in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean.
