While training for a triathlon back in 2000, Chuck Anderson of Alabama was attacked by a shark. He survived the attack, losing a hand – but not his love for the water. He shared his story on Doctor Radio’s Emergency Medicine show, with Dr. Billy Goldberg & Dr. Howard Greller on SiriusXM Channel 81. They've attacked 11 people off the coast of North and South Carolina this year and shark expert Samuel Gruber says it's weird. Gruber says the advice from the National Park Service isn't doing much to help. Gruber says there is only one guaranteed way to avoid sharks. The Florida Program for Shark Research says it could be the drought which reduces the amount of fresh water making it to the sea and creates an environment along the shore where higher salt levels attract more fish....which brings in the sharks.

This pre-analysis plan outlines a replication and extension of one of the most prominent irrelevant events studies—the effect of shark attacks on voter support for President Woodrow Wilson in New Jersey during his 1916 re-election campaign. Achen and Bartels (2004, 2016, 2018) assert that New Jersey voters in beach communities voted for Wilson at lower rates following a series of deadly shark attacks that summer. Specifically, Achen and Bartels argue these shark attacks resulted in a major decline in tourism (and thus consumer spending) on the Jersey Shore and that these negative economic conditions inspired voters to punish Wilson. In contrast, Fowler and Hall (2018) criticize measurement and modelling choices made by Achen and Bartels and argue that there exists no consistent relationship between these shark attacks and the 1916 presidential election returns. We revisit this case to introduce new data that better maps onto the theoretical mechanism Achen and Bartels advance to link shark attacks to election returns: the negative economic consequences of shark attacks on tourism (2016, 118-121; 2018, 1438-1440). Whereas both Achen and Bartels and Fowler and Hall measure communities’ susceptibility to economic harm following the shark attacks with indicators for their proximity to the beach, we do so by also including information about the size of the hotel industry—establishments critical to the presence of tourism in a locality, especially in the early 20th century when transportation options were slower and more limited than in modern day—in each community. We utilize this new measure to replicate and extend the original analyses of Achen and Bartels and Fowler and Hall at the county- and town-levels. We anticipate our study can bring clarity to some of the disagreements between the two sets of studies by assessing whether the effect of shark attacks on election returns strengthens or weakens after incorporating a measure that better reflects communities’ relative reliance on tourist activity and consequent economic pain.

This paper presents the comparisons of different classifiers on predicting Shark attack fatalities. In this study, we are comparing two classifiers which are Support vector machines (SVMs) and Bayes Point Machines (BPMs) on Shark attacks dataset. The comparison of the classifiers were based on the accuracy, recall, precision and F1-score as the performance measurement. The results obtained from this study showed that BPMs predicted the fatality of shack attack victim experiment with higher accuracy and precision than the SVMs because BPMs have “average” identifier which can minimize the probabilistic error measure. From this experiment, it is concluded that BPMs are more suitable in predicting fatality of shark attack victim as BPMs is an improvement of SVMs.

A shark's bitten two teenagers in separate attacks Sunday. They both happened on the same stretch of beach on Oak Island in North Carolina. Television station WECT-6 says the Mayor of Oak Island told them the girl lost part of her arm and could lose her left leg. About an hour later, a 16-year old boy lost an arm to a shark bite in the same area. Oak Island's about 30 minutes south of Wilmington, North Carolina. The county sheriff's office began patrolling the coast in a helicopter after the attacks, and swimmers were being urged to stay out of the water.

The U.S. had the most shark attacks world-wide in 2020, but how many attacks actually happen?

This list of shark attacks was prepared from the documented file in the Division of Fishes, United States National Museum, under the sponsorship of the Biology Branch of the Office of Naval Research. Members of the AIBS Shark Research Panel are kept informed of current shark incidents in all parts of the world by means of five clipping or press-cutting services, three of which are subscribed to by Cornell University and two by the Smithsonian Institution. The assistance of these two institutions, as well as of all persons who have cooperated in supplying documentation on individual cases of attack, is gratefully acknowledged.
