There is a big problem in San Francisco Bay: A number of sharks and other fish are washing ashore dead. Shark Week has been running for 29 years and this year will be its 30th year running as it had educated, inspired, scared and trick many people over its tenure. Shark Week seeks to educate and entertain; however, 3 years ago, Discovery (the company who puts on Shark Week) focused more in the entertainment rather than the education. There was a period of a few years where the programming focused more on fake documentaries rather than education on sharks. For example, the was a program that said the megalodon existed and was targeting humans. Discovery barely told the audience that the episode was fake. It caused a lot of fear and a lot of anger from shark biologists, such as Dr. David Shiffman.David joins me on the program today to discuss the 30-year Legacy of Shark Week as we discuss the good, the bad and the ugly parts of that legacy. We also go through some of the interesting previews of this week's programming. Shark species are being fished unsustainably all around the world and protections in sharks need to increase to track where these species are being bought and consumed. Tracking their trade can be difficult, but one tool that is available is CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. A recent vote during the 19th convention added 54 shark species on the CITES Appendix II. The objective was to design a remotely piloted vehicle which is capable of gathering in-flight pressure distribution data on a lifting test specimen, and then test the design by constructing a subscale demonstrator, to prove the flight worthiness of the concept. The technology demonstrator was scheduled for takeoff at approximately, 7:20 AM on Thursday April 27th. There was a light wind from the southeast. The plane was hand-launched and made an initial dip, most likely due to the poor trim conditions at launch. It then began to climb and bank into a left turn. The aircraft climbed to an altitude of approximately 150 ft and circled. The plane flew for several minutes and at times appeared to bump around, which was due to thermal activity disrupting the flight of the aircraft. The aircraft was brought slowly down in a power-off condition and glided in for a belly landing and landed without incident. Results of the flight test proved the general capability of the design to maintain flight stability throughout the take off, cruise, turning, and landing flight regimes. We were not able to demonstrate stability with the test specimen in place as the control surfaces designed to counteract the instabilities induced in the static system, winglets and ailerons, were not included.

Volume 3: Analysis of the Sexual Impulse; Love and Pain In the study of Love and Pain I have discussed the sources of those aberrations which are commonly called, not altogether happily, "sadism" and "masochism." Here we are brought before the most extreme and perhaps the most widely known group of sexual perversions. I have considered them from the medico-legal standpoint, because that has already been done by other writers whose works are accessible. I have preferred to show how these aberrations may be explained; how they may be linked on to normal and fundamental aspects of the sexual impulse; and, indeed, in their elementary forms, may themselves be regarded as normal. In some degree they are present, in every case, at some point of sexual development; their threads are subtly woven in and out of the whole psychological process of sex. I have made no attempt to reduce their complexity to a simplicity that would be fallacious. I hope that my attempt to unravel these long and tangled threads will be found to make them fairly clear. In the third study, on The Sexual Impulse in Women, we approach a practical question of applied sexual psychology, and a question of the first importance. No doubt the sex impulse in men is of great moment from the social point of view. It is, however, fairly obvious and well understood. The impulse in women is not only of at least equal moment, but it is far more obscure. The natural difficulties of the subject have been increased by the assumption of most writers who have touched it—casually and hurriedly, for the most part—that the only differences to be sought in the sexual impulse in man and in woman are quantitative differences. I have pointed out that we may more profitably seek for qualitative differences, and have endeavored to indicate such of these differences as seem to be of significance. - Summary by Havelock Ellis
