Dr. Angelica Lang knows most of the people she sees have to keep working, even if they have shoulder pain. As an assistant professor at the University of Saskatchewan and director of the Musculoskeletal and Ergonomics Lab at the Canadian Centre for Rural and Agricultural Health, Lang's goal is to reduce that pain - keeping patients on the job. \"A lot of daily life has to be done with your hands,\" she said. \"The base of that is your shoulder. It allows you to position your hand in all these different ways.\" Lang knows the importance of movement. She grew up in Melfort, Sask., playing hockey, soccer, volleyball, along with track and field. A Huskies track athlete, she found her calling in kinesiology, leading her to a specialization in the clinical biomechanics of the shoulder. Her passion for understanding the shoulder, a joint unique in its movement and demands, drove her towards an MSc in Biomechanics under Dr. Clark Dickerson, a shoulder expert. \"This combines math, which I already liked, with movement, which I'm really getting into,\" she said. \"How you perform your work, how you get injured at work, or how a different disorder might influence your movement, and then cause a functional problem.\" Lang said at least 40 per cent of people who suffer from a rotator cuff injury still endure shoulder pain up to a year later. That pain can cause sleep issues, and eventually it becomes unsustainable. \"My question is, does it matter how long you've had pain?\" she said. \"Is it the way that they move that's setting them up to not necessarily get better?\" Her laboratory is one of the first to look at the time elapsed since an initial injury, and the role of ongoing shoulder pain as a confounding or influencing factor in that patient's recovery. \"Once the pain happens, there's some sort of compensation to avoid these painful positions,\" said Lang, whose research team is studying 60 people from Saskatoon and rural Saskatchewan, to assess differences in shoulder pain. A significant part of Lang's work involves the musculoskeletal health of breast cancer survivors, particularly those who've undergone mastectomies and reconstructions. \"It's fairly well documented that breast cancer survivors have upper limb dysfunction after their treatment,\" Lang said. \"I'm interested in what that means for their functional abilities.\" Participants in those studies often make periodic trips to Saskatoon, for assessments at the Musculoskeletal and Ergonomics Lab at the Canadian Centre for Rural and Agricultural Health. In this episode, Lang shows us the \"Rotopod\" farm equipment simulator, designed to simulate the seated position farmers often stay in for long hours during seeding, spraying and harvest. Her team examines movement and biomechanics in agricultural settings, particularly how whole body vibrations from machinery affect farmers. They use advanced motion tracking systems, like the Vicon motion capture system and Inertial Measurement Units, to study body movement in various scenarios, both in the lab and when research crews drive to farms and mines across Saskatchewan, to observe work duties in the field. Last summer, her team visited farmers on the job near Aylesbury, Biggar, Clavet, and Debden, Saskatchewan. They tracked their movement as they performed five tasks, including using an overhead drill, lifting a shovel, climbing and dumping a heavy bag, and pruning a shrub. Lang and a pair of graduate students watched farmers put cattle through a squeeze chute - a task that can be challenging for both the operator and the animal. \"It's something we never would have been able to measure had we only had them come to the lab,\" said Lang. \"By being able to be specific to their job and make the recommendations specific to farming demands, hopefully that will help.\"Throughout the conversation, Dr. Lang credited her team and colleagues for their contributions and stressed the significance of combining different fields of study to advance understanding and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. \"That's motivating to me as a researcher,\" said Lang. \"The people that we're working with, they see the value in what we're doing, they support us.\"

This session will explore six trends that are shaping the jobs of the future: 1) The importance of meaningful work, who gets it, and how values and purpose can attract, motivate, and retain talent. 2) Digital media and bottoms-up self-organizing: Are leaders prepared for the fluid, flexible, revolutionary corporate workplace of the future? 3) Work and family and work/life balance: These are traditional problems with new possibilities. For example, learn how women can reshape the image of careers. 4) The skills gap and unfilled jobs: Given school dropouts, job dropouts, and youth unemployment, are young people being prepared for jobs of the future? 5) Where do we work, and how do we get there? Transportation disparities point to the social divide as a geographic divide. 6) Entrepreneurship: Why everyone longs to be an entrepreneur, how small business interacts with big business, and keeping the entrepreneurial spirit as companies grow.

South Africa has made huge gains in ensuring universal enrolment for children at school, and in restructuring and recapitalising the FET college sector. However, some three million young people are not in education, employment or training and the country faces serious challenges in providing its youth with the pathways and support they need to transition successfully into a differentiated system of post-school education and training. Across nine evidence-based chapters, 17 authors offer a succinct overview of the different facets of post-school provision in South Africa. These include an analysis of the impact of the national qualifications system on occupational training, the impact of youth unemployment, the capacity of the post-school system to absorb larger numbers of young people, the relationship between universities and FET colleges, the need for more strategic public and private investment in skills development, and a youth perspective on education and training policy. The authors have a number of recommendations for improving the alignment between schooling, further education and training, and university education – interventions that could shape the future of South Africa’s youth.

Revealing their identities for the first time, they show how they are providing services to the people living under their rule, and how they join other groups in providing these services. Spending nearly two months with al Nusra, and exploring their expanding territory, Dairieh meets its first military leader, who explains how al Nusra captured and controls its territories, as well as its military doctrine. These perspectives are crucial to the process of questioning contemporary global values and practices, and contribute to current debates in a variety of fields (politics, education, culture, the economy, etc.) on the causes, consequences and future of globalization. The book develops new theories and practices of transculturality that link different theoretical and cultural spheres (“minor” and “dominant”) in order to formulate new discussions and propositions about appropriate responses to give in defiance of the adverse effects of globalization.

East Africa has made notable progress in HIV/AIDS control, with declining infection rates and expanded access to antiretroviral therapy (ART). However, persistent challenges such as donor funding volatility, drug resistance, healthcare access disparities, and social stigma continue to hinder the region’s ability to achieve long-term success in combating the epidemic. International organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the Global Fund, and the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), play a crucial role in shaping regional HIV/AIDS policies. Their contributions extend beyond financial support to include setting global treatment standards, advocating for evidence-based interventions, and fostering innovative strategies such as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), digital health solutions, and differentiated care models. This review examines the evolving role of international organizations in influencing HIV/AIDS policy in East Africa, assesses their impact on prevention and treatment programs, and explores challenges in ensuring sustainability. It also evaluates emerging strategies, including the integration of HIV services into Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the shift toward domestic financing models. Understanding these policy directions is essential for ensuring equitable access to HIV care, strengthening health systems, and achieving the long-term goal of HIV/AIDS eradication in the region.

Abstract: Background: Lung cancer is associated with a high incidence of mortality worldwide. Molecular mechanisms governing the disease have been explored by genomic studies; however, several aspects remain elusive. The integration of genomic profiling with in-depth proteomic pro-filing has introduced a new dimension to lung cancer research, termed proteogenomics. The aim of this review article was to investigate proteogenomic approaches in lung cancer, focusing on how elucidation of proteogenomic features can evoke tangible clinical outcomes. Methods: A strict methodological approach was adopted for study selection and key article features included molec-ular attributes, tumor biomarkers, and major hallmarks involved in oncogenesis. Results: As a consensus, in all studies it becomes evident that proteogenomics is anticipated to fill significant knowledge gaps and assist in the discovery of novel treatment options. Genomic profiling unravels patient driver mutations, and exploration of downstream effects uncovers great variability in transcript and protein correlation. Also, emphasis is placed on defining proteogenomic traits of tumors of major histological classes, generating a diverse portrait of predictive markers and druggable targets. Conclusions: An up-to-date synthesis of landmark lung cancer proteogenomic studies is herein provided, underpinning the importance of proteogenomics in the landscape of personalized medicine for combating lung cancer.
