This report presents the results of an investigation into the resistance and flow characteristics of a series of unconventional bow forms for a body of revolution submarine. A series of five different bow forms was developed and tested. Three of these bow forms were non-axisymmetric and two were axisymmetric. One non-axisymmetric model served as the baseline and the other two varied in length. The axisymmetric submarine models were designed and tested to provide a control or benchmark shape typical of current practice. The submerged resistance of these two axisymmetric submarines served as a standard against which the resistance of the non-axisymmetric forms were compared. Fluid flow patterns over the non-axisymmetric bow forms were studied qualitatively by observing tufts attached to the models.

The nonaxisymmetric shapes of a rotating drop in an immiscible system were studied. Five basic families of shapes (axisymmetric, two-lobed, three-lobed, four-lobed, and toroidal) were observed. The sequence (axisymmetric to two-lobed to three-lobed to four-lobed to toroidal) seems to be linked to increasing spin-up velocity. For the axisymmetric case, direct comparisons of experiments with the theory of a free rotating drop were surprisingly good the equatorial area differs from theory by only 30%. Furthermore, the non-axisymmetric shapes are in good qualitative agreement with the theory, although the theory does not address the presence of an outer fluid.

The long-term scientific goal of my research is to better understand the distribution of phytoplankton in the world's oceans through remote sensing their influence on the optical properties of the water. An associated goal is the understanding of the absorption and backscattering properties of marine particles in terms of the distributions of their size, shape, and composition.

We have continued our efforts to correlate cholic acid host shapes and relative energies by completing the conformational analyses of the m- xylylene diamine cholic acid host. The strategy previously developed, which utilizes a combination of systematic conformational searching by energy and by distance, was employed for studying the p xylylene diamine cholic acid host (PCAH) and two derivatives degraded in the side chain, one which contains the m xylylene diamine spacer. The report compiles all of the information generated on the shapes and cavities of these four cholic acid host molecules. The cavity sizes and shapes are compared to the cavity found in arabinose binding protein and speculations on the ability of monosaccharides to bind in these cavities are made.

As AI applications such as ChatGPT or MetaAI continue to advance and integrate into various online spaces, their touchpoints with daily life are growing with some AI’s offering advice, purchase recommendations and more. Yet, in proportion to AI’s growing presence, there is relatively little research focusing on the implications of us interacting with AI. Understanding the nuances of how we interact with AI as a social actor, particularly with AI as an empathetic entity, remains unexplored. However, this is especially relevant when considering the potential of AI not just as a tool, but as an entity capable of influencing trust and decision-making, that is becoming increasingly more challenging to distinguish from human interaction partners. Displays of empathy have been found to significantly influence trust in interpersonal relationships, whilst trust has been found to positively influence individuals’ patronage intentions. This research aims to explore, whether this effect translates into the realm of human-computer communication, by examining the impact of an empathetic AI on patronage intentions toward it, mediated by trust towards the AI’s benevolence and competence. This will be investigated via two custom AI chatbot interactions, which will be created by means of GPT-4 and trained to communicate in either a highly empathetic or non-empathetic manner. Previous studies on conversational agents primarily focused on simulating AI chatbot interactions using basic, pre-scripted dialogues. This research innovates by leveraging advanced machine learning to actively generate empathetic and rational responses, moving beyond mere simulations to actual AI-driven conversations.

Observations reveal concentrations of molecular line emission on the sky, called ``clumps,'' in dense, star-forming molecular clouds. These clumps are believed to be the eventual sites of star formation. We study the three-dimensional analogs of clumps using a set of self-consistent, time-dependent numerical models of molecular clouds. The models follow the decay of initially supersonic turbulence in an isothermal, self-gravitating, magnetized fluid. We find the following. (1) Clumps are intrinsically triaxial. This explains the observed deficit of clumps with a projected axis ratio near unity, and the apparent prolateness of clumps. (2) Simulated clump axes are not strongly aligned with the mean magnetic field within clumps, nor with the large-scale mean fields. This is in agreement with observations. (3) The clump mass spectrum has a high-mass slope that is consistent with the Salpeter value. There is a low-mass break in the slope at $\sim 0.5 \msun$, although this may depend on model parameters including numerical resolution. (4) The typical specific spin angular momentum of clumps is $4 \times 10^{22} {\rm cm^2 s^{-1}}$. This is larger than the median specific angular momentum of binary stars. Scaling arguments suggest that higher resolution simulations may soon be able to resolve the scales at which the angular momentum of binary stars is determined.

The current pandemic situation has an impact on all areas of society. In this project, we aim at focusing on the development of children’s early communicative competencies and how it is influenced by the increased time they see people around them wearing protective facial masks. The question whether and how facial masks are influencing children and their communicative development has been taken up repeatedly by various media reports. Parents and caregivers likewise express their concerns about the potential long-term effects of the current situation. However, solid empirical evidence is lacking. In this project, we aim to shed light on the effects of the currently omnipresent facial masks on children’s ability to read social-communicative signals from an interaction partner’s gaze direction. From early on, children differentiate between social and non-social interaction partners. The human face in general and the gaze of the eyes particularly, are important sources of information in the context of social interactions. From facial features, information can be extracted about the direction of attention and about someone’s emotional state. This information allows conclusions about an interaction partner’s intentions, desires, and beliefs (Baron-Cohen, 1995) . From birth, if not even before (e.g., Reid et al., 2017), infants prefer faces over non-facial objects (e.g., Farroni et al., 2002). Further, new-borns prefer faces that look directly at them to faces that look away (Farroni et al., 2004) and they prefer faces with open eyes compared to closed eyes (Batki et al., 2000). These preferences suggest that from birth, children respond to the initiation of a social interaction. In the present project, we focus on infants’ gaze following, that is their ability to synchronize visual attention with others based on observed gaze direction (Langton et al., 2000). Gaze following has a phylogenetic base and is present in other species such as non-human primates (Tomasello et al., 2007). It emerges during the second half of the first year of life (D’Entremont et al., 1997; Gredebäck et al., 2010; Gredebäck & Daum, 2015) and is one of the first obvious signs for what is known as joint attention that includes both following and guiding the attention of others (Tomasello, 1999). In recent years, infants’ gaze following has been shown to be important for the development of their communicative competencies (i.e., following pointing gestures or keeping eye contact; Carpenter et al., 1998; Morales et al., 2005), language (Brooks & Meltzoff, 2005; Morales et al., 2000), and emotion regulation (Morales et al., 2000, 2005). Furthermore, infants’ gaze following is not based on maturation processes alone, but is strongly influenced by their experience (Astor et al., 2020; Silverstein et al., 2019): Children of deaf parents, who cannot rely on auditory signals show enhanced gaze following (Brooks et al., 2019) and additional ostensive signals (e.g., such as infant-directed speech or eye contact) result in infants’ increased sensitivity to others’ gaze direction (Senju & Csibra, 2008). Importantly, infants do not use others’ gaze direction in isolation. In contrast, they integrate information from different, multisensory sources as one percept (e.g., visual expression of the face or tone of voice; Bahrick & Lickliter, 2012; Flom & Bahrick, 2007). The intersensory redundancy hypothesis states that “information presented concurrently and synchronously in two sense modalities recruits attention and facilitates perceptual learning of […] information […] than when the same information is presented in only one sense modality” (Flom & Bahrick, 2007, p. 239). Given this evidence, it becomes clear that during the development of communicative skills, infants strongly rely on the communicative signals from others. These signals are provided, for example, by gaze direction, the expression of emotions, and the tone of the voice. In the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, infants increasingly encounter situations in which parents, caregivers, and other people in their environments are required to wear facial masks. Accordingly, the question arises whether this “natural intervention” has an observable influence on infants’ communicative development. With the present project, we will examine this potential influence by looking at the difference in children’s gaze following behaviour before and after the COVID-19-related duty to wear facial masks. We aim to answer the following research question: Do infants and children who are for a substantial amount of time surrounded by people wearing facial masks show different gaze following than infants before the COVID-19-related facial mask obligation? To address the research question, we will use the combination of a cross-sectional and longitudinal research design. We will conduct two studies to explore infants’ and children’s gaze following behaviour and development. In Study 1, we will compare data of 12- to 15-month-olds’ gaze following collected in 2017 (no-COVID-19-experience sample) when infants had no experience with facial masks to new data that will be collected with infants of the same age who had a substantial experience with facial masks (with-COVID-19-experience sample). In Study 2, we longitudinally explore the development of the no-COVID-19-experience sample of Study 1 and analyse the same children’s social-cognitive skills at the age of 4-5 years at a point in time when they also have had substantial experience with facial masks. Cross-sectionally, these pre-schoolers’ data will be compared to data of another sample of pre-schoolers using the same task that was collected before the COVID-19-related duty to wear facial masks. Study 1: In Task 1a, the children see a woman looking at one of two toys (referent object) in front of her (Figure 1, task adapted from Senju & Csibra, 2008, following the procedure of the Manybabies Gaze Following study, see preprint https://psyarxiv.com/sgfhv/).We will use eye tracking to measure whether and how fast infants follow the woman’s gaze and how long they look at each toy. We will collect new data with the infants of the with-COVID-19-experience sample and compare this data to the data collected in 2017 from the no-COVID-19-experience sample (see Figure 2). We will analyse to which toy/object infants look first (First look) and how often (Frequency of looks), how long (Duration of looks) and how fast they look to the objects (Latency). In Task 1b, infants see a woman introducing two objects in front of her and then looking at one of them (Figure 1). In some trials, the woman turns her head to refer to an object (head-turn stimuli), in other trials she only moves her eyes (gaze-shift stimuli). We will analyse the same dependent variables as in Task 1a and analyse whether infants differ in their gaze following between head-turn and gaze-shift stimuli. Furthermore, we will also analyse the proportion of infants’ gazes towards the eyes and the mouth of the woman while she is introducing the objects. The data of this task will be compared to original data from Tenenbaum and colleagues (2015) on N = 61 infants at 12 months assessed before the COVID-19-related duty to wear facial masks in the US (Figure 2). Study 2: For Task 2a, we will run the same task (Task 1a) as used in Study 1 with the sample of 4- to 5-year-old children who were tested as 12-month-olds in 2017 with the same task. Repeating the task allows to compare children’s gaze following longitudinally (Figure 2). In Task 2b (adapted from Yow & Markman, 2011), the children see an experimenter either sitting between two boxes or behind one of two boxes and pointing or gazing to one of the boxes (Figure 1). A toy is hidden in the box the experimenter is gazing at or pointing to and children have to indicate in which box they think the toy is hidden. We will measure in how many trials the children indicate the correct box verbally or by pointing/grasping. We will compare our data to original data of Yow and Markman (2011) on N = 24 children at 4 to 5 years assessed before the COVID-19-related duty to wear facial masks in the US (Figure 2).

The true shape of the rotational absorption lines of the hydrogen fluoride fundamental band was investigated. The line shapes were to be measured at pressures where pressure broadening made the only significant contribution to the true line shape. The experimental aspects of this investigation are discussed. All data were taken with the vacuum-grating spectrograph recently completed at the University of Tennessee. The results of the line center and line shape measurements are presented. Twentyone fundamental and seventeen first overtone line centers were measured at low pressure with an estimated accuracy of ! 1/0.02 cm. The fundamental and first overtone band centers were calculated to be 1/3961.43 cm and 1/7750.83 cm, respectively. The results of this investigation and suggestions for future experiments in this field are presented.

A key challenge for countries with large refugee populations is to establish policies that help refugees while ensuring that host country nationals do not develop negative attitudes towards them. In principle, international aid programs can help to address this dilemma by generating additional resource flows into the country. Can international aid induce more altruistic attitudes and behaviors towards refugees in the local population and, if so, which types of aid programs are more or less likely to do so? Based on a two-month randomized control trial in Turkey with multiple survey waves conducted using an online platform, we explore whether distinct types of aid, notably cash transfers, vocational training, and social cohesion programs, have different effects on local population attitudes and altruistic behavior vis-a-vis refugees, our main outcomes of interest. We further assess whether these effects vary depending on whether the funder is the host government or international donor and if international aid is framed in terms of helping the local economy versus the refugee population. Understanding the conditions under which international aid policies successfully integrate refugees in host countries may improve the effectiveness of programs aimed at supporting refugees and nationals in receiving countries alike.

The present study identifies a process for performing computational fluid dynamic calculations of the flow over full three-dimensional (3D) representations of complex ice shapes deposited on aircraft surfaces. Rime and glaze icing geometries formed on a NACA23012 airfoil were obtained during testing in the NASA Glenn Research Center's Icing Research Tunnel (IRT). The ice shape geometries were scanned as a cloud of data points using a 3D laser scanner. The data point clouds were meshed using Geomagic software to create highly accurate models of the ice surface. The surface data was imported into Pointwise grid generation software to create the CFD surface and volume grids. It was determined that generating grids in Pointwise for complex 3D icing geometries was possible using various techniques that depended on the ice shape. Computations of the flow fields over these ice shapes were performed using the NASA National Combustion Code (NCC). Results for a rime ice shape for angle of attack conditions ranging from 0 to 10 degrees and for freestream Mach numbers of 0.10 and 0.18 are presented. For validation of the computational results, comparisons were made to test results from rapid-prototype models of the selected ice accretion shapes, obtained from a separate study in a subsonic wind tunnel at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The computational and experimental results were compared for values of pressure coefficient and lift. Initial results show fairly good agreement for rime ice accretion simulations across the range of conditions examined. The glaze ice results are promising but require some further examination.

I needed a straight edge in my small moleskine and wanted something that adds a little stiffness to the notebook. I added a few useful shapes, and the double small triangles were added as arrow heads in two directions. I use a dotted notebook that has 4 dots per inch, so the small shapes are supposed to be 6mm. The medium shapes are 12.5mm and the large shapes are 24.5mm. The radius on the "inside" and "outside" corners is slightly different.

We consider a homotopic evolution in the space of smooth shapes starting from the unit circle. Based on the Loewner-Kufarev equation we give a Hamiltonian formulation of this evolution and provide conservation laws. The symmetries of the evolution are given by the Virasoro algebra. The `positive' Virasoro generators span the holomorphic part of the complexified vector bundle over the space of conformal embeddings of the unit disk into the complex plane and smooth on the boundary. In the covariant formulation they are conserved along the Hamiltonian flow. The `negative' Virasoro generators can be recovered by an iterative method making use of the canonical Poisson structure. We study an embedding of the Loewner-Kufarev trajectories into the Segal-Wilson Grassmannian, construct the tau-function, the Baker-Akhiezer function, and finally, give a class of solutions to the KP equation.

This article is from Cell Host & Microbe , volume 14 . Abstract Microbial exposure following birth profoundly impacts mammalian immune system development. Microbiota alterations are associated with increased incidence of allergic and autoimmune disorders with elevated serum IgE as a hallmark. The previously reported abnormally high serum IgE levels in germ-free mice suggests that immunoregulatory signals from microbiota are required to control basal IgE levels. We report that germ-free mice and those with low-diversity microbiota develop elevated serum IgE levels in early life. B cells in neonatal germ-free mice undergo isotype switching to IgE at mucosal sites in a CD4 T-cell- and IL-4-dependent manner. A critical level of microbial diversity following birth is required in order to inhibit IgE induction. Elevated IgE levels in germ-free mice lead to increased mast-cell-surface-bound IgE and exaggerated oral-induced systemic anaphylaxis. Thus, appropriate intestinal microbial stimuli during early life are critical for inducing an immunoregulatory network that protects from induction of IgE at mucosal sites.

A large population of discrete volcanic edifices on Venus has been identified and cataloged by means of Magellan SAR images, and an extensive database describing thousands of such features is in final preparation. Those volcanoes categorized as Intermediate to Large in scale, while relatively small in number (approx. 400), nonetheless constitute a significant volumetric component (approx. 13 x 10(exp 6) cu km) of the total apparent crustal volume of Venus. For this reason, we have focused attention on the morphometry of a representative suite of the larger edifices on Venus and, in particular, on ways of constraining the eruptive histories of these possibly geologically youthful landforms. Our approach has been to determine a series of reproducible morphometric parameters for as many of the discrete volcanoes on Venus that have an obvious expression within the global altimetry data acquired by Magellan. In addition, we have attempted to objectively and systematically define the mathematical essence of the shapes of these larger volcanoes using a polynomial cross-section approximation involving only parameters easily measured from digital topography, as well as with simple surface cylindrical harmonic expansions. The goal is to reduce the topological complexities of the larger edifices to a few simple parameters which can then be related to similar expressions for well-studied terrestrial and martian features.

Equilibrium crystal shapes (ECS) near facet ridge end points (FRE) are generically complex. We study the body-centered solid-on-solid model on a square lattice with an enhanced uniaxial interaction range to test the stability of the so-called stochastic FRE point where the model maps exactly onto one dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang type growth and the local ECS is simple. The latter is unstable. The generic ECS contains first-order ridges extending into the rounded part of the ECS, where two rough orientations coexist and first-order faceted to rough boundaries terminating in Pokrovsky-Talapov type end points.
