Hate is often confused with love because it produces the same bonding/attachment to its subjects. The transition from love to hatred is seamless and imperceptible. The two emotions often cohabit (ambivalence which is a form of dissonance). Such conflation is especially pronounced in mental health disorders that involve object inconstancy, persecutory objects, dysregulation, and abandonment anxiety. In these, the wish to subsume the intimate partner, merge or fuse with him is felt as a wish to destroy an object that is, at times, frustrating. Consequently, hate is sometimes mistaken for love and vice versa. This is especially true when certain defense mechanisms - such as projection, reaction formation, splitting, projective identification - are at work and reframe reality. Not strictly a defense mechanism, it still exhibits many of the hallmarks of one. Cognitive Dissonance: simultaneously harboring two or more conflicting pieces of information or contradictory thoughts. Cognitive dissonance is when someone holds simultaneously two conflicting views, values, or bits of information which call for diametrically opposed decisions or actions. This state of things generates an inner conflict and triggers several primitive (infantile) defense mechanisms such as denial, splitting, projection, and reaction formation. One way to cope with this predicament - to transition from dissonance to consonance - is to come up with a reconciling narrative, a theory which seamlessly accommodates both conflicting points of view or data. Such soothing fiction falls into several categories: (A=Love, Not-A=Hate) 1. Temporal: A is true at one time and not-A is true at another period. Or: A is a transient state of affairs. 2. Reactive: A is the normal. Not-A happened because of some trigger, provocation, or change in circumstances or conditions. Not-A is abnormal, and, therefore, an aberration or a mere curiosity. 3. Inclusive: both A and Not-A are pieces of a bigger puzzle, picture, or theory. Their contradistinction is only apparent because we have no access to or awareness of the true and full picture, our knowledge or capacity to know are limited. 4. Denial: both A and Not-A are true and lead to the same conclusions. There is no contradiction. For example: he loves me. He beats me up. But his battering just proves that he loves me, it is his way of showing that he loves me. 5. Defensive: both A and not-A are valid. But only A applies to me while not-A may apply to others (splitting). Not-A is bad (projection) and should be eradicated in others in order to restore A to its rightful place as the sole viable and ethical alternative (reaction formation). Volitional Dissonance is when we act in ways which we perceive to be akratic, immoral, or antisocial, rather than phronetic. When we perceive our actions to have been the outcomes of akrasia (weak willed misbehavior contrary to our best judgment) and not of phronesis (good judgment, excellence of character, habits conducive to eudaimonia - a good life - and practical virtue). Dissonance is intolerable. We resolve it by using a variety of, mostly alloplastic psychological defense mechanisms - like displacement or rationalization - and narrative solutions, such as reframing We also tend to externalize the locus of control (and thus our agency, self-control, autonomy, or free will in the matter): It wasn't my fault, something or someone made me do it or inexorably and irresistibly led to what happened! Other dissonances include: Emotional Dissonance (aka ambivalence): experiencing two opposing emotions (such as love and hate) which are elicited by the same object; Axiological Dissonance occurs when two dearly upheld and deeply felt values are incompatible; Deontic Dissonance is a subspecies of this dissonance: when one has two irreconcilable duties or obligations; Attitudinal Dissonance is an inner conflict between two internalized beliefs, attitudes, statements or propositions held to be true. I am conducting an experiment on self-deception and altruism. Self-deception is a case of biased information processing and the study of it has increased in the past few years in many fields, including behavioural economics. In short, the theory posits that individuals update a self-image about themselves based on their actions; in an effort to retain a positive of a self-image as possible, they might process information in a biased manner even if it hurts them. In this case, this self-image refers to altruism. When their potential actions are hurtful to their self-image of altruism, individuals might subconsciously manipulate information signals in order to avoid a negative update. This behaviour affects a range of economic topics, from inequality to health economics. The participants of this experiment will be put in a situation with three possible outcomes. First, they can act altruistically, and positively update their self-image. Second, they can act selfishly, make more money and negatively update their self-image. Third, act selfishly, but manipulate an information signal (self-deception) in order to not negatively update their self-image. The most important potential benefit of this research is its ability to use altruism as a proxy of self-image, allowing for the study of the relationship between self-deception and a self-image. According to this paper’s constructed model, this relationship is not monotonic. This lack of monotonicity has not previously been shown in the lab. Participants in this experiment will be paid a participation fee and can increase their earnings based on their decisions. As will be explained later, they receive an information signal* regarding which game they are playing in each trial. *This signal is quickly flashed on their screens, therefore, individuals with a history of epilepsy will be excluded. Abstract: "There are many economic areas where self-deception might play a role. Individuals who self-deceive tend to make worse financial decisions, even when financial literacy is held constant. Self-deception also impedes growth in organisations and in some cases might make collateral requirements inefficiently high. The existing literature on self-deception often cites self-image concerns as the original motivation to self-deceive. However, measuring an individual’s self-image is a complicated task which has not been extensively undertaken. The present experimental research attempts to study this self-image by building on the existing literature on altruism and self-deception. A model is developed and five different groups of potential self-deceivers are identified. According to the model, when conflicting motivations exist, self-deception exhibits a non-monotonic relationship with self-image."

The concept of self-deception is addressed in philosophy, psychology, evolutionary biology, and behavioural economy (Bachkirova, 2016; Khalil, 2017; Mele, 1997; von Hippel & Trivers, 2011). Researchers’ interest in self-deception was sparked by anecdotal evidence of cases (i.e., a spouse who has proof of being cheated but still declares to friends that everything is excellent with the marriage; Mele, 1997). To date, there is little consensus on its definition and mechanisms (Bachkirova, 2016; Paulhus & Buckels, 2012) and the literature is scattered. There is no conceptual maturity on the topic and no single accepted conceptual framework. Three main approaches have been outlined from three distinct research traditions: philosophy / cognitive psychology / evolutionary psychology. Philosophical definitions of self-deception focus mainly on the requirement of showing that one knows and does not know something simultaneously (Sackheim & Gur, 1979; Mele, 1997). Cognitive and evolutionary psychology proposes a wide range of cognitive and/or affective strategies people employ to covertly attend to internal or external motivations (Lauria et al., 2016; Tice & Masicampo, 2008; Trivers, 2006; von Hippel & Trivers &, 2011). We will refer to self-deception as a motivated process that selectively disallows inconsistent but accurate beliefs about the self (Balcetis, 2008; Ditto et al., 2003; e.g., negative/ ego threatening Sackeim & Gur, 1979; unwelcoming; von Hippel &Thrivers, 2011) and replaces them with consistent ones (Sedikides & Alicke, 2012; Taylor, 1989). When we talk about self-deception, we talk about a process (i.e., how self-deception occurs within the individual; Khalil, 2017; von Hippel & Trivers, 2011) or a product (e.g., stated false self-beliefs; Khalil, 2017). The motivations and the mechanisms behind self-deception vary in different studies or theoretical papers. External motivations for self-deception studied or proposed in the literature are deceiving others (von Hippel & Trivers, 2010), financial incentives (Mijovic-Prelec & Prelec, 2010), avoiding punishment (von Hippel & Trivers, 2010), social validation and/or social recognition (Chance et al., 2011). Internal motivations for self-deception proposed are increased confidence in oneself (Mijovic-Prelec & Prelec, 2010), a decrease of cognitive discrepancy (Sackheim & Gur, 1979), cognitive dissonance (Merckelbach & Merten, 2012), increased subjective well-being (Baumeister, 1993), maintenance of self-concept (Mazar et al., 2008) and reduced cognitive load (von Hippel & Trivers, 2010). To date, only some of these motivations have been tested (Chance et al., 2011; Jian et al., 2019; Mijovic-Prelec & Prelec, 2010; Sackheim & Gur, 1979). Additionally, research in self-deception is divided between an intrapersonal view (i.e., the self-deceivers is deceiving the self for its benefit, which is avoiding distressing information; Sackheim & Gur, 1997; Mele, 2000) and an interpersonal view (i.e., the self-deceiver is deceiving the self to deceive others better, self-deception is a by-product of deception; von Hippel & Trivers, 2011). New approaches propose that both perspectives are valid and do not exclude each other (Mijovic-Prelec & Prelec, 2010; Lauria et al., 2016). Moreover, the traditional intrapersonal view suggested that the self is split between a deceiver and a deceived inside the mind (i.e., conscious vs unconscious; Sacheim & Gur, 1978). More modern perspectives focus on how self-deception is possible without the self being split (Mijovic-Prelec & Prelec, 2010; von Hippel & Trivers, 2011). For self-deception to be achieved, subjects must lie to themselves successfully (Sloman et al., 2010). Self-deception is viewed as a response style/trait or behaviour (Chance et al., 2011; Paulhus, 2002). In different studies, self-deception was operationalized as repression (Baumeister & Cairns, 1992), denial (Moral Jimenez & Sirvent Ruis, 2014), defensiveness (Derakshan, 1999) or self-enhancement (Paulhus, 1984, 2002). Some studies overlap two phenomena (i.e., self-deception and defensiveness; Derakshan, 1999), while others differentiate it from other concepts (i.e., repression; Gur & Sackheim, 1979). Various questionnaires have been developed regarding trait/response style self-deception (the most notable are: the Self-Deception Questionnaire; SDQ; Sackheim & Gur, 1979a; Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding; BIDR; Paulhus, 1991). BIDR or, more recently, Paulhus Deception Scales (PDS; Paulhus, 1999) has been one of the most widely used questionnaires and was tested and validated on multiple populations (e.g., forensic populations; Lanyon & Carle, 2007). As yet, there is no generally accepted measure of behavioural self-deception. Gur and Sackheim (1979) conducted one of the first empirical demonstrations of the existence of self-deception. After completing a task, they looked at the coexistence of two incompatible beliefs by having participants identify the speaker (own voice vs another person's voice). Verbal non-recognition of own’s voice was accompanied by physiological indications (galvanic skin response) suggestive of detection. Thus, the oral evaluation ‘this is not my own voice’ conflicted with the physiologically based assessment ‘this is indeed my voice’. Gur and Sackheim (1979) presented for the first time criteria for defining self-deception: 1) the individual holds two contradictory beliefs (p and not that p); 2) these two contradictory beliefs are held simultaneously; 3) the individual is not aware of one of the beliefs, and 4) keeping one belief from awareness is a motivated act. Based on these criteria, we will consider a valid paradigm for self-deception, one that: i) demonstrates an existing knowledge of the truth or possible knowledge of the truth (e.g., a score on a test), ii) includes some control and/or manipulation check showing that individuals are not conscious of deceiving themselves (i.e., it is not a case of other deception) and iii) the deception behaviour is motivated, either implicitly or explicitly (i.e., financial gain, subjective well-being, social recognition, etc.). Given the inconsistencies in the literature on self-deception, this systematic review aims to provide an overview of the most notable empirical results in the last decades. The findings will inform the state of the knowledge on this topic and bring more clarity to the phenomena. Furthermore, this is the first step at covering a substantial gap in the literature: a summary of the empirical findings. Existing psychological reviews on self-deception are mostly centred on promoting specific theories or models (Bachkirova, 2016; Chance & Norton, 2015; Trivers, 2006; von Hippel & Trivers, 2011), and they do not present a comprehensive perspective of the empirical results.

These devastating outcomes occur especially when play-like activities seem to offer in fantasy a safety absent from real life. The author uses the clinical case of a victim of sexual abuse to illustrate such unhealthy activity and the compulsion and dissociation it creates, which can foster the epigenetic transmission of incest from one generation to the next.

In reality, we found that many hardware implementations have critical security weaknesses, for many models allowing for complete recovery of the data without knowledge of any secret. BitLocker, the encryption software built into Microsoft Windows will rely exclusively on hardware full-disk encryption if the drive advertises supported for it. Thus, for these drives, data protected by BitLocker is also compromised. This challenges the view that full-disk encryption implemented in hardware is preferable over software. We conclude that one should not rely solely on hardware encryption offered by SEDs. In recent years, protection of sensitive data has received increased attention. Protection of digital data has become a necessity, certainly in the light of new European Data Protection Regulation. Technically, encryption is the go to protection mechanism; it may be implemented in software or hardware (or both). It can be applied on the level of individual files, or the entire drive, which is called full-disk encryption. Full-disk encryption is often the solution of choice as it takes away concerns of sensitive data leakage through, for example, temporary files, page files and caches. Several software solutions for full-disk encryption exist, and modern operating systems typically integrate it as a feature. However, purely software-based encryption has inherent weaknesses, such as the encryption key being present in RAM at all times and performance drawbacks. In an attempt to address these weaknesses, hardware full-disk encryption is often proposed; the encryption is performed within the drive itself, thereby confining the encryption key exclusively to the drive. Typically, the encryption itself is performed by a dedicated AES co-processor, whereas the software on the drive (firmware) takes care of the key management. It is often regarded as the successor of software full-disk encryption. Full-disk encryption software, including those integrated in modern operating systems, may autonomously decide to rely solely on hardware encryption in case it is supported by the storage device (via the TCG Opal standard). In case the decision is made to rely on hardware encryption, software encryption is disabled.
