3DTIC ADA627783: Sedimentary Processes And Stratigraphic Responses In A Tectonically Driven Basin: Northern California Continental Shelf And Upper Slope
By Defense Technical Information Center
This project is a component of ONR's STRATAFORM program, the goal of which has been to link short-term (i.e., acting over hours to weeks) biological and physical processes affecting sedimentation (event stratigraphy) to the sequence stratigraphy and facies architecture of the preserved record. STRATAFORM consisted of three interrelated projects whose goals are to study: 1) shelf sediment dynamics and the development of lithostratigraphy, 2) slope geological processes and resultant geomorphology, and 3) stratigraphic sequences resulting from shelf and slope sedimentation. High-resolution multichannel seismic (MCS) data collection, described below, was part of the third project, but the data also form part of a multi-faceted approach that ties all three projects together.

6NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19890008972: Martian Oxidation Processes And Selection Of Ancient Sedimentary Samples For Bio-organic Analysis
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The results obtained by the Viking Missions concerning organic and biological analysis are summarized and it is indicated that these results do not preclude the existence in buried or protected regions of the planet, organic molecules or fossil life. The use of automated instruments is suggested for the analyses of samples obtained from certain regions of the planet, as a preliminary step before they are selected, retrieved, and returned to Earth for more complete analysis.

10NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20140009925: Sedimentary Mounds On Mars: Tracing Present-day Formation Processes Into The Past
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
High resolution photography and spectroscopy of the martian surface (MOC, HiRISE) from orbit has revolutionized our view of Mars with one and revealed spectacular views of finely layered sedimentary materials throughout the globe [1]. Some of these sedimentary deposits are 'mound' shaped and lie inside of craters (Fig 1). Crater mound deposits are found throughout the equatorial region, as well as ice-rich deposits found in craters in the north and south polar region [2-4]. Despite their wide geographical extent and varying volatile content, the 'mound' deposits have a large number of geomorphic and structural similarities that suggest they formed via equivalent processes. Thus, modern depositional processes of ice and dust can serve as an invaluable analog for interpreting the genesis of ancient sedimentary mound deposits.

11DTIC ADA598110: Surfzone Bubbles: Model Development, Testing And Extension To Sedimentary/Chemical/Biological Processes
By Defense Technical Information Center
Our long term goal is to develop a tested model of optical properties in the surf zone and adjacent nearshore ocean, including the influence of suspended sediment, bubble population and surface foam, to assess how optical properties are related to short term events such as individual breaking wave crests, and to determine how wave-driven surf zone circulation influences spatial distribution of optical properties just offshore of breaking through seaward transport of fine sediment and small persistent bubbles.

17DTIC ADA630563: Investigation Of Sedimentary Processes On Millennial Timescales In An Accretionary Continental Margin Setting
By Defense Technical Information Center
The focus of my work in the first two phases of STRATAFORM has been oriented toward identifying the sedimentary processes that act together to produce the characteristic deposits of the uppermost seabed ( 50 cm depth) over short timescales (100-y and less). Over centuries to millennia, sediment discharge, climate, and sea-level all change significantly, affecting the preserved record of sedimentary processes in the margin and the dominant processes responsible for acoustic stratigraphy observed in seismic profiles. The long-term goal of this project is to determine the millennial-scale sedimentary processes that are responsible for the development of acoustic stratigraphy and the characteristic signatures of these processes. A good understanding of the significance of reflectors imaged in the seabed is of critical importance to achieving the goals of the STRATAFORM program.

24DTIC ADA626045: Using High-Resolution Stratigraphy For Understanding Continental Slope Sedimentary Processes: Integrating Results From The STRATAFORM Project
By Defense Technical Information Center
Over centuries to millennia, sediment discharge, climate, and sea-level all change significantly, affecting the preserved record of sedimentary processes in the margin and the dominant processes responsible for acoustic stratigraphy observed in seismic profiles. The long-term goal of this project is to determine the sedimentary processes that develop acoustic stratigraphy and the characteristic signatures of these processes. In support of this overarching goal, the focus of the present project is on detailed study of core properties with the goal of discerning the signatures of processes both that act to emplace and to destroy strata. Detailed observations are necessary because muddy sediments, such as those that compose the study area, dominantly exhibit fine-scale variability in sedimentary structure and sediment texture.

The ultimate goal is to understand the creation of the preserved stratigraphic record, the bedform formation, and its modification on the eastern North Korea continental shelf, slope and adjacent areas as the product of geologic, biologic, and oceanographic processes with both spatial and temporal heterogeneities. The emphasis is on the most upper sediments and the Late Pleistocene - Holocene period of Earth history.

26DTIC ADA625964: Sedimentary Processes And Stratigraphic Responses In A Tectonically Driven Basin: Northern California Continental Shelf And Upper Slope
Highresolution multichannel seismic (MCS) data collection, described below, was part of the third project, but the data also form part of a multi-faceted approach that ties all three projects together.

27DTIC ADA202466: Characterization Of Sediment And Sedimentary Processes By Thermoluminescence Level In The Fjord And Shelf Environment Of Western Spitsbergen, Svalbard
By Defense Technical Information Center
This study explored the relationship between high Arctic depositional environments and the natural thermoluminescence (TL) signal of sediments. The energy and duration of light exposure during deposition controls the TL level of silicate mineral grains in the sediment. The results indicate that the TL signal of sediments is proportional to the distance from glacier sediment source and water depth in the littoral/sublittoral zone. The highest TL levels are from tills or ice-shelf sediments, which receive little or no light exposure with deposition. Intermediate TL levels are associated with ice-proximal environments; lower and consistent TL levels are recorded for glacial-marine muds collected from fiord and shelf areas. The TL of sediments decreases away from the glacier sediment source because of longer light exposure with slower rates of deposition. The lowest TL levels are for littoral and sublittoral sediments which receive extended light exposure with shoaling. The relative TL signal of sediments is a new tool for deciphering the source of sediment, particulary in environments proximal to a glacier terminus and in shallow water, less than 15 m deep. Keywords: Glacial and marine sediments; Arctic Ocean islands; Glacial deposits.
